5-0 out of 5 stars Just say WOW!
The story isn't that good. The humour is awful. Some of the sets are a joke. But the action? Man, you just can't fault this baby. The twin nunchaku sequence is superb. The fight with Bob Wall is unbelievable. But the true triumph is the Chuck Norris fight. Has to be one of the greatest fight scenes ever filmed. Fantastic. The choreography (entirely Lee's work) is matched only by the final execution. This is a true lesson from a true master on how cinematic fight scenes should be built, performed and filmed. Stunning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible Quality
This movie has bad quality it is dubed in they have deep voices and it sounds bad.If you want a good bruce Lee movie get Enter the Dragon I thought it would be a good movie but I was worng. It was not even a hollywood movie maybe if you were a big fan of Bruce Lee you could handle the bad quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bruce Lee's most fun film; a classic
Set in Rome, Return of the Dragon (ROTD) is the last of Bruce's Hong Kong-produced films.Unlike Hollywood-produced Enter the Dragon, the English is dubbed, the production quality low by comparison. Yet, this movie is highly entertaining.Enter the Dragon was Bruce's biggest film, but there's something about ROTD that makes it his most exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars We are the History.
It's a story,it's the past that we can't hold back.We must not be so dupe of what had happened.I watched it,I know it and I don't want to ask questions where the answers are there. We know the answers.Somehow rather, the movie is to me,very well done. It's enjoyable to me though there are few afflict scenes. It can happen to me,to you and to anybody. It's a story of the past that has shaped the World.I have also that documentary regarding Romanov. It's just that, when I learnt in school,at fourteen years old,I can't imagine how the Emperor and his Emperesse would look like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can I give it 6 Stars?
An outstanding film, Nicholas & Alexandra, brings to the screen the story of the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II and his family's tragic end at the hands of the Bolsheviks.
4-0 out of 5 stars CD version necessary to understand fame/power karma
If you are interested in knowing what challenges monarches and other powerful people face, this movie is a great beginning. You may or may not be interested in Russian history or even world history, but this particular story greatly encapsulates the emotional, physical and political issues faced by two powerfully-born adults and their children. Other reviews at this site are terrific for their critical perceptions of this movie and its strengths and weaknesses, so I will not go into too much detail to "sell" anybody on the action or dialogue, or historical accuracy. Suffice to say this movie -- in its unedited version (crucial for DVD) does in fact tell it like it is (or was). Nicholas and Alexandra were two human beings who happened to be born into the Western dynastic system still prevalent at the turn of the 20th century. They were responsible, in an almost Biblical sense, for the destiny of Humanity, only they opted out, and were then executed. This would be considered "romantic" if Humanity did not have such an overwhelming need for Leadership by designated heroes. The DVD version is critical to see the full relationship between Alexandria and Rasputin as a surrendering of power, and also to see Rasputin in his full decadent expression (which must be positively repulsive to Russian history revisionists.) It is also necessary, in an emotional and historic context, to see the "failure" of Nicholas -- that he could no longer carry the responsibility of the godhead. It is also relevant to see the execution of Rasputin at the hands of the two hop-head fairies who were also in line to inherit this godhead, and that they themselves had dreams of American incorporation. Alexia (Nicholas and Alexandra's only son, who also happened to be a hemophiliac) hates his persecutors with a very personal, adult hatred -- those who persecuted the Romanov dynasty were people who hated themselves and took that hatred out on the leaders they loved and despised. They loved their leaders, and despised their need for leaders. If you purchase this movie, whatever your reason or interest, please buy the DVD so that it is unedited (meaning uncensored) so thatyou may judge for yourself. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This film was a touchstone of the late 1960s, when it was seen as an antiwar allegory for a world in which madness seemed to reign. Of course, that would probably be true whenever this movie was shown, wouldn't it? Directed by Philippe de Broca and set during World War I, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'King of Hearts' is King in My Heart
I have been going to the movies for a long, long time...starting in the late 1930's.'King of Hearts' is very near the top of my list of favorites and I was delighted to be able to obtain my very own copy. The premise asks the question, 'Who is Really Crazy? The gentle souls confined to an insane asylum or the warmongers on the battlefield?'Though the actions of the actors is comedic and amusing, this can hardly be defined as a comedy. It causes one to think a great deal about a very serious subject.

3-0 out of 5 stars Small correction for Jerry McElhaney
I would just like to point out that Jamon Jamon was originally released in Europe in 1991, and that Penlope Cruz was just 17 years old at the time - not 19.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love this movie and story
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and mine runs deep with this film. A long time fan of Richard Harris I feel his role in the movie was extraordinarily well performed. I found myself siding with McCabe. Seeing his dirty hands that worked the land, toiled over it, bleed into it and made it what it was. It was his from birth and then enters an American taking it away without a thought. To build something foreign on the land as well. McCabe loved the land, the American saw a profit. I was rivited from the beginning until the bitter end.

