2-0 out of 5 stars I Don't See Why People Like This
I'm sorry, but I really don't! It's a style called Celtic Drama, which means it's a combination of stories w/o words and traditional Irish Dancing.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Dream Come True After Eurovision--"RIVERDANCE"
With tremendous applause and a standing ovation at the 1994 Eurovision's 7 minute intermission; Michael Flatley, Jean Butler, and an Irish troupe of dancers tapped their way into the record books. It was all that was talked about that night long ago. "Riverdance" was born soon after.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of All the Riverdance Shows
I have seen this particular show several times on video that I rented a few years back. I have never been able to find it anywhere since, in any video store or anywhere else. I have also seen the other Riverdance shows done in New York and Geneva, but this show is by far, the BEST Riverdance show ever! The collaboration of the Riverdance Company, Bill Whelan, Michael Flatley and everyonelse that was involved in this show is just pure magic! As much as I have enjoyed seeing the other Riverdance shows and Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance -- there just seems to be something very special about this show! Hope you will get it reproduced very soon! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Patiently Waiting
I grew up watching moonwalk. I think it is one of the best films ever made. I am dying to obtain a copy to show my children what a real classic is all about. Please hurry!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Michael Jackson
I first watched Moonwalker when I was 8 years old and I have been hooked on it ever since!! How could they wait this long to release it on DVD? Moonwalker is evidence as to why America fell in love with Michael in the first place. Speed Demon, Bad, Dirty Diana- Moonwalker IS Michael Jackson. Please release it on DVD as soon as possible!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great dancing but NOT for children
I felt compelled to write this review for anyone who, like me, intended to purchase this for their children. It has many great scenes/stories that are fun for kids, but the last 1/4 of the film is extremely violent--machine guns, mobsters, shootings, child abduction, etc. This is unfortunate as this last segment contains some of the best dancing and choreography of the entire video. ... Editorial Review

The American Ballet Theater version of the Tchaikovsky classic, a 1977 studio rendition directed by Tony Charmoli, has become a holiday perennial on PBS stations and home video. It's a favorite of parents who want to give their kids the gift of culture--and with good reason. There's a loose fairy tale plot to keep dance neophytes interested, and Boris Aronson's eye-candy production design is a series of lavish dioramas. From an imperial-era Russian Christmas party out of Tolstoy, a young girl named Clara (Gelsey Kirkland) is whisked in dreams to an imaginary world populated by the animated creations of the wizard toy maker Drosselmeier (Alexander Minz), who prances on his stick-thin limbs like a Dickens illustration come to life. The main attraction is, of course, Mikhail Baryshnikov, one of the greatest classical dancers of the century, at his absolute peak of athleticism and precision. An opening slow-motion montage diagrams his fabled smoothness of execution, elegant airborne trajectories that have a feather-light perfection.Music lovers who know only "The Nutcracker Suite" will relish the chance to hear this great score all the way through, conducted with lilt and vigor by Kenneth Schermerhorn. 4-0 out of 5 stars Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker / Baryshnikov, Kirkland, Charmoli
Wonderful as all Baryshnikov performances are.The popular Christmas ballet at its best!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Adaptation
I was impressed that they actually performed this to be video taped and took advantage of the video options like zoom.No one jumps like Baryshnikov. It's magical.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nutcracker has a clear sexual theme to it
Rss22 is apparently disturbed by the sexual theme present in this version of the Nutcracker. However, it is essential to the ballet. In short, the Nutcracker is about a young girl becoming a woman and the sexual conflicts involved. Her dream is clearly sexual. She fights off the mice who represent her "dirty" sexual impulses and lascivious temptations including that of being "conquered" by the Mouse King. Finally, with the arrival of the Nutcracker Prince and his help, she is able to sublimate these impulses into a mature love for a protector who marries her (the Nutcracker prince) and who makes an "honest woman" of her. Proper versions of the ballet always have the Christmas tree swell and rise to gargantuan size, like the big phallis it represents. Ballets that fail to do this indicate a lack of understanding of what the ballet is all about. However, children can enjoy it without necessarily having the sexual meanings made explicit to them. Just don't point them out. Simple. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Simon Kieth's popular comic book was adapted for television in this multipart animated series first broadcast on MTV. A little confusing, the series--which concerns a kind of hulking superhero and his attachment to a female therapist and her teenage client--is actually mesmerizing and surprisingly touching. The writing is unusually sophisticated, and Kieth's ability to create complex female characters and provide their incisive dialogue should be the envy of any male scribe. Parallel action set in a so-called outback--an escape from reality--is wild and evocative of childhood fantasies. This is a strangely beautiful show all around. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Is this all of "The Maxx" ?
I recently found my VHS tape of this series & wondered if there was a DVD version available, no such luck! This was perhaps the best thing to come from MTV in the 90's, only to disappear into obscurity.
5-0 out of 5 stars You can see it unedited
This is not a review per se (the series is great) but I wanted to let those interested know that all the episodes- unedited- can be seen at youtube.com. Until the series is released unabridged on DVD , which seems unlikely, that's the only way I know of to see it in its original form.

