5-0 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment
A great story but not worth $75 - 85 dollars! This is an amazing hipe for putting dollars before the storyline. The movie is a wonderful love story which happens to anybody in this world during the war years.Still overpriced in the market - beware of this.If found @ a garage sale or Used VHS shops, buy it and you will have a lovely hour or so of entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars I very highly recommend this delightful film!
Esther Williams and Van Johnson make a perfect romantic couple in this film, and realy shine in this film."A Thrill of a Romance," has a great plot, and interesting people. The songs and swim scenes with Esther are lovely as well.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars How can you go wrong?
You want to see some good drumming, don't get this tape. You want to see some great drumming, then buy this tape. The best part about this version of the Buddy Rich series is, of course, the addition of Phil Collins to the setlist.Phil is without a doubt one of the best drummers in the world and his work speaks for itself. He has proven himself time and again on numerous albums over the years in the genre of rock and pop, bu t this is indeed something different.First, let me say this, I am a huge fan of Phil's.I really like just about everything he has done (except his last album, ugh) and his drumming has always been top-notch.That said, I feel he is a little out of his league here.I give the man credit for taking on the whole big band project, I really do.I think the songs he does here are better than the stuff he put on the live CD "Hot Night in Paris", on the whole. In the end, I liked watching and listening and studying what all the drummers on this tape did.If you like Phil for his drumming, get this tape and decide for yourself.

4-0 out of 5 stars Respect for Buddy.. The Drum Prodigy
This concert is a tribute to THE drummer, Buddy Rich.He STILL exists in every drummer's (mostly over 40) heart, mind and soul.Phil Collins plays with Buddy's band on most of this video.Unfortunatelly, with all duerespect to this great musician, Phil Collins, he should have been the MCand let other well known drummers play with the band who have studied andlearned from Buddy. The other fantastic drummers mentioned that are part ofthis video seem to be mostly talking about Buddy and do very little playingon the video. They should have been doing MOST of the playing instead ofPhil. Before I go further let me say that I respect and enjoy Phil'splaying and style just as much as I do Buddy's.Phil is an excellentdrummer, singer and all around musician's musician, as we all know, but hisstyle does NOT lend itself to the Buddy Rich band. And, he sounded like hehad not been playing drums for a while (not practiced) on this video.Hisusual playing confidence was just NOT there. He came no where near cuttingthe charts with the power, sting, warmth and sensitivety of Buddy Rich. However, four stars ARE in order for this video for the respect andaffection shown for this unbelievable drummer, Buddy Rich.Phil Collinshas gained even more respect from me for doing this tribute.I saw Buddyfive times in person in my life from The Cellar in Washington, DC in thelate 60's to one of his last performances at Billy Bob's (of all places) inthe Ft Worth Texas Stockyards.I have been listening to everything I canfind by him since I was 14 and I'm now 54.I play a little myself, but ifI ever felt like I was "the drummer" when playing professionally, all I had to do was put on a side with Buddy. It'll bring you to yourtechnical knees as a drummer and wipe that "I'm the best"attitude right out of your mind.Maybe that was Phil's problem on thevideo.Buddy intimidated his playing as well, even from the grave. No onehas come close to him , technically, and I don't think anyone ever will. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Where is the DVD ?!?!?!?
I must say, this video provides some of the best vintage Buddy Rich footage I have seen in any production.I am interested to know when the DVD will be coming out with Part 1 & 2 together.I hope there will be additional footage, pictures, etc. that we Buddy Rich lovers will be able to check out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just Too Fast
What I liked most was that it included a lot of video of Buddy in the mid-60s, just as he was moving into mainstream prominence.Like a lot of teenagers at that time, I was blown away by Buddy and his sensational band, and this video takes me back to those exciting years when the band wasfrequently on TV.A highlight is a performance of the band on the"Away We Go" show, which I watched religiously back in 1967. Wish we'd had video recorders back then!In an published review of thisvideo, the writer talks about Buddy playing a drum solo using two sticks ineach hand. After watching the clip, it was probably the case that Buddywas just too fast for the film, and each stick blurred into two.But it ishard to tell!God bless those people responsible for this series--only byseeing Buddy, can one appreciate his true genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great survey of some great drummers
I could dissect this DVD, but am going to resist the temptation and cite only the drummers who I admire the most and who held my attention.
3-0 out of 5 stars A mixed bag - aficionados only
I was personallymost excited by the drumming sequence featuring Sunny Murray who seems to exude music through his whole body as if his body was part of the drum kit or the drum kit was an extension of his body.Music has got to be the thing so I'm less taken with Buddy Rich who is the "fastest drummer alive with the greatest technique etc" but I find musically uninteresting.Elvin Jones I was also taken with. The sequence with Louis Bellson was definitely the most accomplished in terms of development, musical interest and structure whilst Joe Morello being described by narrator Peter Erskine as the "poet" of the drum kit, may well be right. For drummers and jazz lovers.

