5-0 out of 5 stars * * * * * for the film, cut is butchered...
First, I have to point out like one of the other reviewers, the company that released it has BUTCHERED the cut, scenes are put together out of order, stuff missing, etc.Its almost to the point of ruining the film... Unfortunately, the video edition is so hard to find you might have to settle for it anyway... and still the scenes are great, but the cut will make the film feel far choppier than it actually was - - Ashame because I actually like this one more than Dolemite. The opening credits alone with the ULTRA FUNKY MUSIC and the cheap opening credits is hillarious...especially when we find out that Dolemite was so funky that he created his own form of Kung Fu that incorporated funky disco movies - - and when he wasn't practising Kung Fu he had some funky moves (and ladies) elsewhere. In fact, while arguably many of the ladies on his album covers could look pretty nasty at times, the chicks in this film are built for speed - - and well exhibited.Take the legendary "interrogation" scene with Mrs. Cavalette (when Dolemite ummmmmmmmm... questions her so hard, the hotel room starts collapsing from the ceiling...
3-0 out of 5 stars So Bad, It's Good.
If you're in need of some good laughs and are willing to overlook poor dialogue, an even worse plot and shoddy camera work, this is your movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Kung-Fu is worth the purchase price alone!!!
Don't believe the fools who doubt Rudy Ray Moore!!! How can people look at the Dolemite movies seriously? The opening credits are printed on his GIANT JAMES-BROWN-STYLE CAPE!! You'll never enjoy the sensory overload and outright absurdity of these movies if you try to THINK about them. Just have a six-pack and a few smart-mouthed friends around when you watch it. 4-0 out of 5 stars Thank youPam for aBlaxploitation classic!
Maxim magazine lists Coffy as number 7 on its list of the 50 best B-movies of all time, and there can clearly be no mistake about its status as a B-movie. Pam Grier shines in this hilarious action-packed blaxploitation flick where she first got her name as a 'black pin-up queen' during the early 70's. It is apparent after watching this film that no one remembers this for the bad-acting and dialogue, but for Pam Grier herself she is one mean sister.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Movie...
This is probably my all-time favorite film, and I think it's because everything seems to work right: the atmosphere, the music(especially the title song "Coffy" with the classic refrain "Coffy is the color/Of her skin"), the gags, the actors, Pam Grier, everything. I especially like director Hill's choice to film some of the sleeziest parts of Los Angeles in order to tell the story; we see Watts, downtown, Malibu.
5-0 out of 5 stars PAM GRIER IS FABULOUS!!!! A GODDESS!!!!
This, together with "Foxy Brown", are my two favorite Pam Grier films. Pam Grier kicked butt on both films. Not only she is a great actress, she was and still today IS a total sex goddess!!!!"Coffy" always gets me in the end. After all these men used her, and abused her, after she gets her revenge, kills them all, and at the final scene, the picture of Pam walking alone at the beach, and the song, always gets me. There are times in our lives that in one way or another, we go thru that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Foxy Brown Rocks!
This is a great 70's movie! Pam Grier looks beautiful and plays this tough girl part perfect. I love the music and Intro to this film along with the cool clothes! This is a fun movie to watch lots of laughs. I loved it when Foxy pulled the gun out of her Afro, she is too cool! She is like Charlies Angels and Police Woman, Girl Power!

