5-0 out of 5 stars "Wanda Landowska and the Revival of the Harpsichord"
Needless to say I was very excited about the production of this video because it was based almost entirely upon my Ph.D. dissertation!I am featured in the documentary about six times in my red vest and white blouse talking about Landowska and her amazing feats as the story is woven in and out around that.I think that Attie, Goldwater, and Pontius did an excellent job with the historical footage and with getting Denise Restout to cooperate.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Does a good job at picking up on where "Exposed"left off
KISS'"Extreme Closeup" documentary is pretty entertaining. I liked it a lot.As I already mentioned in the headline for this review,it does a good job picking up on where the "Exposed" video/DVD left off. You get behind the scenes interviews from mostly Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley talking about the history of the band, the fans and other bands they encountered(as well as some of the musicians they had hired when Ace Frehley and Peter Criss were no longer with the band),and some pretty good and interesting stories. Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer have small parts in this video, but they are to be found in here, and you get to learn interesting stories from when they joined the band and also from when they were kids(you also get to hear stories like that from Gene and Paul)so that makes this video another good reason for why you should buy it.I also enjoyed the video footage of KISS in concert from the 70's and briefly into the 80's as well as some of the music videos from the 70's,80's,and two videos off of the "Revenge" album(the videos for "Unholy" and "I Just Wanna")...however,my biggest complaint with this video is that while it is still very good, some of the footage of KISS live and in concert and some of their music videos are only excerpts...I know that sometimes bands/video producers have to chop off half of a song, music video, etc. for a video/CD to have more space on either the video or the CD,but WHY did they have to chop off the last few seconds of the music video for "Let's Put The X In The Sex"???!!! Overall,a very good documentary,it is a good place to turn if you want to learn more about KISS and see some of their classic music videos and live footage of the band from the 70's and 80's,you get to see some pretty cool behind the scenes pictures in this video, and I have one more thing to say:Someone contact Yahoo! Launch(if you can,I couldn't find an address for them to send in my request)and tell them to put more KISS videos on there!(the ONLY KISS video on that site is the video for "Psycho Circus",a very good video, but KISS fans who use Launch want more than just one KISS video!

5-0 out of 5 stars Still kicking ass after all these years....
This documentary is by far the best KISS video out on the market today... I'm waiting for it to be released on DVD like KISS X-posed was a couple years ago. I was 9 years old when this was released and have watched this video so many times over the years that I practically have the whole thing memorized, especially all of those wonderful Paul and Gene one-liners! I'm now 21 and still love watching this video, I had to buy my own copy after wearing out my mom's. The Revenge era KISS is my favorite as this is the lineup and album that I grew up listening to, and it outshines any of the 80s KISS albums by far (even though I love those albums too). The 70s KISS concert footage, 80s and 90s videos, and band member interviews make this a KISS video that any fan can't be without.

