this movie was alright. too much of a blaxploitataion film, but otherwise ok. why didnt anyone catch him tho?

What?
That word was how i felt after i watched this.A lot was left out as far as the plot was concerned.It was somewhat interesting but i expected more.Overall it just didn't do it for me.But once again, if you are a collector i suggest you purchase it, Otherwise sit back and read a book.

ABAR is the baddest brotha' in cinematic history!
Despite the rediculously inaccurate box-art, this is an excellent, excellent party film.The title "In Your Face" exists only on the box and video itself, for when you pop it into the VCRyou are immediately greeted with the true title, "ABAR".Grin with glee as our hero, ABAR, sticks it to the suckas who are trying to run a black doctor out of a white neighborhood.There's an excellent "ABAR jump-kicks a dude" scene that you'll have to watch for.The story heats up to a fever pitch, when, after all other ideas are exhausted, the doctor decides to use his rabbit-juice to convert ABAR into an INDESTRUCTIBLE EBONY SUPERMAN!It has to be seen to be believed!Get your buddies in a room with a TV, and have an ABAR party tonight! ... reviewing brentweood home video version
I have to agree with the past reviewer that the scenes they cut out would have made it a watchable movie.All that I was left with was Jim Kelly beating up other grown men AND midgets.The final fight against the strong guy was the most trouble I had paying attention to a movie in a long time.I do have to say that Kelly did have acting ability, just don't expect for it to get showcased in this movie.
NEVER The White Knight, Baby...
This is an excellent Kung-Fu classic from the 70's that has unfortunately been neutered by the ridiculous (and unexplained) editing of Brentwood Home Video.Look for the VHS copy made by Continental Video in the 80's & 90's.The Continental video has all the cut nudity, cursing and explicit violence that movie goers in the 70's would have seen.Don't buy this jive-turkey by Brentwood unless you are desperate to see the movie.Instead, search around for the Continental copy.You won't be disappointed.On to the review...

A Blessing for Rudy Ray Fans
Personally, I don't think there's anything quite as compelling as a good documentary, and this is a really good documentary.I've been a Dolemite fan for ages, but I knew nothing about Rudy Ray's career before the '70s, like when he first introduced the Dolemite character, or that fifty years ago he was known as R&B singer Prince Dumar. Rudy!You got my money!

Cinematic Masterpiece
Eschewing conventional acting methodology, Rudy Ray Moore inhabits Dolemite with an unparalleled ferocity.His signature line, "I'm Dolemite, Mutha(expletive)" is delivered time and time again in a drunken slur: a brutal, but anguished, plea for sanity.To the untrained eye, it might seem like Dolemite's karate kicks are not even connecting with his foes, but this is a metaphor for the never ending conundrum of the pimp/poet/warrior.Watch for the symbolism inherent in the furry hat and pay close attention to the pants that come up to his armpits as both are integral to understanding the magnificence that is Dolemite.

I recently had the pleasure of watching a film starring the Hunkiest specimen of Man-meat ever to grace the silver screen. It was Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite. Let me start off by saying this is quite possibly the finest film ever made. Dolemite himself is a man so baaad that he doesn't even feel the need to be in good shape to impress us, he let's his martial arts do the talkin'. If Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Tony Jaa were all combined into one glorious person they would still aspire to be Dolemite. To the untrained eye it would appear that Dolemite is not actually hitting people in the fight scenes. In reality he is just so fast that he can snap his hands and feet there and back so quickly that it gives the viewer the illusion that his foot is six inches away from the targets head.

I have to tap into my memory banks to recall a more repulsive film.I came up with "I Spit On Your Grave".Director-star Melvin Van Peebles has the audacity to pawn off his nihilistic fantasies as wish fullfilment for the black population as a whole.There were a lot of artistic triumphs to emerge from so-called "black expoitation" genre and this is not one of them.This collage of violently misogynistic images can be attributed to the auteur himself.The film starts with Van Peebles exploiting his son Mario by showing the adolescent servicing a prostitute.The film goes downward from there.Van Peebles directorial style is hackneyed and the acting is amateur hour.Don't be fooled into thinking this is some sort of landmark film.It's unadulterated [...]

Made for a pittance, initially released in just two theaters, ultimately grossing over ten million dollars, "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" became the progenitor of the "Blaxploitation" film craze of the seventies. Considered a seminal film in African-American cinema, Director Van Peebles feels it influenced the independent film movement as a whole. Its jazzy editing and strong hero set it miles apart from the standard fare - one can see how African-American audiences could see this film as a long-overdue cinematic thunderbolt.

SWEETBACK WAS THE ORIGINATOR OF THE BLAXPLOITATION GENRE!!Look!Lets be real, Sweetback wasn't that great a movie.However it spawned a movement of Black cinema.How are you going to like films like Coffy and Shaft if you aren't going to acknowledge the movie that started it all.Before Sweetback we had only one star, Poitier. Poitier was fading because the new generation didn't think he was militant enough. To us Poitier was the good negro, a Uncle Tom.We needed a film that would represent the times. YES!! Police brutality was happening. It wasn't something that was made up. YES!!! the new generation was different from previous generation and we was fed up with the system. Im gonna get you laughin
Rarely will will you find a movie with this many laughs from beginning to end. The cast is amazing from Issic Hayes to Bernie Casey and the laughs and the sight gags just keep on comming. I compare the humor in this movie to the likes of Airplane and Police squad it,s that funny. Like all super hero movies this has a moral and a message which is even funnier that the plot.I would highly recomend this movie to any one who needs some serious laughs.It,s rared R for a reason mainly the language but that is part of the movies charm. The language does not really offend it just is.