4-0 out of 5 stars Grier is outstanding in this crime thriller
"That's my sister, baby--and she's a whole lotta woman!" That's how one character sums up the title character in "Foxy Brown," a crime thriller written and directed by Jack Hill. Pam Grier plays the title character, whom the title song promises is "super bad."2-0 out of 5 stars Hardly a Great Film, But Enjoyable and Action-Packed
With better direction and acting, I think *Foxy Brown* could have been an awesome film. As it stands, it's pretty much just a decent plot filled with distractions caused by a parade of terrible acting and outrageous '70s fashion (the latter of which, however, is really almost reason enough to see the film).Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny!
No, this film isn't meant to be funny. But it is anyway!Rudy Ray Moore is "The Avenging Disco Godfather", a heroic...D.J.?Very odd, and quite weird as well. The story centers around drugs (go figure), and the young people who get high have weird visions about...basketball (see, I told you it was weird).
2-0 out of 5 stars Laughed so hard, made my side hurt.............
Man,lemme tell you. This movie is funny WITHOUT a beer. If you're expecting a high quality Soul Cinema picture, with somewhat decent resolution level & clarity ( i.e. Willie Dynamite, Shaft, etc ) this ain't it. The lighting in this movie is terrible ! LOL !!! The dialogue is muffled, the editing sucks and the acting is incredibly hilarious ( though it wasn't meant to be ). Like some of the other reviews attested, this mug is funny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Blaxploitation meets Sci-Fi
This movie is the pinnacle of Blaxploitation films. The lead character is a black man who is wrongfully imprisoned and then cruelly experimented on in jail. When he gets out, he has a unique Pinnochio-esque talent. But, it's not his nose that grows...think lower and longer (ha, ha).I could not stop laughing as he killed his enemies with his "secret weapon".This movie is not meant to be taken serious, but it accomplishes something the other Blaxploitation films of this time did not...a truly unique storyline.

4-0 out of 5 stars Whuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh ?
All the reviewers over here are spot on... This is one film that has to be seen to be believed. Disjointed narrative is an understatement... You get the sense the film was made on the go and when the director realized it was going nowhere came up with a really clever little plot twist... Anton Checkov once wrote a great dramatic rule :If there's a gun in the first act, it is bound to go off in the second. And in this film, if there's a severed member in the first part its bound to... well I hope this isn't a spoiler... grow back and murder people in the second. - - A great idea for Camp sci-fi, but actually the film is mostly standard fair urban action, though a bit sleazer than many of its more famous counterparts....and you have to sit through 90 minutes of classic BAD (yet charming, engaging and funky) blacksploitation until the big scene.... and when it finally happens you're like, "Whuhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh the ???"A killer p*nis ??? My gosh, what would SHAFT have to say to that ?
3-0 out of 5 stars Good blaxploitation flix Not one for the kids
Brutally beaten and arrested on false charges, Charlie has done his time and now he's out...for revenge. Standard blaxploitation fare made legendary by a scene involving Charlie's murderous member.

3-0 out of 5 stars Curtis Mayfield's soundtrack is the real star
I've been a fan of Superfly as soundtrack for years. Curtis Mayfield is the man, crooner, poet, and funkateer all put into one wise package. The lyrics of his songs for Superfly tell the story for me better than the plot itself at times.
5-0 out of 5 stars "He was no butler or clown"
This was a great movie because it showed a black man as something other than a clown or butler.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I know it's a rotten game, it's the only game 'The Man' left us to play"
I was born in the 70's but it was only recently (a couple of days ago) that I saw the film Superfly.A film about a drug dealer who wants to retire from the cocaine business because he sees its fatalism.I guess I must have bought into the negativity of those who condemned the film for it's perceived glorification of street life.In reality,I didn't even know what the film was about, I simply discounted it as just another blaxploitation that would be filled with over the top characters and bad acting. But Superfly was none of what I expected. It's social commentary speaks to the hopelessness of such a life style and if anything offers an anti-drug message. It also speaks to what society tells us to revere-money, homes, cars-the American Dream. Unfortunately, people could not see beyond the flashy clothes and the melodic musical score, which serves as the narrator, and controversy to capture the real message of the film.It is also unfortunate that the late Ron O'Neal's mesmerizing and brilliant performance as Priest was somewhat overshadowed by the film's controversy-namely, a drug dealer as hero. Ron O'Neal was a victim of what happens to most actors who have monumental success on a film-oftentimes they are typecast and then resigned to film and television roles that are beneath their talent and ability-it happens to the best of actors and the worst.Had he been an actor just starting out in present times, with his exotic, smoldering good looks and immense talent and intensity, he would have become world renown and Oscar nominated and perhaps an Oscar winner. He was definitely underrated and a man ahead of his time.

