2-0 out of 5 stars What Were They Thinking??
Okay, I got this movie at the library. Now everybody told it was horrible, but I had to see it myself. I've only just flicked through a couple of the scenes, but what I have seen is enough. First of all, most of the sets that I've seen are AWFUL! For example, watch the "Jacob and Sons/Joseph's Dreams" scene. It looks like it was a computer graphic! Is it? Why? Also, the costumes! Why is the narrator in sneakers and what's with her shirt? You really have to see it to believe it. She can't really sing, either. The kids look so gray and drab! They could have done a much better job with this production, as it was such an important milestone in the partnership of ALW and TR.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent movie
I love this movie. It's not quite a stage version, but not a movie version. It's a little of both.Donny Osmond is a great Joseph and Maria Friedman is a great Narrator. The rest of the cast is the best they can be.Everyone sings well, dances well, and acts really well. It's cute, funny, sad, and heartbreaking. If you like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice this one is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great movie!!

excellent video.absolutely hilarious, especially if you are3-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Knock-Off
Having watched and loved Nunsense, I was prepared to enjoy Nunsense 2. Although there is a ton of talent onstage, the total effect is lightweight. I kept waiting for this video to get to the good part, but that never happened. I wish it had. ... Read more

    2-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment!
I must agree with a few others on here that I was disappointed with this version of 'Peter Pan'.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you liked the Play, you'll love the Concert!!
This was an all star performance of the first order. The settting in the Royal Theater, the scale and depth of the ensemble cast is simply mind blowing. With regard to the role of Eponine by Lea Salonga. Ms. Salonga is fantastic in the role of Eponine. Eponine is a tragic person, she is the virtuous one in a family of thieves, she is street smart yet vulnerable. And she should be angry since he father was going to marry her off to a member of his gang (A drunken thug). Eponine runs away from her family and is rescued by Marius with whom she falls in love only to have him fall in love with another. In Lea Salonga's Eponine I see all those elements brought together in a way that is touching and heartbreaking. Just listening to her and Michael Ball in "A little fall of rain" was the highlight of this concert to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than ever
I've had this musical on vhs (taped off public tv) for years and have always found it exhilarating. I decided to get the DVD because my tape was wearing out! :-)This musical cannot compare to anything else (except maybe seeing the musical in person). Among others, Colm Wilkinson and Michael Ball are excellent). It's an emotionally charged presentation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended
If you have seen the musical, this is the perfect DVD to bring back the memory.Although no replacement for the stage show, it is far better than listening to a CD.The performers are in costume and very much in charater even though singing in concert. There are some video clips of the actual musical inserted during the concert that helps you keep your time frame. It goes without saying that the "dream cast" gives a great performance.Next best thing to being there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Musicals!
When I first watched Into the woods I was about 2-4 yrs old, around that age and could never get the name right. I used to call it "Granny In The Woods" and had a vhs t.v. recording that finally bit the dust not to long ago because of age and the dirt lodged in the tape. The music and the acting captivated me and made me want to watch more even though I didn't get some of the adult humor that was in the show that made it more pleasent for everyone in my family to watch with me. It was one thing I could watch that I won't outgrow. The original broadway cast far outshines the 2002 broadway revival cast and the british cast, to me anyway. Bernadette Peters and Joanna Gleason shine in this excellent musical. Most of the other cast members I've haven't seen in any other things and probably wouldn't have heard of them if not for this play. This is definitely a quality dvd recording. Even though the dvd has no special features it makes up for that with it's crisp sound and picture. It's clarity is magnificent, the cameras are placed just right to where you're not focused on a character that isn't speaking instead of the one that is the main character of the scene. It's done on stage instead of a movie set which just makes the experience more lifelike and makes you feel like you're in the theatre watching the play in the best seat possible. This is one musical that the whole family can enjoy and is also one of the best musicals of the 80s up there with Phantom, Joseph, Cats, Superstar and many more of the 70s and 80s! If youwant a wholesome, enjoyable thing to watch, then this is the dvd for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Into the woods, a great musical! I GREAT DVD!
this is absolutely my favorite musical! my school is putting this show on, and i cant wait. but the dvd is just so great! its perfect for anyone that likes broadway, sondheim and the experience of broadway. the only thing is that this show is really long, but even thats fine! the show is a perfect blend of comedy and tragedy all in one! YOU MUST GET IT!