5-0 out of 5 stars X-Treme Closeup
This video is still enjoyable to watch after all these years. This has the terrific videos from "Hot in the Shade" & is an in depth interview with Gene and Paul with a tiny bit from Bruce and Eric.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Emmy-Nominated Video Oddity Inspired by a Great Album
I bought this video for two reasons: 1) my abiding love of Kathleen Battle, and 2) the album of the same name is, I believe, one of the best classical albums released in the last decade. However, despite these things I didn't know what to expect because a) before perusing Amazon, I didn't even know there was a BAROQUE DUET video and b) there were no customer reviews for me to refer to. Well, rest assured that this video is almost as good as the CD (I say "almost" because some of the arias on the album are not featured here). Basically, this video chronicles the making of the album, from rehearsal through recording. It's done like a movie rather than like a documentary where there tends to be a lot of voice-over narration. It's a fascinating document as both Wynton Marsalis and Kathleen Battle are artists of the highest caliber who happen to be very interesting as people as well. Of course, I'd heard of Ms. Battle's "temperament" and her dismissal from the Metropolitan Opera House, but I promise you'll be seduced by her charm and it's apparent that it is not an act at all. There is absolutely no diva antics here. In fact, she is downright humble. In other words, donot let her reputation dissuade you from purchasing any of her recordings or videos. (And if this is added incentive, we are privy to a visit Ms. Battle pays to the neighborhood and church in which she spent her formative years, and we get to hear her sing a solo in church. Personally, I was filled with delight and something like religious fervor after hearing the song.) And Wynton is a laugh and a half, he speaks his mind in the highly stuffy world of classical music and thus is set apart from it. All this in addition to some of the most virtuosic trumpet-playing (I've) ever heard. There is a genuine chemistry between Ms. Battle and Mr. Marsalis that is evident on disc and in this video, theirs is an incredibly synchronistic partnership. This video shows them trying to meet the demands placed upon them by baroque composers in rehearsal and recording and then exceeding them in performance. (Yes, the last 15 minutes of the video is a mini-concert of the pieces we've seen them honing in the studio.) Another point of interest is we are shown Ms. Battle practicing with her vocal coach and Mr. Marsalis receiving advice from a man I assume is a mentor. Get this, do not delay. Otherwise, you WILL be kicking yourself when the label is "out of stock" and no more are being produced! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE American: a hero, an icon, a human being
Being still a young man, 21, I can vividly remember my high school days, and my hateful relationship with the "dreadfully boring" Huckleberry Finn.
5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT A "KEN BURNS" PRODUCTION!!!
Okay, folks - Ken Burns DID NOT produce this production.MARK TWAIN: A MUSICAL BIOGRAPHY is a film that was made of the musical production of THE MARK TWAIN MUSICAL DRAMA in Elmira, NY.Jane Iredale and William Perry wrote the lyrics and music to this musical. If you like musicals and enjoy the varied works of Mark Twain - this film is for you.If you want KEN BURNS' version - go somewhere else.WOW!Even Amazon has posted the incorrect review to this page!!Ken Burns doesn't do "Musical Biographies".Jane Iredale and Bill Perry DO musical biographies . . . VERY WELL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to a great writer
I use this film every year in my American literature class to introduce my students to Mark Twain before they read Huckleberry Finn. My students stay glued to the television during the week that we watch the videos. I find it to be a far more effective introduction to Twain than I could ever give. And I love rewatching it every year. It never fails to make me tear up! This film brings Twain to life in a way that allows students to see him as a human being rather than as just another author to add to our list. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars SHORT! but entertaining!
This video is a very diverse collection of Glenn Gould recordings. In addition to Glenn playing the piano solo, it features his portrayals of his characters Sir Nigel, Myron Chianti, and Karl-Heinz Klopweisser, an oddpiece called Scotch Rhapsody were we get to hear Glenn sing (not just hisusual humming!), some unfortunately low quality 1957 footage of himconducting a Mahler piece, Bach's BWV 1017, with Yehudi Menuhin on violin;and the classic "So You Want to Write a Fugue". Altogether, thereare 13 selections, each different and unique. The only shortcoming to thisvideo is that it is quite short... 46:16. Considering it's price, this wasdisappointing to me. As a sampler album, it could ... and should ... havebeen longer.

5-0 out of 5 stars A welldone mixture of Glenn Gould's various media pursuits.
This video was excellent! incredible! amazing!brilliant! especially the part where ole' Glenn sings some ol' Scot rhapsody dressed as a ladykiller. It's also got "So You Want To Write A Fugue" as it appeared originally on the CBC television broadcast from 1958, which is one of the funniest things I've ever heard in mylife. "So you want to write afugue/You got the nerve to write a fugue/You got the urge to write afugue". Also represented is Gould's interpretations of a number ofcomposers, such as Bach, Beethoven, Scriabin (check outhis playing on this), as well as him conducting a Mahlerpiece. One of the mostenlightening things was Gould'sdeconstruction of a Strauss opera using the themes from Electra to detailhis somewhat bizarre and obtuse extrapolations. In a word - COOL.Okay that's one word. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 2 thumbs up
Arguably THE most talented musician of the 20th century, Jacqueline du Pre is of course magical in this video from start to finish. Her interpretation of the Elgar Concerto will go unmatched for this century andmore to come. The cello, an extension in her body...as she cradles it andfills it with emotion.Elgar himself mighthave been moved to tears bythe end of the performance...his masterpiece has found its finestinterpretaion.Jackie was not only talented, but beautiful and adown-to-earth person.Had she lived, she'd be the premiere cellist of theworld over.HOwever, her recordins with transcend time and continue todazzle/bewilderlisteners from coast to coast. How at such a young age,any person could have such complete understanding of music. An icon.

