5-0 out of 5 stars Most excellent adaptation
Gold was found in Alaska, the rush to obtain it required a strong constitution and many dogs to do the work that horses usually did in the states. The environment bred harsh attitudes. Also in the testing of ones mettle one finds their true potential. 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie and great dog
The reason that I purchased this movie was the fact that the dog in the movie was a Leonberger.I personally own this breed and was interested to see how they made it in the movie. It was wonderful to see the basic characteristics of the breed were NOT lost by the actions in the film. They are truly magnificent animals and this movie is a testament to them and the wonderful story that they portrayed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautifully Rendered Film Version of London's Classic Tale!
I must admit I am a Rutger Hauer fan, and have been ever since "Ladyhawke" was released in 1985.And as an English teacher, I am always looking for new videos to augment my literature units.Thissuperb version of Jack London's tale of unconditional love, survival of thefittest and London's belief that all living creatures including man arecapable of reverting to their wild beginnings has been the perfect visualcompanion to my teaching the novel "Call of the Wild" for thepast two years - and it has Rutger Hauer to boot!Exquisitely photographedin muted tones, "Call of the Wild" tells the story of Buck, thehandsome Newfoundland, who is kidnapped because of his massive size fromhis pampered life in California, and endures horrific hardships, numerousowners, and self-discovery as he is taken to man's "holy grail" -the Klondike Gold Rush.Rutger Hauer protrays John Thornton, the grizzledbut kind man who saves Buck's life and introduces Buck to the unbridled joyof unconditional love.Richard Dreyfuss narrates beautifully, giving theviewer an opportunity to actually experience bits and pieces of London'sexquisite prose.Although a number of film versions have previously beenmade, this version is by far superior! Not only is Buck accuratelyrepresented by the actual breed that London wrote about, but the screenplayfollows the story most faithfully.Except for the brief insertion of asaloon girl to romance Thornton for a moment and the minimizing of a numberof Buck's owners, this film visually portrays the fear and growth andfinally the trust and love that Buck experiences.I do recommend, however, that to fully experience the depth of London's metaphor, the book should beread! It is an excellent way for children to understand that films comefrom the written word and to possibly help "turn them on" toreading.Additionally, although the story depicts cruelty to animals whichis an important element in London's plot, the film exhibits a largedisclaimer at the beginning of the movie explaining that absolutely noanimals were harmed in the making of the film.As an avid animal lover andadvocate, I could NOT have viewed nor could I recommend the film if thishad not been done. However even if the book is not read, this is anoutstanding adventure film suitable for the family. After viewing, youmight even start a discussion with your children about greed, love andsacrifice! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A flesh and blood depiction of the renowned prognosticator
Working from the sketchy historical details that are known about him, and taking a certain amount of dramatic license, the film "Nostradamus" chronicles the life of Michel de Nostredame (Tcheky Karyo), who came to be known more for his prophecies than for his work as a physician and an apothecary toiling against the ravages of plague-decimated 16th Century Europe.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Historical Dramatization
The movie is excellent; however, many of the previously written reviews are disappointing. The writer of the script and director of the movie did a wonderful job of giving us not only a historical context for this enigma of a man but also an idea of what his personal life must have been like.I don't know what some critcs expect, considering all information on the personal life of Nostradamus is sketchy at best, but bringing him to life in this movie was extremely entertaining and informative if one knows how to "read between the lines" in a historical drama.Furthermore, as to the expectation of Nostradamus "doing something" with his visions, I would recommend a rigorous study of European history during the centuries of the Holy Inquisition.Anyone "seeing things" most certainly needed to keep his mouth shut!Nostradamus demonstrated great courage writing about his visions at all, hence, the complicated structure.I would very much like to see this movie on DVD; I would buy it immediately!