4-0 out of 5 stars A very nice presentation
After performing in the pit for a production of this in my hometown, I wanted to see the original Broadway cast doing this musical. The set is fantastic! What a joy to watch! For the sharp humor side of this show, I'd strongly suggest this DVD recording, but for a more musical expeirience I would buy the soundtrack of the original BW cast. The DVD has a few lagging tempos, which is very annoying after listerning to the snappy soundtrack. Also there are 2 notes that don't quite make it up there on the DVD.Overall, I would highly recomend this DVD recording; I just love Little Red Riding Hood's humor. The CD is worth a listen too."And home before dark!" ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Major Production
Just saying, wouldn't it be cool if they made a major production of this show? It's cool onstage, but why not continue the legacy of one of the most famous shows in Broadway history with a major production. They could do what they did with Rent, have all of the stars from the original cast be in it. But then again, the dancing is amazing on stage. Can they pull that off in a major production?

5-0 out of 5 stars Cats - A Must Purchase
It's kind of funny... I guess I have a different perspective on this.I remember playing the music from selections from Cats... from Memories... to Skimbleshanks, The Railway Cat... to Old Deuteronomy's music.
    5-0 out of 5 stars I WAS excited....but now I'm just angry
I made a big mistake in purchasing this dvd.I thought it would be good to commemorate such a famous broadway musical by buying the commemorative edition dvd.Well, unbeknownst to me, this musical was a big flying turd.A big old airborne meatsicle of poopy turds.Granted I don't like musicals, animals OR broadway, but I thought this would be worth a shot.Well, the only thing getting a shot NOW is me....cause I need 30 CC's of Uncrapulator to get this crapfest out of my brain. There is so much poop in my brain now that it's hard to know the difference between when I'm thinking and when the poo is just shifting around.I have to keep my head completely still, or else my ears fart and it's totally embarassing. Thanks SO MUCH, Cats the Musical (Commemorative Edition)...you have ruined my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for DVD with extras
I also noticed Mary Martin at the curtain call at the end of the show (you can't actually see her face - I just deduced it from the white hair). Why was her performance removed and no credit was given?Whether it was her peak performance or not should not be an issue.Nevertheless, this video is a gem.It really is a historical glimpse at musical theater. The fact that theater only lives for the moment and is seldom preserved - is one of the most frustrating aspects of the theater.Luckily we have a few videos like this one to help us remember.WE NEED THIS VIDEO IN DVD FORMAT WITH EXTRAS - AND MARY MARTIN'S PERFORMANCE SHOULD BE INCLUDED - PLUS OUTTAKES AND BACKSTAGE BRAWLS - WE WANT IT ALL.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live Broadway Captured!
This taping absolutely blew me away! I originally bought it for the single purpose of seeing Barry Bostwick perform "Summer Loving" (instead of the talentless Travolta) after hearing the recording of the orginal "Grease!" cast. What an incredible find. As someone who is in love with musical theatre-I consider this film a treasure! To see such talented performers reviving the roles that they created is a once in a life time oportunity caught here for generations to fall in love with. You are treated to Broadway's Grand Dame Ethel Merman singing 2 of her timeless classics, Nell Carter bringing character and energy to Cole Porter music, Barry Bostwick and Carol Demas proving once and for all who the real Danny and Sandy were, Stephen Nathan and David Haskell tackling probably one of the most challenging duets ever-from "Godspell", the enigmatic Chita Rivera dancing to "The Shriners' Ballet" as well as singing and hoofing to "Little One New York",multi-talented Jerry Orback singing "Try to Remember" and the show-stopping "Lullaby of Broadway", and Ray Walston, gleefully reminising "The Good Ol' Days". Any self-respecting Broadway and/or musical theatre fan should own this taping. It gives the audience a glipmse back to a time when it took pure talent to make in on the Great White Way!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great buy!
