5-0 out of 5 stars Now THIS is a Beatles documentary!!
I LOVE this documentary! It was one of the first that I ever watched about The Beatles and it remains a treasure of my small VHS/DVD collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best documentary at its time.
My mom introduced me to the Beatles at a ripe age of four, she was a big time Beatles fan, but I'm a bigger one, too bad I wasn't around in the 60's, I missed out on some good happenings. Anyways, we rented this video back in 1984 when it first came out, and I was hooked. Even before that, I loved the Beatles, and use to plug in the headphones and listen to their old records my mom had and this just added to my taste. You see my mom didn't have all their albums, but I ended up getting them all on vinyl before they discontinued them back in the mid 80's (the capitol albums). Anyways, what I'm getting at here, if you like the Beatles, and you don't know much about them, this will discribe it pretty good, considering it's narrarated, and it's before Anthology, and it's 1984, so they did a good recap on their lives without them really telling it themselves. It's got interesting things on their childhood, into getting interested in rock and roll, since it was born when they were teenagers, to the skiffle band John Lennon formed in 1956 called the Quarrymen, to their time in Hamburg with Stu and Pete, to kicking out Pete and getting Ringo. It's all here, from rags to riches, to fame and fortune, to calm to madness. People will remember the Beatles even hundreds years from now, and I'm not the only one who believes that. But anyways, young and old, prescious and delicate, if you like the Beatles, this should be in your collection, along with its big brother which came out about a decade later Anthology.

3-0 out of 5 stars I Can't Believe This Isn't on DVD
Back in the middle 1980s, if you were a Beatles fan this was one of your few choices in full-length home video. The misleadingly titled 'Compleat Beatles' was one of the first direct-to-video rockumentaries to later be broadcast on PBS and cable TV, and it was accompanied by a two-volume set of books containing sheet music. (The books were available separately.)

5-0 out of 5 stars MAINTAINS BETTY HUTTON'S REPUTATION FOR ENERGY.
Enthusiastically ambulating throughout this charming and funny story of silent-film Hollywood, Betty Hutton depicts a mythlike Pearl White, framed by fascinating shots of prototypical movie-making. A romantic plot involving Betty and her princely co-star, John Lund, is developed in a leisurely fashion until the rather frenetic ending. Hutton's singing is often spectacular, as with her opening number, and enjoyment is developed as the viewer identifies early stars in this fine example of 40's cinema.
3-0 out of 5 stars Perilous Presentation
I had enjoyed Betty Hutton's and William Demarest's performances so much in "The Miracle of Morgan's Creek" that I was naturally drawn to "The Perils of Pauline" where the two were reunited in starring roles. The film is fast moving, breezy and exudes a certain level of charm in its fun, nostalgic presentation of the classic silent movie serials. Hutton is very good in her teary-eyed portrayal of Pearl White, (Pauline) and gives a spirited, if not over the top performance, particularly in the song sequences. The Frank Loesser songs are quite memorable as well, one even being nominated for an Academy Award. Billy DeWolfe is very enjoyable as the requisite kooky but good-hearted sidekick, especially when playing the teeth-gnashing villain in the filmed serials. Demarest seems a bit on the subdued side, particularly after seeing him in several Sturges pictures just prior to this one. John Lund also seems to walk through this picture, stiff as a stuffed shirt, (which, to be fair, is the nature of his character) but, unfortunately, Lund carries that rigidity over into his warmer more sincere moments as well, implying perhaps that the direction on this picture was slightly less than stellar. Overall this film clearly drives home the point that MGM and Fox led the way when it came to big, Technicolor musicals of this era. And, speaking of Technicolor, I need to mention that this transfer is actually quite "contrasty" and somewhat soft compared to other musicals of the era out on DVD. I also notice a good bit of digital "monkeying" with the picture, notably at the end of scenes and through the transitions when the picture would actually slow down, strobe or even freeze frame for a moment sometimes with a jarring and annoying effect. I would suspect that this transfer to DVD may have been made from a "dupe" print and the sub standard quality of the picture had a somewhat negative effect on my overall enjoyment of this otherwise sweet little musical comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars I haven't seen this in so long!

