5-0 out of 5 stars Pure gold for any tap enthusiast
This was one of the first videos I got a hold of when I started tap dancing & I'm still picking up new steps every time I see this video. It is one of the few videos containing the dancing of these greats. All in all, a wonderful display of different tap styles with 3 of the best tappers ever, In my opinion.Read more

Editorial Review

Tchaikovsky's timeless Yuletide ballet is presented in an all-new movie version with as much eloquence as one would find in a live stage production. Replete with gorgeous costumes and scenery, George Balanchine's production, adapted by Peter Martins, features the New York City Ballet with narration by Kevin Kline. From the moment the Nutcracker prince winds toymaker Drosselmeier's life-sized dolls, viewers are ushered into the captivating story of a little girl's Christmas Eve fantasy of beauty, magic, and sugarplums. While several versions of this beloved tale are available in video, this one is distinguished for the magnificent performances of a large cast of young ballet dancers from the School of American Ballet. While Culkin lends his star-studded name, that is all he lends in what is mostly a wooden performance (he often appears on the sidelines looking quite blasé and detached). More deserving accolades go to Jessica Lynn Cohen as Marie, whose genuineness never wanes and dance steps never falter. Bart Robinson Cook is wonderful as the playful Herr Drosselmeier, and Darci Kistler is the graceful Sugarplum Fairy. Mostly this film belongs to children--both on the stage and in the audience. What is lacking in spontaneous energy of live theater is made up for in a perfectly polished performance. The only thing missing is the well-earned applause. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
The video is grainy. The camera moves around a lot - lots of close up - hard to follow the dancing.

5-0 out of 5 stars nyc ballet does it best
really fabulous dancing. my daughter was a little disappointed by the ending. they just go off in a sled and that is the end. she was looking for the return to the living room and clara waking up. the rest of it was great.

4-0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves this ballet
Ever since my 2 year old daughter saw this ballet at Christmas, she hasn't stopped talking about it.We bought this DVD and the first thing she says in the morning is "I want to watch the dancing girls."Even though she spends a lot of time in front of the TV screen watching this, we figure it's OK since she's watching a ballet and listening to classical music.I enjoy watching it too, even though Macaulay Culkin can't dance. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars It's ridiculous!!!
So, I picked this up thinking, this should be funny....and it was.Christy Lane must be one of the most sheltered people in the dance scene. She changes outfits for each section, for the 60's section she opted for the hawiian shirt? She also had a section about the "techno/club" dances, in which she sported a vest that could have only been made w/ the Bedazzler. She's an ok dancer, not that this should have any effect on the hilarity of the video. Her robot is the worst thing I have ever seen, her Hammertime is not much better. However, just the fact that she decided to include these 2 party dances is a testiment to how silly this video is.
5-0 out of 5 stars entertainment at it's best
my husband checked this out at the local library and we watched and learned with a couple of friends.while christy lane is not as informed on the current, that is "current 90s", dance crazes and trends the video is very entertaining!i highly recommend watching it with a couple of friends and even if you think its a joke, chances are you'll learn a couple dance moves you might actually use!

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice video and story
The story in the video is nice and should teach perseverance. These are the comments on the reviews. However, my daughter of 3 and half soon realized that Madeline was lucky only because she found the prima ballerina willing to help her to take part into the show, despite Madeline made a lot of mistakes during the selection.5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet story about perservering
Madeline is usually a very capable girl, but because she is so small she has a hard time being as good a dancer as her friends. Her class is invited to participate in the Paris ballet production of "The Happy Swan," but her clumsiness causes one disaster after another and almost doesn't get to dance at the primere. She dreams of being a prima ballerina, so the revelation of her inadequacy is discouraging to her. To her credit, she does not give up, and along the way is encouraged by Miss Clavel and an unexpected friend. In the end, even though she isn't perfect, she tries her hardest. My daughter loves the dancing and can relate to Madeline's frustrations of being too small and too clumsy. It's a sweet story that encourages girls to do their best even when disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars It will make you want to dance!

