Editorial Review

Elaine May wrote, directed, and starred in this acidic comedy about a wealthy playboy (Walter Matthau) who discovers that he has nearly spent all of his fortune. Casting about for a solution to his money problems that won't actually involve work, he finds a desperate solution: He'll marry an heiress (May) for her fortune. The hitch: She's a social maladept ("The woman is feral," Matthau growls). Indeed, Matthau finds marriage so intolerable that he decides there's only one course of action, which is to actively pursue making himself a widower by bumping her off. An offbeat, funny, and dry film, with a wonderfully misanthropic performance by Matthau and a sharply drawn one by May. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WHY is this film NOT on DVD!!!???
I'm very pleased to see a flurry of 'new'/er reviews of this film.I only hope the DVD gods take notice!!
5-0 out of 5 stars A film no fan of comedy should miss
This touching, sly, hilarious comedy with understated performances should be on DVD. Walter Matthau's transformation from a vain, self-absorbed product of inherited wealth into a caring human being is brilliantly written and played. Elaine May's klutzy, endearing, naive Henrietta is one of the loveliest of screen portrayals. This film is a true classic, under-seen and under-appreciated.

5-0 out of 5 stars An exemplary undertaking
My predecessors in reviewing this movie have done a great job of detailing it's highlights... I cannot advance their descriptions and their accolades any farther than they have done.I will, however, add that this is one of those movies that when you see it on cable at 3 am, you will not be able to turn it off. After you watched it and failed to find the title you will canvas your friends to try to find out the name of the movie... when noone knows what you're talking about, go to your secretary who will google the actor and the story line and come up with the name of the movie and you try to find the dvd and it won't exist...then you vainly try to find the title anywhere and it comes up on vhs. BUY IT because if you don't you will certainly wish you had. I have a brand new vhs player sitting in my attic in the box so that in the future, when the vhs player is no longer available and the studio wonks refuse to put classics on dvd, I will still be able to play these movies like "New Leaf" that aren't on DVD. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars streep is a creep but goldie rawks!
why does meryl streep continue to think she can do comedy?(then again, why does meryl streep continue to think she can do drama?)but never mind, bruce willis is wonderfully understated here and goldie is goldie.this is hardly a great movie but its fun for what it is.
5-0 out of 5 stars A TERRIFIC MOVIE THAT WARRANTS A WIDESCREEN RELEASE ASAP!
This movie is a real hoot, with Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn embroiled in a Bette Davis/Joan Crawford-type feud... the plot was pure genius and the special effects were ahead of their time. With terrific performances by all the leads, this one is an "essential video" for your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars A witty and funny comedy
A witty and funny comedy with a dark and hysterically devilish undertone. The three actors, Meryl Streep, Goldie Hawn and Bruce Willis play their parts brilliantly making what could be an oddball script into a brilliantly comedic classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars God didn't put us here to spend our lives in cubicles!
When I first saw this little film, it was aired on Comedy Central with none of the fanfare that it should have received since it's initial release. In fact, Office Space has reached cult status for a reason. It's funny, witty, and always makes you laugh. The cast includes Jennifer Aniston in a supporting role as the waitress/girlfriend of Ron Livingston's character who has an epiphany during a group therapy session. Alex Wentworth plays his girlfriend in her shorter role. Anyway, I don't remember the man who plays the Arab employee and friend of Ron's character but he should be applauded for his role. Newsradio Stephen Root should have his own sitcom for his performance as Milton, the poor picked on employee who reaches a breaking point in the film. Diedrich Bader plays the neighbor next door who offers wisdom to Ron's character in the film. Mad TV's alum Gregory Herman plays another colleague and computer geek. Another Mad TV alum Orlando Jones plays a guy selling magazines door to door. HE turns out not to be the person you think he is. Gary Cole has a memorable performance as the boss who thinks he knows it all but doesn't know anything. Movies like Office Space make me understand what we have become for those of us in the office. Imagine, if we just didn't have to work anymore. That would be heaven for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Off the Hizzy!
This movie is made for the DVD format.Repeat viewings. While some may call it over rated, and unfunny, those would be individuals who do not know the definition of funny. Please consult Wester's dictionary, available for sale at this website.
5-0 out of 5 stars FUNNY AND DELIGHTFUL COMEDY
"Office Space" is a very funny comedy. Many parts of the film were a delight. In the beginning, when everyone is stalled in traffic, I knew the feeling. Working at Initech Corporation as a computer programmer makes for one dull job in the life of Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston). Besides having a job he hates, he is enclosed in a cubicle as everyone else is. Then there is his boss Lumbergh--an arrogant jerk. Life for Peter Gibbons is just one boring day after another. That is until he decides to go see a counselor at the suggestion [and demands] of his then girlfriend.

