5-0 out of 5 stars Little Things Mean A Lot
Once in a while a unique film comes along that touches the heart strings. The EIGHTH DAY will make you laugh and make you cry.It has been compared to the French version of RAIN MAN.However, it is not similar at all unless you make extreme comparisons to the physical disparity, Down's Syndrome, that George, one of the main characters, possesses to that of Dustin Hoffman's Autism and his friend,Harry, a father-like figure, to Tom Cruise's character.Other than that, that's where the comparisons end.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spanish vacation
Having spent my recent vacation in Spain, and having attended a flamengo dance performance in Sevilla (without bringing a recorder)I was glad finding this DVD. The music is of course highly authentic and I much enjoyed it. After a while though it becomes "all of the same thing" and starts to bore you. I ejected this DVD after 45 minutes or so. Nevertheless I do recommend purchasing it especially if you want to have an immediately accessable " souvenir" of your visit to Spain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare opportunity to see the greats!
While this performance is choreographed, hence not 100% authentic Canté Gitano, this is a very rare opportunity to see many of the great people of flamenco in one place. Carlos Saura has brought together people of the likes of Moraito Chico, Fernanda de Utrera, Manolo Sanlúcar, Manuel Agujetas, Paco del Gastor, Chocolate, Farruco, Farruquito, Tomasa la Macanita, Tomatito, etc, etc!
4-0 out of 5 stars For flamenco lovers!
Saura is always very good at stories about the world of dance and this one is a real must for those who admire flamenco. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nonplussed for Life
People jumping around like monkeys. Tall dignified monkeys, or lowly grimy monkeys, but monkeys none the less. Melodramatic, affected monkeys bopping around papery, evenly lit sets, with occasional exterior establishing shots. Stage acting? Silent film acting? Who cares. The activity of a scene ends and suddenly the lighting jumps 3 shades brighter, because they have inserted another film layer for a slowly cross-fading transition to the next scene. Yes, its one of those.
5-0 out of 5 stars "I hope his soul is quieter than mine.."
Critics lambasted Kirk Douglas' performance as "hammy".I don't see that at all. This is, without a doubt, the Vincent Van Gogh that we read in "Letters To Theo" miraculously brought to life.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Cinematic Portrait.
Released theatrically in 1956, "Lust for Life" remains one of the finest films about an artist, in this case the great Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. With his keen eye for colour, Vincente Minnelli was the ideal choice to direct this handsome film for MGM. Based on the best selling novel by Irving Stone, "Lust for Life" must have been a real treat to see on the big screen in all its Cinemascope and Metrocolor glory.

Editorial Review

Stanley Kubrick's striking visual interpretation of Anthony Burgess'sfamous novel is a masterpiece.Malcolm McDowell delivers a clever, tongue-in-cheek performance as Alex, the leader of a quartet of droogs, a vicious group of young hoodlums who spend their nights stealing cars, fighting rival gangs, breaking into people's homes, and raping women. While other directors would simply exploit the violent elements of such a film without subtext, Kubrick maintains Burgess's dark, satirical social commentary. We watch Alex transform from a free-roaming miscreant into a convict used in a government experiment that attempts to reform criminals through an unorthodox new medical treatment. The catch, of course, is that this therapy may be nothing better than a quick cure-all for a society plagued by rampant crime.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ahead of it's time, Excellent Kubrick Film
First off, this was not an easy bood to make into a movie, but Stanly Kubrick did an excellent job of doing so, not cutting out too many of the details either. This movie was way ahead of it's time, with excellent cinemetography, great acting, and excellent adaptation to script of a book that tells a tale of young Alex and his gang in a world he live raise "ultraviolence".A nice glimpse into the mind of an Antisocial.Rent this, Buy this, worth owning. One of the many of a series of Excellent Kubrick films of the 70's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Second movie in a very special trilogy.
I ama fan of Stanley Kubrick, and I can see something very special about this movie, that makes me consider this one as the second installment of a so called, by myself, "trilogy". 2001: A Space Odyssey, Clockwork Orange & The Shining, they three share a feeling of loneliness, a sense of an external consciousness who is watching, from outside the Universe, the characters in the films, there is a feeling of a paranormal environment, manifest by the lighting, the sharp contrast of colors white, blue, red and fog in some of the scenes. And, this special environment is made even more surreal by the very special soundtracks of "Atmospheres" by Gyorgy Ligeti , "Timesteps" by Wendy Carlos, or thescore in The Shining by Carlos' couple too. Perhaps these three stories are part of the intervention of the Black Monoliths on the development of Mankind...Who knows? Buy these movies, they are highly recommended.
4-0 out of 5 stars great film by kubrick but what else is new
this film is a has a very nice story about a man named alex who loves to rape woman and fighting/stealing,but that all changes when he goes to jail. then while in jail he hears about a thing that a doctor is doing to stop people from being bad. so later the doctor picks alex to be like a ginny pig for this test. he is forced to watch horrable things while hes eyes are forced open. after getting these test alex can one longer be bad because if he does he gets real sick..

