3-0 out of 5 stars The original is still the best
Like most sequals, this movie is not of the same caliber of the original Cleopatra Jones. It is, however, entertaining, and collectors of Urban 70's movies will find this one a "must have" for the collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cleo and Mi Ling are unstoppable!
Typical blaxploitation from the 70's but with a great flair in that that leading roles are played by two hot butt kicking ethnic Princesses! Cleo knows her Kung Fu and uses it well. My fav is the asian hottie Mi. In one scene Mi has just finished showering and walks out into the living room in her bathrobe only to be greeted by a group of intruders. They proceed to tie her hands up but are in for real surprise. This lady is a deadly martial artist. With her hands still tied, she turns her bare legs and feet into deadly weapons overpowering the men with some explosive kicks. She is soon joined by Cleo and the girls finally finish the guys off leaving the baddies knocked out cold. Although a bit campy, this movie is a cult classic and a great sequel to the original.

4-0 out of 5 stars A true gem
This movie only gets better with multiple viewings.Although this is a sequel you do not have to watch the first movie, simply titled, Cleopatra Jones, to understand Casino of Gold. For various reasons a third movie was not made. ENJOY and have a great time watching a great action film. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I LOVED IT AGAIN
I saw this movie the one and only time when I was eight in the theatre and I remember the entire black audience roaring through the whole thing. I didn't know what was better, Black Belt Jones, Enter the Dragon, or Three the Hard Way. But I do know I loved them all. I'm now 39 and I've seen Three'' and Enter'' a couple of times over the years but I could not find Black Belt Jones anywhere to save my life. Well, turns out a friend of mine had a copy on DVD (yes there is one) and I just watched it. I LOVED IT ALL OVER AGAIN! Sure, it's campy and very seventies, but for some reason (maybe the comedy) it stands out as the best of the Blaxplotation genre. As a young black kid in the seventies I loved Jim Kelly (Wow, a black Bruce Lee) and I wanted a fro like his. Hmmmmm, memories. The theme song was borrowed a bit by LL Cool Jay for Jingeling Baby. (WAN UN WAN UN WAN UN WYETT)I Highly recommend this one for any body looking to simply have a good time with a creative martial arts movie that will have you in stitches. OH, AND WHAT IN THE HELL KINDA CAR WAS THAT THE JIM KELLY WAS DRIVING. IT LOOKS LIKE A CROSS BETWEEN A PACER AND AN OLD DODGE CHALLENGER. Oh, and let me add that this movie showed the original gangsta cell phone in action. I'll leave that one to when you watch it.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best bad movies ever
This film isn't a comedy, but the opening credits are 3 of the funniest minutes in motion picture history!A friend and I like to watch bad films, and I recommended this one to him; he ended up thinking it was even funnier than I did.
5-0 out of 5 stars Seriously, WB. Where's the DVD????????
Hands down a absolute classic of blaxploitation and martial arts. The opening credits alone is more fun than most of the movies out today.

Oh man.1-0 out of 5 stars OH!My Aching Head!
How did this movie ever make my local video store shelf?I too, love "B" movies, but this one left me in shock! Are we to take this flick seriously? One question..........how did Rhino keep that toy car under that poncho as he traveled through the jungle fighting off armies of little men dressed like cavemen???What about the scene where the armies run out in pairs and stand with their backs to the camera looking at the forest??My mouth was hanging open throughout this film, trying to figure out if it was a martial arts movie or a comedy.I told my son that he was in for a thrill when he watched it after me.He's the one that paid the 50 cents to rent it anyway.I liked the other reviews and laughed when I read them too. ... Editorial Review

