5-0 out of 5 stars Love the film -- When will we get a region 1 DVD?
I have to disagree with several of the other reviewers -- you DON'T have to be British, or female, to love this film! The comedy is hilarious, warm, and touching; and, Pauline Collins' performance is a true work of art.
5-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE GIVE US SHIRLEY ON DVD IN THE US!!!
I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it. Shirley must touch a nerve with women both young & old. After I saw this movie, I wanted to go to Greece! Her reactions to the situations around her reflect the many times you want to say something, but keep your mouth shut. I will be one of the first if this one comes out on DVD here.

5-0 out of 5 stars PLEASE issue Shirley Valentine on DVD, won't you?
Millions of fans of this fabulous movie have waited impatiently for its issue on DVD for years. Why is it taking so long? What seems to be the problem? This movie is absolutely, without question, the most charming, heartwarming, fascinatiing, inspiring, humorous and inspirational movies of all time.Issuing it on DVD would be just a thrilling andmost satisying event in many, many years.Won't you PLEASE satisfy the pleas of devotees of this wonderful movie and issue it ASAP on Windescreen Stereo DVD?You won't be disappointed in the overwhelming response you get.Thank you! ... DONT listen to that silly man " a viewer" He doesnt know a thing. You can watch this extrodinary film on DVD and reap the hearty rewards of laughter and happiness. Or you can watch a VHS and dial up the internet while you toast your snax on a fire. In other words....The dvd is far better then any old VHS. This DVD is the best. Just believe me. You will thank me later. And see Spamalot too.

4-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air.
With all the deadly serious movies about the grail out there these days it's good to once again watch a movie that treats the subject with a sense of humor.
    5-0 out of 5 stars A Newt?
One of my favorite comedies, and Monty Python's best and most irreverent movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Monty Python troop made three films and had a television series that challenged the status quo by dealing with religion, class welfare, politics and dead parrots. There humor seems as fresh and rebellious today as when it was aired. Sometimes their humor was forced -- some scenes in The Meaning of Lif(e) ; however, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has the perfect mix of antitoletarism, irreverence and silly sots.

5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic comedy at its best!
This charming and enjoyable movie with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is a must see.Julia, with her trademark charm and smile, is adorable in this film and Hugh Grant as the ackward but handsome bachelor, fall in love in Notting Hill. But before they do, a lot of amusing things happen to them. The cast is wonderful and absolutely funny. Not since "Four Weddings and a Funeral" have I seen such a great assemble cast and team.I wish Hugh Grant would make more movies like this again. In short, I highly recommend it to those who enjoy romantic comedies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and cute but it works....
What happens when a Beverly Hills movie star walks into the quiet life of a Notting Hill bookseller? Sparks fly and it's one of those romantic comedies whereby you want to see them get passed the masks that are standing in the way. Vintage Roberts and Grant... and a surprise sweet British movie on the crazy ways people fall in and out and in and out of love.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the bonus material

Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful peice of classic cinema
    What a wonderful movie!
5-0 out of 5 stars Sense and Sensibility
Jane Austen was so wonderful at creating reality on the printed page. She sent up society by spot-on accurate portrayals of it. I feel like stressing this point. It sends up pretension by accurately portraying it. It is humour and realism at the same time. I can think of nobody better at doing this.
5-0 out of 5 stars A fine adaptation that will please most viewers, sans Grant
This film looks beautiful with that particular fresh and green loveliness that typifies the gentlefolk's 18th / 19th century England. It's a delight to watch, and the screenplay itself is wonderfully done, combining the sensible and likeable characters with the truly absurd characters, not to mention those whose characters are morally enfeebled. Jane Austen's depiction of human frailty as well as goodness has always impressed me as being true and very apt, striking home not merely with insightful viewing of human beings but also the very particular aspects that define a person of English gentility in the 1800s.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest
In our house, this is one of the all-time favourite movies. *Everyone* is perfectly cast, the style constantly changes (on-stage, off-stage, fantasy projections of how numbers could be staged...) and it manages to be convincing as a small-time theatre production while at the same time being colourful and imaginative. Covent Garden could learn a thing or two about staging from this movie. This is Ken Russell's greatest movie. We want a DVD!

"A Glittering Super Colossal Heart Warming Toe-Tapping Continuously Delightful Musical Extravaganza"

