Shot on location in numerous countries, this ambitious Wim Wendersfantasy takes Sam Neill, Solveig Dommartin, William Hurt, and a ragtag group in pursuit around the world and back again. Though set in 1999 under the shadow of impending disaster as a wobbly nuclear satellite threatens to Chernobyl the planet, the leisurely gait of their worldwide escapades has a distinctly '40s-era decadence. The ultimate object of their quest is a machine that records visual information from one person and reconstructs it in the brains of others--granting the miraculous power of sight to the blind for one thing, but even more mystically, enabling a person's dreams to be recorded. When the film seeks resolutions on the most intimate questions of the human soul which dovetail with the possibility of a destroyed world, the film is hampered by the VHS running time, which subtracts several hours from the laser disc version. But numerous joys, not least among them Jeanne Moreau and Max von Sydow as Hurt's parents, inhabit this thought-provoking film. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I love it even though it's long
Just in case others are interested... it sounds unlikely that a US DVD will ever happen. For more info: http://wim-wenders.com/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=250
5-0 out of 5 stars an underappreciated classic
It is simply baffling that this film is not available on DVD.It is a classic and beautiful film...raising the bar for what other artist directors can aspire towards.Invest the effort to track this film down and be rewarding with a new, wider horizon in your life.

Back in the 90s, I knew there was a new movie that U2 was providing the music for and I said great, can't wait to see it.Then I saw it... the US cut of Until the End of the World. And I said what? Why did I want to see this piece of crap?It made NO sense at all.

A conventional boy-and-his-horse story set against the red rocks of remote Australian mountains. (If there's a wide-screen edition, grab it. The scenery is one of the movie's strongest features.) Tom Burlinson is Jim Craig, a young man left stranded after his father's death who is struggling to save the family farm. He proves his manhood during a hair-raising hunt over the wooded slopes in search of an escaped stallion. This movie KNOCKED ME OUT!
4-0 out of 5 stars Erratic Sound Problem
This is a wonderful movie which is why I replaced my VCR tape copied from TV by buying it as a DVD.Unfortunately, the sound is a major problem. Every time the scenes changed from dialogue to music or action such as thundering horses, calamitous weather, etc. the volume rose to a shreiking crescendo. It required constant volume adjustment to be able to watch the film comfortably.I don't recall this being such a glaring problem on the VCR copy. Perhaps sound is now mixed for the younger people who suffer hearing loss from the music (I use that term loosely) of their times, but if so, I don't see how they can make out the dialogue. This problem is not limited to just this DVD of course, but it spoiled an otherwise beautiful film.

2-0 out of 5 stars What Were They Thinking??
Okay, I got this movie at the library. Now everybody told it was horrible, but I had to see it myself. I've only just flicked through a couple of the scenes, but what I have seen is enough. First of all, most of the sets that I've seen are AWFUL! For example, watch the "Jacob and Sons/Joseph's Dreams" scene. It looks like it was a computer graphic! Is it? Why? Also, the costumes! Why is the narrator in sneakers and what's with her shirt? You really have to see it to believe it. She can't really sing, either. The kids look so gray and drab! They could have done a much better job with this production, as it was such an important milestone in the partnership of ALW and TR.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent movie
I love this movie. It's not quite a stage version, but not a movie version. It's a little of both.Donny Osmond is a great Joseph and Maria Friedman is a great Narrator. The rest of the cast is the best they can be.Everyone sings well, dances well, and acts really well. It's cute, funny, sad, and heartbreaking. If you like Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice this one is for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting to note...
It's symptomatic of middle-age, I suppose, to reflect warmly on "the good old days", and even though I never wanted to fall into that syndrome, seeing "Help" has done exactly that for me. I was a Freshman in college when the movie was released, and so it was a movie for the millions of Boomers like me, in that bizarre, wonderful time that was the mid-1960's in America.
5-0 out of 5 stars YAY!! :D
This was the best movie that the beatles did it was funny and had a bit more of a plot this time. 'in the weeks that followed five more attemts were made to steal the ring.' Quite frankly my favorite attemt was number four he,he. But in 'another girl' we can only wish that Paul would wear that tshirt more often. and my stepsister finally realized that there are more rasons to like the beatles than their music. That is before John turned into mountain man\amish terrorist anyway.
4-0 out of 5 stars Please restore "Help!" for DVD
Though not the landmark that "A Hard Day's Night" was, this film is still a lot of fun, and for current and future generations shows how the Beatles looked and behaved in 1965, in full color (in fact, the color cinematography is striking throughout--should have been nominated for an Oscar).