5-0 out of 5 stars I hope The Maxx gets released on DVD.
I don't have this retail version of the show, but I do have the original episodes that I recorded from MTV Oddities in 1995.I think the show and the original comic book are excellent!I pulled them out and watched them for the first time in over 5 years.I wish there was some way to get this released on DVD. ... Editorial Review

Do you envy ballet dancers their long, lean bodies and graceful, elegant movements? This beautifully produced exercise video was developed by Peter Martins and the New York City Ballet with the New York Sports Club. First you watch the rippling muscles of four gorgeous ballet dancers (two men and two women) performing warm-up moves to classical ballet music. Martins uses ballet terminology in his cuing and no technique is taught, so it's look-and-follow if you have no previous ballet training. Next you get down on a mat for slow lower-body stretches. A difficult abdominal series is next, followed by "floor barre" exercises to tone the thighs and buttocks while still using the abdominals. After introducing moves to strengthen the back and upper body, Martins runs through a series of standing exercise segments using various ballet movements to strengthen the legs and postural muscles. The workout is divided into 17 short sections, which may give it a disjointed feeling if you're used to more continuity. At the end is a bonus sequence with profiles of the four performers, all dancers with the New York City Ballet. We get to watch them performing, practicing, and eating. One dancer makes the point that ballet is very athletic, but because it's supposed to look ethereal, the hard work stays hidden from the audience. If you love ballet (even just watching it), you'll enjoy this workout. (By the way, Sarah Jessica Parker introduces the video but does not have any other role in it.) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant and artistic--definitely not your standard workout DVD!
The New York City Ballet Workout has more in common with a film playing at your local art house theatre than the average workout DVD.It is artistically masterful--a work of art in light and shadow and movement of the human body. But is it a good workout?
5-0 out of 5 stars love it!
I love this workout. It is so relaxing and has increased my flexibility. Even when I am tired, I can do this workout and feel energized and relaxed at the same time. At first I had a difficult time, because I had not done any ballet before. However, after about two weeks of doing the workout three times of week, my balance and flexibility were beginning to improve, and my legs became more familiar with the positions.
4-0 out of 5 stars NYC Ballet Video
This is a very well-produced, entertaining, visually pleasing video. I haven't yet worked out with it, as it looks a bit difficult for a complete novice like myself, however, I am inspired to try. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent example of a REAL live performance
SIGN O' THE TIMES was an excellent "concert movie"... but, as we all know, alot of it was re-shot and re-filmed with prince lip synching. THIS, however, was NOT a lip synched concert (to the idiot who said otherwise) ... as for guitar not plugged in?You can tell whoever wrote that review knows little about live performances... (...) ... it's called a wireless system... it's been around for YEARS and yes, Prince was one of the first to use it extensively.
4-0 out of 5 stars On DVD ? A Shame It Won't Be....Ever
Live at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, Prince Rogers Nelson delivers an electrifying live mix of R&B, Soul, Blues, and Rock with a somewhat electronic treatment from the rhythm section known as The Revolution. Generously borrowing from some of his heroes including James Brown, The Kid makes the most of every inch of floor space for a great 90-minute set that offers extended jam versions of some of his earlier radio hits like '1999' and 'Delirious'. While some sections of the show move too slowly or are redundant, overall the vision of the genius is apparent. 'The Beautiful Ones' is poignant and sensual. 'Baby I'm a Star' culminates into a conga line of sorts, as everybody gets into the act onstage, including Sheila E. (his opening act at the time.) But the jaw-dropping, awe-inspiring 20-minute encore of 'Purple Rain' is the true gem of this concert, and it is only fitting he saved the best for last. A religious experience, to say the least: only once in a generation can a musical legend captivate and mesmerize an audience with one song.

