5-0 out of 5 stars "The 'day-the-world's-gone-mad' has arrived, at last."
The cream of the Broadway Theatre Archive, this production has it all--the stories of Anton Chekhov, Neil Simon to mold the stories into exquisitely timed and hilarious theatre, and a cast that is hard to duplicate.Starring Marsha Mason, who plays everything from a maid to a lady of the night; Ed Asner who is a terrific, blustering general; and Lee Grant, who ranges from a wily and assertive employer to a wild woman with a "nervous disorder," the production also includes Bob Dishy, who has an elastic face and expressive eyes, starring in "The Sneeze" and "The Seduction," and Gary Dontzig as the "Drowned Man" and a 19-year-old son about to be introduced to sex for the first time.
5-0 out of 5 stars CROWN JEWELS
From the Broadway Theatre Archive, comes THE GOOD DOCTOR, an extraordinary collection of plays by Neil Simon, one of the most prolific and beloved playwrights of all time.Richard Chamberlain is masterful as the writer, and ties the seven wonderful plays about life together, while performing in several of the portraits. The stories are humorous, touching, sad, and all impact nerves, where the realities of life are stored.

Bernadette Peters is a glorious anachronism, a tiny New Yorker with abig voice, coppery pre-Raphaelite curls, and the sort of ripe physicality that made it logical she should ignore PC and have legendary pinup artist Vargas capture her for an albumcover portrait. While most of her musical peers were getting funky, getting in touch with themselves, or getting high, Peters was honing her skills as a musical actress, setting her compass by Broadway with occasional detours to Hollywood. Now Peters is acknowledged as one of the Great White Way's natural wonders, a bona fide Tony-winning musical comedy star performing here in her first full-length video concert.Read more

Bernadette Peters is wonderfull. She has a great voice. You have to order this DVD. You'll enjoy every minute of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bernadette ~ The Broadway Babe
Had a great night with friends watching this concert. For anyone who loves the Broadway Musical ~ here is a tribute concert that shines. Her interpretation of Sondheim is magic and the diversity is awesome. We travel through torch songs like, "Not a Day goes by" or "Move On" to "You could drive a Person Crazy" and "Hello Little Girl". I especially enjoyed her slant on "Later".
5-0 out of 5 stars Born for Broadway...and Sondheim
Has there ever been a more natural artistic partnership than that between Bernadette Peters and Stephen Sondheim?Bernadette is one of the few performers I've seen who can handle a Sondheim song and deliver the depth and flavor it needs. It's only natural then that she would devote a good portion of this program to his works.

5-0 out of 5 stars a masterpiece
this production has some of the greats in it and directing it. jason robards and colleen dewhurst really make the characters come alive. it is a bittersweet story, all the more satisfying if you happened to have seen "long days journey into night" first. Eugene O'Neill is a master.

5-0 out of 5 stars totally satisfied
Delivery was prompt in a well conditioned packaging.
5-0 out of 5 stars Theatrical Experience of the Decade?
This play revival marks the pinnacle of several noteworthy careers. Jose Quintero has made a reputation, in part, as his generation's foremost interpreter of O'Neill. Colleen Dewhurst was one of the great stage actresses of her time. Those aware of the history of the American Stage, know about Jason Robards' credentials when it comes to nailing down an O'Neill character. Throw in Hal Holbrooke for good measure, in ostensibly his finest stage performance apart from Mark Twain Tonight, and you've got a harmonic convergence of the highest order. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fab Fun For Guys & Dolls Fans
This recording is a wonderful opportunity for anyone who has not seen the Broadway cast perform this fun show! This is how I was introduced to Faith Prince, whose performance is ASTONISHING and FAR surpasses the relatively lame one from the movie. It's not a full reproduction of the show, but all of the big numbers are done completely and you can >>> SEE <<< the fun that the cast is having with the music and the roles.
5-0 out of 5 stars It shows the less attractive sides of some of the actors
The documentary is a thrilling piece of how the 1992 revival CD of Guys and Dolls was made. My only regret is that they never mention the name of the show. I never knew that Faith Prince was a dirty mouth and 40 years old. I didn't know that Peter Gallagher had rotten teeth. I didn't know that Jozie de Guzman had more gums than teeth. It is a good documentary nonetheless.