A reporter and his psychopathic lawyer go to Las Vegas in order to report on motorcycle race...on just about every drug imaginable under the sun.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
I was one of the few that actually saw "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". Not because of any affinity for Hunter S. Thompson(who I had never heard of before; forgive me I was fourteen), but after seeing this movie, which is best described as a "flawed masterpiece", I immediatley became a fan of the man, as I am still a fan of this movie.
2-0 out of 5 stars Long and Boring
Long on loathing. Boring, I fear. This trip was at somewhere I've never been, and I don't want to go there. A place beyond the event horizon. Who could care less about these people? Great title for a book, or a film, though. For some reason I've given it an extra star. I don't know why. Perhaps because it definitely belongs in anybody's collection of bizarre movies. ... Editorial Review

Black comedies don't come much blacker than this cult favorite from 1972, and they don't come much funnier, either. It seemed that director Hal Ashby was the perfect choice to mine a mother lode of eccentricity from the original script by Colin Higgins, about the unlikely romance between a death-obsessed 19-year-old named Harold (Bud Cort) and a life-loving 79-year-old widow named Maude (Ruth Gordon). They meet at a funeral, and Maude finds something oddly appealing about Harold, urging him to "reach out" and grab life by the lapels as opposed to dwelling morbidly on mortality. Harold grows fond of the old gal--she's a lot more fun than the girls his mother desperately matches him up with--and together they make Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I Go To Funerals.
Harold and Maude is Hal Ashby's 1971 cult hit. Dividing critics, the film nevertheless collected a massive following, spawned a play on Broadway, and has also given birth to new phrases, "Harolding" and "Maudism".
5-0 out of 5 stars One of THE BEST films to help you face living
Prior to VHS or DVD - back in 1971-75 - when movie theaters (remember those, the ones where it was only $1 for two films and a short and the films were shown in BIG theaters - so what if the sound wasn't Dolby or DTS - films were still films not; just 1 of 10 stock plots enhanced by computer special effects.
4-0 out of 5 stars Still Quirky and Funny Black Comedy Tells the Ultimate Opposites-Attracts Love Story
This 1971 black comedy is still a stitch, even if it doesn't feel as audacious as I'm sure it once did. Directed by the maverick Hal Ashby, it is the epitome of all opposites-attract love stories as a twenty-year old depressive connects with a 79-year old life-loving woman. They actually bond over their mutual interest in death, as they keep showing up at the same funerals. However, the root of their respective interests couldn't be more different - Maude shows up to reconfirm how lucky she feels to be alive, while the hearse-driving Harold simply likes the morbidity of it all.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please movie studio, reissue this movie!
This movie, very unfortunately, is out of print. The only "brand new" DVD version of it that you can get is from some outfit out of England that made a pretty crappy copy of it, according to the reviews I read on Amazon UK.And by the way you can buy that version of it cheaper on that website.
5-0 out of 5 stars they don't make em like they used to.
WHEN YOU THINK OF RIP ROARING COMEDY AND RIB SPLITTING LAUGHTER YOU DON'T THINK OF MARLON BRANDO OR FOR THAT MATTER DAVID NIVEN. THE PAIRING OF THESE TWO UNLIKELY FELLOWS PRODUCED ONE OF THE MOST WATCHABLE COMEDIC SATIRES OF THE LAST 50 YEARS. EVERY SCENE HAS YOU ON YOUR TOES ANTICIPATING THE PUNCH LINE. BRANDO'S DESCRIPTION ON THE TRAIN OF MEN BEING LIKE ORANGES CAST ASIDE BY WOMEN WHEN THEY HAVE SQUEEZED ALL THE JUICE OUT OF THEM IS CLASSIC. AND HIS PERMISSION TO GO TO THE BATHROOM AT THE TABLE WAS SIMPLY HILARIOUS. BUT THE CORKER WAS WHEN DR. EMIL TESTED THE SENSITIVITY OF HIS FEET WITH A RIDING CROP. THE TEARS OF JOY WERE HOWLINGLY FUNNY. SO MANY QUIPS,LOOKS,DEADPANS,AND CLEVER DOUBLE ENTENDRE'S MAKE THIS AN ABSOULTE MUST SEE IF YOU HAVE MANAGED TO MISS IT. FORGET STEVE MARTIN'S REMAKE, OF DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS. IT'S JUST A PAPER COPY WITHOUT ANY OF THE COLOR OR PIZAZZ OF THE ORIGINAL. PREPARE TO LAUGH TILL YOU CRY AND THEN CALL YOUR BEST FRIEND AND LOAN THE TAPE OR DVD TO THEM. THEY WILL FOREVER BLESS YOU FOR IT.