5-0 out of 5 stars This the greatest cello virtuoso of our time, don't miss it!
The single most beautiful cello concerto has had no better performance.Du Pre was the most powerful player I have ever seen.Give this zenith of Concerti a shot.

1-0 out of 5 stars A total Bore
I just wasted $15 bucks on an absolute piece of trash video.I love Creed and its music.I consider myself a big fan, and foolishly bought this video dispite the warning on Creed's home page about the poor quality of this video.I watched 15 minutes and had to turn it off because it was SO incredibly boring. No concert footage and no Creed music. All they show is still shots of one of their concerts, and they use the same 10 pictures over and over and over and over again. Then there are interviews with bar owners, DJs, and their pre-fame sound guy, all saying how the band "was so incredibly special" and they all miraculously knew Creed was going to make it big.Yeah, right.Don't bother buying this video.

1-0 out of 5 stars Creed: Unauthorized
Even if you're a huge fan, do not buy this video. It's a cheap cash in on one of America's up and coming rock bands. No music, interviews from obscure angles and second rate djs voicing opinions will have you reachingfor the off button long before you reach the end.

1-0 out of 5 stars From the Creed Website...
I was on the Creed website and saw this. I thought that the following quote from their site would be useful to anyone who is thinking about buying the video. "Please note: The home video Creed--Riding on theEdge is not authorized or endorsed by Creed or Wind-up Records, nor hasCreed or Wind-up supplied the producers of this video any content. Manyfans have been dissatisfied with content and the quality of the video.Additionally, there is no music by Creed on the video. Creed is planning anofficial home video release later in the year. 5-0 out of 5 stars John Lennon in His Own Words
"Imagine" is a feature length documentary about John Lennon's life, centred around the "Imagine" recording sessions, but also featuring footage from the Beatle era, his marriage with Yoko, his "lost weekend" period and a few home movies, all the way to the year of his death. It uses John's own voice as narration, taken from the hours of interviews he did throughout his life, and features alternate and remixed versions of his songs as a soundtrack of sorts, as well as interviews from all sorts of people, from Sean Lennon to George Martin. Though it's not as detailed (or as long) as say "The Beatles Anthology", I still think it is a really fine look at John Lennon's life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Captures the Essence of John Lennon's Life
"Imagine" is a warm beautiful celebration of John Lennon's life as told in his own words and the words of those who loved him and supported his mission. His idealism is prominent, but so is his charismatic personality and comedic interchange with the media.
3-0 out of 5 stars A HAUNTING PORTRAIT IN LENNON'S WORDS (PLUS 36 SONGS!)

1-0 out of 5 stars WTF?
I am a HUGE KoRn fan, so you can only imagine how POed I was when I saw this. The video doesn't even have the band, except for one part, which is 1/2 a mile away from the band. Plus, the host tries to be tough and cool by cursing, but he ends looking like a total jack-ass. I would only recommend this to the most die-hard KoRn fan who wants everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, anyone else hould just leave this DVD on the shelves and boycott it!