5-0 out of 5 stars a history lesson
Thankyou Hudson Music for putting this out. It not only helps keep some great drummers music and contributions alive, but its great fun to watch and is very instructional-since you get to see some of the founding fathers of drumming. Every drummer should see these old clips because then you can understand where the great drummers of today come from.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Jaw Dropping performances
As a budding percussionist, I borrowed this video from my instructor, and was blown away. I just viewed the Vinnie Colaiuta solo from that video on www.drummerworld.com, and the effect is still the same. These three drummers, Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Steve Gadd, are true virtuosos of the drum set. Each did their own set, usually consisting of two songs, and a blazing solo. Then, the concert culminated when all three drummers took part in a three way battle royale. Gadd layed the groove down, and then each drummer soloed over the top of that groove. To end, the three drummers syncronized what they were playing, came center stage, and hugged. Awww. Nevertheless, this video is definitely inspirational for any drummer; I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiration STATION!!!!!
wow. 3 of the worlds top drummers on the same stage with one of the best big bands ever?! WHAT???? get this freakin video now. that's all there is to it! it'll blow your mind! i especially love when the 3 drummers (steve gadd, vinnie colaiuta and dave weckl) trade solos, very nice touch, very nice.

If you are a drummer who loves to watch great playing, get this and smile all the way.It features Steve Gadd, Dave Weckl and Vinnie Colaiuta each playing live with the Buddy Rich band.Hit sections and solos galore.Atthe end, all three drummers trade bars over a killer Gadd groove.Everydrummer who aspires to play like these guys should own this video. Editorial Review

The bravura drumming of the indomitable Buddy Rich may not be the onlything to recommend about this video, but it's certainly the main attraction.Taped in February 1973 at a nightclub in Rochester, New York, the 65-minuteperformance reveals a virtuoso who was still at the top of his game at age 55.Rich's power, dynamics, and sheer musicianship leave little doubt that he wasthe leader of his big band in much more than name only. But while his young, mostly little-known musicians are all strong players (notwithstanding thosehorrible '70s haircuts), the arrangements are less than stellar. Their attemptsto turn the likes of the Beatles' "Norwegian Wood" and Paul McCartney's "UncleAlbert/Admiral Halsey" into swinging jazz outings are downright cheesy. Betterto skip to the end, when Rich plays two superb solos on a Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BUDDY RICH GREATES DRUMMER WHO EVER DREW BREATH
THAT IS A QUOTE FROM GENE KRUPA HIMSELF! i GET TIRED OF PEOPLE WHO INSIST ON COMPARING BUDDY WITH GENE OR WORSE RINGO{COME ON MAN WHERE ARE YOUR EARS? IT'S POINTLESS AND IGNORANT TO COMPARE BUDDY WITH RINGO IN ANY DIMENSION, ONE IS A ROCK DRUMMER THE OTHER IS A BIG BAND DRUMMER! FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW THE DIFFERENCE LIKE THE POSTER WHO DID THE ORIGINAL COMPARISON - LET'S JUST SAY THEY ARE WORLDS APART!THE VERY IDEA TO SUGGEST BUDDY IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM SHOULD TAKE A BACK SEAT TO EITHER JOE JONES KRUPA AND OF ALL THE DRUMMERS RINGO STAR IS SICK!i JUST DON'T GET A PERSON WHO MAKES IDIOTIC STATEMENTS LIKE THAT.. THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO i THINK THAT EVERY DRUMMER SHOULD OWN IT THE AUDIO COULD BE BETTER BUT IT'S NOT BAD FOR 1973! GROW UP PEOPLE, WHAT? DO YOU REALLY NEED EVERYTHING TO SOUND LIKE IT WAS MIXED BY THE GRP GROUP? USE YOUR BRAINS, IT WAS RECORDED IN 1973..GIMME A BREAK WITH THE "i NEED EVERYTHING PERFECT" JIVE

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential for Buddy fans
It's always a joy watching and listening to Buddy play, but most of the video clips of him are on various composite videos, such as "Classic Drum Solos and Drum Battles" (ASIN B00005RDSJ) and its companion Volume II (ASIN B00006EDPF).In those, and similar videos Buddy's pyrotechnic drumming is showcased, but his overall playing is lost in the dazzle.

