5-0 out of 5 stars World War Three
This is the best boxing match in history. No one is clear precisely what drove Ali and Frazier to take each other to hell again and again, but watching this reminds you that Frazier had the worst attitude an opponent can have:"I refuse to lose".It doesn't matter how many times Frazier gets his mouthpiece knocked out, nor does it matter to him when Ali starts opening up his face like a can of tomatoes. He absolutely refuses to give up.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ali-Frazier Fight for Pride and the Heavyweight Title
October 1st, 1975, Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier meet in Manilla for their third epic battle.NBC Sports put together this special program for its "Greatest Bouts of All-Time" Series, which originally aired in the early 1990's.Hosted by Marv Alpert and the "Fight Doctor" Ferdie Pachecho, the two review the bout round by round with commentary from Frazier, Angelo Dundee, Eddie Futch, and the referee Carlos Padilla. It is very well done, with a good introduction to the fight, the controversy that surrounded it, Frazier's personal hatred of Ali, and of course the exciting bout itself.
5-0 out of 5 stars World War 3
A fight full of drama, high tempratures, non-stop action, blood, mouthpieces flying around the ring AND OUTSIDE, emotions, courage...and da power of da heartz of men.. this was an all-out WAR. The best heavyweight clash ul ever see.. no heavyweight in these days can put together a fight like these two men on that hot gruesome day.. Ali showed speed, accuracy, aggression, brains, courage, an outstanding chin and all round great athletisicm, frazier.. a TANk with No Reverse Gear..constantly coming forward.. every man giving everything they had up till the last round of the fight. like i said..no heavyweight has ever come close to showing bravery courage and absolute physical strength as these two men..on that hot day..in the philiipines. its a must see! hardcore boxing fan..rocky fan even..or a sports fan..or even to witness the power given to these to men by the almighty god.. its 10* not 5...

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for boxing fans
I gifted this to my dad, who is a boxing fan.He absolutely loved it. 6 hours of great boxing.I would recommend this to anyone who like boxing or ALI or both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
This three-disc documentary about the career of Muhammad Ali is amazing, worth more than 100 miscast biopics put together. It tells the whole story, from his youth to his gold medal to his ascension to the championship to his exile from the sport and right through to the end of his fighting days and his later-life bout with Parkinson's. It works for fans of Ali, obviously, but it also works if you want a general primer on boxing history or even an overview of the social, cultural, and political tumult of the 60's. Love him or hate him, the man is an icon, and this has all the footage and all the interviews with all the people who know and were there. An absolute must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest documentary about Muhammad Ali of all time
When you pose with Muhammad Ali for photographs what he likes to do is have you make a fist and put it up against the side of the face while he assumes a boxing pose, so you look like you are landing a heavy blow against the only man ever to win the heavyweight boxing title three times. However, when it was my turn to pose there was no way on earth I was going to pretend I was beating up on the Champ, so I just wanted to shake hands. This gave Ali a chance to give me bunny ears.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent video
I feel as a Marciano fan this is a great tape. Yes I would have liked to have seen the fights in their complete form, but this is good enough for me. I would like to let the person know that is looking for footage of the marciano-Ali super fight, U can get the dvd at best buy, or tower records, or if u want U can order it on-line.