5-0 out of 5 stars One heck of a documentary
I watched a bit of this when I got the role of Nicely-Nicely Johnson at the Company Theatre in Norwell. I enjoyed the bits of footage at the beginning and the bit where, "Adelaide doesn't say [expletive deleted]. That was the dirtiest bit of the documentary. I didn't realize that the director was such a good singer. I also didn't know that Peter Gallagher had such ugly teeth. I didn't know that Jozie de Guzman had more gums than teeth. I like looking at them in the pictures of the inlay card. All in all, it is a very nice documentary. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome tonic for sorry times
This play was originally produced on broadway in 1942, at a pretty anxious time in the world.Thorton Wilder certainly had a genius for heightening the effect his plays had by attacking the formality of structure.More than Our Town, his relentless unravelling of boundaries between audience and cast, production and chaos, seems to break down the resistance to the message he intends to get across. The best example of this is the hours of the night segment that ends this piece. After going through such contortions to make it appear that the cast assigned to perform it are gone, and the play certainly should end right there with the audience deserving to get their money back, this is, of course, the most magnificent, enlightening and heartening piece that ties everything before it together.
4-0 out of 5 stars "The Antrobuses--your hope, your despair, yourselves."
Ignoring the conventions of time, this playful "message play," directed by Jack O'Brien, studies one family from the days of the glaciers and dinosaurs to a post-apocalyptic, modern world.George Antrobus (Harold Gould), the inventor of the wheel, and Maggie (Sada Thompson), his wife, the inventor of the apron, have two children, Gladys and Henry (who was previously called Cain).Sabina (Blair Brown), the flirtatious maid, acts as the initial guide to the characters and action, commenting on their interactions. As the play progresses through the eras, author Thornton Wilder raises questions about civilization and values.George, by Act II, is convinced that the world is made for pleasure and power, but in the final act, after a modern world cataclysm, the family confronts what is truly important in their lives.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Mt. St. Helen's version of the Nutcracker"
Thank the Deity, someone had the good "nunsense" to bring back the original Sr. Mary Paul and Rue McClanahan. What happened to Srs. Robert Ann, Mary Leo, and Mary Hubert? Though cute and entertaining, the original cast is still the best. In addition. let Sr. Amnesia take care of Sr. Mary Annette, the puppet. If you're a Nunsense fan, I'd recommend buying it, but beware, it's not as good as 1 and 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love 'em!
This is the first "Nunsense" show I've ever seen and it is freakin' hilarious and also very moving. Apart from being great comedians, these nuns and Father Virgil have great voices. Wish I could say the same for Rue McLachanan. Favorite moments:

4-0 out of 5 stars ''It started out like a song''Putting it Together
If you are a fan of Stephen Sondheim, or yet to discover many of his finest musical numbers, this show taped live in 2001 is a must.
4-0 out of 5 stars Totally Worth It!
I have to comment on the people complaining about the fact that there is no plot. This is a MUSICAL REVUE, which is, simply put, a PLOTLESS variety show with a unifying factor (in this case, Sondheim). The fact that there was a thin plot was nice, but not a requirement. Sometimes I am amazed at what people write, based on sheer ignorance. The cast was great, especially Burnett, who still has an incredible set of pipes for a woman her age. I found Ruthie Henshall to be a little irritating, though. True, she is pretty and can dance and sing, but the way she sings through her teeth half of the time, without opening her mouth, began to grate on my nerves a bit. But I'm nitpicking. Order this. Watch it. Love it. Oh, and Bronson is an absolute HOOT. Marginal voice but still a great performance on his part. ... Read more

Being a farm boy from Illinois, "the-ay-ter" could have been in a foreign country and I would have never been wiser.Area schools performed shows written especially for high schools (like "Mississippi Melody" and "Up On Old Smokey").In 1971, I had just purchased a state-of-the-art reel to reel tape recorder and was anxious to do a bit of experimentation with it.As fate would have it, I saw an ad on CBS for the 1971 Tony Awards telecast and thought I'd see what kind of sound quality I would get from the tinny little speaker on the television.I had no idea the format for that year was to perform 1 song from each award-winning show using as many of the original cast members as possible.Even though the sound quality was far less than perfect, I realized I had an audio tape of more original cast members singing songs from Broadway shows than I could shake a stick at.And many of the songs were familiar from television variety shows like Ed Sullivan etc.

Editorial Review

This video, from the Broadway Theater Archive of PBS's New Yorkaffiliate, WNET, offers an imaginative, if occasionally heavy-handed, televisionadaptation of Ntozake Shange'spoetic theater piece. Originally staged at the Public Theater in New York, this 1982 production is directed by Oz Scott, who transforms what were a seriesof feminine monologues about the black woman's struggle to find her place in aman's world. What Shange's language conjures by itself onstage, Scott helpsvisualize on video, a proposition that misses as often as it hits. Languageabout boyfriends isn't made clearer or more vital by showing us who's beingtalked about. But the overproduction can't strip Shange's language of its juicyrichness--and it is offered with power and humor by a cast that includes then-fledgling actresses Lynn Whitfield and Alfre Woodard as well as Shange herself.Read more