5-0 out of 5 stars Understanding Greatness!
Ani does things her way and this movie is just another example of that fact. It is forthright and honest and some people just can't deal with the reality of that. To see, Ani talk about everything from Racism to Feminism is moving and inspiring. She is not just some pop musician who you can nod your head too and listen for the next poppy beat. She is the social conscience of a generation and this was a glimpse into her life story not a MTV video. The criticisms made here are ignorant because the movie is meant to make you feel real emotion and not just a sterile artist on a stage performing. You are supposed to have an epiphany that not everything is golden in the land of gold and you are supposed to feel motivated to do something to make it better. So, if you are looking for mindless dribble this is not your kind of movie this is a movie for those who really like art, politics and music.
5-0 out of 5 stars Glad I bought this DVD
I was worried at first after reading some of the negative reviews but decided Ani deserved the chance. I love this DVD because it is more intimate and not just another concert. I cannot stand what is on commercial radio these days which is one of the reason I like Ani and I really like this effort. This is not for those of us who are just looking to be entertained.

4-0 out of 5 stars enjoyable and insightful
if you're looking for a concert DVD, skip this and pick up trust instead. but if you're looking for insight into the force known as ani difranco, then this is a great overview. along w/ some great live performances (my fav being a lovely version of "overlap" w/ a guest guitarist), there's lots of backstage, home-y footage, inc. a nice sequence where we see the song "slide" take shape and another where we see her mixing a song for a live recording. a real draw to this DVD is getting to see ani in many of her non-songwriting aspects, including her political interests, her role as producer and record label head, and her just plain goofiness. the DVD also includes a track from each artist on her label at the time. yes, a lot of the camera work is clearly amateur, but it helps add to the overall experience w/ its immediacy and friendliness, combining to give you a great picture of ani as a person. prob. not for casual fans, but a lot of good content. p.s. what's w/ the overreaction to the pot-smoking scene? she's not doing crack for pete's sake! ... Long before the media's obsession with celebrity scaled its current heights, MariaCallas commanded headlines and column inches equal to any of the jet-settingelite of her time. In those terms alone, and much as opera purists might flinchat the idea, she was the Madonna of her day. But that is only one reason why herlegend extends well beyond her place in the pantheon of great sopranos and solong after her death in 1977. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Maria Callas - Opera's Greatest Diva!
Opera's greatest diva. What can I say?A friend of mine made a comment to me one day about Maria's nose being "large" and I shot back, "Don't say anything about her nose, she looks like Lou."(Lou was my late wife's name.)My friend took my stinging remark in stride and proceeded to say only nice things about Maria from that point on.When I first saw Maria'spicture it was as if Lou was looking from the "other side" directly into my soul.Lou died over seven years ago.To this day, I literally shudder and weep when I see Maria's picture. While worlds apart in almost everything, Maria and Lou had their beauty in common.Maria was married to a very wealthy man. That allowed her to pursue her career.Still married, she later was the mistress of Aristotle Onassis. She lived for about three years after his death. She died of a heart attack - a depressed and broken woman. It was said by a person on this DVD who knew her, "When a person has a heart attack, the person must be faced with making a decision, even though the time is very short, as to whether to live or not....Maria must have decided not to live."My wife probably had that in common with Maria also.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Songs of Her Own Fate
If you are mad about Callas, this is something you don't want to miss. Like Busoni or else Heifetz, Callas is too much a legend to compare with: even someone with the stature of Schwarzkopf was obliged to give way.3-0 out of 5 stars 1 hour 16 minutes

4-0 out of 5 stars Incorrecttitle listed for this video
This video is actually called Metal Works 73-93, not World ;) and has not, to my knowledge, been transferred to the DVD format, as yet. The video is filled with rare and never before seen recordings and also includes outtakes from their first T.V. appearance in 1974.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good for fans