5-0 out of 5 stars He was great
Ok, for all of you people claiming he only fought old boxers, you are wrong. Ok, he had three fights that people critisize him for: Joe Louis, Walcott and Moore. He had to fight Louis because both were looking at a title shot. Marciano almost refused to fight him, as Louis was Marciano's mentor. Walcott was obvious. You can't do much without beating the champion, and Moore campaigned for the Marciano bout. All fighters beat older boxers. Ali fought Archie Moore...he was 19 years younger than him. Ali was 10 years younger than Liston. All fighters have to figt older fighters, otherwise they would seperate weight class as well as age. marciano had incredible punching power, heart and stamina. For those of you who claim he isnt good, you know little about boxing. This video was great, truly showing off Marciano's incredible punching power. Truly, a quality movie if you are a Marciano fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good fight footage and interesting interviews
Some of the other videos in the Boxing's Best series are flawed bynot enough fight footage, too much time spent on uninteresting interviews, and not enough insight into the lives of the subjects. This one, though, is a somewhat different story. Although just under an hour long, you get some good footage of several bouts that led up to, and including, his dramatic knockout of Jersey Joe Walcott to gain the title, some footage of every one of his title defenses, and interviews with family members and others who knew him, who give some insight into his character and personality. This documentary reveals him to have been a truly modest and decent man. In the ring, despite a height and reach disadvantage against most of his opponents, he had a powerful punch in either hand, good boxing skills, and an iron will. He just refused to lose. A fairly good documentary on one of the greatest heavyweights ever. Hopefully a better documentary about him will emerge at some point, but until then, this one is good for its price. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Decades ago, documentary filmmaker Leon Gast attempted to complete a feature about the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" championship bout between boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire. Sundry complications, though, held up the project until its release in 1996. It was well worth the delay. From Gast's perspective of modern history, the six weeks Ali and Foreman were forced to spend waiting in Africa for their fight to take place now looks like an important moment in America's cultural understanding of African American roots. In a nutshell, Ali had been stripped of his heavyweight champion title because his opposition to the Vietnam War-era draft had landed him in prison. Reigning champ Foreman agreed to a Don King-promoted match in Kinshasa, but after all parties got there the fight was put off. Gast captures the charismatic Ali, in the ensuing days and weeks, going out among the people and getting to know them while the more reclusive Foreman keeps to his own company. Meanwhile, King brings over black American artists such as James Brown and the Spinners to mix it up with African musicians. The sense of excitement and connection is thrilling, as is the boxing footage of Foreman and Ali finally taking swings at one another in a titanic duel. Writers George Plimpton and Norman Mailer, each of whom was covering the fight as journalists, are on hand to recollect the details. Whether you're a fight fan or not, this is a unique experience and a fascinating insight into America's sense of identity. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A LITTLE LESS OF NORMAN MAILER AND MORE OF BB KING WOULD GO A LONG WAY
but the final shot of Mr. Ali standing and restraining himself from throwing one more punch, but letting George fall gracefully flat to the ground is ballet, is pure art, the crowning of his showmanship, after so many rounds of Mr. Ali receiving George's hardest body blows, tiring George out.
5-0 out of 5 stars As If You Were At The Rumble
Filmmaker Leon Gast attempted to do the impossible in 1974; chronicle the build-up to the highly-anticipated "Rumble in the Jungle" heavyweight title clash in Kinshasa, Zaire, between champion George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, the fight itself and the aftermath.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Boxer Fans

5-0 out of 5 stars NBC Special on Ali-Foreman is Tops!
In the early 1990's NBC sports produced its Greatest Fights of All-Time series that aired on Saturday mornings.Hosted by Marv Albert and the fight doctor Ferdie Pachecho, this series was a huge success for NBC, and due to its quality production, its central character of Muhammad Ali, and is a must for all boxing fans.
5-0 out of 5 stars ALI at his brightest moment!
The first boxing matches I ever saw were related to Muhammad Ali, so I grew up admiring him. The combination of skills and personality were unique, and still remain as the reflex of a person larger than life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Zaire
I haved loved Ali from the beginning. From Liston thru all of the others. When the fight came up with Forman in Zaire, everyone I knew said Ali would lose. I beleived... and guess what, he won.It blew my mind.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not accurate, and just average
I'm a big Marciano fan and cant wait for a realistic movie to come out about him, unfortunately this was not it. If your not familiar with Marciano you may like this simply as a decent piece of filmmaking, but if your looking for an accurate account of the real man, this isnt even close. The cast is okay (penelope miller, and john favreau, among others), but the writing is second rate and as I said, not at all true to the real life story of this great champion. Most egregious was the personality portrayal, a cockiness and even arrogance that was the complete opposite to the humble and soft spoken demeanor of the real Rocky. I dont understand why they didnt consult the family members for guidance because Rockys real life was certainly fascinating, and does not need to be exagerrated to provide interest. As others pointed out there were also events that just never happenned (visiting Louis in a hospital) . Besides the historical inaccuracies this movie really was just average in terms of entertainment. Someday I hope to see a better account that this great hero deserves.James Cameron, Ron Howard are you listening?

