4-0 out of 5 stars Lou Reed
I really enjoyed this DVD, I have always liked Lou Reed's music but did not have much of an understanding of his history. This is a good documentary style DVD that gives you a feel for the man, the times and what influenced his music. Interviews with friends, colleagues and other artists give you a good feel for what he is about. If you like his music and want to know more about the most difficult person to ever interview this is well worth while.
5-0 out of 5 stars Split the Veins and Rip thru the Blood
Lou Reed's Rock n' roll Heart documentary is a sensitive and revealing look into the prince of darkness.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lou the Artist
This PBS video makes the case that Lou Reed is not just a guy who makes thrilling rock music. He is an Artist (with a capitol A) in the great modernist tradition who experiments with his life in order to test thelimits. This sounds forbidding, but this documentary is fun andunpretentious and exhilarating. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Very inspiring and informative video about the Pre-Fab Four!
Let's just say this... if you've ever wanted to learn about The Monkees, or maybe you were interested in listening to thier music, then this video is the best incentive... PERIOD! I've watched this video many, many times, and I tell you, it's still as interesting to watch as the first time. Hearing Davy, Mike, Peter and Micky talk about Jimi Hendrix, the making of "Head", the many musical performances of "Daydream Believer", "No Time", "Randy Scouse Git", etc. make this a must for any Monkees fan or even potential Monkees fan. And just as the credits come to an end... the viewer is rewarded with an extra 20 minutes or so of interviews.

5-0 out of 5 stars Be Patient...and You'll Be Rewarded!!!!
A great documentary that relives the Monkees story until 1997. The video isn't narrated. Instead, bits and pieces of interviews from several key players are strung togeter to tell the Monkee story. These "key players" include ALL FOUR of the Monkees, Don Kirshner, Ward Sylvester, and many others. One interesting facet of presenting the Monkees story in this way is that each of the Monkees' interpretation of what the Monkees were is a little different from the other. Also, many videos and clips from the show are included.5-0 out of 5 stars The Wonders of Monkee Land
An amazing conglomeration of all things Monkee.A knock-me-to the floor live performance of Listen to the Band and Mike singing, all on his own. What more could any real Monkee fan ask for?A video worth owning if not for the information, at least for the music, in its entirety, throughout the course of the film. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful film about two of America's important artists.
This review comes a little late but...better late than never. It is a marvellous film, VERY John Cage and Merce Cunningham whose collaboration led to some inspirational work among the American avant garde. It covers most of their collaborative lives and introduces some superb archival footage. We see John Cage of his "Lectures on Indeterminacy in Modern Music" days and many extracts from Merce Cunningham's productions going way back.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Marley and the Wailers: The Bob Marley Story
I can honestly say that this documentary is one of the best I have ever seen. Before I saw it, I would listen to Bob before my soccer games to calm my nerves. But after I saw this video, I have shared my view about it to all my friends. I wish I could get it in DVD soon.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect.Hypnotic and touching.
I've shown this video to friends who were not previously Marley fans. They are now.Marley's charisma is boundless, and the depth of his soul shines through in this video. The video itself is put together very well, mixing numerous interviews with Bob with some live concert and recording scenes, interviews with friends and family, and fantastic footage of the significant places and events of Bob's life. The narrator's beautiful voice and British/Jamaican accent are hypnotic, and lend significantly to the video's charm.Read more

Ms. Day should have received an Oscar for this.Miss Girl Next Door really showed what she was made of.If you like suspense, glamor and real singing and acting, this is the movie for you.The restoration is wonderful and the sound terriffic. One of my favorite movies of all times. Cagney is at the top of his game and he and Day work GREAT together. This movie was produced when all the big musicals were coming to an end. SHE SHOULD HAVE GOTTEN AN OSCAR, I'M TELLING YOU.