4-0 out of 5 stars Fluffy, silly, ridiculous, and I love it!
I have one copy of this tape and I guess I'd better get a backup -- doesn't look like it's coming out on DVD anytime soon and I'm gonna wear the poor thing out! It is a perfect portrayal of a bunch of wannabes who definitely will never-be... OK, except Tommy Tune who's probably just too good to perform as barely adequate. Christopher Gable likewise performs like a pro. (Is that perhaps a failing in this particular flick, which is all about a bunch of folks who aren't really that great?) Twiggy is perfectly cast. She's delightfully amateur as a singer; she's so likable, such an underdog, so frightened, how can she not be a sympathetic character? Even the awkward edits, which would be unforgivable in a more serious film, are perfect amateur glitches here (watch the jumpy splices in the "Perfect Young Ladies" number--really horrible, but just exactly the right thing to leave in on this movie). My favorite over-the-top silly bit is Polly's extended Grecian nymph fantasy. Tommy Tune leading the chorus of nymphs off to save the day is hysterical. And the whole thing takes place in the space of time it takes for Polly to make quick eye contact with Tony offstage... and ends when he winks back at her. Two seconds of real time. What girl hasn't had an extended fantasy compressed into a few seconds? It's all so cheerfully, delightfully cheesy. Not a guy's film. It's a chick flick. Perfect for the end of a really yucky day: curl up with your Teddy bear and something chocolate, plug this movie in, and enjoy the ride. It asks nothing of you, just happily delivers a series of giggles and a Yay! at the end. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Watch it over and over
It's a film that screams out to be viewed again and again. Just enough English humor to keep it jumping but it doesn't ruin this great film, a tongue in cheek mystery. Of course, the police inspector is a buffoon. My highest rating for this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Malevolence Behind What Looks Like Order
The Academy Award Winner for Best Original Screenplay, Julian Fellowes' script is so witty, literate and exceedingly intricate that even notoriously spontaneous rambler Robert Altman makes sure to do it proper justice.
5-0 out of 5 stars For Anglophiles
The depiction of life in the early part of the 20th centuary in an English country house is brilliant. I just loved watching Lady Trentham recounting her travails with training her maid. And I loved watching the servants bustling about trying to make their employers' lives comfortable. The snobbery and the bitching displayed was so very upper class English. For an anglophile like myself, who loves English books , this movie was delightful.

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess'sfamous novel is a masterpiece.Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of it's time, Excellent Kubrick Film
First off, this was not an easy bood to make into a movie, but Stanly Kubrick did an excellent job of doing so, not cutting out too many of the details either. This movie was way ahead of it's time, with excellent cinemetography, great acting, and excellent adaptation to script of a book that tells a tale of young Alex and his gang in a world he live raise "ultraviolence".A nice glimpse into the mind of an Antisocial.Rent this, Buy this, worth owning. One of the many of a series of Excellent Kubrick films of the 70's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second movie in a very special trilogy.
I ama fan of Stanley Kubrick, and I can see something very special about this movie, that makes me consider this one as the second installment of a so called, by myself, "trilogy". 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange & The Shining, they three share a feeling of loneliness, a sense of an external consciousness who is watching, from outside the Universe, the characters in the films, there is a feeling of a paranormal environment, manifest by the lighting, the sharp contrast of colors white, blue, red and fog in some of the scenes. And, this special environment is made even more surreal by the very special soundtracks of "Atmospheres" by Gyorgy Ligeti , "Timesteps" by Wendy Carlos, or thescore in The Shining by Carlos' couple too. Perhaps these three stories are part of the intervention of the Black Monoliths on the development of Mankind...Who knows? Buy these movies, they are highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars great film by kubrick but what else is new
this film is a has a very nice story about a man named alex who loves to rape woman and fighting/stealing,but that all changes when he goes to jail. then while in jail he hears about a thing that a doctor is doing to stop people from being bad. so later the doctor picks alex to be like a ginny pig for this test. he is forced to watch horrable things while hes eyes are forced open. after getting these test alex can one longer be bad because if he does he gets real sick..

3-0 out of 5 stars Words, words, words!I want to hear every one!
I have no reservations about the performances or the cinematography; only about the audio engineering: in Shakespeare where every word is cherished they must all be clearly audible, but this DVD is the only application where I have ever had to use full volume on my TV set, and that was still barely enough, and that is why I have deducted two stars! 5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I think that this is the best Pink Panther film that I've seen. Although I've only seen this one, A Shot In The Dark, and The Pink Panther {2006}. This film has incredible slapstick comedy by Peter Sellers. Starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, David Niven as Sir Charles Lytton, Robert Wagner as George Lytton, Capucine as Simone Clouseau, Brenda De Banzie as Angela Dunning, Colin Gordon as Tucker,Claudia Cardinale as Princess Dala, and The Pink Panther as himself. I can't wait to see the other ones. Well, that was my review.

Recently, from film noirs, You released the move "His Kind of Woman" with Robert Mitchum and Jane Russell. This movie I have been waiting to buy for many years. It is one of the best Adventure movie I have enjoyed very much. I recomend it to all ages. Robert Mitchum at his best.
5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful comedy classic
Blake Edwards' THE PINK PANTHER has held up well over the years. It is, of course, the start of one of the funniest and most popular comedy series of all time. However, while the subsequent films focus on the antics of bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers), Clouseau is almost a supporting character in this film. Most of the focus is placed on Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven), an irresistible middle-aged bachelor who is secretly "The Phantom", a world-famous jewel thief. He decides to steal the Pink Panther diamond, the most valuable jewel in all the world.