At first, I wasn't a big fan of Broadway. I mean sure, a little music here, a little dancing there, but I just didn't see what's so fantastic about some street in New York. One of my closer friends gave me this video, and I was about to return it to the store, when I decided to give it a try. Boy was it a great decision. I didn't even know the songs, and I was up dancing and singing all over my livingroom carpet. For either the big broadway fan, or the bored bum, this VHS is sure to get you laughing, crying, and dancing in your seat. Want a great buy? Don't look farther.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What Becomes A Legend Most
I first saw this play during previews of its disgracefully short Broadway run in 1973, and I knew serious theatre was in trouble when audiences simply didn't turn out for this magnificent and important play.I vividly remember that the first time I saw this show, shortly before the curtain rose, the ushers actually escorted members of the audience to better seats, moving us from the rear mezzanine to the front balcony.Without being asked!During previews!I don't ever expect to see that happen again in a Broadway theatre.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I live from dream to dream--it is NOT better than death."
Written by James Prideaux and directed by George Schaeffer, this adaptation of the play for which Julie Harris won the Tony Award in 1973, is a stunning example of great theater commissioned for television.Seemingly without friends or allies after the death of Abraham Lincoln, Mrs. Lincoln (Julie Harris) is at odds with the world. Her sister and southern relatives have always believed Lincoln beneath her.Congress has refused to reimburse her for installing central heating and indoor plumbing in the White House, and they have refused to approve her pension. The press uses her vituperation to their own advantage, and the fates have taken two of her sons before adulthood.
5-0 out of 5 stars I Saw The Final Performance of "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln"
I was fortunate to be in the audience for the final performance ofMiss Julie Harris in "The Last of Mrs. Lincoln" on Broadway. When the curtain came down and the thuderous applause began, there wasn't a dry eye in the house.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Newley's masterpiece and Tanner's acclaimed performance
Did you know that Anthony Newley never sold the film rights to Stop The World...? The studio's promotion notwithstanding, this Warner Brothers release (and the two additional versions that followed, with Sammy Davis, Jr. and Peter Scolari, respectively) are filmed records of the show in performance on stage. Newley was, in fact, so protective of this show and so concerned with the idea that it might fail to earn it's place in the musical theatre canon because of mishandling or misrepresentation that he twice refused to appear in filmed versions of the show. After the New York critics raved about him as an actor/writer (rather than writer/actor?) he obsessed that the show would be shrugged off as a star vehicle, useless without him. (Likewise, his followup show "Roar of the Greasepaint..." starred Norman Wisdom until producer David Merrick refused to present it without Newley in the lead!) For the first (and only good) "film" Newley endorsed his London replacement Tony Tanner, who had turned this show and role into something of a personal triumph when Newley left for Broadway. Any reservations you may feel about coughing up $20 for a non-Newley "Stop The World" will be found unwarranted when you see Tanner's brilliant star turn. Wry and cynical, by turns put-upon and smug, Tanner breathes glorious life into one of the most alarmingly ambiguous musical roles ever written. Dripping with adroit charm, yet roundly dislikable, Tanner is a marvel to behold.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop The World, Please
I was disappointed with this release.I was looking for a 1996 version that starred Peter Scolari and Stephanie Zimbalist.Saw it on t.v. once and loved it,but, can't find a copy anywhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT.The more you see it the better it becomes
I saw this in the theatres about 10 times before it ever came out on video.Since I now have the video, I have seen it at least 50 times and it gets better each time. This is the type of show you must see about threetimes before it becomes great. Each time you see it, something new seemsto show up.Would not recommend it to anyone under 16. Try it, you'll loveit. It makes you think and use your brain. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "There's something so terrible here...no end ever...just no end."
Set in summer, 1933, in the depths of the Depression, Arthur Miller's most personal and intimate play focuses on the workers in a warehouse, a grim place in which men and women work for small wages and are grateful for the work.Appearing at the beginning of this production to set the scene, Miller observes that the Civil War and the Depression were the only times in American history in which the whole country was in the same boat-"You could not do a single thing that you wanted to do because no one had any money." The warehouse, he notes, became a grotesque sort of haven for the employees since they, at least, had jobs.Miller's own experience in a warehouse shows in his exceptionally realistic portrayal of the workers, men who often lose themselves in alcohol to escape reality, and women who must put up with sexual abuse and mistreatment to save their jobs.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the classics!