2-0 out of 5 stars Powerfully depressing and bleak
With ordinary actors this movie would be depressing. With Richard Harris finding enormous, brilliant energy in his role as the doomed main character, it goes beyond depressing to being scorchingly, searingly upsetting. It's bleak, harrowing, dismal and severely gut-wrenching.If that's your kind of thing, this movie delivers it in spades, way more forcefully than the next ten downer flicks put together.
5-0 out of 5 stars Cows Falling Through Space (o, the huge manatee!)
I'm still not sure if this was supposed to be a comedy, but when I saw it with my drunken mob of friends back in the day, the majority of us burst out laughing at the Falling Cows and the immortal line, "We can't run off like tinkers!" Strangely enough, those of us who had ancestors directly affected by the true, historcal events of the Famine laughed loudest; whereas those of us attempting to deeply experience the pathos so that they might connect with our suffering, on-screen brethren with true, empathic feeling---well, our rolling in the aisles really ruined the evening for them. This is a very good film, but if you're not laughing by the end, there's something wrong with you; however, if you are laughing, there's something deeply wrong with you. And, by God's sanctifying grace, everyone might learn that there is something deeply wrong with all of us. I was born an original sinner... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Joie de vivre encapsulated
I first rented this movie in the 1980s from Blockbuster. It was so different, such a surprising delight, I watched it again about 10 years later. Different from anything I saw before or since.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Both Worlds!
I really enjoyed this movie. At first I thought that her two husbands were Vadinho the gambler and drunk, and Vadinho the loving husband. He was bascially two different people himself.I would have left him if I was her, though but I understand that in that time women didn't leave their husbands. Also in that time, it was not uncommon for men to have mistresses. After Vadinho's death, I was happy that Doa Flor decided to remarry, but I thought that she could've found someone more interesting than Teodoro. He's a nice guy and all, but he's just so boring. She was used to the wildlife with Vadinho, and it was a shock to her when she married Teodoro.I think that's why she gave into Vadinho when his soul returned. And since she was the only one who could see him, there was no harm in having realtions with him once again, and in the future. She was happy with both of them. She was getting the best of both worlds.I highly recommend this movie to all movie goers.

3-0 out of 5 stars What is all the excitement?
I'm only writing this review because a lot of people seem to think this is such a great movie.I wish now that I had bought the Sally Fields version. This is very amatuerishly done in my opinion. It was made nearly 30 years ago, and if you want to watch an out-of-shape soap opera star run out naked, maybe you will like it.He wasn't comical, he was just repulsive.Had he been gorgeous, maybe I would have liked it better.Save your money and buy the American version. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The worst part of being old is rememberin' when you was young.
With The Straight Story, Lynch demonstrated none of the recognizable trademarks that transformed him into the director that I love. This film felt like a "blind date" gone bad.The Straight Story showed up, David Lynch arrived, but the rest of the date felt muddled, confusing, and utterly disastrous.Everything in this film seemed wrong.Lynch's choice for lead actor, the bland Sissy Spacek, the filler of repeat cornfield montages, all the way to the incoherent time spent on the read, I just felt that nobody had control over this picture, yet the randomness (and the possible tear ending) gave critics something to smile about. This is not a David Lynch film, and for those walking into this with images of Mulholland Drive, Twin Peaks, or even Eraserhead in their mind will be utterly discombobulated. The Straight Story attempted to show us a slice of Americana via the cornfields of Iowa, but for this boy based in the Flatlands of Illinois, it just seemed repetitive and boring.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Real Gem
This movie came recommended to be by someone who in my opinion wouldn't have had the brains to appreciate it! I'm grateful to him for turning me on to one of the most perfect little gems of a movie to come along in years. I rank it right up there with THE STATION AGENT, another quiet, small picture with very little plot and oh, so much heart and soul! If you like a film that takes its own sweet time to unfold, letting you come along for the ride, then get this one. If you're looking for car chases and gunfire and special effects and all those other big-box-office necessities, then stay away and leave this for those of us who value beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Straight To The Heart
The Straight Story is film paradise; repeated viewings will only make you like it more.It is an extraordinary work of art that is as surprising as it is richly rewarding. If ever there was a case of "less is more," this is it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Murder Case Turned Eerily Kafkaesque
If the words above could be used to describe another Lynch movie - the much applauded "Lost Highway" (1997) whose plot is inspired in part by Kafka's "Die Verwandlung" and the well-known O.J. Simpson-case - they are as much descriptive of his earlier and less critically acclaimed film "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me" (1992).