3-0 out of 5 stars OH MY.....
It's not entirely fair to completely write these videos off as juvenile, inane, trite and garish. They are all those things and more. Amatuerish is the one word that immediately comes to mind. Then again, most ALL videos from the very early 1980's are. I had this VHS when I was in high school and watched it religiously, never knowing how bad they really were. Curiousity got the best of me and I pulled this out of the back of the video rack and watched it last night. Boy, are these videos bad. But as a historical document of the only electronic pop band that matters, it does hold a certain fascination, especially for longtime fans. I then wondered why Depeche Mode do not have a complete video history on one DVD set. They have, after all, been around for almost 25 years and have literally dozens of singles and videos. One look at thepromotional video for "Get the Balance Right" ( I caught that one on VH1 Classic's "We Are the Eighties" last night, which made me curious enough tofind said video cassette) makes me understand why. Depeche Mode members are on record as saying they are terribly embaressed by most of their early videos andI can assure you they have every right to be. I'd keep 'em under lock and key too.

5-0 out of 5 stars hard to resist
Despite the fact I'm a diehard Depeche Mode fan, I was too young to remember most of the band's earlier work. So I got a really big kick out of watching most of these music videos for the first time. I'll admit they're not as high quality as the later videos like "Personal Jesus" and "Barrel Of A Gun," but they really strengthen their fan base. If you've got to insult this collection of videos, then you weren't much of a Depeche Mode fan in the first place. Accept these videos for what they are..."beginnings."

5-0 out of 5 stars Nothing wrong with the early videos
The less developed mind may not understand the charm of the band's earliest videos, but the ones found on these collection are more compelling than the videos from Music for The Masses and Violator in my opinion. The low budget quality adds a depth the later polished vids lack. I loved Everything Counts, the way Dave jolts around singing facing away with the camera posed above him.Just Can't Get Enough is kind of hilarious because of the way the band is dressed, but damn it if it aint a fun video! Teenagers in the eighties really had a blast with this stuff. It's too bad videos are so uber- perfect and stylized today.I always prefer the earlier vids of bands like INXS and Depeche Mode and so on. They are flawed perfection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but probably not for beginners
This is one of the very few commercial videotapes on the planet that provides instruction in the 20's charleston, so if you want to learn how to dance to Chicago or New Orleans jazz, here's your chance.5-0 out of 5 stars World of Swing #6 From Partner Charlston to Lindy Charlston
I really enjoyed this tape. I practiced the moves taught in the tape at home, they were very easy to follow and understand. Then I put them into my dance and they looked very stylish.

5-0 out of 5 stars Charleston is back!
This video was great for learning steps and turns that can be used in charleston. The Instructors Marcus & Bärbl were thorough and easy to follow. 3-0 out of 5 stars Good workout, poor videography
I was really excited when this video arrived in my mailbox.I ripped off the plastic, shrugged into my leg warmers, and stuck it in my VCR...5-0 out of 5 stars No regrets!
This video workout does take time, but is very worth it. I am a former ballet student, now grandma with arthritis and back problems. This workout makes my muscles, warm, relaxed, never had a strain or sore result. I really value ballet that keeps the long, lean lines which I was taught to look for as a factor to weigh if it was done/taught correctly. I may never return to the limberness I had (what was that? splits? yeah right!)but really appreciate this workout.I have many other videos that ended up in the garbage, or unused. This one, I get out and do! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected at all
After reading all these wonderful reviews I was expecting something a little more professional in it's taping. As it was, the camera couldn't seem to hold still long enough to show exactly what some of the moves were.It was all over the place.I learned a few moves, but this video seemed more like an infomercial or testimony rather than an instruction video.Too much talking and not enough instruction.Over all, they teach 3 hip roles, but claim to teach 4.The fourth one is the same as the first one, just on your knees instead of standing.
4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for beginners
If you're not it's still great because it forces you to concentrate on your body during the movements. It also gives a lot of great advice. These moves are core moves only. If your looking for more, this video is not for you. My favorite part was actually during the credits you are able to view the instructor in action during several clips.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Something Fun for Your Lover
This video / DVD is about the art of sensual erotic dancing.Your boyfriend or husband will be dilighted and this DVD may certainly help you to add a spice to your relationship. (It did add spice to mine).