If you only like Priest a little, you might not want to get this. It's much more an interview video, talking to people like Sebastion Bach (ex-Skid Row) and members of Pantera and people who have known or have played with Priest in the last 20 years. There's clips of videos, and a few full music videos, and a couple live clips. It's really good if you absolutely love Judas Priest, but if you're looking for a "Behind The Music" type of video on Judas Priest, this isn't it. It tells a lot, and it's funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buried treasure
A scrapbook is, by definition, a subjective collection of memorabilia, so the appropriate title for this study of Judy Garland. Our unctuous narratorprefaces what is to follow by stating that previous efforts haveconcentrated on Judy's unhappy private life and ignored her prestigiousbody of work, so the aim then is to demonstrate that they don't make `emlike Judy anymore. What does follow however will not satisfy those seekinga definitive portrait. We see a lot of studio photos, stills, trailers forher films with Mickey Rooney, one for Meet Me in St Louis (in black andwhite!), a radio broadcast of her singing Over The Rainbow, her wardrobetests for Valley of the Dolls, and the Who and Look for the Silver Liningnumbers from Till the Clouds Roll By. (It amuses me to think that theexertion of her dancing in the Who number while pregnant combined with herpill-taking produces a Liza Minnelli). There is no footage of The Wizard ofOz, A Star is Born is only covered by the newsreel of the opening, nothingon The Pirate, Easter Parade, Get Happy or Summer Stock, no footage of herconcerts or TV series, and no mention of A Child is Waiting and I Could goon Singing. A still from Judgment at Nuremburg used out of context in thediscussion of her marriage to Vincente Minnelli is particularly irkesome. However, what redeems this video is the surviving footage from Annie GetYour Gun that Judy was fired from- I'm an Indian, Too and Doin' WhatComes Naturally. Indian appears the same as it did in the MGM doco When theLion Roars, though here the colours are blurier. Having not seen the BettyHutton eventual film, since it has been unavailable for years, I can onlygo by the cast recordings I have heard where the number is definitelylonger. The sequence here, as in the Lion Roars, feels abbreviated. It issaid that the number was incomplete, whether due to the removal of directorBusby Berkelely or because of Judy's troubles. Either way, it doescontradict the myth that Berkeley was not serving the material well, sinceit is remarkeable. Most of it is in one take and features more than 20dancers, which would explain the length of time taken to film it. The samething appears to be true for Doin' What Comes Naturally, which is precededand followed by dialogue. Here again Berkeley has used an uninterruptedtake. This time it is more obvious that Judy is not well. She wears a wigto disguise the fact that her hair was falling out, but despite hercondition and the fact that she did not get along with Berkeley, here isthe proof that they don't make `em like Judy anymore. Here is the essenceof Garland as performer, a showbiz avatar. The real tragedy of Garlandleaving MGM is what she may have achieved if she had been inclined to stay.In spite of the myth that she herself perpetuated, she wanted out of hercontract, when the studio agreed to let her go. The point is made that theevolution of her films with Rooney showed her eclipsing him, and she didsalvage her career by re-inventing herself as a live performer. But she wasalways a fine actor and the performance we see as Annie Oakley shows her ina very different light. Vincente Minnelli said that Hollywood had barelyscratched the surface with her, and this makes the footage saved for thisvideo all the more invaluable. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun romp
Now, this is a real anomaly:Mae West starring in a film based on a successful play she wrote back in 1926.So theoretically, this film could have been made into a silent movie, and here it is, turning up over 50 years later in 1978.And even in these more enlightened times, they didn't use the original title of Sex, calling it Sextette instead (although the opening credits put the first three letters into slight relief for those who might otherwise have missed it).
1-0 out of 5 stars Don't go West, young man
Mae West became a sex symbol not because of the way she looked but because of the way she spoke. Her unique delivery coupled with memorable, highly quotable double entendres ("Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just glad to see me?") were the highlights of her early-'30s movies. In SEXTETTE (1978), her final film, a fossilized, eighty-something Mae delivers the same kind of dialogue that made her famous way back when, and the result is a textbook example of how not to grow old gracefully.
4-0 out of 5 stars "How many honeymoons have you had?"