5-0 out of 5 stars Michael Jackson Behind the Scenes
A glimps of Michael Jackson's personality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thriller scared me as kid!
I think thriller is michael jackson's best work ever. He actually looked darling back then. The music video's special effects were state of the art for that era in cinema and music video. Which explains why I'm freaked out by it to this day. The ghouls and sound effects were hauntingly real for an 80's music video. The music is creepy and yet still great to dance to. The choreography I have to say was amazing!

Join professional dancer Debra Maxwell and her mixed-gender class for anintroduction to ballet.Maxwell demonstrates the five basic ballet positions, then goes to the barre for a lesson in ballet essentials like demi plié, élevé,tendu, dégagé, rond de jambe, and grand battement.Maxwell provides clearvisual and verbal instruction for each step, then offers pointers andencouragement as her young students try the steps alone and with arm movementsand musical accompaniment.Students discuss ballet's role in developing theirconcentration, grace, and musculature, and praise its influence on school, music, and sports. The centre work portion of the video begins with thetransformation of a simple game of hopscotch into a ballet routine utilizingtechniques learned at the barre.Additional steps covered include jete, sauté,assemblé, skip, chassé, and révérence. This nicely presented, 30-minute videois an informative, non-threatening introduction to ballet. 4-0 out of 5 stars A Clear "Introduction to Ballet"
Debra Maxwell teaches a small ballet class of grade-school children, one of whom is new to the class. She explains the terms and shows precisely how to move the arms and feet. The five basic positions are taught, as wellas some barre work and center work. The video is, indeed, only a bareintroduction, but it's a great joy for my 5 year old to use daily. Iappreciate the teacher's attitude toward the children in the class, expecting good work, but still being supportive of their beginning efforts. Some brief segments of accomplished adult dancers are included.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful video!
This tape is just like taking an intermediate or advanced- beginning class (but much cheaper and easier to fit into a busy schedule). The production isn't fabulous, but who cares- David Howard is one of the best ballet teachers in the world and the dancers demonstrating are lovely( but extremely skinny- be warned if you find this discouraging). I used to dance quite seriously and did this video every day for months to get back in shape without getting sick of it. There is a full barre and the center combinations are enjoyable, well choreographed, and you don't need too much space to do them. A truly great video if you already have a fair amount of ballet experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great advanced ballet video!
I would definately recommend this video to any of my friends in the dance hall.It is fast-paced, fun and a very good work out. This video is DEFINATELY NOT for a beginner.Be prepared to sweat when buying this video.

5-0 out of 5 stars deeply absorbing, what can be dance?
After all these decades of, books, discussion and vibrant example of the import of the avant-garde, where it has become institutionalized we still find those perplexed and angered by John Cage and Merce Cunningham, their working methods, spirit, artistic affinities, and expanding perceptive means of what can be art.4-0 out of 5 stars Stars of the Avant Garde
Points in Space is not the most recent of Merce Cunningham's work (for which you should see "A Lifetime of Dance") but it represents another example of how Cunningham and Cage seized upon and experimented with any and every new medium that might bring their respective arts to a wider discerning audience. In this case, television.1-0 out of 5 stars the emperor's are naked
Merce Cunningham, and particulary John Cage, have nothing to say. This work is an exercize in nihilism; it means nothing.Cage wants his "music" to be uninfluenced by him.Why write then? The "music" is a series of words minus vowels, manipulated by computer to be void of any suggestion of real words or sounds, let alone any musicality.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ballet company in the world!
I have been dancing for five years, and haven't seen any real professional ballet dancers dance. I have bought this tape and American Ballet Theatre's Le Corsaire to see which ballet company is the best. I have to say that the Bolshoi Ballet exceed's ABT by so much! The male dancers are strong and powerful, the female dancers light and graceful. The Bolshoi Ballet's dancers cannot even be compared to those of ABT! I look forward to their upcoming performances. Please by this tape and enjoy the wonderful performance of the Bolshoi!