Pam Grier is Friday Foster, a photographer's assistant at a glamourmagazine assigned to cover the secret arrival of a reclusive black millionaire(Thalmus Rasula). "Just get your cute little behind out there and take yourlittle pictures and goddammit don't get involved!" Of course she does: The sceneerupts into an attempted assassination, and Friday digs up a conspiracy thatreaches to Washington, D.C., and involves sassy, flamboyant fashion designerEartha Kitt, lascivious but good-at-heart minister Scatman Crothers, and apowerful black congressman. Yaphet Kotto costars as a good-natured P.I. she tagsalong as a sidekick and bodyguard, and Carl Weathers makes a strong impressionas a silent but deadly hit man systematically silencing potential witnesses. Thescript feels more like a comic book than a movie (it was inspired by a newspapercomic strip), with Grier playing Friday as a plucky, resourceful amateur, stealing cars and stalking killers armed with nothing but a fully loaded camera. She's better as the street-smart pistol-packin' mamas of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still a Whole Lotta Woman!!!
Pam Grier is smokin hot in this blaxploitation classic...and enough "Jive" dialect to keep you laughing for days!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars So-So Pam Grier Vehicle
Pam Grier is fine as the spunky photo-journalist title character and Yaphet Kotto is amusing as her P.I. sidekick helping her ferret out the "black widow" conspiracy.Their efforts are essentially for naught in this sluggishly directed actioner that has the substance of your average Spelling-Goldberg production.Lots of prominent African-American talent on hand(Eartha Kitt, Godfrey Cambridge, Scatman Crothers, etc.) but their impact is marginal. What this film needed was Sid Haig!

4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, Whatcha Doin' Girl?
Friday Foster may not be Foxy Brown, but it's well worth your time if you're into this genre. It does have a catchy little theme song!It doesn't have alot of the action and violence of other Grier films, it's more about unravelling a conspiracy.Jim Backus is given high billing, but only appears in one scene.Carl Weathers is at the bottom of the billing, but appears in most of the film-But that's a good thing, coz who doesn't like Carl Weathers?Yaphet Koto, as usual, is a joy, and actually gets a few laughs. For those like myself who occasionally fantasize coming home from work to find a naked Pam Grier in the kitchen making goulash, will enjoy the two topless scenes.Foster sure has no problem jumping into the sack with people in this one.Basically all I can say about Friday Foster is that it's a sure bet if you dig Pam Grier and/or blaxploitation movies.I know I dig. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An impressive sequel to the classic blaxploitation original
In my opinion, Scream, Blacula, Scream is every bit as good as Blacula.Rather than offering a pedestrian rehash of the whole vampirism story of the original, the sequel throws another powerful force, that of voodoo, into the mix and gives the film a whole new direction.William Marshall is just as good as before in the title role, and he meets up with a worthy possible antagonist in Pam Grier, who plays the gifted voodoo priestess he seeks out for help.Blacula, resurrected in his undead state with no further possibility of reclaiming the modern incarnation of his beloved bride, now seeks to break the curse that has made him a bloodthirsty, yet exceedingly cool, pariah on society. That doesn't mean he's not going to keep killing people and turning them into vampires in the meantime, however, so expect more jugular action as this film winds its way to a conclusion.
1-0 out of 5 stars Stupid
they should have stopped at the original BLACULA -1972 he was perfectly destroyed at the end but noooo they decide to bring him back and the story was not as fresh as the first one another thing in Blacula his Cape had silverish white linening but in this one it is Red Just like Dracula get this if only you are just wanting two have both of them that is what i did otherwise dont waste your money

