Editorial Review

In the late '60s, the notion that reggae would become more than just anovelty act would have been laughed at. To break into the mainstream, themovement needed a powerful voice of prophetic proportions. This voice emergedfrom the collective work of three pioneering friends from Jamaica, Peter Tosh,Bunny Wailer, and Robert Nesta Marley, who sought to bring about an ideologicalrevolution through deeply meditative, hypnotic, and spiritual music. 4-0 out of 5 stars RAW!!!!!!!!
It is an insite into an arist starting off and having to compromise slighty for the bigger good.In depth on how the tracks were recorded and edited.Video and audio of how mixing and great editing can change an average song into a great song. Good for music lovers library.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for true Marley/Wailers fans
I just finished watching this fine documentary. (Picked it up for only $4.99 in a bargain bin!) The content is priceless - interviews with Bob Marley, Rita Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer are quite rare. The interviews with Chris Blackwell, the recording engineers and studio musicians from Jamaica, England and U.S. who helped to produce the groundbreaking album "Catch A Fire" are enlightening. I've been a Marley fan for 30 years and I learned a lot from watching this DVD. It illustrates, in a somewhat disjointed fashion, the Jamaican culture that gave birth to reggae music and it's ambassadors to the world, The Wailers, while recording the development of "Catch A Fire" which brought reggae to mainstream British and American rock fans. Marley fans owe a great deal to Chris Blackwell and Island records. I attended Bob Marley's last concert in America in 1981. Every week, it seems, I see another young kid wearing a Bob Marley T-shirt. Whether you're an old Marley fan or a young one, there is plenty in this DVD for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insight
This is a wonderful video for anyone interested in the technical aspects of the creation of a classic album, and the efforts of the production team to translate a "new" musical style to the masses. With a strong focus on the music-- especially the drum and bass-- and indispensible interviews with the original Wailers as well as the session musicians who contributed to the album.Bass Players will love the priceless interviews with "Family Man" Barrett and Robbie Shakespeare. This is not a concert video, but a great look behind the scenes at the making of a breakthrough record, including a track-by-track breakdown of some of the original studio tapes.Highly recommended for musicians.May bore the heck out of non-musicaians. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Wanting More
This is a great DVD mainly featuring interviews with Monk's friends and family, providing fascinating info about the man. However on my wish-list is a comprehensive DVD of Monk's performances (there seems to be plenty of footage) WITHOUT any talking over his playing!. I am much more interested in Monk's music than in the art of the video-editor. 5-0 out of 5 stars I love Monk and this video
I've watched this three times and look forward to my next viewing again. Features interviews with many of his contemporaries including Billy Taylor, Marion White, Barry Harris and his son Thelonious Mon Jr., as well as lots of footage of the master himself playing. I'm a huge Monk fan, and I found this fascinating and very informative on what made this genius tick. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars amazingly inspiring
To SEE Monk playing the piano adds a whole new dimension to his music. This man was truly channelling.Thank God for Thelonious Monk. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool, But Has Glaring Flaws
Viva Santana is an excellant way to view the many different time periods and group members of Santana. The video covers Santana's earlier days in Wood stock and on the Ed Sullivan show, and from those early days the videodoes a pretty good job of including at least on performance of Santana forevery couple of years. The bad thing about this video is that the creatorsof this video decided to run their interview with Carlos over the musicportion, which makes the music a lot harder to hear. (Couldn't they havesaved to interview portion for its own little area on the video?)Asidefrom that glaring flaw, the music on the video is fun to watch, and thisvideo serves as an okay summary of Santana's career.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice!
Enjoyed this video quite a bit....shows Santana through his many stages, including the jazz influnced 70s thru the rocking 80s. A nice mix of tone and tempo

2-0 out of 5 stars Ruined!
Whoever edited this abomination should never work with Santana material again. He showed no understanding of the qualities of Santana's appeal. He treated them like they were a pop band, always careful to to show the bandsinging (never their strong suit) without interruption. Yet whenever theband beef up the instrumental muscle, especially when Carlos himself takesa solo, this is his cue to splice in the interviews with Carlos! Aarrgh! Ifound myself ignoring Carlos's interesting comments because I was trying tolisten to the *music*! For Crissakes!Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too much jazz filler.
I thought this series (both Vol. 1 and 2) were a good source of historic blues info. I especially like the way they corelate historic events such as the 1929 Market Crash and WWII with blues events and artists. The only criticism I have is that it mixes too much jazz with the blues. I know there's a bluesy side of jazz (Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, et. al.) but that's space in the video that could have been dedicated to blues people: more down home delta guys, Chicago 50 & 60s, Texas, New Orleans, West Coast, British, you name it, but no jazz filler, please! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Too much jazz filler!
I bought both Vols. 1 and 2, and saw them one after the other, and I noticed to much jazz filler in both. I want blues. I love and respect the jazz ladies (Holliday, Leena Horn, et. al.) but I bought this for the blues. It could have contained more Delta guys, some Chicago artists, West Coast blues, Texas... come on! There's more out there to have made a beautiful video but the jazz filler just doesn't seem right on a blues video. And please don't tell me Billie Holliday is blues! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VISUAL BIOGRAPHY OF THE MAN
This documentary about one of the greatest ballad singer of his time has all a documentary should have including clips of his widow that tells a lot about what kind of man he really was;revealing television appearances in different shows including his own that was sadly put off by the sponsors after a few years;FRANK SINATRA,ELLA FITZGERALD and HARRY BELLAFONTE also add their opinions. The most important thing here is that new generations can get to know why NATHALIE COLE's father was so much loved in his lifetime. The stories of his attack by white men is shameful and so is the one about their residence in CALIFORNIA,but unfortunally they also are a part of his life. Finally, i would say that hearing STARDUST at the end pleased me a lot since it is probably the best version ever of this song.

5-0 out of 5 stars King Cole rules forever!
I loved this documentary. It was very candid. It profiles Nat's triumphs, but doesn't shy away from the tragedies, either...it captured the life from beginning to end of this larger-than-life entertainer on video, and I loved the clips of Nat singing the songs. It was a little sad to see some of the celebrities who were close friends of Nat's had since died years after this video was made (Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald) but I still enjoyed watching it. Even though they were friends of Nat's it was obvious that they were still in awe of him, as they should be.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True blues history!
This is a great slice of blues history.Rather than stocking these videosfull of "filler" (narrative, previews, historical discussion),the creators chose to highlight actual historical footage of Ms. Cotten andMr. Fuller doing what they did best -- Ms. Cotten's left-handed"Carolina" fingerpicking, later known as"Cotten-picking", and Mr. Fuller doing is sweet country blues andplaying his "foot-della", an invention he created foraccompaniment. ... If you were there to see concerts like BLACK and BLUE in the late 70's you can fully understand what this video means to a true Sabbath fan. If not you need to take the journey. enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars best ozzy documentary ever
Ozzy tells you everything about his career in his own words. It covers the suicide cases, the fireing from sabbath, the accusion of being a satan worshiper, the bat, the dove, the pissing on the alamo, and a personal lookinto ozzy's home life and his battle with drug's and alcohol. This is oneof the best movies I have ever saw about oz. I also recomend Live and Loudand The ultimate ozzy and for die hard sabbath fans like myself you shouldget Black Sabbath volume 1 (not volume 2 that's with Dio and that blows).