This is another memory in my favorite plays - I saw this on A&E in the '80's and fell in love with Marc Singer - his acting, his looks - this version from the ACT in San Francisco is sensuous, and gives a mighty kick to the play - makes a delightful play even more so.
5-0 out of 5 stars great rendition!
I love shakespeare and am, in fact, in a shakespeare class at school, so I might be biased. anyway, I borrowed this dvd from my teacher so I could watch it at home and wasn't disappointed. it's wonderful! it's done in the commedia dell'arte style and reminds me of when I saw it in oxford. it was great then and fredi olster and marc singer are really nice together. the only reason I might give this four stars would be because the quality of the recording. it's a stage production and filmed like one, not like a movie! I didn't hold it against them, though, because that's certainly not their fault.

IT IS MY FAVORITE COMMEDY.MARC SINGER'S AND FREDI OLSTER PERFORMANCE REALLY MAKE THIS PRODUCTION WONDERFUL.I LOVE THE STYLE IT IS PRESENTED. 4-0 out of 5 stars Still resonant after all these years
I caught this on PBS this weekend and was quite impressed.Despite its *very* dated appearance, it drew me in immediately with its wit - it made me sad again at Wendy Wasserstein's untimely death. But it was not just funny - the characters felt real and you could sympathize with their ambitions and ultimately their unfulfilled desires.I would recommend to any fan of Wasserstein, esp. as this is probably the only chance you will get to actually see the play performed.
5-0 out of 5 stars superb
A play that takes you into the distorted world of a women's college, circa 1970, but still relevant to today in its main themes...Although the language has been somewhat cleaned up - the F word edited out, among others - it's a wonderfully fast excursion into the wit and mind of the beloved Wendy Wasserstein, and one not to be missed...Think of it as what Seinfeld would have looked like without men, and then add large doses of richly observed and well-acted scenes from a young and brilliant Meryl Streep, and a fresh Jill Eikenberry, and a fabulously lithe Swoosie Kurtz, nicely shot to give you its sense of being a play for the stage...H

    5-0 out of 5 stars "I feel as if I'm under-articulating."
Wendy Wasserstein's debut play, directed by Merrily Mossman and Steven Robman, is brought to hilarious life in this finely cast production starring Swoosie Kurtz, Jill Eikenberry, and Meryl Streep.Setting the play in 1970 at Mount Holyoke College, Wasserstein focuses on six young women who are about to graduate and go out into a world newly sensitized to feminist goals.Caught between traditional values of home, hearth, and finding a husband, and sexual liberation, women's liberation, and personal liberation, these women are on the cusp of a whole new way of life. The play opens a few years after graduation as the women meet to reminisce about their lives in college, where "milk-and-crackers" teas and "gracious living" have dominated.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pippen, DVD
I had just seen the show in Seattle and it was great to see Ben Vereen in the role of the lead player. I wish more broadway shows were on DVD's.

1-0 out of 5 stars WHERE'S THE SHOW???
Ok, this is by far the most pathetic taping of a show (although Sweeney Todd comes to a close second).Where is the show?!They cut out the "Glory" battle scene and just had the actors come out and look happy instead of creepy like they should when they do the slow-mo battle scene (that was not in the movie...).Also, where is "I Guess I'll Miss the Man?"That's a BEAUTIFUL song that was cut from the movie why? Also what about "Prayer for a Duck" and MANY others!!!This is by far the worst ladies and gentlemen and completely ruins the show created by Stephen Schwartz and the great Bob Fosse!
4-0 out of 5 stars PIPPIN, HIS LIFE AND TIMES
Pippin is the court jester of Broadway musicals. The story of a 9th Century son of a Roman king who seeks to find the meaning in his life is as casual as a troupe of travelling medieval entertainers, yet as entertaining as it's Broadway rock contemporaries; Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, and even Rent. Great early '70's rock music with a heap of soul, (The Jackson 5 had a hit with Corner Of The Sky in 1972), and outstanding musical comedy performances by Tony winner Ben Vereen as the godlike omnipresent lead player, Chita Rivera as Pippin's scheming sex-brained mother, and Benjamin Rayson as the warring king. The late Bob Fosse coneived this musical based on a college project by composer/lyricist Stephen Schwartz. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Performer!
