5-0 out of 5 stars The Clock (1945)
This is one of the most beautiful and heart wrenching movies ever made. You are lulled into the movie from the beginning. I saw this on Turner Classic Movies the other night and was amazed at how beautiful it is. There is no swearing in this movie, no sex, no violence, just old fashioned romance and the display of the powerful need for love in human beings. Judy Garland is a great actor and it is directed well by Vincente Minnelli. Movies today are sick, perverted and immoral and they feed the moral decay of this once great nation. The Clock is a must see movie from better more hopeful days.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Wartime Romance with a Luminous Garland in a "Musical"-Feeling Non-Musical
A sincere piece of treacle just before the end of WWII, this 1945 romantic drama features a never-lovelier Judy Garland in her only non-singing role during her golden MGM years. Even though she is a talented enough actress without having to vocalize, she is in a movie that feels like a musical in its cinematic sensibilities - swooning romanticism, quicksilver plot turns and broad stock characters. That shouldn't come as a surprise since her then-fiancé Vincente Minnelli directed and Arthur Freed produced, both much better known for their musicals of the period. Still, they have made a sweet film with worthwhile stylistic touches such as the use of long zoom shots in maneuvering through the swarming crowds in the subway and train stations and the screen panning used in showing the mini-dramas of background characters we never see again.
5-0 out of 5 stars Let's make a stop in the War!
During a very brief withdrawal a soldier will meet, woo and wed a girl before shipping out. A romantic drama typical of that age but with a striking message beneath the script. Follow your bliss before it may be late. Judy Garland is wonderful in this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rabbit Almost Stole the Movie!
I don't want to repeat what all the other reviewers have said.I know that when I went to see this movie when it first came out ( yes, I am "that" old ) I didn't have too much hope of it being a good movie.I mean it was Jerry Lewis without Dean Martin! How good could it be?Well turns out it was an excellent movie with an excellent performance by Jerry Lewis.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Movie Has Magic!
Although Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made a great team, this movie, The Geisha Boy, shows Jerry's true talent solo.4-0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem of Jerry Lewis; A Japanese Fan Can Testify
Owing to Eddie Murphy remake, "The Nutty Professor" comes to our mind first as Jerry Lewis's most representative work, but it also tends to overshadow his other neglected gems, one of which is here, "The Geisha Boy."Despite its now corny title, the film has still a lot to offer for our laugh.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Feel good nostalgia!
I can remember seeing this movie at our theatre downtown during the summers. Our local paper always had coupons we could turn in with a milk bottle cap and 25 cents to see movies while our moms shopped.Safe at Home was one of my all-time favorites."Roger Maris . . . Mickey Mantle . . . gosh . . . gee"It's a wonderful movie of a time less difficult and harried. My son, who's 22, is a huge Mantle fan and I can hardly wait for him to see the movie.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgic Fun
This film really plays like an episode of "Leave It To Beaver" because of the situation little Bryan Russell gets himself into. He tells his friends that Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris were his pals when he used to live in New York. Now living in Florida Russell has to figure a way to get over to see Mantle and Maris in spring training to save the day. William Frawley plays their New York Yankee's coach. Do they come to Russell's rescue or not? This is a good family film.

3-0 out of 5 stars The M & M Boys Go To Hollywood
Maris and Mantle were the greatest "one-two punch" in sports history since Ruth and Gehrig (and they didn't have the alliteration!) when this picture was made. Around that time they made a cameo in the Rock Hudson-Doris Day comedy "That Touch of Mink" so this was a natural progression.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Start Spreadin' The News: Yanks King Of New York
Best of the Yankees World Series dvds. Great Jeter content. Stellar revival footage of past Subway Series. A little insight on just how important this series was, Derek Jeter is quoted as saying "Fans approach me on the street and tell me to forget about the three rings on my fingers because this is the one that counts" and it certainly did, but so did all the others.

First of all I want to say that I am a HUGE baseball fan, but I am not very fond of the Yankees. When I first started following baseball, at age 9, I thought I might like them. But as time passed I started to see what rich, snobby sell-outs they were, and how bad they are for baseball. 1-0 out of 5 stars The Series baseball did not want