Editorial Review

"I foresee a glittering future for your daughter," the conspiratorial Duke of Northumberland insidiously whispers to the mother of Lady Jane Grey, the woman who would be England's queen, albeit for only nine days. The same could be said for Helena Bonham Carter, who, in her screen debut, carries this historical drama with aplomb. Jane, a principled and precocious 15-year-old (she reads Plato in Greek) was a pawn in a plot to maintain Protestant rule in the wake of young King Edward's death. A dashing Cary Elwes, anticipating his swashbuckling role in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Heartfelt Production
On its own terms, this movie is a winner. Why is it that totally true to history or not, actors today cannot be this believable. The performances are universally convincing. Made in 1985,why is it that everyone in this movie put their heart into their performance, and thus I was mesmerized and delighted. When you shed a tear for these young people caught up in the tragedy of political manipulation,it will be no more than the tears of these young actors,so convincing and so deeply rendered. How I wish I could own twenty films like this one!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not Historical, But A Reminder of Romeo and Juliet
I can remeber being a little over eight years old the first time I saw this movie. While I didn't understand it then, I found that the music and the scenery was breath taking. Seeing this movie years later along with other great's such as Young Bess and Mary Queen of Scots, Helena Carter's and Cary Elwes performance's are right up there with such great names as Stuart Granger and Jean Simmons. I would recommend this movie if you like period piece movies, but like I said, don't take into account that the history is a little jumbled, just enjoy it for the tragic history that is burried underneath the plot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jane Grey fan
I own this film on VHS and it's one of the jewels of my collection.I've been a Tudor fan and a Lady Jane Grey fan ever since I watched "The Six Wives of Henry VIII" on CBS in the summer of 1971.I first saw "Lady Jane" in 1986 in the theater and never forgot it.Yes, the movie's not accurate in its depiction of Jane Grey and Guilford Dudley, but I was so happy to finally see a movie about her that it didn't bother me, and the couple's ultimate fate was devastating; it resonated deeply with me.I loved the film then and I love it now (especially with Patrick Stewart in a supporting role as Jane's father, Duke Henry Grey). ... It's funny, sweet, and sad all rolled into one.The interweaving of the stories was great. In addition to the movie, the bonus features are very interesting.

4-0 out of 5 stars Loved it anyway
The funny thing about this movie is that I read negative reviews here, and agree with what they assert: that the plots and characters are not very "evolved." If you disect the movie, yes this is "true."
5-0 out of 5 stars "I really don't know clouds at all"
This is one of my absolute favorite movies for so many reasons. While some of the story lines are simple, others will stay with you even after the movie ends.If for no other reason, watch this to see the scene of Emma Thompson in her bedroom. It's absolutely devastating. There is no other word.I've never seen such better song placement in a movie thanJoni Mitchell's, "Both Sides Now" .The extra footage of the director talking on the DVD is also very interesting. This is also one of my fave soundtracks. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Good Wine
I have been a fan of Zhang Yimou's films since 1999 when I first watched his 1991 film Raise The Red Lantern for my East Asian Novel class, and since then I have watched several other of his films such as Not One Less, To Live, The Road Home, Happy Times, and Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles. Each one of his films brings something new to the table and delves into such issues as urban/rural conflicts, political corruption, and Japan-China relations. Red Sorghum is Zhang Yimou's first film as a director and while it may be a bit simpler than many of his later films it contains elements that almost every fan of his films will be familiar with: beautiful settings, very fleshed out characters, and moments of conflict where those who possess little power are overwhelmed by larger forces. Also, Red Sorghum is Gong Li first film, and it is nice to see that even at such a young age, 21, that she already possessed on screen charisma that can really grip the viewer's heart. While not as masterful as her performances in To Live or Chen Kaige's Farewell My Concubine, her tears and iron core are still quite moving.
5-0 out of 5 stars A pastoral epic!
The bold portrait of the humble village wine makers against the interloping Japanese forces. An enigmatic and brave film that marks the ascending and meteoric career of Yimou Zang. Winner of the Silver Bear 1988, and one of my Fifty top choices of that Decade.