The incredible jazz drummer Buddy Rich was one of the most powerful musicians of his time. That power is on display in this blazinglive concert of no-nonsense big band swing filmed at the 1982 Montreal JazzFestival. The seven tracks on this datehighlight Rich's propulsive, perpetual motion from his drum set, churning outcomplex polyrhythms on the tracks "Hookin' It," "Brush Strokes," and "Carioca."Rich leads the band through an engaging "Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Live Performance
I really enjoyed this video. Having viewed the VHS performance "Rich At The Top", I eagerly awaited to view this version of West Side Story & Time Check. I wasn't disappointed.5-0 out of 5 stars Buddy Rich- Live at the '82 Montreal Jazz Fest- WOW
The box say's "Buddy and his Band at the height of their popularity"This is a MUST see video for fans of Buddy and jazz. The sound on this is top notch and of course Buddy is at his best, he wouldn't allow any less. The highlight {if you can get any better than the best} has to be the extended solo in Buddy's signature piece "West Side Story " medly. Again the sound is right on, you can almost feel his intensity, and at the same time his grace.5-0 out of 5 stars Buddy at his best. Even at 65!
If you're a Buddy Rich fan, this video is a must-have.Not only do you get to witness his unbelieveable drumming, but there's a short episode of his temper as well.At the end of Bob Mintzer's "Good News", there is one short instant where the brass didn't quite play a note exactlytogether. Buddy smirks for a second, pauses before the last chord, andclearly says "what happened? ". He then cues the last chord, after which he continues to humiliate the trumpet section with more wordsand gestures.Aside from that distraction, the band is smokin' and thesoloists (including saxists Andy Fusco, Walt Weiskopf, Steve Marcus) areespecially strong. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great watching... ! ! !
First, a bit of a warning... This is NOT a drum instructional DVD... There's no instruction, nor are all the shots EXCLUSIVELY overheads of drum kits. In a CLASSIC "soundie" clip of THE COUNT BASIE ORCHESTRA you don't even see Sonny Payne up close until that classic ending (and I'm somewhat surprized it didn't get censored if you realize the apparent symbolism of his gestures...! ! !) - - With that said, this DVD is a rare chance to see many of the greats in their hey day and some really funny moments as well (such as the drum battles and the shot of Milt Buckner playing piano with Lionel Hampton and bobbing up and down so violently he looks like he's about to go through the roof.) Also featured is rare footage of Philly Joe... a wild shot of Poppa Joe doing the conga trick with the drums...a VERY young Buddy Rich... and a delightfully fun clip with Cab Calloway.Kenny Clarke's there too... in fact, the most fun and educational part of the video is getting to see the volution of the different drumming styles.

This dvd along with Classic Solos Vol 1 and 2 from Hudson Music provide a greatview of the most important drummers in history. Editorial Review

Superior production values, great playing, and a host of bonus featurescombine to make this arguably the best available audiovisual representation ofthe late Buddy Rich and his music. Recorded in 1985 in San Francisco, thehourlong concert by Rich and his 15-piece big band was thought to have been lostin a fire. The master tapes were "rediscovered" in 2000, leading to themeticulous preparation (a full 14 text pages are devoted to technical details)of this DVD release. As always, it's the powerhouse playing of "Mr. Drums"that's of prime interest, and to that end the producers have used bonus tracksto isolate Rich's solos (as well as those of the brilliant saxophonist SteveMarcus and five others), including two on the "Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Master at work
I'm sure everyone that had heard BR play before knows that he is the best drummer by far. So I'm not going to accentuate that fact again here. What I do want to says is that the recording & audio quality of this DVD is one of the best I'd heard. When I first played the dvd and the main menu's music came up (it's a fragment of one of BR solos), my jaw just drop to the floor `cus is was just like having BRich playing in my living room, and I know about drum set in the living room , my dad is a drummer from that era. 5-0 out of 5 stars Buddy...still the greatest!
I have been playing for 32 years and I have never seen anyone close to Mr. Rich. I can still recall all ten concerts of his I attended, and can truthfully say that in the 17 years that he has been dead, I still consider him the 'worlds greatest drummer'. Case closed!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great to see Buddy Play
I've seen Buddy Rich play dozens of times and this DVD brings back many fine memories.I thought the sound quality was excellent. However I found the video production to be very disappointing. They built a really cool plexi-glass stage for Buddy to play on, the perfect opportunity to get a close up look at Buddy's foot, but they blew it. All you see is the snares across the bottom head and the Manny's Music logo. What a shame. When Buddy's starts a solo in West Side Story we get to see the bass player turning pages rather than the man doing his thing, you mean to tell me you didn't know that solo was coming.I sure did, I know his book well. They mentioned they had a number of cameras running iso, I guess the page turning was the most interesting shot they had.Shame on whoever did the camera switching and editing, they really missed the boat.Knowing what a perfectionist Buddy was, I'm not sure he would have let this go.I did really enjoy watching him though, I really miss going to see him play ...