5-0 out of 5 stars A feast for your eyes
For anyone who loves classical ballet and wants to see fresh approach -- this one is for you. I own two other versions of "La Bayadere"( which means the temple dancer), but this one is the best.Nadezhda Gracheva, the principal dancer, is superb. She is the pastand the present of Russian ballet combined into one.Her technique is impeccable, her flexibility and athleticism are taken to the max, but underneath it all it's the Russian ballet training that shows through. The stage design, the costumes, the choreography - the whole production, including every dancer involved in it are perfect. This video makes a wonderful gift or an investment for anyone who appreciates ballet art. The only flaw that it doesn't list all of the principal dancers except for Nadezhda Gracheva as Nikiaand Vetrov as Solor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutly Gorgeous!
The Bolshoi's La Bayadere is now one of my favorite ballets! The principle dancer (Nadia ? ) who dances Nikkia is amazing, tall, strong, and very beautiful. She (too me) is an all time great ballerina whoperforms an all around great ballet! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flash and substance
The 'Highlights' video is from one of the earliest of the Pet Shop Boys' live, tour performances. For a long time, the Pet Shop Boys resisted going on tour, partly because of the technical difficulties of their songs, and partly because the expectations of the fans would be so high with regard to what the fans would want. This was solved in large part by increasing technological advancement in computer and musical instrumentation, and also by the savvy direction of Derek Jarman, one of the genius bad-boys of film direction in the UK.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent study and music
I recently purchased this video, being a long admirer of Roudnev. This is a marvelous intermediate "tune-up" for anyone who has already studied classical dance, particularly the exceptional Russian method, which is well presented here in form. Roudnev's chosen music is beautiful also. This is just an overall great video to watch, learn and/or re-learn from, and also practice with.

5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderfulclass
A wonderful tape for those who have studied dancing. The combinations were perfect and enable the dancer to warm upbut still work on a bit more advanced level.I have always loved Dmitri's class music and have bought most of his c. d's.

I think it is a very interesting class you can do at home. Excercises are nice and carefully explained. You certainly need a ballet background, flexibility and shaped muscles.

5-0 out of 5 stars Unrefined Animation Treatment Fails To Spoil A Balletic Delight.
This ballet, formed from a much beloved as well as archetypal Russian folk tale was created for the Bolshoi Ballet's Maya Plisetskaya by her husband, supremely skillful orchestrator Rodion Shchedrin, composer of the work.Lissome Plisetskaya's recognized strengths, here as the Queen Maiden, are clearly in evidence throughout the film: matchless elevation, splendidly disciplined movements, and emotional interpretation that covers a wide range.English ballerina Alicia Markova's published comment that Plisetskaya is incapable of completing foutts is thoroughly discredited as the latter lightly tosses off more than the 32 of these demanding turns that have become traditional in the role of Odile in Le Lac des Cygnes, to which Markova refers.Plisetskaya is partnered here by a youthful Vladimir Vasiliev, (later both General, and Artistic, Director of the Bolshoi Theatre), whose acrobatic flair as Ivan is on display, his highly accomplished technique nearly matching in worthiness that of the great ballerina.Partly filmed during an actual performance at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow that utilizes original sets crafted for the piece, the narrative rhythm of the ballet is nearly daunted by an attempt to augment its essentially folkloric elements with primordial animation, in addition to superimposition and uninspiring table top models, but fortunately the narrative and dancing prevail. The Bolshoi's house Ballet Master, Alexandre Radunsky, not only choreographs and scripts the production, but also plays as the King, and Alla Scherbinina is wonderful as the Little Humpbacked Horse whose conjuring powers are of signal importance to Ivan, while the Bolshoi Corps and soloists are as accomplished as ever in secondary but crucial character parts. The film has no dialogue as produced by Mosfilm, and certainly none is required, but English language voiceover narration is added by Artkino and accompanies a Kultur release, not in the event inappropriate as it is spare while yet being descriptive of the storyline's progress. At any rate, all else fades from a viewer's attention when Maya Plisetkaya dances.

4-0 out of 5 stars Humpbacked Horse
I really enjoyed the DVD because it is a Russian folk story that features one of the greatest ballerinas ever.I greatly admire Maya Plisetskaya's technical and performance abilities and I especially enjoyed seeing her execute the fouette turns with the corps de ballet towards the middle of the DVD.The film was a bit fuzzy, but the story and music were a joy.I recommend this for children, especially children studying classical ballet because it shows us that ballet does not have to be stiff, sterile or acrobatic to entertain, as is so often the case now.