5-0 out of 5 stars HILARIOUS!
I`m not usually a movie fan but this is brilliant. I think Frank Grogan (Peter Caffrey) stole the show as he played brilliantly the role of the worlds most talkative hostage!Brendan Gleeson and Peter McDonald also putup excellent displays. By far the funniest scene as pointed out below iswhen Bunny and Git are breaking into the house in the forest.I nearly wetmyself with laughter at that scene!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!
For those of you who enjoy European comedies, this is an excellent choice! Adjusting to the accents takes a little work, but once you've got it down, the movie sails along, cracking you up all the way. I found it much funnierand more entertaining than "Full Monty" which got rave reviews.I'd put it more along the lines of "Waking Ned Devine" in thehumor department, though obviously more hard edged. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars great independent irish flick
Being a fan of smaller movies, I didn't know quite what to expect from this one.But after having viewed it, I quickly added it to my favorites list. While the plot isn't all that original, the performances are justgreat (especially Brendan Gleason). The scene just before Git and Bunnybreak into the house, where Bunny shows Git how to convincingly hold a gunand when they divy up the masks (Gleason's line, "Mine's the only kewlone," just had me rolling) immediately made me want to rewind and seeit again.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BURMESE HARP
Director Kon Ichikawa made a truly great movie, especially considering that this anti-war movie was made not long after the end of the second world war. [1956 release] Having read quite a bit about the Pacific theatre of war as an undergraduate, I came to appreciate this movie about how the trauma of this horrible war affected one Japanese soldier. The soldier becomes spiritually obsessed with burying as many Japanese war dead that he comes across in his journey throughout the country of Burma. And he vows to remain in Burma until he has accomplished this task [a very formidabale task!] The fact that this Cinematic masterpiece is only available on VHS, not DVD, does not detract from the richness of the movie. I rank this movie right up there with "PATHS OF GLORY," as my two most favorite anti-war movies ever made. A must see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting Japanese anti war film!
At the end of the WW2, a survivor of a Japanese Command, follows his bliss when he takes a decision: to disguise himself as a monk . He will make a reflexive tour, a powerful insight act, a soul searching journey soul searching backto those places where his fellow comrades met the death. This redemption fact once more completes the mythical cycle of the life: birth and innocence, maturity and experience and finally wisdom and redemption.
5-0 out of 5 stars Come Japan, come England, Burma is Buddha's country
At the beginning of this long film the audience sees a spectatcular view red dirt and red mountains of Burma, which is very significant because, if one is familiar with Buddhist tradition, the dust symbollizes the mortal world of suffering and it represents what one wants to brush off if one desires to follow the path of the Buddha. After seeing the bleak terrain, the audience is introduced to a small contigent of soldiers led by Captain Inoue a former music teacher. In order to keep his troops spirits up, the Captain teaches his men how to sing with varying degrees of success. His most gifted soldier is Mizushima, who has taught himself how to play a Burmese Harp which he has mastered quite skillfully.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I think that this is the best Pink Panther film that I've seen. Although I've only seen this one, A Shot In The Dark, and The Pink Panther {2006}. This film has incredible slapstick comedy by Peter Sellers. Starring Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, David Niven as Sir Charles Lytton, Robert Wagner as George Lytton, Capucine as Simone Clouseau, Brenda De Banzie as Angela Dunning, Colin Gordon as Tucker,Claudia Cardinale as Princess Dala, and The Pink Panther as himself. I can't wait to see the other ones. Well, that was my review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Delightful comedy classic
Blake Edwards' THE PINK PANTHER has held up well over the years. It is, of course, the start of one of the funniest and most popular comedy series of all time. However, while the subsequent films focus on the antics of bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau (Peter Sellers), Clouseau is almost a supporting character in this film. Most of the focus is placed on Sir Charles Lytton (David Niven), an irresistible middle-aged bachelor who is secretly "The Phantom", a world-famous jewel thief. He decides to steal the Pink Panther diamond, the most valuable jewel in all the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars As powerful, universal and revealing of humanity as any trilogy of Greek tragedies
This story stands on its own write as inevitable Grecian tragedy building on the prideful ignorance of Jean, the main character. He does not know of the spring which was blocked and concealed by the neighbor who desires not only his land to grow chrysthanthemums upon, but one day when she blooms, his daughter Manon. With the conspiracy of friends, this covetous neighbor blocks the spring which would bring life and fertility to the farm. Jean tries everything including tragically dynamite to bring the waters to flow with abundant life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Greed in a Small Town
I have a general rule when it comes to Gerard Depardieu, if he's playing sexy then pass but if he's playing a character then keep.
5-0 out of 5 stars Old Mac Le Papet had a farm ...
This movie has the simple feel of a provincial or pastoral folktale. A farmer, Le Papet (played by Yves Montand) and his nephew, Ugolin (Daniel Auteuil) scheme against the city inheritor, Jean Cadoret (Gerard Depardieu) of a neighboring farm, keeping secret from him the whereabouts of a hidden spring. Ugolin wants the land to grow flowers on; Jean has plans for breeding rabbits and growing vegetables. Jean comes with his books and statistics about crops and the weather; he has faith in his knowledge, but believes in God's providence, too. He is a hunchback as well, which only adds to our sympathies. A drought comes and sure enough the lack of water ruins him and the farm is sold to Ugolin. But Jean's little daughter learns of the spring just before they leave, which sets up the action for the sequel: MANON OF THE SPRING.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Tour De Force Performance by Vanessa Redgrave
I love Vanessa Redgrave and her ability to perform and bring to life, the late and beloved and controversial dancer, Isadora Duncan. Her relationships with men were quite interesting with Isaac Singer of the Sewing machine empire and the Russian. Vanessa manages to capture the role so superbly that the time flies by so fast. It would have been nice to see Dame Ellen Terry who was the grandmother to her two children in the film but sadly the life of Isadora Duncan was met with tragedy. American actress Cynthia Harris better known for playing Helen Hunt's mother on Mad About You has a supporting role.