5-0 out of 5 stars are they nothing but hound dogs?
The demise of certain celebrities can be more compelling than their lives,to those drawn to the lure of the goddess Success. Elvis is probablythe definitive example of such appeal. Howard Hughes is another. This isprobably why I watched this episode of the 6 part series, but have noyearning to see the earlier ones. This is not a criticism of thefilm-makers since, for what it is, this documentary is fascinating viewing. It features no footage of Elvis, a few stills but otherwise members of his"Memphis Mafia", sitting around sharing anecdotes of the last 7years of Elvis' life. We aren't told the specifics of the 5 men's jobs, butthe manner in which these good ole boys speak creates the impression ofinformed (and private) confidences. The King's drug dependency ischronicled, evolving from his initial use of diet pills in the army, tosleeping pills, wake-up pills, and pain pills. All this medication wasprescribed, but prescribed by a doctor who later lost his licence topractice because of charges of over-medicating his patients. Thedrug-taking changed Presley's behaviour but the boys also claim it wasColonel Tom Parker's monomaniacal control over his client that eventuallyreduced him to a comatose lump of water retention. The tale of BarbraStreisand's offer for Elvis to co-star in her remake of A Star Is Born israised, and the boys believe that the Colonel vetoed it because he wasafraid of the influence Streisand would have on Elvis, since she is thoughtof as an independent entertainer, and a threat to Parker's sole management. Some might argue that having Jon Peters, her then lover, acting as managerfor Streisand altered the trajectory of her own career. (They laterdisagreed and separated over Barbra wanting to make Yentl). Whether or notElvis was capable of playing the role in Streisand's film, he was certainlywilling to try, as well as keen to tour internationally, and we are toldthat Parker killed the latter ambition since he was an illegal Dutch alienand afraid of being prosecuted. However Elvis was also toblame for hisfrustrations, since a sense of loyalty kept him tied to the Colonel, andfear made him unable to be without him. The boys want to convince us thatthey would have preferred Elvis to end his association with Parker, but onehas to wonder who was actually paying them, if Elvis was so dependent. Wehear ofElvis acting as an agent for the FBI, his collection of guns, hislittle-known philanthropy, and his physical and mental deterioration. Inthe face of accusations of opportunism, the boys deny that they were yesmen to Elvis' indulgences. Given the choice of either abandoning him to hisdrug abuse, or trying to moderate it, they say they chose to stay to help, though when Elvis eventually tired of their interference and fired them, their hurt could best be alleviated by writing a tell-all book "WhatHappened?" The boys claim they wrote it out of love, and that Elvisneeded something this dramatic as a cataylst for change. The book waspublished, in spite of Elvis' efforts to stop it. This makes the story theytell of another assistant who stole (presumably) pornographic polaroidsfrom Elvis' bedroom ironic, since the boys seem to take the higher moralstance against this person, yet then don't hesitate to betray their formeremployer. This hypocrisy is repeated in their condemnation of the TVconcert footage taken a few weeks before Elvis' death, but their argumentthat people didn't have to see Elvis in such a state, is silly when he wasperforming to live audiences. I gather that part 6 of this series coversthe details of Elvis' death even though it is titled "The Legend LivesOn", since it is not here.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will want to purchase all in the series.
I have purchased the entire series of "All The King's Men"tapes.I cannot explain how one can feel just watching the "MemphisMafia" sitting around together just talking and sharing the stories oftheir close life with Elvis.I laughed and I cried with these men.Onegets a very good understanding of why these men stayed with Elvis, thoughthe good and the bad. These men are very sincere and I believe, despitewhat others may have said, dedicated to and loved Elvis very much, andstill do as you will see.My very best to them. 3-0 out of 5 stars First Part Great...Last Part Depressing
This video starts off really great with lots of clips and, best of all, live music from their early days. The scenes of Brian Wilson being interviewed in his bed are a little strange.I wanted to give my young daughter this video as a Christmas present. She really likes the Beach Boys music.Parents be warned, there is a scene in the beginning where one of the Beach Boys is wearing a T-shirt that says "I'm a F------ Genius".As the video progresses it outlines their fall from popularity in the early 70's, the drug use, then Dennis Wilson's death. The scenes of Dennis Wilson singing "You Are So Beautiful" are depressing and troubling.Shortly afterward, he drowned in a boating accident.Still, there are some really great scenes of the band in the early days.If you are a hard-core Beach Boys fan, and I am (saw them twice in concert), I would recommend watch the first hour and forget the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!
I cannot begin to say how pleased I am with this video.I actually ordered two.One being the original 103 minute version and the other the 25th aniversary, very edited, edition.I highly recommend the original.I watched it first then watched the edited and couldn't believe all the stuff that was left out.I have to say it was some very crucial parts for me.The "Please Let Me Wonder" performance was incredible and I could not believe it was edited out.I've been a huge fan of the Beach Boys since I was in diapers and every minute I can spend listening to or watching them perform counts. The Endless Harmony video has a little more serious tone and was more informative but this video was so much fun to watch. Both videos are an absolute must have for a true Beach Boy fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT!!!
If you want to learn to play the trademark guitar licks and riffs of the Beach Boys music, then you should definitely buy this book.It has authentic note-for-note transcriptions to many of the Beach Boys Greatest Hits including Fun, Fun, Fun, Surfin U.S.A., California Girls, Surfin Safari, and many others! This book is very accurate and it is alot of fun to learn how to play guitar in the style of the Beach Boys!!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional New Performances of old songs
This a fine video document. Special for me because he re-records and performs one of my favoites "And When I Die" which would have fit so well on Smile to me. But obviously - not its correct place. The soundtrack cd is great and this is just another fine piece the second coming of Brian Wilson