    Editorial Review

This wrong-headed adaptation of the very funny (and scatological) novel by T. Coraghessan Boyle was written and directed by Alan Parker, who doesn't seem to have much of a clue. It's not a botch, just a movie that hammers its efforts at humor too hard. The focus is split between three story lines: the life of cereal tycoon John Kellogg (Anthony Hopkins with buck teeth), who has created a health spa for the wealthy that focuses on regular cleansing of the digestive tract (as well as applications of electricity); the troubles of an unhappy young couple (Matthew Broderick and Bridget Fonda), who come to the spa hoping to cure their marital ills (Broderick gets the worst of the deal); and the efforts of a young hustler (John Cusack), who is trying to break into the breakfast-cereal business but gets taken by an even bigger hustler (Michael Lerner). There are subplots about Kellogg's children but they add little. For all the doo-doo and enema jokes, the joys of this movie are distinctly scattered.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Kooky Victorians
This is a genuinely odd picture, with a number of peculiar characters, all involved, in one way or another in the natural health movement at the turn of the 20th Century.I thought that Anthony Hopkins was wonderful as Dr. John Kellogg - what a fabulous accent and set of false teeth - I've never laughed at anything Hopkins did before, but this definitely made me laugh.
1-0 out of 5 stars BEWARE - FULL SCREEN - Rating the FORMAT not the MOVIE
Any of the reviews here from people who rated the MOVIE as 5 STARS I COMPLETELY agree with... HOWEVER, I bought and RETURNED this dvd because it was FULL SCREEN.There is NO WAY that this format or version, or whatever you want to call it can be justified in this day and age.WIDESCREEN or LETTERBOX are the ONLY WAY TO GO.And for those who like full screen (why?????) great, but Amazon should at least offer the WIDESCREEN for those of us who ONLY ENJOY THAT FORMAT.
1-0 out of 5 stars HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Remember that song in the film? Very catchy. I love this film. It's well cast, filmed and acted. But I'm giving this dvd only 1 star for these reasons: #1 - it is NOT presented in widescreen (it was filmed in 1.85:1). #2 - the HORRIBLE dvd box art, which looks like a bootleg edition you'd snag off the streets with the cheap looking design and ugly title font. #3 - ZERO EXTRAS and for THAT price?!?!. It's an outrage. This is a horrible edition. Lucky for me I have the laserdisc which IS in widescreen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Black Comedy with a Punch
Welcome to Woop Woop amounts to a farce with a very unique (and appalling) storyline. The town Woop Woop is literally "off the map" and its inhabitants interact in a surreal and disturbing fashion.5-0 out of 5 stars "Cracked out and fablous"
I turned the T.V. on @ 6:30 a.m. & was hooked there and then. This movie actually made me ask myself, "Am I really awake"? I was laughing until my stomach hurt. Was I awake? Yes, & "Woop Woop" came to life!5-0 out of 5 stars I have been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD
Please add this one to your collection. It is cheerful adn delightful. I have watched it at least 10 times and I will watch it over and over again. It makes me laugh every time. Love the Australian accent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good as ever
I fell in love with this movie the first time I saw it and it one of the few I am willing to watch again only to enjoy it just as much each time following. It is one I can actally share with my grandparents.

5-0 out of 5 stars Film review
This film is very well made with great story, picturization, and hundreds of scenes to laugh. Moreover, this film also demonstrates the importance of brotherhood and purity in human life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Lucky Sods
This is one movie that you do not want to dive into the detail as it is fun to be surprised as it unfolds. Basically it looks as though some lucky sod in the village has won the lottery. The trick is to find out who it was. Then if found what chain of circumstances will it trigger.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would double the number of stars if I could.
I saw this movie when it first opened and had to go back to see it again because the laughter in the theater was so loud and so pervasive that I missed some of the dialog.
5-0 out of 5 stars Just like the Romans
I saw this movie when I was a student of Latin literature and thought it captured the spirt of Plautus's plays brilliantly.Later, I saw a stage prodction which I liked as well. But no one can replace Zero Mostel. He is one of the most naturally funny men in the world. This is vulgar and bawdy and even corny at times but it is lots of fun.It is one of my favourite comedy movies of all time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Miss the Sondheim score; Hate the slapstick
Richard Lester, who was popular at the time for his Beatles film "Hard Days Night," obviously had no affection for the musical theater. The score, which is one of Sondheim's funniest, is eviscerated.Only a few tunes remain, and those sound overproduced and canned.

    Editorial Review

Liz and Dick (a.k.a. Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton) almost seemed to be importing the psychodramas of their marriage into this 1967 film (of course, the same was true of every film they made together). Adapted from Shakespeare's play and directed by Franco Zeffirelli (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only Love Tames the Shrew ....
Turbulent star-crossed lovers Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were the leads in this 1967 take on Taming of the Shrew. Taylor gives a fiesty performance as the one who won't be taken ... who cannot seem to give (to quote Bette Midler's The Rose) ... while Burton's ravishing maestro of a character is the (finally) successful shrew tamer. Comedy that tells us why only love can tame a shrew ...but for how long?

    5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Burton/Taylor
I first saw this movie, as a child, and I just had to add it to my collection.Burton/Taylor are so perfectly cast in their roles, I really can not imagine other actors in those parts.I think a young Michael York does a good job with his small part, too.