Editorial Review

Pedro Almodovar broke into the art-house mainstream with this wild, manic comedy about a gaggle of women and their various problems with men, be they married lovers, cheating husbands, fiancés, or terrorists. Almodovar's long-time leading lady, Carmen Maura, stars as an actress (famed for her laundry detergent commercial as the mother of a sloppy serial killer) who's just been dumped by her married lover. In the midst of trying to track him down for a face-to-face confrontation, she crosses paths with her lover's son (Antonio Banderas), his unbalanced wife (Julieta Serrano), and his new girlfriend (Kiti Manver). Adding more fuel to the fire is the hapless friend(Maria Barranco) who got involved with a Shiite terrorist and is now being hunted by the police. Almodovar, a master of farcical screwball comedy, manages to keep all these balls in the air in dizzy, hilarious style without once losing his momentum. Chock full of the director's over-the-top stylization, in terms of both story and sets, the film is a hilarious yet heartfelt marriage of kitsch and drama, verging on parody but never going entirely over the top. Maura is absolutely breathtaking as the unhinged lover, dispensing wise advice to others while trying to keep a semblance of sanity, and the supporting cast is quintessential Almodovar, including a brief but memorable turn by Banderas in what could have been a bland, go-nowhere role. Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 1989. Read more

`Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown'written and directed by Spaniard Pedro Almodovar has been described by some other reviewers as a `screwball comedy'. I generally agree with this assessment, except that compared to the greatest of this genre, for example, `Bringing Up Baby' with Katherine Hepburn and Cary Grant, this effort is just a bit weak, primarily in the weaknesses of the male protagonists, who generally make short appearances, largely as a means to introduce the various stressed out women of the story, of which there are four or five, depending on how you count them.