4-0 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned, but Rewarding
This ballet-film is of the Russian folk story of the little humpbacked horse. It features the Bolshoi Ballet, starring two dancing legends: Maya Plisetskaya and Vladimir Vasiliev. The promotional copy describes it as "a magical tour through the land of flying horses, dancing fish, and tumbling clowns...." This is primarily a ballet, although there have been some animation and other elements added to enhance the film.Read more

Personally, I would not have cast David.I don't know how he won any competitions quite frankly. But I do like the series of patterns that these two offer. They do a good job of demonstrating the move with it's name and then breaking it down with an explanation.Additionally, they have other moves that they dance. They don't breakdown the extras, but you can glean a few new things from them if you're capable enough.Decent video, but the audio was rather muffled.I'd recommend it for the actual material presented, although their style isn't what I'd hoped.

5-0 out of 5 stars A video I will enjoy watching again, and again, and again...
I totally enjoyed this video. Lisa's dancing was wonderful - a level to aspire to. Dave's explanations were clear and well thought out. I especially liked the way he explained how to lead in a way that avoids injury to both the leader AND the person he is leading - I've danced with a few people I'd like to give this video to! I also like his use of slow motion on the most complex lift - very helpful. I will definitely look for more of their vidoes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Salsa at its best!
I bought the video after watching Lisa and Dave dance.I was very impressed with their moves and style. I've had the video for over 2 years and I still consistently watch it.Dave is great at explaining all the moves, including what mistakes to avoid, very important for dips. He makes it easy to follow.I'm not a professional dancer, I've been taking lessons and the video is a great tool.I personally love the solos. If you want to look good at a club this is the video to buy! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great substitution for class
As an intermediate-advanced dancer, I have looked for years for an excercise video that gives me the feeling, both physically and artistically, as an actual class. This is the closest I've found--for the first time I actually look forward to doing an "exercise" video, and feel stretched and energized when I'm done. The combinations are too short, so I usually do each one twice on each side, or do both floor sections, followed by both barres, etc.
4-0 out of 5 stars I loved this video!
I took ballet for several years growing up and even got on toe. I stopped and came back to ballet when I was in my 20's. I have loved this video b/c it feels like my old ballet classes, is the right length of time, leaves me feeling like I worked out (and have improved my posture), and is a literal "class." I was looking so forward to receiving the New York City Ballet DVD and was sorely disappointed with the lack of "class" feel (even though it is very well shot) b/c I love barre work. (Also, if you want to look at a bunch of naked bodies . . . well, I prefer the "good, old fashioned" tights and leotard in Miss Lowe's workout way better -- way better)! 3-0 out of 5 stars Get your pink tutu on
Oh my goodness Melissa Lowe is goofy... the leotards, the explanations, the pudgy assistants, the dancers' blank expressions.... That said, I think this is a pretty good *ballet class* rather than a workout, so you really need to have had some prior dance experience. Since I've got over 10 years of ballet experience, I thought it was easy to follow and fairly challenging to keep up with (she moves pretty fast--either you know it or you don't), but without experience I would have been totally lost, as the moves and steps are pretty complicated. While I broke a sweat and my legs ached, it was kind of a drag to keep one eye on the screen the whole time, because Lowe's cuing is bad, and I was always a beat behind the dancers. Furthermore, Lowe never really explains what you should be looking for regarding form or how it should feel and where, so the potential for injury is high (especially during the jumps!). Watch out ankles! The workouts are short, which is also kind of a drag. I really wanted to keep dancing a bit longer!Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable
I greatly enjoyed this and highly recommend it.It is especially effective in the second half.Highlights include the performance of the mouse king (spectacular flip!), the performance of the Arabians (wonderfully choreographed), and the pas de deux. It's a pleasure to see the delight Oksana Baiul takes in her own performance and in the production as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous
Although probably directed at the childrens' audience market this adult and two others enjoyed it as if we were children again. Delightful, refreshing and historically valuable to see the two primary skaters at an earlier age. The narrator was slightly objectionable but this should not detract from overall enjoyment.