5-0 out of 5 stars Suitable to warp young minds....
I rented this film in my youth, and after I had watched it, left it downstairs next to the VCR.My younger sister popped it in, and I heard a mouthful from my older brother about how she shouldn't have been watching it, and I shouldn't have been watching it.Well, it's too late, I already did watch it, and my mind is now officially warped, hehehehe...My brother would freak out at other early favorites of mine, like Joe's Garage and Trout Mask Replica, but he was OK.As for this film, I love Ken Russell's work.He was on fire in the 1970's, and it's a shame that he hasn't really made a great film since Altered States. This film really has nothing to do with Franz Liszt (or Richard Wagner), but it's still a marvel to look at and to listen to.Great stuff. Now, how about a DVD?

4-0 out of 5 stars A disgrace Warner persist on VHS.
Indispensable, cult-status Ken Russel movie (not only for fans of The Who), that masterfully captures and subversively portrays on screen classical piano player/composer Frantz Liszt's personality: a legendary genious of a man whose life and times match that of a Rock star, 100 years before Rock was invented. If Glen Gould is the flamboyant 20th century classical piano player that rocked an establishment, just watch this movie to compare the original Master on his heyday.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ken Russell All The Way: Rocky Horror Picture Show Style
Ken Russell was at least providing mainstream audiences with a slice of music history- Franz Liszt, still regarded as the most extraordinary pianist ever born. He was not only prolific, but composed music that is extremely difficult to play- often feeling like the pianist must have more than ten fingers. Yes, during the 19th century, and in his youth, Liszt was a sex icon and had a following which can accurately be compared to that of a modern pop or rock artist. Yes, Franz Liszt had a fallig out with Richard Wagner, and yes Wagner was a big time German nationalist Aryan Supremacist and rotten apple (brilliant composer and love his music though). Russell is famous for suffusing his films with vulgarity, excessive flamboyance and out of this world cinematography. This one is a follow-up to the wildly successful rock opera Tommy and for a film, his most lavish and crazy spectacle a la Rocky Horror Picture Show. I didn't like it one bit but it is campy and will always have a following much like Rocky Horror Picture Show or Barbarella. Like thos movies, which are adult by the way and should never be watched by children- are best viewed late at night. What to watch for: a giant phallic monument which is worshipped in a bizarre ritual, a pipe organ that becomes a spaceship which ultimately saves the earth from a Frankenstein-Hitler monster, lots of musical numbers straight from rock opera/Broadway- Rocky Horror Picture Show type of stuff. Cameos include Ringo Starr as the Pope. It's mostly British humor (irreverant humor) but American audiences would eat it up just as easily.

4-0 out of 5 stars Open's Your Eyes
This movie is a real eye opener. Set to a high octane techno soundtrack, Lola (Franka Potente) must help her boyfriend Manni get 100,000 or his life will be in grave danger. There are three scenarios of what can/could happen, and it's an eye opener because it shows how easily your life can change in a matter of minutes. I definitely recommend it!