How does anyone rate this movie highly? Maybe it's a movie where you have to be a book nerd who liked the transation to film? All I know is NOTHING HAPPENS! Q: What is the plot? A. Who knows. If someone asks me what this movie was about - I say 'It's about NOTHING'. And not in a good Seinfeld way. Sad really. I think Tarantino tried to make a cool movie. 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent sequel to the dynamite first film--
Army veteran Slaughter's latest adventure doesn't take him to South America (incongruously referenced as Mexico here), but there's still plenty of trouble to be found in the U.S.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than "Slaughter"
A lot of people feel that the original "Slaughter" is the best one, but "Rip Off" is a much superior sequel. This is still a "revenge flick", but the characters are far more intersting. Jim Brown gets to have alot more fun and alot more sex. The added bonus is Dick Anthony Williams portrayal as a Pimp/Burgular who helps Slaughter bring down the Mob.The only downside to this one is that most of the songs from James Brown's classic soundtrack are missing from the movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Exciting: See the First "Slaughter" & Stella Instead
"Slaughter" may not be exactly a first-rate action film, but it still can be proud of its own energy and Stella Stevens. Its quickly-made sequel has none of them; instead, you got Ed McMahon as a villain.Oh no....Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Can You Dig It?
Shaft's Big Score is a decent sequel, but the pacing is a bit slow at times. You can't beat The Theme From Shaft, but Big Score has got some tight music in it, keepin' it funky for the Private Dick whose a brotha man. Bumpy and Willie, my two favorite characters are back, and Bumpy is still tolerating Shaft while Bumpy maintains his hilarious disrepecting of him. About midway through is one of coolest scenes ever-Shaft is getting worked over backstage at a nightclub by Mob goons while the shots cut back and forth between busted jaws and writhing exotic dancers. The whole scene is scored with a heavily funky tune about the fuzz comin' 'round and what you gonna do when the mace comes down. Obviously, then you gotta just disrespect the Man and check this movie out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Film!!!
Can you dig it!Gotta love the action in this one.Better than the first one!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars [3.5]--"Let's get down to some serious B&tt-kicking business."
I don't understand anyone who says that this is one of the worst exploitation films they have ever seen. Just the title alone gives this cult status and all the ingredients are here for it being an extremely fun film to watch. Yeah I'll admit that women's Prison flicks are terrible. They are all about getting girls naked. BAD action sequences & Horrible acting always plague these movies. They're usually made for teenagers who watch late night SKINemax. Black Mama White Mama on the other hand is fun. It doesn't take it self seriously. It even has drama that is topped off with a dramatic ending.

this isn't a bad movie the fight choreography is very 70's style but with a heavyness to it, its still a good movie

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the BRUCEPLOITATION movies
I saw this movie first time round back in 1983 and it was the first and best bruce lee imatation movie. As I come from the United Kingdom the version I saw came under the title THE TIGER STRIKES AGAIN(a.k.a. THE LAST STRIKE),and when it was re-released seven years later it was heavily cut (i.e. the nunchacku scenes, due to the stupid censorship laws in the uk,which are now more lenient,we were forbidden to see this amazing weapon in action.) so I decided buy it from amazon and boy was I glad I did so.It is really a simple plot involving freindship, love, betrayal, rape, murder and revenge but if you look beyond the awful dubbing and not so brilliant acting then you really can be pulled into it mainly because of of it's top notch martial arts coreography, which has to be li's finest hour.Okay I know he's no bruce Lee,and there will never be another Bruce Lee,but when it comes to seeing other imatations like Bruce Le,Dragon Lee,Bronson Lee and Bruce Liang he outshines them all and was a good martial arts performer in his own right. If your a hardcore kung fu fan and looking for a good leealike movie then your search has ended because this is the best of the BRUCEPLOITATION movies ever. You wont be disapointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Vile
I have to tap into my memory banks to recall a more repulsive film.I came up with "I Spit On Your Grave".Director-star Melvin Van Peebles has the audacity to pawn off his nihilistic fantasies as wish fullfilment for the black population as a whole. There were a lot of artistic triumphs to emerge from so-called "black expoitation" genre and this is not one of them. This collage of violently misogynistic images can be attributed to the auteur himself. The film starts with Van Peebles exploiting his son Mario by showing the adolescent servicing a prostitute. The film goes downward from there.Van Peebles directorial style is hackneyed and the acting is amateur hour.Don't be fooled into thinking this is some sort of landmark film. It's unadulterated [...]