5-0 out of 5 stars "Martha was in hysterics. The curtain was about to go up...
...and Louie went up to her, slapped her right across the chomps - BAM! - and said, 'Get on with this you *****. Stop your nonsense!'" This is legendary choreographer Agnes de Mille describing how music director Louie Horst "dealt" with one of Martha's famous tantrums. What is most amazing about this blunt story is that it is delivered by a sweet white-haired Anges de Mille who must be in her 80s at this point. Read more

Editorial Review

The title is somewhat a misnomer: this 83-minute video isn't a "workout" so much as a ballet class. If you've taken ballet in the past--or if you've always wanted to--pull on your tights and leg warmers and enjoy this video. Melissa Lowe, a former soloist and principal dancer with several ballet companies, leads two levels of workout. Level 1 is for those with little or no ballet training; ballet experience is helpful for level 2. Each level has three segments: floor work (stretches to warm up the muscles), barre work (standing exercises and positions done holding onto a barre or chair), and center work (more intense conditioning with balance, traveling, and some jumping). If you're not already flexible, you'll find the stretches daunting, even at level 1. This is a 1984 video and doesn't have the production quality you find in more current videos, but ballet is timeless. The music is solo piano--just like in ballet class. The lithe, willowy instructor doesn't smile or try to engage the audience, but she sure knows ballet, and her flexibility and grace are awe inspiring. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good basic ballet exercises
I just rec'd this and have only done the level 1 so far - but that's enough for the meantime! I'm definitely feeling it, esp. in the upper thighs, muscles I'd forgotten I had! I purchased this because I have very poor flexibility, and having a 7 mos old baby that I carry around often, well, it's all taking its toll on my back. In the past I've taken ballet for enjoyment and it always helped to keep me flexible and toned. Plus, I get bored with doing pilates, gym classes, etc. - this is a welcome change of pace.
4-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a dancer or ballerina, but I love this workout
If you can get past the early 1980's clothing/hair/make-up and the poor transfer quality of the VHS to DVD (think a rental shop VHS that has had a few too many plays) then you will enjoy this workout. As the Amazon write up states, ballet is timeless and it wouldn't have bothered me if it was shot in the 1960's - ballet moves are ballet moves no matter what the participants are wearing!
2-0 out of 5 stars just o.k.
I own several ballet videos.I have taken ballet for many years and use videos when there are no classes available. This would be the last one I would grab. It's doable but the explanations are poor and the video is frustrating to watch. The camera person zooms in too much and makes it hard to follow along. The sequences are poorly put together.I much prefer David Howard or Dimitri R. ballet videos. They are wonderful if you know ballet.I hope I will find more challenging tapes out there. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A carefully thought out fantastic dance instruction video
If all dance videos were produced this well, there would have to be at least 10 times as many places to dance in the world in order to accomodate all of the dedicated dancers. The instruction, dancing, tips, photography, audio, and sequencing of steps (which step is taught first, second, etc.) are all absolutely impecable. In fact, Peta's tips for using the video (given at the beginning) can be applied to learing from any dance video and to learning how to dance in general - from any source.
4-0 out of 5 stars Useful
It is a good video because it contains twenty variations, it is well explained and both Peta and Josie are very good dancers. However, the variations are shown as starting on two and I find more natural to start on one. Besides, their waist movement does not look as natural as a latin street dancer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Of all the cha-cha videos I've seen this is the best
I've had very little luck finding cha-cha dance video's, and most of them show the same basic steps over and over. This video is the exception, I'd rate this as Josie's best video in terms of production and content. The routines are well thought out and explained. The style of cha-cha shown is the same one I learned and see practice in clubs here in Texas, so no complaints there. Overall this video packs a huge bang for the buck.70 minutes with the mans, then woman's part explained. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's great!!!
This video is great, and I wish that the New Kids had made a video for their first album. Step by Step shows the guys live and backstage, and they are really cute!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great video to show you how it all started>
I can still remember watching this video so long ago. This is when it all started. These guys are very talented and should be remembered always!! This tape really should be re-released.