How did he go to the bathroom with all that stuff on???
The best way to sum up this film is by saying that this is one of the funniest movies I have seen. This film ranks right up there with Airplane and Blazing Saddles. And by that I mean that after watching this film you will find yourself quoting lines from this film for years to come. I first saw this film over 15 years ago and to this day I still find it hilarious. Even though I have seen it many times and I know all the jokes I still laugh at them. This film is that funny. This is the Wayans Bros. back when they first got started and were at there best. This film is a parody of every blaxploitation film ever made. And it is funny picking out refernces to the different films. Also keep an eye out for cameos from various actors. And always pay attention to things that are happening in the background. 15+ years later and I am still finding things happening in the background that I missed before. So order this film sit back and be prepared to laugh so hard that you cry.

Great Movie but disappointing DVD package
One of the funniest I've ever seen. One of the funniest movies of the 80's. But the DVD quality is horrible. Since its not an anamorphic transfer the quality is grainy. The DVD only has 3 gigs of data so that means the movie was compressed. You would think a greatly written and acted movie would have a commentary and extras features. Not on this!! NOT AS GOOD AS THE FIRST - BUT STILL FUN
I miss Ron O'Neil. He was Superfly. In this one we get Nathan Purdee who does extremely well with what he's given but it's just not the same as having Ron in the role. But Purdee is cool and does his best to make this a decent flick and I appreciate that.
Awful Sequel
This movie is so bad that is not fun. Boring, awful direction, amateurish acting, the plot doesn't make sense. If you thought that SUPERFLY T.N.T. was bad this is worst ( Priest working for the cops to capture the big drug dealers? Give me a break!). Go back and watch the original SUPERFLY which is the one,I am sure, that the guy that gave this one five stars was thinking of. Avoid this one, you have been warned!

Freddie Gibbs is Back ! ! !
This was the infinitely more popular sequal to BLACK CAESAR (American International Films and Blaxploitation's answer to THE GODFATHER.)In truth, BLACK CAESAR is really where the story is at... but HELL UP IN HARLEM is a lot more visually exciting in terms of costumes and action.Basically it takes up where CAESAR ended finding every loose string it could, and using them for HK style movie cut fast paced action and chase scenes.As for the soundtrack... you can get it on CD now(!) CEASAR's soundtrack was by JB - - but I think Edwin Starr actually gave him a good run for his money capturing all that Starsky and Hutch meets SPEED type action...
Pathetic piece of trash...I'd rather see Amos and Andy or Beulah.
I mean this stuff was horrible. The minute the man put the gun up to the little boy's temple, I was out of this picture and I mean way out. That kind of stuff should have been edited out of this pic. And speaking of the editing, this picture was edited to not make sense by having certain scenes that have nothing to do with the premise of the film to sadly become a part of this abysmal movie.On the dvd's special feature as to how the film was made, the director, Mr. Cohen stated that the editor doesn't include this picture on his resume and rightfully so. This picture was a disgrace to filmmaking in general and ought to be shown to NYU film students as to how you should not make a movie.

Hell Up In Harlem w/Fred "The Hammer" Williamson and directed by the one and only, Larry Cohen!If that alone doesn't make you hit the purchase button, then the hell with ya.Harlem continues pretty much immediately after Black Caesar left off.The very last scene in Caesar is changed a bit-he's no longer beaten by a mob-in order to continue the story.Tommy still has the list of corrupt officials, and naturally the corrupt officials still want the thing.Tommy's dad, a minor character in the first film, is now a major player as he goes through a big change from humble old guy to big city crime boss.Tommy's ex is still hanging around, but she's pretty much treated like a doormat the entire time, and Tommy only seems to care once she's already dead.He finds a new spouse though, a religious chick who seems to jump in the sack with Tommy a little too easily(not that much different from real life I suppose).Tommy tries to leave his crime life behind, but do you think that actually works?Once a traitorous schmuck takes over Tommy's old territory, kills his dad and attempts to kill Tommy, well there's hell to pay.Hell Up In Harlem, that is!Tommy goes into Rambo mode in the last half hour of the film.This sequel is more action oriented than Black Caesar.Caesar, like Scarface, was more of a crime drama about how a small time crook makes it big.Harlem is more focused on the butt kickin', and The Hammer has no problem dishing it out.Good times. ... What can I say, I'm bias, why... not because this was another of those "black" films everyone thought should be made but because I actually had a small bit part in it.Yep, stood out there in the cold of Platte City (MO), with about 16 other extras. Saw the open call for extras on the bulletin board at school and answered the call. Hey, no money, no true fame, but at least my segment didn't get tossed to the cutting room floor and it was fun "being in a movie"