4-0 out of 5 stars More Bytes from the Dark Prince of Darkness!
In 1973's SCREAM, BLACULA, SCREAM!--an excellent sequel to BLACULA (1972), the first horror entry in AIP's "blaxploitation" line--William Marshall reprises his role as the aristocratic black vampire Mamuwalde (a.k.a. Blacula).Though he was killed by sunlight at the end of the first film, the vampire brother is resurrected when his bones are used as part of an evil voodoo rite.Realizing the preternatural potential of voodoo magic, the revivified Mamuwalde enlists the aid of a beautiful and powerful voodoo priestess (Pam Grier) in hopes of being forever freed from the curse of vampirism.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars I wasn't feeling this one baby.
If I had to describe `Sheba Baby,' the best I can come up with is Pam Grier Light with some really bad mellow drama. I really tried, but this movie just didn't work for me. The action scenes were dull, the acting was surprisingly poor, and some of these characters were TOO stereotypical to even be funny.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pam Grier, Forever!
This is the first of Pam Grier's efforts that I would not lump wholly in the exploitation category.Sure, there's lots of gunplay and a redundant catfight. That said, the dialogue here avoids the tongue-and-cheek quality that was evident in "Coffy" and "Foxy Brown" and the villains here are more realistic and not as cartoonish. The underlying theme here are the underworld elements that threaten legitimate black entrepreneurs.Because the film deals with the threat more seriously the message becomes more potent.Even in this low-budget effort Grier just commands the screen like any of her contemporaries and would give a run for the money for today's top actresses. She was definitely ahead of her time.I can't recall if Halle Berry thanked her in her Oscar speech. She does not appear nude here but she looks so fabulous clothed that your imagination will do somersaults.Timeless entertainment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth it just to see Pam in a wetsuit
This may not be Pam Grier's best film, but I give it high marks, because there's a long stretch towards the end of the film where we see her in a sexy blue beavertail wetsuit. She keeps the jacket unzipped about half way through most of it, so you can get a good, alluring view of her chest. Sure, she has a swimsuit on under the wetsuit, but I find that more interesting anyway. Lets one use one's imagination, I say. You can't ask for more than a beautiful woman in a beavertail wetsuit (and if you ARE asking for things like character development, fine acting, etc you're really looking in the wrong place). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars If you take is seriously then you're totally missing the point!
A Low Down Dirty Shame is really no more than all the most familiar Cop movie clichs arranged in an order that makes a barely cohesive story. But it's all the fun and silly action that occurs in between that really matters! It's a bit like The Last Boy Scout from a spoof-blaxploitation angle.
5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT MOVIE
This movie is perfect. It has Comedy, action, drama, lots of shooting, I guess I would recomend this for all action lovers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Another Private Eye Adventure
This 1971 film opens with traffic in wintry Manhattan. Detective John Shaft crosses the street and dodges cars. [Note how the prices mentioned are far out of date since Nixon's 1971 devaluation of the dollar!] Two "friends" are looking for Shaft, but they do not get what they want. One quickly leaves out of a window. Now the police interview Shaft to find out what happened. Shaft telephones "Bumpy" to arrange a meeting. Bumpy's daughter has been kidnapped, and he wants Shaft to get her back. Shaft searches for his friend Ben; the landlord (Gordon Parks) doesn't know. Shaft finds his old friend and asks about Marcy (Bumpy's daughter); Ben doesn't know. Shots ring out, and dying man falls into the room. The group scatters, but most are mowed down in an ambush. Shaft suspects a conspiracy theory is operating. Lt. Vic Andozzi tells Shaft what Bumpy tried to do. "Money always matters" says Bumpy as he makes a deal with Shaft.

Great early 1970's Det. movie starring Rich
5-0 out of 5 stars "The Man"

This middling but entirely watchable blaxploitation thriller from 1975 stars football-legend-turned-actor Fred Williamson as the brother of a murdered bar owner in a racially divided town. After bringing in a gaggle of tough street buddies from the old neighborhood to help break up a corrupt police force, Williamson's character figures he can settle into domestic bliss with Pam Grier. But there's a snag: the hero's restless posse decides to take over the white cops' graft operation, forcing a bloody finale of retribution. In the '70s genre of reactionary revenge movies, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars And I was there....
What can I say, I'm bias, why... not because this was another of those "black" films everyone thought should be made but because I actually had a small bit part in it.Yep, stood out there in the cold of Platte City (MO), with about 16 other extras. Saw the open call for extras on the bulletin board at school and answered the call. Hey, no money, no true fame, but at least my segment didn't get tossed to the cutting room floor and it was fun "being in a movie"