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful
This is one of the most moving movies I have every seen. Albert Finney is forced by his peers to live a lie.He overcomes his homosexuality by quoting and putting on Oscar Wilde plays. No one in the movie every really does understand this complex character, very well acted by Finney.

4-0 out of 5 stars Warm and Enjoyable, if sad.
Opening like a charming and lightweight Irish comedy, A Man of No Importance eventually proves to be more of a pathos-laden drama.Along the way however, it never fails of be warm, with Albert Finney a joy as the kind yet internally tortured ticket collector Alfie, who is inspired to mount a production of Salome, by his idol Oscar Wilde.Throughout the film we are treated not only to Finney, but also loveley turns by Tara Fitzgerald as Alfie's idealised Princess Salome, and Rufus Sewell as the bus driver, dubbed "Bosie," the object of ALfie's unrequited affections. The story could deteriorate into a weepy drama, but it never does, and the conclusion, although sad, is somewhat life-affirming.A great way to spend an evening.

5-0 out of 5 stars importance is subjective
This debut from Suri Krishnamma is quite wonderful. Set in Dublin in 1963, it opens with Eartha Kitt singing "Let's Do it" and Albert Finney reading Oscar Wilde, so we know something particular is in the wind. Finney is a bus conductor who is inspired to mount a production of Salome after meeting Tara Fitzgerald. The film shows the rehearsals in the local church hall, and slowly reveals Finney's closeted sexual preference, secretly in love with someone he calls his "Bosie". What is interesting is the Vertigo relationship that develops between Finney and Fitzgerald. As her director, he recreates her the way he wishes to see her, which can be a common dynamic between certain men and the women they are obsessed with, and the situation is all the more resonant since Fitzgerald is so touching. Time allows the audience to like Finney, since at first his accent and face are off-putting. It seems he is trying too hard, but by the time he is dressed as flamboyantly as Wilde, we are won over. Brenda Fricker plays Finney's sister and is funny, but Rufus Sewell as the bus driver is unfortunately Method-y. However Krishnamma wisely removes him for a time and when he returns, we have Finney's idiot grin of happiness as a payoff. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful story.
A film that celebrates life but asks questions about what is best in life, and whether we all make the right decisions. The movie centers on an absolutely wonderful performance by a 70 -odd Marcello Mastroiani, in a role that allows him the full gamut of emotions, from great joy to terrible sadness.

4-0 out of 5 stars Yes, it's very good, but...
Most of the good things others are saying about this film are true. It's a superior production, excellent cinematography, excellent acting, excellent direction. It's amazing how so many child actors can accomplish this drama so successfully. Louis Malle was a top-rank intelligent filmmaker deserving great respect. His "My Dinner With Andre" is one of my most prized additions to my video collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Are you afraid?" "All the time."
Occasionally, a film comes along that one takes to heart so much and that seems so perfect that it's difficult not to wonder about the critical faculties of someone who doesn't see what you see in it.Saving Private Ryan and Brokeback Mountain are two recent examples that come to my mind and Louis Malle's film Au Revoir Les Enfants from 1987 is another. At the time of it's release it was heralded as the greatestFrench film in a decade and at the end of the 80's it appeared on the greatest films of the decade poll published in American Film magazine.But...there were naysayers, Pauline Kael and John Simon most prominent of them. Was the film perhaps overrated?

5-0 out of 5 stars A fun romp!
This great swashbuckler is completely underrated! Made in the style of the 1940s adventures with Tyrone Power, this film is fun and exciting and I definitely recommend it. And the cast! It's so cool to see the great Brando pass the proverbial torch to next generation actors Benecio Del Toro and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Rachel Ward is excellent as Queen Isabella and Robert Davi is superb. People expected to get a serious drama about Columbus but what they got was much more fun and for this people complain? The shots are beautiful, filmed on the open seas, and the adventure is non-stop. I watched it again this this Columbus Day- what a treat!

4-0 out of 5 stars more fun than I anticipated
Chris Columbus "get's it on" with Catherine Zeta Jones aboard his ship, charms Queen Rachel Ward, and finds himself threatened by swords, sabotage, sharks, storms, a scowling Selleck, and a very scary Brando. I loved every minute of it. The Discovery isn't a dry history lesson, but it is a damn good time.