Mae West was in her mid 80s when she made "Sextette"--a musical based on one of her many plays. Mae West--one of the greatest sex symbols in the history of cinema--plays famous actress Marlo Manners. When the film begins Marlo is in London to marry Lord Barrington (Timothy Dalton) who will be her sixth husband. After the ceremony, the lovebirds are ushered to their posh hotel for the honeymoon, and Marlo's sneaky manager Dan Turner (Dom de Luise) makes all the final arrangements in the honeymoon suite. He fusses over the flowers and the huge ostentatious bed flown in from Hollywood for the famous coupling.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Delightful Slice ofMusical Americana
I just love this video. Not only are most of the very familiar favorites by Anderson presented (Sleighride, The Syncopated Clock, Fiddle Faddle, The Typewriter) but they are accompanied by little anecdotes from other musicians and conductors associated with him or his music, as well as members of his family, telling something of how these tunes were written.5-0 out of 5 stars A treat for All
Once Upon A Sleigh Ride is a delightful documentary about thegreat American Composer, Arranger and Musician, Leroy Anderson. His arrangements and compsitions played an important role in the success of the Boston Pops Orchestra and are artistically portrayed in this video. The music Of Leroy Anderson brings joy and happiness to his audiences. This video is a must for all music lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Behind all that MUSIC!
We know so little about the man who composed music that is so familiar to us!"Sleigh Ride"... "Blue Tango"... "the Syncopated Clock" (the theme for CBS' 'The Late Show' for over 25 years); these are just a few of the pieces that have become such an integral part of our American musical landscape. Finally, here is an entertaining and biographical source on the life and music of Leroy Anderson, the man who is said to have shaped the sound of the Boston Pops.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars who else but Madonna....
I can't imagine anyone but Madonna in this role. Many people criticize her acting ("such a drama queen," "overestimates her abilities," blah blah blah), but I thought she was pretty good in this one. Besides, her singing and dancing made up for anything else that could be wrong, in my opinion. Her voice is so distinctive, so strong, so closely fitting to emotions that the songs should envoke.
1-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly awful!!!!!!!
this movie is one of the worst movies i have ever seen. if i could have given it less than a one, i would have!!!!this movie is so horrific that i tried to watch it 3 times, but fell asleep every time.this is the first movie that has actualy put me to sleep because it was so boring!!!!!!!!!!!!! Madonna did a FABULOUS job, but aside from that, this movie sucked.

2-0 out of 5 stars They changed the lyrics
As someone who saw the original touring Evita in Austin during the 1980's, and practically memorized the original Broadway cast recording, I found this presentation of the work rather jarring and disappointing. Many of the lyrics have been changed or sanitized, perhaps to satisfy the censors in Argentina so the film could be shot there. The complete elimination of Peron's last mistress before Evita, and the transfer of her agonized lament "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" to Madonna, was a poor decision and changes the whole concept of that song.Overall, the orchestral arrangements have too "pop" a flavour, and disgard the lush original score. If you want to get a REAL feel for the impact of "Evita", get the original recording with Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin.

Convoluted, insipid, bereft of context in the few "facts" that inexplicably made it past the producers, this video should be promptly shifted to the "Fiction" (or, dare I say, "Comedy") section of your local video store. A NIGHTCLUB SCENE INSTEAD OF A CHANTEUSE, AN ARIA OR ANACT WAS PERFORMED EVEN WHILE THE MOVIE'S MAIN THEME WAS ONGOING.THEVIDEO SHOWS THE RESPECT LUCIANO SHOWS HIS PAST COLLEAGUES AND EVEN CURRENTONES. THE MODENSE SHOWING THEIR LOVE FOR MUSICALMOST AN OBSESSION.EARLIER FILM OF A VERY HANDSOME LUCIANO IN JAPAN AS 'IL DUCA MANTUA'EXTREMELY A CHOICE PIECE WORTH THE PRICE OF THE VIDEO ALONE. LUCIANO'SREVERENCE TO HIS LOCAL MODENSE, AND AS ALWAYS NEVER A DEROGATORY STATEMENTOF PAST OR CURRENT TENORS. FERNANDO SHOWING HIS FORTITUDE AND EVEN AEARLIER RADIO PERFORMANCE BY HIM WAS EXCELLENT. IN HIS EIGHTIES AND HESINGS EFFORTLESSLYTHE SCENES WITH LUCIANO SINGING RARELY PERFORMED ARIASWITH THE GREAT LEONE MAGIERA AT THE PIANO ARE PRICELESS. LEONE'S COMMENTSREGARD OPERATIC TENORS BEING VERY INFORMATIVE GIVES US ALL ANOTHERPROPECTIVE TO ENJOY THE NEXT OPERA OR CONCERT WE VIEW. I RECEIVED THISVIDEO AS A BIRTHDAY PRESENT AND VIEWED SAME SEVERAL TIMES. RINGRAZIARELISA, MATT, VANESSA, NICOLE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great history, great singing--Caruso to Pavarotti!