3-0 out of 5 stars Williamson Takes Over the Town, and the Film, Too
As a soul cinema fan, it is hard for me to criticize this film, which unites two Afro-American icons, Pam Grier and Fred Williamson.Still, I must confess my disappointed feelings after watching "Bucktown," a rather mediocre film, considering those two fantastic leads.4-0 out of 5 stars cool film

4-0 out of 5 stars Hell yeah! a lot of Laugh
I like this movie a lot, it had boxing, crazy characters, a midget, and one of the very disgusting scene of all the times, a guy head sumerged in a toilet, previously used (with turd and all). Mr.t work here and he is hilarious as always.

1-0 out of 5 stars .........
worst movie in the history of american cinema!you need to be checked out if you actually think this was good.their doing nice things in mental institutions these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars BEST BOXING MOVIE EVER!
Penitentiary 2 is the best of the Penitentiary flicks. It has the drama of Rocky, the comedy of an old Rudy Ray Moore flick, and the edge of an episode of OZ (HOOOOOOAAAAH).Speaking of OZ, this flick has Ernie Hudson in it.Oh and don't let me forget to mention that this movie has the ultimate action TV hero of the 80's MR. T! My favorite character in this movie is Mr. Seldom Seems. This guy's beard is as thick and round as the afro on his head and he's always telling people not to touch him. He's got a thing about people touching him, he's sort of like Rain Man except he doesn't scream when he's hugged he just starts throwing blows. If you want to watch a classic boxing movie, then P2 is it.......OOOH YEAH, there's a drag queen and a midget in this movie also ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One Vicious A$$ Piece of Jelly
One of my favorite movies of all time. Sad at times funny as well, but also some serious parts. Maybe not today but there are many stories like this from that time. This movie tells a story of truth that can really occur.
5-0 out of 5 stars Get the DVD ! ! !
First of all, if you haven't seen The Mack yet and don't own a million copies (videos, taped off cable whatever) either you're too young, or something is a matter with you... this is just one of THOSE films... and it is the epitome of everything cool and funky about the '70s... Hey its a film about Mackin', right ?But what gets this version worth having is the commentary, both by Julien, the Director and other people involved... apparenty the story behind the story is almost as interesting as the film...Its hard to believe that the film was pretty much based on a true story and amazing to hear the true story of Fred Ward - - the Mack and drug kingpin of the West Coast who acted in the film AND provided security... but was shot in the back of the head after filming... with the finger pointed according to SOME people to Huey Newtown and the Black Panthers (who certain cast members allege acted more like gangsters than the gangsters.) And then there's the story of some of Richard Pryor's bizarre behaviour.
4-0 out of 5 stars DVD version puts The Mack in the proper perspective

4-0 out of 5 stars Great action vehicle for Jim Brown fans!
Jim Brown is Slaughter, a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who's not long back from the service when his parents are killed in a car-bomb murder. It turns out Slaughter's dad (it's never explicitly stated, but he was apparently involved in a mild hustle, like the numbers) somehow stumbled upon a computer printout of a Mob operation's payoff roster. But he was killed before he could make a deal for its safe return.Slaughter then makes moves to find the killers, while being shadowed byKim (Marlene Clark), an undercover federal agent.A shootout at an airport puts Slaughter at odds with the U.S. Treasury Department, who then send him to an unnamed South American country to track down the surviving crooks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Old school action!
This is quite an entertaining 70's action movie. The acting, as in most action movies, is a bit superficial, but the overall movie is solid.Jim Brown, given his impressive size, is perfect as a tough action hero. The majority of the movie is set in Mexico, thus giving it an exotic feel. The racial epithets by the villains also give the movie an appropriate sense of the palpable racism of the 70's. Rip Torn gives an over-the-top performance as the main bad-guy Hoffo. As noted in the other reviews, Stella Stevens is perfect eye-candy in her supporting role.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhere between Superfly and Dolemite
As a white boy from Ohio, I've always had a fondness for Blaxploitation flicks from the 1970's.They were loud and bold, action-packed and takin'-no-sass.They felt like renegade productions, and I dug everything about them. The funky soundtracks, the outrageous fashions, the over-the-top acting and action.Watching them now just takes me back to the 70's like an old song.