5-0 out of 5 stars NKOTB RULE!Joe looks great in it, and it's fun to watch!
I Love NKOTB sooo much it's not even funny.Who cares if they are older , they beat any of the guy bands out today. The movie gets you right up close and personal with them and I'm sure you'll enjoy watching their dancemoves, and hearing their voices talk about life.I wish they were stilltogether, and you can imagine they are with this video.I want to say Hito my NKOTB Buds: Anna, Melissa, and Lindsay!Buy it you'll love it! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars When Madonna was prettier than ever!
This video is very nice to watch. It has Madonnas first videos made for her early biggest hits. This video is enjoyable because you get to see Madonna during the early eighties when she was still fresh, young, and innocent. This video takes you back in time when Madonna was more feminine and prettier than what she is now. This is a video for any hardcore Madonna fan of her early eighties look.Seeing this video in a way makes you miss the old Madonna from the Like A Virgin days.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Compilation of Madonna's Videos
With her rising popularity and heavy radio play during the mid 1980s, Madonna was bound to have her earliest videos compiled on videocassette. The first in a series of many compilations "Madonna: Madonna" contains four videos that were released on her self titled debut album and sophomore album, "Like A Virgin." Starting with the classic "Borderline" (which features a yet unknown actor by the name of John Leguizamo in a non-speaking extra role; keep an eye out for him in the breakdancing scenes) the tape continues with three other Madonna video gems, "Lucky Star," "Like a Virgin" and the hard to find video "Burning Up," which only can be found on this videocassette (it was not included in Madonna's "Immaculate Collection" compilation).5-0 out of 5 stars 4 80s FANS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
this is one of my favorite madonna videos mostly because it shows the 80s madonna .There are 4 madonna videos on this vhs tape : 1. BURNING UP (1983)Read more

Editorial Review

This collection of Spice Girls stuff includes their first four music videos, a documentary on a year in the life of the group, interviews and behind-the-scene stuff, and their songs "Wannabe," "Say You'll Be There," and others. This is mostly for Spice boosters, but as usual, the women are feisty and funny, and almost anyone can be entertained by this for a little while. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure enjoyment!
I was craving a little Spice in my life last summer so I came to Amazon searching for some Spice Girls DVDs or something to feed my addiction.I'm sad to say that none of the VHS have been released on DVDs but I was so excited to find this tape.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spice up close
This video starts with them sitting on a couch telling you to get comfy. "stick the kettle on make yourself comfy er we go-Mel B. It starts at 1995 and they also give you a behind-the scenes
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful video!
This is the first thing that I ever bought of the Spice Girls. I wanted to know more about them & their music before I got too invested. Well, this video tells you everything about the girls & more. It shows how hard they work & that they are all really down to earth girls who had a dream & made it come true. The girls comment on everything in the video, providing info on events and footage they hadn't even seen before. Follow the girls behind the scenes of the making of their video "Say You'll Be There", see them at the famous Oxford street lighting, a pillowfight, having some laughs, and tons more. This video also includes their first 5 full-length music videos for "Wannabe", "Say You'll Be There", "2 Become 1", "Mama", & "Who Do You Think You Are". Also, one of the biggest treats is at the end of this video when we get to see the girls perform their famous Brit awards performance in 1997 of "Who Do You Think You Are". A very good video if you want to know more about the fab 5 & their first year of success! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Another vote to hang the video editor
This show (and disc) is everything good that's already been written, so I won't rehash it, but the one thing that keeps you from really enjoying many parts of it as much as you might like to is the horrific editing style. Some yoyo was obviously given a board with too many camera feeds, lenses, and angles, and a free hand to demonstrate childish fascination with them by switching from view to view to view almost as fast as the feet hitting the stage. While this might be appropriate for a 30 second commercial advertising the show, it really keeps you from enjoying the perspective of actually watching the show.
5-0 out of 5 stars What's WRONG about it,I gave it 5 stars but...
What's happening here?!,every time I hear the CD(not the DVD),"Crowley" trucks appear, every,I mean evuhry time I see one,the words appear in other things:shruberry, shrubs, trees and even grass, you have to help me!!!!!!.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have...
I think I will have to buy a new copy of this DVD, I watched mine so many times that it's starting to skip... :) Well, I believe this is THE ONE DVD an Irish-dance fanatic like myself can't live without. I know Riverdance was the first of it's kind (starring Michael Flatley, who else) but this is still my favorite show of all. Flatley is at his best. We get a lot of dance with a littlebit of singing and music. Riverdance just has too many other things going on instead of step dancing. Feet of Flames is more high-tech but to me this is still the one. And then there are all the new shows that keep popping up, but they all learned from Michael Flatley.