1-0 out of 5 stars God Awful piece of junk. Avoid at all costs.
This was one of the worst bad crappy movies I've seen. Al Franken falls flat on his face in this one. I found none of the jokes funny and it was one of those squeeze a buck out of a character SNL movies. Franken is funny on SNL and Stuart actually made me laugh on the show but this movie was travesty of the first rate. Like I said there is good crappy movies which I watch like Plan 9 from Outer Space, Flash Gordon, the Monster Squad, and the like that are bad films but pieces of art that make you laugh and entertain you. This movie was not one of them. If you think I'm some right wing red neck out to get Franken your dead wrong I'm far from it although I do find this up tight new air america Franken annoying though. The point is not his politics but this stupid waste of Hollywood money on this garbage that isn't funny or entertaining at all. In fact half way through it my ex girl friend had to wake me up because my head was starting hurt her shoulder. Forget this movie if you want a good crappy movie watch "Killer Klowns from Outer Space." Trust me its the best thing to do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stuart is the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, Erotic, & Endlessly Enjoyable
I've learned to accept Almodovar as he has (ahem) matured & gotten serious. He is my favorite director so I support all his progressions. However! I'm deeply & irrevocably in love with the movie Kika, its colors, its actors, its characters, its music, its dialogue, its spell. Having watched it as much as I have, I've analyzed scenes & themes that otherwise would have escaped a one time viewing only. For example, notice how Ramon kneels in front of three women, for different purposes. First the model in the opening credits as he photographs her in bed. Next, he kneels in front of his dead mother as he opens her blouse to reveal her wound. Finally, in front of Kika as he makes love to her. The posters throughout the film hint at the action to take place in the future scenes. The dialogue is hilarious beyond belief & is not all translated or not translated acurately in the subtitles. If you are an Almodovar fan, you owe it to yourself to study Spanish & brush up on Castillian regionalisms to get the fully, mordant sinuousness of the dialogue. Kika is a black comedy & must be enjoyed as such, otherwise one would not laugh at the bizarre costumes, the multiple deaths, the rape as much-needed outlet for the retarded ex-porn star, the fickleness of love, the unfaitfulness throughout. Finally, I suspect that public taste or America's increasing discomfort with black comedy when its applied to rape, is delaying or preventing the rerelease of Kika on dvd. Its available in Brazil, but, of course not with English subtitles.