Editorial Review

Based on Chester Himes'snovel, this film marked actor-writer Ossie Davis's directing debut. Godfrey Cambridge and Raymond St. Jacques play Himes's volatile police detectives, Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson, who are on the trail of white men who pulled an armed stickup at a Back to Africa rally in Harlem. The money belongs to the poor people who paid for a chance to return to the motherland--but was it really a stickup? Or is the flashy preacher at the center of the Back to Africa movement (Calvin Lockhart) involved in a scam to rip off his own people? The plot drags; the best part of the film are the performances (as well as spotting cameos by such actors as the then-unknown Cleavon Little) and the on-location shooting in parts of New York where a camera had rarely ventured previously. Redd Foxx shows up in a small part as a ragpicker that led to his role in TV's Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It Got Soul!
Cotton Comes To Harlem is a movie produced in the time of Black Exploitation films.Fortunately, this movie doesn't fit the mode. It got a lot of soul and laughter.A very good cast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Humor at its finest
This is the funniest movie I have ever seen in my life.Only Richard Pryor ever made me laugh harder.Rex Reed, the movie critic whose tongue was sharper than a sword, said that you needed to sit through two showing in a theatre so you could hear the lines you missed because people were laughing so hard.He was right.

4-0 out of 5 stars Electrifying Inner-City Comic Thriller
Director Ossie Davis delivers not only a taut police thriller but a film that inserts the concerns of the civil rights movement circa 1970 in a fascinating way.Filmed on actual locations the film just exudes authenticity and atmosphere. For a film that keeps it real I found it interestingthat the film's score was composed by Galt McDermott of "Hair" fame(?!).Another minor quibble is that the violence in the film was at times over-the-top.Godfrey Cambridge as Gravedigger Jones and Raymond St. Jacques as Coffin Ed Johnson make an engaging pair. They assume their duty as New York police detectives is to protect their people from predators whether they be black or white even if at times they are at odds with their white captain.Calvin Lockhart is deliciously smarmy as Reverend Deke O'Malley who bilks his congregants out of cash for a bogus back to Africa scheme.Judy Pace is seductively evil as Iris, O'Malley's main squeeze.Redd Foxx is underutilized here as a junk dealer but his character does prove integral to the film's plot. ... Editorial Review

Special agent Cleopatra Jones (Tamara Dobson), six feet two inches of sinewy fighting fury clad in layers of runway chic fashions in bright rainbow colors, strolls up a sand dune and orders the destruction of a Turkish poppy field. Thousands of miles away, an L.A. drug lord named Mommy (Shelley Winters hamming it up with garish wigs and lecherous leers) screeches as her life blood burns away and lures Cleopatra stateside to plot her demise. A product of the "blaxploitation" explosion of low-budget thrillers featuring black heroes in the 1970s, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES
I can watch this movie over and over! True 70's movie that takes me back...RIP Tamara (10/2/2006)