2-0 out of 5 stars You Had To Be There
Made for a pittance, initially released in just two theaters, ultimately grossing over ten million dollars, "Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song" became the progenitor of the "Blaxploitation" film craze of the seventies. Considered a seminal film in African-American cinema, Director Van Peebles feels it influenced the independent film movement as a whole. Its jazzy editing and strong hero set it miles apart from the standard fare - one can see how African-American audiences could see this film as a long-overdue cinematic thunderbolt.
3-0 out of 5 stars skully
SWEETBACK WAS THE ORIGINATOR OF THE BLAXPLOITATION GENRE!!Look!Lets be real, Sweetback wasn't that great a movie. However it spawned a movement of Black cinema. How are you going to like films like Coffy and Shaft if you aren't going to acknowledge the movie that started it all. Before Sweetback we had only one star, Poitier. Poitier was fading because the new generation didn't think he was militant enough. To us Poitier was the good negro, a Uncle Tom.We needed a film that would represent the times. YES!! Police brutality was happening. It wasn't something that was made up. YES!!! the new generation was different from previous generation and we was fed up with the system. The film didn't have great cinematography, nor a great script, nor great direction, but it did speak for the millions of angry, youngminorities who felt they didn't have a voice.Whats worse we had some rich minorities who condemned the film but didn't have the guts to put the capital together to put out a better film that spoke to their people. So go ahead a write all the bad reviews that you want about Sweetback, butif it wasn't for Melvin Van Peebles you wouln't heard of Pam Grier (who we all love) and Richard Roundtree and Fred Williamson.Hollywood blackballed (yes this existalso) Melvin van Peebles, but used his formula to make millions of dollars. 1-0 out of 5 stars HORRIBLE.......JUST HORRIBLE..STAY AWAY FROM THIS....IT IS RIDICULOUS
Here we go. If you are considering purchasing this movie, then make your own decision for yourself, this is just my opinion here. This film is horrible. The first Superfly was wonderful, packed with an awesome soundtrack, and a good script for a black exploitation film. This thing here, this is where they just wasted American dollars. That is right, I believe money was completely wasted producing a film like this, and if you catch it on television any time soon, the channel is just trying to gain black viewership in a cheap manner. The film was so boring I couldn't watch anymore. Superfly, once the cool dealer from the city, is sitting on a horse saying "wooh now baby, get it togetha now get it togetha". Once you see that scene in the movie, if that does not annoy you then I don't know what will. "GET IT TOGETHA NOW" No the horse should throw run you into a tree branch, buddy. Ron O'neal was a great actor, but um, this film didn't do him any good. It was a massive flop in the 70s and is still horrible to watch. You know, I can't imagine anyone buying this film except someone who admires black exploitation films and thought this would follow up on the trend.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT SEQUEL WITH A SOLID SCRIPT
Ron O'Neal and Alex Haley did a fine job with this sequel and it's my favorite of the three Suerfly films. I've shared my love for this film and many people have told me that they didn't like the idea of Superfly not being a drug dealer. That's too bad. The first film was about getting out of the life and this continues where the first one left off. O'Neal gives a powerful performance as a man taking control of his own life and finding himself and his roots. As a first time director O'Neal did a great job. His only real "error" is in the third act when our hero is shown working on a complicated plan to escape from his captors. This scene takes place in real time and shows that Priest lives by his wits but it's far from quick or simple. It moves along slower than the more action packed finale of the first Superfly and isn't as satisfying. However, there are so many great moments in the rest of the film that it really is far better than some say it is. This is well written with a powerful performance by O'Neal. The rest of the cast is excellent too. Superfly T.N.T. remains my favorite Superfly.