3-0 out of 5 stars a different kind of boxing movie
Boxing films:We've seen it all before...it's Rocky Balboa, over and over again. Here's a breath of fresh air- a true story about a real champion. Jon Favreau is terrific as Rocky Marciano, who seemed to be a really nice guy who took care of his friends and family. I watched this film not knowing anything about Rocky Marciano other than the fact that he was a boxer, and this film did a good job at educating me, without ever being sappy or boring.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good, solid biopic.
When I first saw this movie on "Showtime", I didn't think I was gonna be impressed. After all, up to that point I had only seen Jon Favreau in "Rudy" and "Swingers". I couldn't reconcile the guy who played those somewhat neurotic characters with Rocky Marciano, at least not in my head. So it was a pleasant surprise when I watched the movie... Jon Favreau did a great job playing the undefeated champ, Rocky Marciano. I don't know how he did it, but his body looked liked a chiseled heavyweight's!

5-0 out of 5 stars "Champions Forever" Documents the Best FiveBoxers of the 60's and 70's - Tops!
"Champions Forever" may be the best boxing documentary of all time.Exquisitely done, it features the five greatest heavyweight boxers of the 1960's and 1970's.The story focuses primarily on M. Ali, beginning with his huge upset victory over the sullen and powerfully intimidating Sonny Liston, and then proceeds to document the rise of Joe Frazier, George Foreman, Kenny Norton, and finally Larry Holmes. While the story seems to revolve around the rise and eventual fall of M. Ali, the other four greats are featured in their biggest fights as well. There are interviews with all five men, and they bring timely commentary to their lives and fights that is both enlightening and informative.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great documentary
I don't know if this film had a theatrical release or not but if it did and it wasn't at least nominated by the Academy for Best Documentary of the Year as far as I'm concerned the makers of this film were robbed.

4-0 out of 5 stars IF YOU'RE A JOE LOUIS FAN, YOU'LL LIKE THIS VIDEO.
This video contains exciting knock-out scenes from many of Joe's memorablefights, and it brings back the thrill of watching the greatest of allheavyweight champions at the peak of his fighting prowess. My onlycriticisms are, it didn't show enough of the fights that it featured, andit should have featured more of Joe's fights. In other words, I wouldgladly have paid twice the price for a video that covered Joe Louis' careerin greater depth. Nevertheless, it is well worth the money, and it belongsin the video library of every Joe Louis fan.

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent bio, but should have been longer
This is a decent bio of Joe Louis, but it only scratches the surface of profiling the "Brown Bomber's" career.Too many great fights are not even shown, such as the Primo Carnera bout, and the clips that areshown are way too brief. For example, they show about 25 seconds of thefirst round of Louis-Braddock.Yet the producers of the show fail toinclude the moment when Louis is unexpectedly knocked down! This video hassome memorable fight clips and interviews (such as Tony Galento whiningafter his loss to Louis), but it always leaves me wanting to see more. Billy Conn is one of the hosts of this special, and while he was a greatfighter and person, he wasn't a good commentator.Still, for $10 bucks Iguess you can't expect too much.

3-0 out of 5 stars An interesting biography, but it could have been better
As an amateur boxing historian, I love watching old films of legends like Jack Dempsey. For that reason I find the HBO series "Boxing's Best" very interesting to watch, because it has plenty of unique clipsof these legends. However, my biggest complaint is that the series doesnot show enough fight clips. In my opinion, too much time is spent withhost Barry Tompkins and his special guests.I'd rather see more ofDempsey's classic bouts than listening to some sportswriter's memories. This is especially true since each episode of "Boxing's Best"only lasts about 55 minutes. However, since videos of Dempsey, Johnson andLouis are almost impossible to find anywhere else, I guess you have to besomewhat grateful to the producers for releasing this series to home video.

Kinshasa, Zaire was to be the site of one of the most-anticipated boxing matches in history.