When asked to comment during Barry Bonds's 2001 pursuit of the single-season home run record that he himself shattered in 1998, Mark McGwiresaid, "I was lucky enough to reach 70, and now they're all talking about it like it's a piece of cake." It wasn't for Bonds, it wasn't for McGwire, and it certainly wasn't for Roger Maris, who in 1961 competed with his much morepopular teammate Mickey Mantle to break Babe Ruth's benchmark of 60 home runs.Originally broadcast on HBO, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The M&M Race for the Babe's Single Season Record, SUBERB MOVIE!
The Greatest race between two baseball players is told with the direction of big Yankees fan Billy Crystal & suberb performaces from Thomas Jane as #7 Mickey Mantle & Barry Pepper as #9 Roger Maris in the Yankee's 1961 season as the two marvels race to beat Babe Ruth's 1927 single season record of 60 homers. It's a suberb, enthralling, entertaining movie of America's past Time, It's a grand slam triumph & one of most accurate baseball movies ever made. If you liked "Field of Dreams" & "the Natural" witness baseball history at it's finest in the movies with "61*""ROGER!" "ROGER!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Baseball near the end of innocence.
Most films that try to capture the significance of a sporting event from a by-gone era suffer because they fail to attach it to any historical context. Upon first view, I thought that "61*" was somewhat guilty of that. It was an unfair opinion because at that time I had just finished watching "Seabiscuit" and "Miracle", both of which are slightly superior films. Now, however, I've had a change of mind after a second viewing. Billy Crystal has done an enormous job in capturing the M&M boys of 1961.
5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC
I have never before been a fan of baseball. In fact, up until seeing 61, I'm ashamed to say I disliked the sport. All the tabacco chewing, rump grabbing and testosterone parading wasn't to my taste. Well ladies and gentlemen, never more. I am THRILLED that a completely different view of baseball was unveiled to me. What's even more surprising is that a movie did the unveiling- This movie. Aside from the acting (brilliant) and a story that sweeps you to your feet like an avid, life-long fan, "61" has a deeper meaning than all the greed that is aspired to in sports today. It's about something more important than money, more important than fame. Roger Maris was crucified in the press before making baseball history and hitting lucky number 61- but he didn't care. He owed something to himself, to his own dream, and he did it. Goddamn it he did it! I found myself jumping up and down and shrieking towards the end of the movie. I couldn't believe it. Here is one of those rare movies that stays with you days after you watch it. After seeing it, I went online and did a little research on the real Roger Maris and Mickey Mantle. It's astonsihing- the actors they chose look so much like them. HUGE kudos to Billy Crystal! "61" really is fantastic.

4-0 out of 5 stars You gotta have Wa
The biggest surprise of "Mr. Baseball" is not that it's actually a pretty good movie, which it is, but that it's one of the few entries in the "Wacky Japan" genre that delivers an honest portrayal of Japan and the Japanese people, as well as as the awkwardness of being a foreigner in Japan, instead of stereotype-ridden nonsense like "Gung Ho!" and "Lost in Translation."
1-0 out of 5 stars baseball at it's worst
so that's what happened to selleck's career.this is a horrible movie with bad swings, bad acting and a trashy love story that pretty much demeans all women especially those that are japanese.do yourself a favor and don't waste your money or an hour and a half of your life watching this "plotline" unfold.

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!
The working title for this film was "Tokyo Diamond". Tom Selleck, late of TV's "Magnum PI",is an American baseball player who is transferred to a Japanese team after the American team officials believe that Jack(Selleck) is unsatisfactorily playing. In Japan,he meets beautiful Hiroko and falls in love with her. Hiroko ends up joining Jack in going back to the United States. Hiroko's father owns the Japanese team that Jack plays for. This is somewhat like the real-life union of Yoko Ono and the late John Lennon. After success in Japan,Jack is welcomed back to his American team. Dennis Haysbert had a supporting role in this film, probably in part because he appeared in the 1989 Paramount film MAJOR LEAGUE. All-American Jack couldn't quite adjust to the customs of the Japanese. Great film! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For the first time a Canadian team wins the World Series
In the 1992 World Series the Toronto Blue Jays won what would be the first of two consecutive championships, while the Atlanta Braves lost for the second Fall Classic in a row. This would be the second of four titles the Braves lost in the World Series during the decade of the 1990s, although they would win the next time back (this tied the effort by the New York Giants in the 1910s, when John McGraw's team actually lost three Octobers in a row). However, when this six game series was over the headline was that for the first time a team outside of the United States, as well as a team with an African-American manager, had won the World Series for the first time.Read more

    Editorial Review

In years to come 1998 will be remembered as one of the finest in the history of baseball. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa slugged their way into the record books, and David Wells pitched a perfect game. Roger "The Rocket" Clemens reached the giddy heights of the 3,000 plateau. Cal took a day off. And then there were the Yankees. Fittingly, it was the Bronx Bombers who penciled in the final emphatic exclamation point of the season, by sweeping the San Diego Padres in four games. A season that saw them brush aside all opposition while on their way to 125 wins would have been incomplete without this victory. The official Major League Baseball video recaps the regular season of the Padres and Yanks, before following them through the playoffs, and then on to the World Series. The inspired San Diego team, led admirably by the ageless yet priceless Tony Gwynn, Kevin Brown, and Wally Joyner, encountered a Yankee team too experienced and too deep, from wily veterans like David Cone and Paul O'Neil to brilliant youngsters like Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera. The 1998 Yankees were a team on a mission from start to finish, a feeling epitomized in the messiah-like stature of Joe Torre, who himself said that getting to the final hurdle simply wasn't good enough were they to come away empty-handed. In a fitting testament to professionalism and team unity, the Yankees established themselves in 1998 as perhaps the greatest team in any sport, ever. Exclusive interviews, behind-the-scenes footage (never seen before on TV), and "wired for sound" players from every game make this video a must for any baseball fan. Read more

This was a good recapp of famous scenes from the Olympics. The video highlights how a lot of the Olympic traditions began and how the modern Olympics were restarted. It takes you through three hours of the greatest Olympic moments.I was a little dissappointed that we didn't hear the orginal commentary from the games, along with Bud Greenspan. It also didn't show enough of some of the more famous Olympians - there was not much on Greg Louganis or Jesse Owins, or Nadia Comaneci. Overall I liked this video but I was a little dissappointed.