Great work! I have heard parts of this play through out the years- but I was not expecting to see or hear-what I heard and what I saw on this dvd. It is off the chain! If you want to see real black talent-check it out! Also big props to Lynn Whitfield (damn- she is too sexy in this short skirt and midriff blouse- walking down the street- and giving it up real- This women can act and has great command of the stage(also see her work in "Zora is my name!"-another tour deforce- for above the board talent- regardless of the color of the production! & a big shout out to Mrs.Ruby Dee).Ms. Woodard is one of the main reasons why I purchased this dvd - I wanted to view her earlier work and she is up in here-giving it up! 4-0 out of 5 stars A Very Good Page-to-Screen Presentation
Lanford Wilson is the modern day Chekhov, and while "Fifth of July" isn't the absolute best example of this, it comes pretty darned close. The only thing really out of place is William Hurt as Kenneth, here portrayed by Richard Thomas. Throw away all preconceptions of Thomas's from his most famous earlier work (involving a family drama), and you'll find yourself very satisfied with his performance, as he is able to play the typically reserved, held-back Wilson-esque character of Kenneth with greath verve and conviction. He seems to be having so much fun, always smiling and giggling, but you can see in Thomas's performance that there's deep emotional baggage stirring, and even though William Hurt would've been able to more thoroughly convey Kenneth's complex character, Thomas does a very good job and it doesn't affect the quality of the production at all. Just don't stare directly at that mole-thingie on his face!5-0 out of 5 stars A great play by a great playwright
This absorbing, amusing and moving play receives a splendid performance by an able cast. While Richard Thomas, Jeff Daniels and the rest acquit themselves splendidly, it is Swoozie Kurtz' brilliant performance that sticks in the mind. This really is a taught-me-what-it-means-to-be-a-human-being kind of play.Try it, you'll love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great cast doing a great play!
What a pleasure it is to see this production again.I've seen several live productions of "Fifth of July;" and it has become one of my favorite plays.I well remember this broadcast version from many years ago when it was first broadcast on PBS; I was blown away by the fine performances then, and I am still. It was unforgettable. For those of us who remember the 60s and early 70s, its like welcoming dear old friends into my home. It's a terrific, warmhearted and human play. And really funny too. The performances are first rate all, but Swoosie Kurtz is amazing and touching as an ex-hippy with a fried brain, heart of gold and the wisdom of an old soul. Thanks to Broadway Theater Archives for this special treat. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the Buy!!!
If you are looking for a night full of stars, humor, being touched, and are a Broadway fan, you should definitely buy this. Not all of the people you'd first consider stars are here, but there are some modern stars who just might become your new favorites. It was especially cool for me to see Audra McDonald after seeing her live in Anyone Can Whistle at Ravinia. Liza Minneli has changed the way most people sing "Some People", so though I didn't have a problem with it, some people might. Still, though you might not rate every song or singer an A+, they all worked very hard and the effect is nice. This is a wonderful add to any Broadway collection. I live in Los Angeles and am not very familiar with Broadway Musical Stars, however, I believe this DVD is a prime example of why these women are Broadway stars.Talk about star power!!!Yes, it is sad that Julie Andrews lost her voice and was unable to sing, but she lent a wonderful spirit to the whole show. What more can I say, even if you don't know Broadway, it's magic has been captured on this DVD. (The picture quality and sound are wonderful.)

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL WONDERFUL!
BUY THIS! It is worth the money. I love this because all of my favorite singers are on it. I especially love Liza Minnelli and Linda Eder. I even discovered a new favorite of mine Audra McDonald. I would definitely recommend this to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the finest issues in this series
Terrific production of this Beckett play.Worth gives a brilliant performance.Glad it was documented.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction to beckett's theatrical work
This is a wonderful production of Happy Days, as far as I know faithful to Beckett's specific directions (he considered his stage directions as important as the dialog). Irene Worth is magnificent, as is the actor who played Willy. By all means, buy this DVD and enjoy it. If you're new to Beckett, this will whet your appetite for more. For the big Beckett fan (like me), I highly recommend Beckett on Film, the 4-DVD set of all 19 of Beckett's theatrical works, with a fine documentary and commentary, done by 19 contemporary directors. It's pricey but well worth the money.
5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it, carousing my sense of timbre.
everyone seesm to get confused befuddled(s),opaque when comprehensibility is the focus when in fact there really isn't anything directly direct in Becjkett, it is like a "phanthom" language we know and don't know, sure English, but an English suffused,impacted,pre-opted,turned and whirled/twirled around for contemplation. Irene-y gets Beckett I think in the gradations of restriant she harbors, she takes into her limited heart here. Beckett keeps a short leash on his actors, like musicians reading notes and dynamic markings, articulation of timbre, of the English language. Listening to Beckett is like accumulations, distributions of tones, and timbres, fragments of sounds vocables consconants, all beautiful if you know where to listen. I find the weight of time to be painfully there, that was his intent I think to make you feel as if you are dragging yourself through the day, arduously, how time places "weight" weight of being alive, of living, of attenuations of consciousness, what a human being needs to do to keep going, to go on. This weight is only releived with the sense of lightness, some call it humor, but it is humor within Beckett's context. You may find too much the comedic in Beckett and sometimes it is overdone, overwrought, wrong-headed,where the words are just sputtered, spitted out without a sense of its placement within an elegant structure, Beckett build, constructs for us, for him,for you and for me. Understanding I think happens only over periods of time, swabs of time, temporality in packages time in parcels. Beckett continues to be the extreme challenge for the actor, the virtuosic if that is what you think you want or think you need as an artist of the word,of the drama. ... Read more