4-0 out of 5 stars 'Cleopatra Jones' is a must see for 70s buffs.
I think Tamara Dobson is absolutely stunning in the movie she's no Pam Greir but she does have some spunk in her. 'Cleopatra Jones' is one of my favourite 1970s exploitation movies. While technically blaxploitation it bears very little resemblance to the grittiness and relative realism of 'Shaft', 'Superfly' or 'Black Caesar'. It is closer to 'Black Belt Jones' meets James Bond, especially the spectacular opening sequence in Turkey. If you don't take it too seriously this is fantastic fun.
4-0 out of 5 stars Black "woman power" films
I am a true fan of blaxploitation films especially when the film displays a woman and her ability to be a hero. It is still a male dominated world and even more so back then woman had to prove that they could hold their own. In this film a woman is the hero showing much strength and courage in her battle against the bad guys. I like how the film has an intellegent side to our hero making her more dangerous to the enemy by using not just her fist but her mind as well. Overall, a good movie. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars * * * * * for the film, cut is butchered...
First, I have to point out like one of the other reviewers, the company that released it has BUTCHERED the cut, scenes are put together out of order, stuff missing, etc.Its almost to the point of ruining the film... Unfortunately, the video edition is so hard to find you might have to settle for it anyway... and still the scenes are great, but the cut will make the film feel far choppier than it actually was - - Ashame because I actually like this one more than Dolemite. The opening credits alone with the ULTRA FUNKY MUSIC and the cheap opening credits is hillarious...especially when we find out that Dolemite was so funky that he created his own form of Kung Fu that incorporated funky disco movies - - and when he wasn't practising Kung Fu he had some funky moves (and ladies) elsewhere. In fact, while arguably many of the ladies on his album covers could look pretty nasty at times, the chicks in this film are built for speed - - and well exhibited.Take the legendary "interrogation" scene with Mrs. Cavalette (when Dolemite ummmmmmmmm... questions her so hard, the hotel room starts collapsing from the ceiling...
3-0 out of 5 stars So Bad, It's Good.
If you're in need of some good laughs and are willing to overlook poor dialogue, an even worse plot and shoddy camera work, this is your movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Kung-Fu is worth the purchase price alone!!!
Don't believe the fools who doubt Rudy Ray Moore!!! How can people look at the Dolemite movies seriously? The opening credits are printed on his GIANT JAMES-BROWN-STYLE CAPE!! You'll never enjoy the sensory overload and outright absurdity of these movies if you try to THINK about them. Just have a six-pack and a few smart-mouthed friends around when you watch it. 3-0 out of 5 stars Decent sequel to the dynamite first film--
Army veteran Slaughter's latest adventure doesn't take him to South America (incongruously referenced as Mexico here), but there's still plenty of trouble to be found in the U.S.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than "Slaughter"
A lot of people feel that the original "Slaughter" is the best one, but "Rip Off" is a much superior sequel. This is still a "revenge flick", but the characters are far more intersting. Jim Brown gets to have alot more fun and alot more sex. The added bonus is Dick Anthony Williams portrayal as a Pimp/Burgular who helps Slaughter bring down the Mob.The only downside to this one is that most of the songs from James Brown's classic soundtrack are missing from the movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Exciting: See the First "Slaughter" & Stella Instead
"Slaughter" may not be exactly a first-rate action film, but it still can be proud of its own energy and Stella Stevens. Its quickly-made sequel has none of them; instead, you got Ed McMahon as a villain.Oh no....Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars To stop this mutha takes one bad brutha...
Back in the early 1970s someone (producer Samuel Z. Arkoff, I believe) got the bright idea to mix the genres of blaxploitation and horror, the result being the film Blacula (1972), which did well enough commercially to warrant a sequel titled Scream Blacula Scream (1973).Neither film was particularly favored by critics, but audiences enjoyed them, as they soon developed cult followings. This prompted others to try their hand at the newly formed hybrid genre, including producer Frank R. Saletri with his release of Blackenstein (1973), which he also wrote.Directed by William A. Levey (Wham Bam Thank You Spaceman, Skatetown, U.S.A.), the film stars John Hart ("The Lone Ranger", "Hawkeye and the Last of the Mohicans") and Ivory Stone, in her only silver screen appearance. Also appearing is Joe De Sue, Roosevelt Jackson (China Heat), Andrea King (The Lemon Drop Kid), and a list of others really not worth mentioning (after watching the film last night I'm betting those that were mentioned probably wish they weren't).