This 1968 oddity is probably a film only a total Beatlemaniac couldlove, but it carries both musical and historical resonance. It also givesintimations of what would happen in the next 30 years as artists gained more andmore power over how they were presented. The roots of virtually any rock star'svanity project (including Prince's Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Beatles Hit the Road With Aunt Jessica And Friends
I like the eleven Beatles music scenes that are essentially pre-MTV music videos. Unfortunately, the remainder of the program, which mainly features "Aunt Jessica", will give you nightmares. They should have provided an option to play only the Beatles music scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars you will love it if your a true beatles fan
the magical mystery tour is amazing the beatles are psycadelic masterminds obviously you dont watch the movie how its supoused to be watched...on drugs.thats how they ment it to be watched i love the movie it is really trippy and i think its trippyier than yellow sub. but dont get me wrong the yellow sub has a plot and a good story line and is a better all around movie.but if your watching it for how it was sposed to be watched youd like m.m.t

3-0 out of 5 stars "Take a guess!"
"Magical Mystery Tour" is a 50 minute or so TV special that the Beatles shot and directed in 1967, and originally was shown on Boxing Day in that year in England. John, Paul, George, Ringo and his aunt take a tourist bus around England, a ride where anything can happen, and some of that anything does. The many adventures they have include a foot and car race, watching a movie in a tent bigger on the inside than the outside, a stripshow, and a singalong on the accordion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Trippy...
A few years before this movie came out, a movie called "Tommy" came out. This movie took the concept album of The Who's "Tommy" and transferred it to the big-screen, using only music and absolutely no dialogue to further the story along. I never turn off a movie, no matter how bad I think it is. Except "Tommy." In reality, the film wasn't bad...It just annoyed me. There was a huge lack of entertainment going on. I wasn't expecting much from The Wall, but I've heard so many good things about it. I had to see it. Let me say, I haven't heard a lot of Pink Floyd stuff. I've only listened to four albums (Umma Gumma, Dark Side of the Moon, Atom Heart Mother, and Wish You Were Here). Yes, that's right. I haven't even heard The Wall album. This film is simalar to Tommy in the fact that Pink Floyd's music plays throughout the film. The difference is, there is some dialogue in the film although it doesn't move the plot along at all. The other difference is, this film has amazing visuals and is fun to watch. The movie's plot is basically a rock star named Pink (Bob Geldof) sits watching a war movie and begins to remember his childhood. Blended in is memories, fantasies, and a bunch of other [...] that results in one trippy movie to watch. But, as I said, the visuals are what keep you watching. The movie's metaphors (especially the title one) are very smart, the script is by Roger Waters (although I don't know how a person could write a script like this). If you're a Floyd fan/arty kinds of films, check this out for sure. All movies, in my opinion, are forms of art...But this film is actually like a work of art. Anyway, if you're just a moviegoer looking for some entertainment on a Saturday night...This isn't the movie for you.
4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE BUT DVD LACKS A BIT
Great Movie ! Can't argue that but the DVD lets it down a bit. The menu items do not work properly unless the dvd i bought is faulty? Nice cover though.

4-0 out of 5 stars A cheap price to pay for memories
Staying over at my house in high school almost always meant The Wall would make its way to the VCR. Not only because it was a great movie, but also because it had been stolen from every video store in town. By the time I was out of high school, the tape was literally worn out, and the weekly viewings had ceased.

5-0 out of 5 stars Please re-release the DVD already!
Needless to say, I love this movie (and Jean de Florette.) I would just like to say that if anyone has bought the rights to it (Criterion?), kindly release it already, since these movies have been out of print for years now. Available used from $90. Get outta here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awkward, disappointing ending
I was shocked to see that at the end of the movie this freedom-loving woman is pregnant, dressed in a decent ladylike outfit, in a church. Is that the fate of all wild shepherdesses? What a disappointing ending.I was hoping that Manon would remain free for a few more years instead of plunging into traditional domesticity. That ending undermines the whole movie.