4-0 out of 5 stars No, there's no cause and effect here
For me, this movie got off on the wrong foot when it posed a question and left us hanging for the answer. It basically asked us what the one question in life is, and what that answer is, then suggested that both the question and answer were obvious, and left it there without providing its answers.I could have done without that bit of annoying stupidity.
5-0 out of 5 stars High octane adrenaline rush for the eyes...
`Run Lola Run' is like `Groundhog Day' on speed, with maybe a hit of `Kill Bill, Vol. 1' in there for good measure. It follows Lola (Potente) as she races to get 100,000 deutschemarks for her boyfriend Manni (Bleibtreu) who is in debt to a seedy gangster with no patience or mercy. She has twenty minutes to do so and what makes this film unique is that it is very time conscious.Tom Tykwer accurately takes twenty minutes (or VERY close to) with each of Lola's attempts to save her boyfriend.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The roadblocks of a stubborn and guilty bureaucracy."
Director Michael Verhoeven's film "The Nasty Girl" is the story of Sonja (Lena Stolze). Raised in the small Bavarian town of Pfilzing, she attends convent school. Apart from the odd flash of naughty behaviour, she's a good girl--tidy, quiet, and studious, so it comes as no surprise when she enters an essay competition and wins first place. With her model essay "Freedom in Europe" Sonja wins a holiday in France. Later, Sonja is encouraged to enter a second essay competition, and she selects the topic "My Hometown During the Third Reich."
5-0 out of 5 stars a brilliant comedy about the sad truth
A beautiful film, funny, whitty, but yet - sad. The heroine says that you have to know where you are cdoming from, so that you will also know where you are going.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hooray For All Nasty Girls
This film by Michael Verhoeven is about a Bavarian schoolgirls's (Sonya) quest to find out the truth behind her small village's history and involvement behind the Third Reich. The film gives a chilling depiction of how partriarchal institutions and powerful individuals in control will use any means to neutralize any seroius threats brought against them. Surprisingly enough, Nasty Girl is one of few films that depict a woman as being single-mindedly obsessed by the pursuit of the facts. This kind of discourse has always been reserved for males. Several times Sonya is almost diverted from her quest by the temptations society dangles in front of women to keep us in our places. Sonya even receives this kind of pressure from her own husband.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Crucial cuts make a mess
After waiting for some time for this to be issued on tape, my disapointment knows no bounds.
1-0 out of 5 stars A complete waste of time
With a story like The Count of Monte Cristo, you'd think even the most inept filmmaker couldn't go far wrong. Not so. Even Richard Chamberlain's good looks and mellow voice can't rescue this bland and lifeless film, especially not with that ghastly haircut. If you want to let your eyes glaze over for a while, ask a boring neighbor to show you his vacation videos. You'll be showing kindness to a fellow human being that way, instead of wasting your money on this drivel.

5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite movie
I can't wait for the Richard Chamberlain edition of the movie to be available on DVD. I hope they fix the one problem that exists on the VHS - the semaphore station man says "you insult me sir, but it is an insult..." which makes no sense. These additional words were in the movie the first time I watched it but are not on the VHS - "...I can live with." He takes the money and sends the bogus message.

I really love this movie, but only view it every few years, like a fine wine that is savored on special occasions. Every viewing evokes in me a sublime and bittersweet floodgate of angst and nostalgia that only someone who was young in the late 60s and early 70s could understand.

I consider this movie a must see for one category of people and a don't waste your time for another category.I predict that eventually, this movie will become a valued "one-of-a-kind" classic which will long outlast many of the classics of the 80's and 90's. 4-0 out of 5 stars "A Sherman Can Give You a Very Nice Edge.."
"Kelly's Heroes" is an odd, yet quite enjoyable war movie. This 1970's comedic, cinematic take on WWII, mixes genres such as the suicide mission/action film, the crime/caper film and the army comedy. In other words, take a lot of "The Dirty Dozen", mix a bit of "Ocean's 11" and add in some "M*A*S*H" plus "Catch-22" and you'll have "Kelly's Heroes". The film features a battered U.S. Army infantry unit, which has been on the front lines since landing at Omaha Beach. All they have on there minds is a little R&R, that includes booze & broads. That is until Pvt. Kelly (Clint Eastwood) interrogates (with a bottle of brandy) a captured German intelligence officer, who tells him about a Nazi convoy transporting 16 million dollars worth of gold bars. Kelly hatches a plan for his unit to go thirty miles into enemy held territory and steal the gold from a small French bank, that is being vigorously guarded by three Nazi 'Tiger' tanks. I know in this day and age it might sound rather odd, but this is one war movie, that is not only suspenseful, but is also a whole lot of fun! Is it an accurate portrayle of WWII? Probably not. (I doubt there were too many hippie tank commanders during the "Big One") This 1970 release pretty much through its' hilarious, sharp scripthas more of a Vietnam era mentality, which satiracally makes fun of both the army and it's attitudes about war. Unlike the John Wayne style war films of the past, these guys are hardly trying to be patriotic heroes, but they are just trying to make it through the war with their a**'s intact (and maby make a little profit on the side). The film features a large, talented cast, some of whom, were already stars and others, who later went on to become big names in both television and film. This includes Clint Eastwood, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, Caroll O'Connor, Gavin MacLeod, Stuart Margolin, Harry Dean Stanton and Len Lesser (Uncle Leo from TV's "Seinfeld"). How can you go wrong with a cast like that? If your in the mood for a good action picture with some big laughsmixed in, then I would highly recommend Kelly's Heroes".