A tough, gritty blaxploitation classic not to be missed
Black Caesar (1973) is one heck of a good movie.I hate the term blaxploitation that is used to describe movies of this genre because it implies that these sorts of films are somehow second-class entries in the world of cinema.Black Caesar is a first-class ride from start to finish, taking as much from classic gangster films of the 1930s and 1940s as it does from earlier blaxploitation films such as Shaft.Larry Cohen gave us a tough, mean, dirty, gritty film that tells it and shows it like it is: plenty of cursing, gunplay, blood, profanity, nudity, and racism.I have heard that the starring role was originally written for Sammy Davis, Jr.Nobody loved Sammy more than I do, but there's just no way he could have done the things that Tommy Gibbs does effectively.A lot of people deride the acting skills of Fred Williamson, which makes no sense to me; the man is just fantastic in this film.

Surprisingly Good Action Film From the Chef in "South Park"
Issac Hayes carrying the whole weight of an action film alone?A film starring HIM???At first I thought it's ridiculous.Well, he is a great singer, but ....Then I watched this film, and twice, and am convinced.He should do that more!!Yes, I acknowledge he cannot act like DeNiro or Pacino, and the story of his love interest is as convincing as love between Josh, Ben, and Kate in "Pearl Harbor."But given a right material like this, his towering physical presence makes up for anything single-handedly. Here's a screenplay that should be studied in film school.Seriously.It starts out with a bang and holds your interest for a slammin' first act.Then, just when you're sayin' to yourself, "OK, this is fun, but where the hell is it going?" the movie makes a 180-degree turn at the 30-minute mark and totally peels out into something you've never seen before.One of the few instances where 3 writers on an action movie is actually a GOOD thing (especially since one of them is Michael Allin, who wrote ENTER THE DRAGON, and another is Oscar Williams, who gave us THE FINAL COMEDOWN and BLACK BELT JONES).Brilliantly directed by Jonathan Kaplan.Solid supporting performances from Alan Weeks, Nichelle Nichols, Dick Miller, Stan Shaw, Stymie Beard from the Little Rascals, and especially Sam Laws, who always turns up as a character named "Dinwiddie" in Kaplan's early films (see also THE STUDENT TEACHERS, THE SLAMS, and WHITE LINE FEVER).Special mention should also go to Yaphet Kotto, who one year earlier had claimed that his role in LIVE AND LET DIE was racist, but apparently thought nothing of collecting a paycheck here by playing a murderous pimp (or, even worse, two years later in DRUM, where he portrayed a slave who is stripped nude, hung upside down, and asswhipped to a bloody pulp).Also, you gotta love any movie featuring an Italian hitman named "Joe Dante" (Kaplan and future GREMLINS director Joe Dante were both working for Roger Corman at the time this movie was produced.I think WHITE LINE FEVER also features a character named Joe Dante).Last but not least, the score by Isaac Hayes is amazing.If you can find the double-CD (paired with his equally great THREE TOUGH GUYS soundtrack), grab it!I play it all the time, and it's always being sampled by hip hop performers.Definitely check this sucker out.

This movie took me back to my younger days. It was packed with action, with a deep message. I really injoyed the movie and I watch it all the time.

enjoyable '70s black cinema
This is a very funny and enjoyable movie.It's definitely worth seeing if you're a fan of black movies from the '70s.Bernie Casey and Rosalind Cash are both good as usual, but Marie O'Henry is really the one to see in this one.She's probably best known for her one line from "Uptown Saturday Night".In the robbery scene where everyone is told to strip down to their underwear, she's the lady who said "I don't wear underwear".What we didn't get to see in that movie is shown in "Dr. Black and Mr. Hyde", which is enough to make this movie worthwhile! She also starred in a movie from 1975 called "Deliver Us From Evil" which was apparently never released on video.Overall, this movie is worth having in your collection if you're seriously into blaxploitation.

Even as a fan of blaxploitation, this movie is about the worst that I have ever seen...period. Bernie Casey's performance is not bad, but you may have problems getting past his creepy appearance. Only for hard core camp fans only.

Sa da tay! Pootie Tang is O-Kay
"Pootie Tang" is the ultimate guilty pleasure film. Sometimes I ask myself, "Why do I laugh at this?" I don't know why, but it's crazy. Chris Rock has done well on this movie. I don't know how you come up with a story about a funny talking super hero. Throughout the whole movie, this guy is saying a thing that doesn't make any sense, but the characters surrounding him all understand. How do you come up something like that?!? And put it into a feature film!!! One liners like "sa da tay" and "sine your pity on the runny kine", are classics.

One thing i have to say, is that this movie is completely stupid.Everything about it is just insane, and uncomprehendable, but you know what?Thats why i LOVE IT.I can always rely on this movie when i want to watch something that has a complete taste for stupidity.
Modern Day Minstrel Show
Pootie Tang is one of the most steryotypical minstrel movies in existance. Pootie tang, the main character, speaks in ebonics (he's too dumb to speak English, apparently) and he fights using a stupid magical belt. His great rap song that has no words or music, just silence, is almost the director saying that black people will listen to anything and call it music.