2-0 out of 5 stars This movie could've been better.
The only reason I watched this movie was because Marlon Brando was in it.Unfortunately, the overall look of this movie has the feel of Made For Cable Movie of the Week. You'll see what I mean when you compare this to Mutiny On The Bounty or Pirates Of The Carribean. Both are better movies than this one.For Brando completists only. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars one of Almodovar's absolute BEST!
This was the first Almodovar film I'd ever seen, and it's made me a lifelong fan of his.Lately he's become a bit too serious, overreaching and melodramatic---"Bad Education" was especially disappointing---in contrast to the fascinating, gorgeous and hilarious black comedy and absurdism of masterpieces like "Matador," "Tie Me Up Tie Me Down" and "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown."It's the difference between reading Charles Bukowski at his best versus reading some pompous "The New Yorker" column.
5-0 out of 5 stars Matador Shocks You
This is an Antonio Banderas classic with Carmen Maura, Pedro Almodovar, and friends from Spain--and the scenes from Spain are beautiful. But true to Almodovar, the movie leans to the morbid and the perverse. I would not recommend Matador for people who are offended by comical gory murder scenes, and it is a pity that the movie has no English subtitles!

5-0 out of 5 stars "I've looked for you in all the men I've loved."
In "Matador" from Spanish Director, Pedro Almodovar, famous, retired bullfighter Diego Montes owns and operates a school for bullfighters. Forced into retirement due to severe and permanent injuries sustained during his last bullfight, Diego now trains young men and women. One of Diego's students--a young man named Angel--is more than a little obsessed with his famous teacher. Angel is a bit strange. He lives at home with his unpleasant, domineering mother and spies on Diego's beautiful girlfriend--a model named Eva. Angel is played by a baby-faced Antonio Banderas.Read more

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. I can't understand why it is still not available on DVD.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites
This re-telling of the well-known "Les Miserables" story is set in the bloody, painful first half of the 20th century in Europe. It opens with a scene of a gorgeous, turn-of-the-century ball, a robbery afterwards, and wrongful imprisonment. Quickly fast forward to WWII France, the Resistance and the awful plight of the Jews. Jean-Paul Belmondo is a truck driver whose decent heart leads him to hide some Jews, and his quiet courage and strength as the Nazis try to find out his secrets are amazing. As he is driving one of the Jewish escapees to freedom, the man regales him with the story of the Hugo novel, which he has never heard. The twists and turns of the story are truly bizarre and horrifying, but amazingly Claude Lelouche has made a movie of hope. The film ends with a reprise of the gorgeous ball in a very different setting. One can only sigh with satisfaction.

I really loved this film.Only reason it didn't get 5 stars is because I kept comparing it to what I think is the best english-language version (best period!) of the original tale. That would be the 1978 w/ Perkins, Jordan, Gielgud, Holm, etc.If you get that you have to get the full-length VHS version.

The bereaved father who's lost his seven year old daughter, upon visiting her grave twelve years later, finds his daughter's body perfectly preserved - just as he had left it. His fellow townspeople call the event a miracle but the town bishop wants the child reburied. The father must fight his way through political and religious obstacles to have his daughter declared a first Colombian Saint.

Elvia Duarte is just seven years old when she dies inexplicably in her father's arms. She is buried, but twelve years later, the cemetery is scheduled for renovation, and survivors of the dead are given a chance to retrieve the remains of their loved ones. Elvia's father Margarito (Frank Ramirez) exhumes Elvia's body, and it's then he discovers a miracle--her body is still perfect, soft and warm, and her hair and nails have continued to grow in the twelve years since her death. With this evidence of a miracle, Margarito cannot bear to re-bury his daughter, and soon local religious officials push him into seeking sainthood for his daughter. Seeking canonization for Elvia proves to be no simple task. Margarito takes his daughter's body from his native Columbia to Rome, and there he struggles withbureaucratic and ecclesiastical red tape.
5-0 out of 5 stars A father's love, a daughter's eternal sleep...
This is a strangely beautiful yet sensual film about the love of a father for his dead child. When a man's seven-year-old daughter suddenly dies his grief is terrible and he visits her grave regularly, finding comfort in the knowledge that he can be near to her.But after twelve years the tomb she has lain in is to be demolished so he is forced to take her body to be buried elsewhere.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Kirk's conquest!
Yes--absolutely, I agree with other reviews that it is overdubed badly and that the ending reunion of Ulysses and Penelope is a "let's get out of here" finale. And yes, the youngRosanna Podesta is witless as the young princess who discovers the shipwrecked amnesiac wanderer.

Almost half of world population speak Spanish. Why do not you edit this clasic movie with subtitles (at least) in Spanish?

3-0 out of 5 stars Fun flick...I wish someone would dig up the original 3-D
Not many people know that ULYSSES was shot in 3-D, but it only released in flat 2-D form as the craze was over by the time the film was completed. I wish someone would try to locate the original 3-D elements so we could see this film as intended! ... Read more