This video features film clips and recordings of the century's great Italian tenors--Caruso, Gigli, Schipa, di Stefano--and Pavarotti listens and discusses the unique character of each vocal style and how each singerchanged the expectations of tenors. In between the snippets of the past, Pavarotti, accompanied by Leone Maggiera, sings a series of songs thatillustrate the development of tenor vocal style more specifically.Maggiera also discusses vocal performance, and there are clips andrecordings of Pavarotti singing the Verdi Requiem at La Scala with VonKarajan and Rigoletto in a performance in Japan.Pavarotti's first vocalteacher, Arrigio Pola, discusses singing and what it requires, and thereare some marvelous visitswith the chorale of the town of Modena,Pavarotti's birthplace, and conversations with some chorale members aboutPavarotti's singing with the chorale as a young man.One sees the choralerehearsing as well as relaxing and talking about the ways in which musicand singing are a part of life in Modena. Pavarotti's father, who sangwith the chorale, had a superb tenor voice, and both Pavarottis join thechorale for a performance of a local song, a performance that is trulywonderful. This video is a must for all Pavarotti fans and for all thosewho love Italian opera. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Satch on DVD (so far), Swiss Krissly yours!
I would agree that this is by far the best DVD documentaty of Satch so far (the commendable Ken Burns' Satch segment are spread throughout the series, although quite well done). It handles all the major issues (including the rarely discussed issue of Louis Daniel Armstrong's foray into civil rights) and gives a pretty complete portrait of Louis Armstrong the man and what made him so special.
2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I strongly disagree with the other reviews. While the DVD is a good documentary of Louis Armstrong's life, it only has "imbedded" songs, and the menus are not set up to go to the songs, so you have to search for them.Unless you enjoy watching the documentary over and over, this is not way to enjoy his music. I wish I could view the songs without having to shift though a bunch of commentary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pops at his best
This biography is very well produced and is worth the money just for the performance scenes. I find myself watching certain segments over and over. Watching Louis and Jack Teagagarden performing Rockin' Chair or the older clips of a young Louis performing in Denmark are just pure joy. A clip from the movie New Orleans with Louis and Billie Holiday is a show-stopper. I absolutely love this DVD and highly recommend it to anyone who is a Louis Armstrong fan. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hot!
I just ordered this video, just got it in the mail today and just got done watching it. It's the first DT video I bought. It has pretty much everything you would want. The studio videos (interesting how they were trying to make "Another Day" their single, and "Pull Me Under" became the hit). It has lots of live videos that are well done- sometimes bands aren't as good live, or they aren't recorded well, but this is recorded in detail and DT is known as a great live band. It also has them talking about their music, shows devoted fans, and the guys clowning around. It looks like people really like to see those that they refer to as "GODS" just acting like regular people.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but...
To James LaBrie - stop running across the stage! It seems that whenever the band takes an instrumental section, which, as any Dream Theater fan knows, happens quite often, the singer finds himself at a loss. Many of the high-angle shots reveal a confused-looking LaBrie jogging from one end of the stage to another, a gesture that winds up just being funny, but not so much ha-ha funny.5-0 out of 5 stars Still the DEFINITIVE DT experience.
After almost ten (!) years, this video from the band's 1993 World Tour remains the definitive statement of Dream Theater in concert.I have converted countless unbelievers into the DT camp by simply inviting them over and popping this masterpiece on.This illicits the same response EVERY time:"Who ARE these guys?Wow."