3-0 out of 5 stars flawed but good overall
Many reviews are billing this as a funny World War II film. I'm not sure I agree, if only because 1) I don't remember laughing one time, and 2) its attempts at humor are interspersed with scenes of grave seriousness. Regardless, not a bad movie, but various devices leave you scratching your head and wondering why they bothered to put that in the film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why do they need words for?
"The Passion of Joan of Arc" is a silent film in black and white, directed by Carl Theodor Dreyer (1889-1968). It is not exactly the kind of movie I usually rent, but it is excellent, and I certainly don't regret having watched it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Best movie ever made.Period.
Even after seeing this film over 20 times it still has an enormous emotinal impact on the viewer. It's hard to feel like you are watching a movie because of the performance of Maria Falconetti.I once read a reviewer call this the best single job of acting in a movie, wich I could not believe having seen many movies in my life.I'm here to tell you that this is the greatest acting I have seen. The changes in expressions on her face and eyes are so devastating Maria Falconetti creates a Joan of Arc you will never forget. The look in her eyes will remain with you for days after.
3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful film, but a historical mess
I agree with all the reviewers regarding the beauty of this film.It is indeed stunning to behold.Nonetheless, I find it extremely ftrustrating that most works about Joan D'Arc change history and the facts about her character for "artistic merit." Indeed, her story is even more amazing than any film has dared to approach.Though this film was definately a better portrayel of her than the awful "the Messenger," it is still nothing like the real Joan. The film (obviously in attempt to pull emotion) portrays her as weepy and in constant dismay. The documents of the trial however indicate she is clever, charismatic, unwilling to compromise, and unbending in her mission and principles.Would you expect anything less from a 17 year old girl who is able to convince sexist medieval France to let her lead armies?Come on!In fact, she was so rock solid, she kept humilating the judges and theologians. At a trial many years previous a judge was so impresed with her, he called her a "marvelous child."The second major problem is the major historical mistakes. She was not put on trial by Orthodox theologians or the Roman Catholic Church, as many people mistakenly believe. She was put on trial by a specific group of theologians that were loyal to the British and one in particular that wanted the seat of an Archbishop. They did NOT want Rome to know about the trial and kept it secret from Rome because they knew she would be deemed innocent.Sure, they were Catholics, but they were renegade Catholics operating outside of the church (which was why Rome negated her excommunication only within a few decades of the trials).Indeed, Joan had asked to go to Rome to be put on trial because the Pope would surely have found her innocent.Furthermore, the Church had actually given permission for her to dress like a man. Most importantly, these unloyal theologians did not really consider her to be a "witch."All the charges were trumped up, mainly because this one theologian wanted the seat of the Archbishop.Messy, messy, messy.Directors and writers are truly narcissistic for thinking they can do a better job of telling her story, rather than relying on the truth (which is infinately more amazing).Somebody please do Joan justice!! ... John Cassavetes's long, free-form drama is best appreciated as a good showcase for Gena Rowlands, playing a woman whose sanity literally appears to be shattering as different aspects of her personality eclipse others at various times. Peter Falk plays her struggling, blue-collar husband, trying to understand the phenomenon and sometimes losing his patience. As with most of Cassavetes's works as a director, one can't help but find one's attention drifting in and out (especially at two and a half hours), but Rowland's performance is a key reason the film has been declared a "national treasure" by the Library of Congress. 5-0 out of 5 stars An American Masterpiece
There's not much else to say about Cassvetes' film other than it's a masterpiece of the dramatic arts. Unrelenting and fascinating, it depicts a young wife's descent into madness. It's a bitter slice of life, but it's also exactly that: life captured in all its pain and glory through artistry of the highest order. Gena Rowland's performance is probably one of the finest ever captured on film. If you enjoy this film, I also recommend tracking down "The Pumpkin Eater" starring Anne Bancroft - a similar film of a woman driven to breakdown by the cruel informalities of what we call love. Handled with sleek overtones of British filmmaking during the 60s, it may stand as a counterpoint to the gritty reality of America's great "Woman Under the Influence."

3-0 out of 5 stars Has Cassavetes ever watched a Cassavetes film?
Mabel is suffering a mental breakdown. This movie follows her disturbance, her family dealing with it, and her subsequent return in order to show an unconventional and more true-to-life account of mental image. A lot of it is claustrophobic and irritating, but it's one of those movies of which one can't deny its powers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Agreed....stellar
Absolutely criminal that this, along with other Nanni Moretti films, are not available on dvd here in the states. This is an absolute stunning piece of work, one that I cannot get tired of watching, no matter how many times I view it.As an avid Vespa and Lambretta collector myself, I am a bit biased as well. But, that aside, it's fantastic and has the proverbial Moretti mark throughout. The scene with Jennifer Beals is priceless and worthy of whatever you have to do to see it.
5-0 out of 5 stars What a Joy to watch over and over again
This is one of my favorite movies -- a joy to watch repeatedly, especially the opening scenes riding through Rome on his Vespa and his hysterical take on families dominated by their children.