1-0 out of 5 stars What was this?
I love KoRn, i am probaly one of there bigest fans. So i wanted to get every dvd/CD related to them. Then i bought it. It told me all the same info that i already knew before. I though it would at least have 1 interview with them, well it dosen't. I would rate this dvd lower than a 1 star but i can't. DO NOT BUY THIS DVD!!!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars WHAT THE HELL?
I love KoRn and thats why i bought this DVD, but honestly guys, all this DVD is, is some punk trying to swear as much as he can cuz he's trying to be cool, as soon as the DVD starts the guy is standing there (...) screaming ARE YOU READY? I SAID ARE YOU (...) READY? and as the dvd progresses just proves my point that he is an an idiot even further, if you want a KoRn DVD get Deuce, it's funny, detailed and Very imformative, it would have at least six hours worth of stuff to see, i highly recommend that dvd, it is well worth the money and is One Hundred percent Official and Authorized by KoRn themselves, i am serious when i say this dvd doen't even contain a song by KoRn let alone an Interview or even a damn appearance by korn at all, all thats there are pictures of them that are repeatedly shown throughout the dvd. with that said people do have different poinions on this dvd so there is a chance that you may like it and if you don't (like most of us)you can just put it on your shelf with your other KoRn stuff just to make it look as if if you have a bigger KoRn collection (that's what i did lol!) ... 1-0 out of 5 stars utterly useless
one of the most boring things I've ever seen. Don't expect much music here - it's just a pretty dull documentary with pretty boring interviews. even being a fan, I yawned. but I guess if you're a true fanatic then you'll probably enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yield to a great rock DVD
Shot entirely in their soon to be demolished (2006) practice studios during the rehearsals for their "Yield" album, "Single Video Theory" shows you Pearl Jam at work. This is a treat, not just for PJ fans. See a band at the top of their game collaborating, jamming, and shaping a great rock album. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not trying to make a difference
Pearl Jam's Single Video Theory isn't what the title implies. There's no videos or any talk of videos, what this film is however, is a glimpse into what the members of PJ think of the songs off of the Yield release. Yield is one of my favorite CDs by Pearl Jam so to hear each song at least partially performed is gratifying enough. Hearing each member talk about the songs is something that I like about this DVD, I also like the fact that it's not just Ed talking, if anything Mike, Stone, and Jeff get more camera time. To know there's no real power struggle going on is a good pick-me-up. The sound quality is as if you're simply listening to the CD and Ed nails every lyric. To hear every song off Yield played was good because most of my favorites aren't songs I've ever heard PJ play live. Take No Way for instance, they don't play this song very much at all so to hear even the part of it they do play is good enough for me. Same goes for Brain Of J. Two of the songs played best were All Those Yesterdays and Given To Fly but those songs are always played with such emotion that it's hard to screw them up. I really like the way the band describes Given To Fly, I feel it gives the song that much more meaning. In Hiding has an interesting backstory to it and is played in full much to my delight. In Hiding is one of those songs that doesn't really take off till the chorus, so I'm glad they did the song justice and played it in it's entirety.

3-0 out of 5 stars First Part Great...Last Part Depressing
This video starts off really great with lots of clips and, best of all, live music from their early days. The scenes of Brian Wilson being interviewed in his bed are a little strange.I wanted to give my young daughter this video as a Christmas present. She really likes the Beach Boys music.Parents be warned, there is a scene in the beginning where one of the Beach Boys is wearing a T-shirt that says "I'm a F------ Genius".As the video progresses it outlines their fall from popularity in the early 70's, the drug use, then Dennis Wilson's death. The scenes of Dennis Wilson singing "You Are So Beautiful" are depressing and troubling.Shortly afterward, he drowned in a boating accident.Still, there are some really great scenes of the band in the early days.If you are a hard-core Beach Boys fan, and I am (saw them twice in concert), I would recommend watch the first hour and forget the rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible!!
I cannot begin to say how pleased I am with this video.I actually ordered two.One being the original 103 minute version and the other the 25th aniversary, very edited, edition.I highly recommend the original.I watched it first then watched the edited and couldn't believe all the stuff that was left out.I have to say it was some very crucial parts for me.The "Please Let Me Wonder" performance was incredible and I could not believe it was edited out.I've been a huge fan of the Beach Boys since I was in diapers and every minute I can spend listening to or watching them perform counts. The Endless Harmony video has a little more serious tone and was more informative but this video was so much fun to watch. Both videos are an absolute must have for a true Beach Boy fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is GREAT!!!
If you want to learn to play the trademark guitar licks and riffs of the Beach Boys music, then you should definitely buy this book.It has authentic note-for-note transcriptions to many of the Beach Boys Greatest Hits including Fun, Fun, Fun, Surfin U.S.A., California Girls, Surfin Safari, and many others! This book is very accurate and it is alot of fun to learn how to play guitar in the style of the Beach Boys!!! ...