4-0 out of 5 stars Weird, arty appreciation
What is this video? It is part first-person documentary, and part appreciation, made in the mid-90s when Wilson finally seemed to be finding the peace of mind that stays with him today. (His obviously devoted new wife stays beside him for much of the footage. Dr. Landy, who basically saved Brian's life according to Brian's 1991 autobiography, is now out of the picture and is never mentioned by name.) The entire thing is filmed in very arty, hard-lit black-and-white. There is no narration except for that of the inteviewees, and not much archival footage of the Beach Boys. What we get instead is Brian himself giving us brief, converstional summaries of periods of his life and songwriting inspiration, supplemented by comments from his mother, his ex-wife Marilyn, and his brother Carl (who died a few years after this film was made in the mid-nineties.) There are also some enlightening musical analysis from someone (I'm not sure who he is), and appreciative comments from fellow musicians ranging from Wilson collaborators Tony Asher and Van Dyke Parks, to David Crosby, John Cale, Tom Petty, and Linda Ronstadt. Wilson's daughters also comment briefly on their relationship with their Dad, and sing with him at the end. Throughout the film, certain excellent old songs of Brian are briefly discussed and then we get good footage of Brian performing the songs with a new studio band in Hollywood. (The performances, produced by Don Was, are very good, and fans might want to consider buying the soundtrack CD of this film. Fans expecting to hear the original Beach Boy recordings will not find them here.) Parts of the film feel like surreal arthouse filmmaking - silent closeups of Audree Wilson's face behind sunglasses as she gropes for words, odd footage of Brian and his mother and brother singing "In my Room" at the piano, Linda Ronstadt in a spotlight dressed in a puffy costume for some unknown theatrical show... Overall this is not a definitive documentary of Wilson's life or work by any means, but it does give you a good idea of why this odd man is so beloved and why his work is so important.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Restored Surprise
"Till the Clouds Roll By," was an M.G.M. musical that seemed to fall from favor with the studio as it has been released in pirated editions by many companies other than M.G.M.It was therefore a wonderful surprise to find the movie in mint condition in this outstanding technicolor DVD release.Although the story of Jerome Kern suffers from Hollywood-ization, it was much better than I remembered and the musical numbers (which is what it's really all about) are magnificent.

4-0 out of 5 stars MGM Stars In Their Glory
TILL THE CLOUDS ROLL BY has never been considered one of MGM's greatest musicals. The film is a somewhat syrupy biographical account of the life of Jerome Kern. In some ways this cannot be seen as a criticism. The film begins with the opening night of SHOWBOAT. After the performance Kern gets in a taxi and tells the driver his life story. Of course if he's telling the story it's going to be a nice account. And Robert Walker, who plays Kern, presents Kern as a likable guy and a hero we want to root for and hope will succeed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Till the Clouds Roll By1946
Till the couds Roll by begins with a glorious , musical-within-a-musical recreation of 1927 openingof Jerome Kern (1885-1945)