A total fiasco! This movie doesn't even come near as " so bad is good " since is a total bore! The original SUPERFLY is an urban classic with a wonderful Curtis Mayfield score. This one the music by OSIBISA is good but not enough to compensate Mr. Ron O'Neal's lousy direction and Alex Hailey boring script. Sure, Mr.Hailey did a better job with ROOTS, but this story was dumb, uninteresting & forgettable. Beware, you have been warned! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Based on Chester Himes'snovel, this film marked actor-writer Ossie Davis's directing debut. Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques play Himes's volatile police detectives, Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, who are on the trail of white men who pulled an armed stickup at a Back to Africa rally in Harlem. The money belongs to the poor people who paid for a chance to return to the motherland--but was it really a stickup? Or is the flashy preacher at the center of the Back to Africa movement (Calvin Lockhart) involved in a scam to rip off his own people? The plot drags; the best part of the film are the performances (as well as spotting cameos by such actors as the then-unknown Cleavon Little) and the on-location shooting in parts of New York where a camera had rarely ventured previously. Redd Foxx shows up in a small part as a ragpicker that led to his role in TV's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It Got Soul!
Cotton Comes To Harlem is a movie produced in the time of Black Exploitation films.Fortunately, this movie doesn't fit the mode. It got a lot of soul and laughter.A very good cast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor at its finest
This is the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life.Only Richard Pryor ever made me laugh harder.Rex Reed, the movie critic whose tongue was sharper than a sword, said that you needed to sit through two showing in a theatre so you could hear the lines you missed because people were laughing so hard.He was right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electrifying Inner-City Comic Thriller
Director Ossie Davis delivers not only a taut police thriller but a film that inserts the concerns of the civil rights movement circa 1970 in a fascinating way.Filmed on actual locations the film just exudes authenticity and atmosphere. For a film that keeps it real I found it interestingthat the film's score was composed by Galt McDermott of "Hair" fame(?!).Another minor quibble is that the violence in the film was at times over-the-top.Godfrey Cambridge as Gravedigger Jones and Raymond St. Jacques as Coffin Ed Johnson make an engaging pair. They assume their duty as New York police detectives is to protect their people from predators whether they be black or white even if at times they are at odds with their white captain.Calvin Lockhart is deliciously smarmy as Reverend Deke O'Malley who bilks his congregants out of cash for a bogus back to Africa scheme.Judy Pace is seductively evil as Iris, O'Malley's main squeeze.Redd Foxx is underutilized here as a junk dealer but his character does prove integral to the film's plot. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars GOOD MOVIE
This was an entertaining movie, which is more than I can say for some other movies that get rave reviews.I guess everyone sees things differently, therefore, form different opinions.Compared to Shaft of the past, this one doesn't stack up, but I don't think the intent was to compare.
4-0 out of 5 stars good movie
This movie has a lot of meaning behind it. The actors put on a really good show. Movie is lacking special effects but that does not hurt the quality in any way. Story keeps on unfolding in unexpected ways.
2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been so much better!
I have to say that I am not familiar with any of the old Shaft episodes, or had had any other contact with the character apart from this movie so I cannot make any comparisons to other sources, nor can I take part in discussing the technicalities and the specifics like other reviewers have. Therefore, coming from someone that did not "know" of Shaft prior to the film I have to say... that I was rather disappointed!

When a pal of detective John Shaft is murdered in a bombing (and $250,000 in cash turns up missing), New York's coolest private eye finds himself caught in the middle of a power struggle between black and white gangsters over the numbers racket in Queens. Directed by Gordon Parks (who does a brief cameo as a croupier in an illegal casino) and written by Ernest Tidyman (both of whom did the original Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot!
Of all of the movies that I own, I keep coming back to the Shaft movies.I wish that they could have made more of them.Don't listen to others, this one is just as good as the first one!