5-0 out of 5 stars "In my own dirty and silent way, I loved you."
"Kika" (Veronique Forque) is a bubbly beautician who has a poor history with men ("I always get the weirdos"). She lives with photographer Ramon who has a few kinky habits. Ramon has never forgotten his mother's suicide, and he has mixed feelings about his sinister step-father (Peter Coyote). Ramon's ex-girlfriend, Andrea Scarface (Victoria Abril) is the bizarre former psychologist-turned-tabloid-crime-TV-host who continues to show a morbid interest in Ramon's life. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very funny movie [5]
This is a very funny movie. The characters are very rich. The actors and actresses does a great job. This is one fascinating movie appropriate for all ages. The interaction between all the characters are fantastic and very interesting.I highly recommended it. ... Read more

This is a review of the 1997 DVD release- thus far, as of September 2006, the only release I know of.
2-0 out of 5 stars Say 5 times Beetlejuice and hope that it appears again
I really hopes that Beetlejuice would appear again. At least on DVD. Because this is a very poor edition with no extras at all. Just the plain old transfer with no remastered sound or nothing new. The only good extra features in this disc are the spanish and french tracks that doesn't mean that there no spanish and french subtitles also. As with any Tim Burton title, I wish a special edition would come up with all the backstage and in the making footage that make us understand the dificulties of doing a complex (and simple) movie like Beetlejuice.

Director John Waters creates here a wickedly funny--and nasty--comedy starring Kathleen Turner as the ultimate suburbanite: a woman so obsessed with suburban perfection that she kills a neighbor for not separating her recyclables. Hubby Sam Waterston and kids Matthew Lillard and Ricki Lake don't have a clue that in fact it is squeaky-clean mom who is the killer at large in their Baltimore neighborhood and who has murdered, among others, the guy who dumped her daughter. The final courtroom scene is a riot, turning her into a celebrity defendant (long before O.J.) and featuring a terrific cameo by Patty Hearst (yes, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Over-the-Top, But That's the Point
When people (mostly critics) mention two John Waters films they say Hairspray and Serial Mom. The first John Waters film I ever saw was "Pink Flamingos" and until I watched this, that film was the only one I had seen. Waters made that film (commonly called the most disgusting film ever made and rightly so) to get his name out there; His plan worked. He never made a film like that movie, but he still makes films with the intention of shocking his audience. Serial Mom is a comedy that is very over-the-top and has a lot to say about the media. Having only seen Pink Flamingos, I can't believe the same person wrote and directed both of these movies. They both have a strange vision for sure, but they're very different films. Kathleen Turner ('The Virgin Suicides') plays Beverly Sutphin is the definition of a perfect suburban mom. She's like those characters you see in 60's television shows like Leave It to Beaver. She has a loving husband (Sam Waterston)and two children (Ricki Lake and Scooby Doo's Matthew Lillard) Misty and Chip. Everything seems perfect; Then two detectives show up at the Sutphin household to ask Beverly about obscene phone calls her neighbor Dottie (Mink Stole, who worked with Waters on Pink Flamingos as Connie Marble)has been getting. But, Beverly couldn't possibly be making such calls. Or is she? Pretty soon, obscene phone calls escalate to murder, which begins with her son Chip's math teacher. When Beverly is finally arrested after a series of murders, the film really goes over-the-top. The movie isn't perfect; Kathleen Turner is perfect as Beverly Sutphin, but the movie has its share of flaws. It's not hilariously funny, it's mildly funny. The comedy is more to be appreciated than to be enjoyed. This movie is entertaining and it's funny how true most of this stuff is. Look for cameos by former porn star Traci Lords and John Waters as the voice of Ted Bundy. If you like Waters' stuff, check this movie out. If you don't, stay away.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best comedies ever.
This film was made in 1994, a few years after "Cry-Baby". John Waters has a Hollywood sized budget to work with and continues his path to more "mainstream" targeted movies. But for those fans who fear this would compromise Waters' humour - don't worry, it doesn't.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Black Comedy Ever!
I love Kathleen Turner, so when I saw this movie at the store I knew I had to have it. After I got home and watched it I loved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Odd, But Believable