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay, not outstanding
While this DVD is interesting and well-produced, it doesn't measure up to other releases in the "Classic Album" series. The great bulk of screen time is spent on talking head interviews. That in itself would be okay, but they focus more on praising Jimi than discussing the music and the nuts and bolts of its creation. There is a lot of material that didn't make it onto this DVD - extensive alternate takes and outtakes - that has been broadcast on the radio. That material would have provided a fascinating supplement and insight into the Electric Ladyland creation process, and the brilliance behind the compositions of the songs. But instead this disc shows too much reminiscing about Jimi and mourning of his early death.
5-0 out of 5 stars Recounting The Journey
Classic Albums recounters the journey of the legendary music recordings.Classic Albums takes you a behind the scences look at one of jimi hendrix's most succesful albums. The story is told in rare archival film footage, music, and from a diary kept by a hendrix employee. Their are many great interviews from the members themself Mitch Mitchell, and Noel Redding as well as keyboard virtuoso Steve Windwood. I think the best part of the film is Eddie Kramer who engineered the electric ladyland sessions. This film is loaded with fascinating footage of Jimi Hendrix in the studio. I think from one perspective we can all appreciate how great Electric Ladyland really was.

1-0 out of 5 stars An irrelevant bit of fluff
Mario Lanza had an amazing voice and a tragic life and career.By all rights, his story should make for a fascinating video.Unfortunately, this effort is laughably inadequate and is nothing more than a poorly arranged pastiche of isolated facts, interviews and sound bites that do little to enshrine Lanza's talent or illuminate his life.Indeed, the viewer unfamiliar with Lanza'a biography would be little enlightened by the thin patchwork of loosely woven information presented here.Placido Domingo's ridiculous buffon hair style and comic accent only serve to enhance the aburdity of this production.
5-0 out of 5 stars The American Caruso

4-0 out of 5 stars What could have been?
not really -but what was, to the listener we heard a voice that can only be described as magical. had he been lost to opera and the "elite" would the likes of us have heard this magnificent voice-i doubt it. this man had it all and he shared that magic to millions -and still does. i was a mere 11years young when i first heard "Lanza" and now 50years later he can still reduce me to tears.no other tenor has done that before or since what came out of this dvd for me was that yes he was used by many -but loved by millions and that will continue no matter what was said by some twisted individuals because that voice will live on as each generation passes-i certainly do not think that the programme was trash indeed i felt quite emotional watching it.long may programmes be made about this fabulous artiste he deserves to live in our memories. ... This is definitely the video you want to watch if you are interested in the life and music of Bob Marley. It should really be released on DVD. Carribean Nights and the newer Rebel Music (much of which is seen here) are good, but this is best.Bob Marley's story is presented simply and elegantly without narration; his words and music tell the story best.

Okay, I know this film won all sorts of awards and yes, it is a good film, but it's not great.Firstly, I'm afraid I don't agree with the other reviewers:Horowitz's playing was not up to his usual stratospheric standard. The Scherzo is pretty bad in places, I'm sorry to say, particularly in the recapitulation of the main theme. The Mozart sonata is okay but the last movement is too fast and contains a few clinkers (even Horowitz says disconsolately at the end of it "I cannot do better").Some of the pieces are (dare I say it) uninteresting, for example the Nouvelette and the Consolation (how many more times do we have to hear that piece? The best Horowitz VHS recording of it is on Horowitz in Vienna). Then the picture quality and camera work are not great and, crucially, the sound quality is terrible. The piano sounds very tinny and harsh, maybe because Horowitz had insisted on having it calibrated that way, maybe because the recording equipment was not up to scratch. This makes the Mozart Sonata sound so awful that I can't listen to it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ghiaurov is awesome!
Justly hailed as one of the greatest voices of all time, Bulgarian bass Nicolai Ghiaurov has a tremendously rich repertoire, of which only a glimpse is shown on this video. This extraordinary man is known forkeeping a low profile, so to speak; even though there is an immenserecording legacy (still growing), there is little of the usual hypeassociated with great artists. In this video we briefly see his journeysaround the world and his getting ready for a performance or interactingwith great conductors (Karajan, Abbado), and we see a kind, soft-spoken,modest person, so different from the images he created on stage.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very "down to earth" superstar
This movie tells the story of a humble, honest and unassuming man with tremendous success around the world. It is actually an interview with Carreras where we are shown clips from his adventurous life; clips from opera performances as well as concerts and recitals, all the way from the very start and up till the point where this video was made - around 1992.
5-0 out of 5 stars A great voice as well as a great man
I have been an admirer of Jose Carreras for many years and this is a wonderful portrait of the master's life and art. It covers the early triumphs at Covent Garden and the New York City Opera to his struggle withLeukemia and to the courageous comeback concerts in Barcelona andSaltzburg. I recommend this video to any aspiring singer, music lover andadmirer of Mr Carreras. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not historically accurate, but highly enjoyable
I saw this in the theater when it was first released and was enthralled with the music.Like most "biopocs" this one is long on entertainment and short on authenticity. The recreations of Romberg's famous shows, with top stars of the day, are worth the price of admission all by themselves.Add in one of the funniest routines ever filmed (Ferrer's acting out of "jazzadoo", good performances by all the main actors and some of the best music ever written (in my humble opinion) and you have a great show.If you want to learn the real facts about Sigmund Romberg, read about him.If you want a good movie, rent this one.