I recently purchased this WONDERFUL video and after watching it, kicked myself for not having purchased it sooner. McDonald, a now 4-time Tony winner and Julliard grad, shows in this video why she is so celebrated. She has an incredible vocal technique and is a delight in both her meaty and solid lower notes and her jaw-dropping high notes. She is the perfect performer because she not only sings her songs but also acts then, rather inhabits them, letting them seep deep in every part of her to deliever to the audience. You believe that McDonald has a deep connection with these lyrics in her performances. She is able to tackle every style of song in this video. Her performance of Jason Robert Brown's "Stars and the Moon" made me fall in love with it all over again. She delievers "Beat my Dog" with every air of believabilty and sass. I actually began to love "A Sleepin Bee" which, although a great song, has never been one of my personal favorites. Her performance of Sondheim's " So Many People" was wonderful as was "The Man that Got Away", a song that can be difficult to perform considering the performer who made it famous ( Judy Garland for those who don't know)."Some Days" was added to my list of favorite songs due to her powerhouse performance.5-0 out of 5 stars Treasure in a box
Is there anything Audra McDonald cannot do in the world of musical theater? Four Broadway roles, three Tony awards, two magnificently different solo recordings, and now this video of her in solo concert format would seem to indicate not.5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
I saw parts of this show on the local PBS station during a recent pledge drive.(The video includes songs not shown on PBS.)I also saw Ms. McDonald perform this show here in DC in May.The video capturessplendidly all of Ms. McDonald's myriad charms -- her stunning voice, hermusical and interpretive intelligence, her elegant grace and herunderstated charisma. While Ms. McDonald's show encompassed many songsthat she has performed on her solo CDs and on others, it does include anumber of songs that she has never recorded (or at least released).Theonly "flaw" the video has is that it doesn't include (and perhapsshe didn't perform it then) her show-stopping performance of the"aria" she introduced on Broadway in "Ragtime" --"Your Daddy's Son" -- which was even more powerful in an intimatesetting with only piano accompaniment.(Maybe she did perform it in Londonand it will be on the DVD, if such a thing is ever released.)Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Albee's 1971 Meditation on Death
Albee's 1971 meditation on death is a challenging work.It takes a delicate balance to bring the poetry of the text to life and to enrich the characters on stage without getting lost in the static nature of the unfolding drama. In a very quiet way, this play has as many barbs as "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" but contains only a fraction of the humor that is in "Virginia Woolf".The subject of death runs through every thread of the play and presents variations on the theme through the characters and their identities and conflicts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great doc!
great documentary for a great show! its like a reality show.. lea salonga is awesome!

5-0 out of 5 stars NOW I HAVE A 'MOVIE IN MY MIND!'
I don't know why I love MISS SAIGON, it's a tragedy that is so poignantly written that I sob every time I see it or listen to the music. But it is firmly attached to my heart as my favorite musical. And yes, I am obsessed; I have the playbills (both London and America), the CD's, the brochure-book and the hardback book.I even bought "Mr. Producer." so I could see Lea Salonga sing the songs that made her famous.I was so excited to discover a videotape was also made of the Making of Miss Saigon.Trust me, it's wonderful! It shows the genius creators Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil developing the story. But the best part of this video is the hunt for MISS SAIGON.It's reminiscent of the search for Scarlett, isn't it?Discovering both Lea Salonga and Monique Wilson must have been better than winning a lottery for the entire creative team.It certainly was a collaborative effort as even Cameron Macintosh was involved from the very beginning (as witnessed on this video). Now I want them to make the movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Time to update!
This was very informative and enlightening when it came out. Now that the show has successfully gone beyond the decade mark, it's time to produce an updated version.Miss Saigon remains as one of the most interesting and touching musicals ever produced and its fans deserve more! ... Read more