In the vein of "Sex, Lies, & Videotape" and written-directed by the guy who wrote & directed the quirky "I Heart Huckabees," Spanking the Monkey is a shocking and just plain wrong look on an Oedipal relationship in modern suburbia. Oddly enough, and I say that due to the film's subject matter, the film won the 1994 Audience Award at The Sundance Film Festival. Don't get me wrong, it's a very entertaining movie; But, I'm surprised it was that widely accepted. Despite the title, the film isn't about...Choking the Bishop. Here is what the movie is about; Jeremy Davies plays Ray Aibelli, is in college and has recieved an internship in Washington. Problem is, he can't go because his pig-headed father is forcing him to take care of his mother Susan (Alberta Watson), an attractive woman probably in her 40's, who has just fractured her leg. Ray is dissapointed about losing his internship, but he still does his best to take care of his mother; While he, meanwhile, tries to woo a naive girl named Toni (Carla Gallo). Anyway, while this would be shocking to a person who began watching the movie and not knowing this, everyone knows this already, so...There's a weird kind of sexual tension we see between Ray and Susan in the beginning of the film. Especially in scenes, where Ray has to help Susan shower. The scenes aren't overly pervertedly sexual or anything, but they're not without a hint of innapropriateness either. Eventually, due to the unhealthy mix of vodka tonics and stupidity, incest occurs between Susan and Ray. Luckily, we don't have to actually observe this. We watch them roll around on the bed and then we have a quick cut to the next morning, where it's made clear something has happened. Writer/director David O. Russell makes it clear in the beginning of the movie that these characters are perfectly sane and normal. Yet somehow, when this incest finally happens we're not disgusted and it's not completely unbelievable. The way Ray reacts to it immediately and then the way he reacts to it later is questionable. Overall, this movie will not hit the right note for some people. A lot of people may be turned off by the synopsis alone, but this is a very good movie; It's entertaining and thought-provoking, in other words...Worth a watch.
4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasant movie with an unpleasant topic
Spanking the Monkey is for the open-minded only. Many will find this film horrible, wrong, and disgusting due to the fact it deals with such a forbidden topic: incest, but because of how real and natural the acting and mood of this film achieves, you understand where the main character is coming from. It is not an 'incest movie' but rather a movie about a young man finding himself, in the most bizarre way. A fine debut from director David O. Russell with solid performances from Jeremy Davies and Alberta Watson.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Spanking the Monkey was not what I expected. In fact it was a down right horrible. There is not much else to say really, except that I wasted my hard earned money buying this film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Greatest Movies Ever
Terry Gilliam is my favorite director and here he is at his best. At first the movie just seems like a dark comedy but as you watch later on you realize the absolute genius and how close this is to reality. Even if you don't really understand Brazil(and I don't quite understand it either) you can still admire the amazing art in the film and just some of the amazing visuals.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ehm...what the hell?!
This is the sort of movie where if you go "nah, didn't really like it" people will just say that you didn't get it as if you're some sort of moron, who's incapable of comprehending a movie with a more complex plot than Star Wars. The movie does have a couple of upsides (that's why I gave it 2 instead of 1 star) namely Michael Palin and the stunning visuals. The rest is dismal at best. The movie is way too long and I felt no connection to the characters whatsoever. I also don't think that Gilliam is some sort of visionary for creating this movie...does the # "1984" ring a bell? Now that was a visionary book while this is a halfhearted attempt to copy it (along with some personal additions here and there).
1-0 out of 5 stars An exercise in futility of conveying message

5-0 out of 5 stars Really funny!!
This is one of my favorite Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau movies. It is up there with the Fortune Cookie and other great ones.
1-0 out of 5 stars Wilder's Unfunny Farewell
Do not get the impression that "Buddy Buddy" (1981) is a lost masterpiece.Considering the talent involved, it's a painfully unfunny farce that died a quick death at the box office. Sadly, this was the great Billy Wilder's last film. Better to honor his memory with a screening of "The Apartment" or "Some Like It Hot."

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Lemmon and Matthau flick
With all the junk that comes out weekly on DVD, you would think that a comic masterpiecewith Jack and Walther would be out and in the stores by now.Matthau is brilliant as a hitman, very funny. ... Read more

The interaction between all the characters are fantastic and very interesting.I highly recommended it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this on DVD?
I came to "Reckless" the film after seeing the revival of the play of the same name. I had really enjoyed it, and have always been a fan of Craig Lucas. I kept asking myself, "Why haven't I seen this?" I had to go to four different video stores all over New York City before I could find a copy, but it was worth it. <