3-0 out of 5 stars Uneven (like most bios), but not without its rarities.
This film is a curiosity more than anything else. I rented it years ago and found it uneven at best. Like most of MGM's alleged 'composer biographies,' it distorts the details of the composer's actual life (in this case, Broadway stage/operetta afficionado Sigmund Romberg) and hangs all of his magnificent songs on an all-star coatrack. And there lies the attraction: seeing Gene Kelly in his only on-screen appearance with real-life brother Fred; seeing Jose Ferrer's bride Rosemary Clooney in her fresh-faced beauty and ear-delicious voice; watching grande dame soprano Helen Traubel sing "Aufwiedersen" to a dying Merle Oberon; and most of all seeing Ann Miller blend the Charleston with her signature tap dancing (I'm not kidding) and superbabe Cyd Charisse in probably the single most erotic dance performed on film: an Arabian Nights-influenced duet with James Mitchell to the song "One Alone." And how she moves in that all-lace, form-fitting gown is anyone's guess.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not So Deep
I'm conducting a wake for Rosemary Clooney(Born May 23, 1928.Died June 30, 2002.) I read "Girl Singer: an autobiography" and got the conveniently packaged "Songs from the Girl Singer: a musicalautobiography " CD set. Like Girranimals, the similarly titled pieces have the same picture on the front so that the purchaser will know that they go together.I heartily recommend both. But I can only give a mid-depth recommendation to "Deep In My Heart." Perhaps this is because of reading Rosemary's book and determining that the Star, Jose Ferrer, was a real-life scoundrel to her. And it may also have to do with my unfamiliarity with the Sigmund Romberg oeuvre. The joy and spectacle of the "Specialty numbers" with guest stars including Gene Kelley, Ann Miller (how does she even WALK in those super-high stilletos - let alone do that dazzling dance?,)Merle Oberlin's "Camille"-like turn, Ferrer's Jolson-esque "Jazza Do" synopsis, and the piece de resistance: the "Mr. And Mrs." song and dance duet by Ferrer and his real-life newlywed bride, Rosemary Clooney, make this an Oldie worth renting, butI'm not going to rush to buy a copy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Barnum DVD
Michael Crawford--showing his evolution from "Something Funny" and "Hello" and before "Phantom"--"does everything"!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Songs are veru catchy!
Michael Crawford is in this wonderful musical Barnum! He is really fun to watch! He makes me laugh all the time. This is my first Stage production of him in the title role. In 1987 he was in Phantom. Once again he is the title role. My favorite songs are:
5-0 out of 5 stars I "Guarantee" You'll Enjoy This Show,Really!!!:o)
I have read many "5 Star" reviews on Amazon, I bought the CD or DVD or VHS, and found it to be"so-so"....maybe 3 1/2 stars. So, I am skeptical about Amazon reviews. But,in this case, the reviewers are "right on" when they praise this "Musical". And, this rendition stars a famous actor/singer, Michael Crawford. He is very good or even "excellent".You might want to buy it "used" but even at the "new" price, it is worth paying for... $30 is cheaper than one ticket to a show these days, correct!? You'll enjoy it,I "guarantee" it!.....:o) Email:boland7214@aol. ... Read more

This book is very accurate and it is alot of fun to learn how to play guitar in the style of the Beach Boys!!! ...