During its release, this was the most popular film of all time in its native Italy. A typical Roberto Benigni comedy of mistaken identity, this 1991 work stars the actor-director in two roles, one a tough mafioso named Toothpick and the other a meek bus driver who is the gangster's look-alike. When the bad guy's girlfriend comes on to the clueless innocent--and she brings him along to her Sicilian villa--the slapstick madness rolls into high gear. Benigni really is a very funny and often remarkable clown, and he employs his usual physical gags in great and gratifying abundance. His script's inspiration reaches several peak moments when the mysteries between light and dark doppelgangers are suggested. One could reasonably call this sort of Jekyll-and-Hyde tale the closest Benigni has yet come to making his version of Jerry Lewis's Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Of course it's a distortion
It's the heart-breaking narrative of Reich's persecution interwoven with moments that highlight the absurdity of sex that make this work so powerful. I saw it first in 1980 in the UK and that screening still reverberates.
1-0 out of 5 stars A Total Distortion of Reich's Work
This video was undertaken by Dusan Makavajev, who according to a 1971 film review article in the Journal of Orgonomy, obtained original footage of Reich from the Reich Museum, and interviews with various individuals who knew Reich and who had followed up on his research, by posturing as a "friend of Reich".He then proceeded to mix that original footage with pornographic images designed to plunge a knife into the heart of everything Reich argued about, and stood for.Only a few of Reich's genuine friends had the forethought to grant permissions based upon their approval of the final film - and they promptly refused such permission. It caused an uproar among those who knew and understood Reich, but Makavajev got his footage and danced away a laughing man. This film has done more damage to Reich's name and legacy than any single item one might point to, by distorting Reich's excellent and important biophysical work on the "Function of the Orgasm" (see book of this title) into a malignant advocacy of "free sex for all".Reich would puke forever if he saw how his life's work was so badly twisted."F--- Freely" announces one of the heroes of this film, in a plot about an ice-skater who seduces, but then murders and decapitates one of the "revolutionary proletariat" female characters.A weak "plot" indeed, interspliced with porno images from the plaster-casters, the first male erection to appear on a US film, masturbation images, and people group-fornicating to cartoon music -- Makavajev's apparent idea of the "sexual revolution" -- all under a smiling wall portrait of Reich."Freedom Peddling" is what comes to mind, and I can say with confidence that there is nothing of accuracy or authenticity about Reich in this film, aside from the interviews and short seconds of film from Reich's original archives, which were obtained by fraudulent means.Reich's work informs us, that the pornographic character is a sexually-frustrated character, no less than the sex-negative moralist of the organized church, and that they are in fact mirror images of each other, flip sides of the same coin. "Brothels are built from bricks of religion" as the poet William Blake once said -- and Reich's clinical work put substance to this idea. And so when this film was shown at my university years ago, the theatre was flooded with all the frustrated fraternity boys, come to hoot and ogle at the images of naked people. They learned nothing.Neither will anyone viewing this film, except perhaps how deceptive some Hollywood-types can be, even if they come from Yugoslavia.

4-0 out of 5 stars Organism or orgasm?
I saw "WR: Mystery of the Organism " in my youth, say age 20, at a film festival one evening almost 30 years ago.I do remember it having a strange effect on me and having stirred my original interest, delving into the work of (WR), Dr. Wilhelm Reich, the alleged mad scientist who died in prison for what he believed in.Read more

John Waters's goofy, 1990 comedy about a Baltimore girl (Amy Locane) who can't decide if she should remain "good" in her 1954 world or hang out with the motorcycle boys is funny in a scene-by-scene way, but doesn't quite gel into the grand piece the director was hoping for. The cast is exceptionally likable, however, including Johnny Depp as an Elvis type and Iggy Pop as a chattering loony. The best material is set in a fringe world of bikers and losers on the outskirts of town, and Waters writes some hilarious sardonic dialogue for the characters. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Movie Set In the 50s Since Grease!
"Cry Baby" is the coolest movie since Grease that deals with this time period. The songs are good and the actors in the film are really excellent. I'm a fan of Johnny Depp, and he came through in this movie and him in a lead role set in the 50s worked! This movie is not only a movie that takes place in the 50s, but it feels like a movie that was made in that decade as well. Everything that was big in the movies during that time are seen and used in here. I really enjoyed how this film also dealt with issues people had then and the way people acted and thought.
4-0 out of 5 stars Campy...cute
Sort of like Grease/Outsiders gone crazy.Good movie and performances.I had no idea Johnny Depp could sing.I enjoyed the "jail house rock" spoof, and the music is great. Not a GREAT movie though, couldn't touch Grease or American Graffiti. But it IS worth watching.

4-0 out of 5 stars Waters Gets Wet With Cry Baby
John Waters who likes to be called the "Pope of Trash" has done a lot of films that are outrageous in style such as "Cecil B. Demented," "Pecker," & "Hairspray." "Cry Baby" is a 1990 musical that is utterly silly and frothy, but works nevertheless. Johnny Depp, now a big box office draw and critical success with Oscar nominations for "Finding Neverland" & "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl," can be proud of the rockabilly Elvis-type singer he plays named Wade "Cry Baby" Walker. Depp performs his "Jailhouse Rock" type number with great energy and rebellion. Having him run through sewage pipes in his underwear is enough to set many a teenage girl's hearts aflutter. The female lead is Allison played by Amy Locane who worked in other films like "Airhead," "The Mummy" & "Bongwater." She does a good Olivia Newton John-like "Grease" character of the square girl who has a crush on Depp's bad boy. Stephen E. Miller who was recently seen in "RV" with Robin Williams and previously in "The Accused" with Jody Foster does a good job as the square boyfriend Baldwin who loses his girl to Cry Baby.

Complex to the point of being pleasingly convoluted, this Sydney Pollack film (from a terrific script by Robert Towne and Leonard and Paul Schrader) is an intriguing blend of Western and Asian sensibilities. Mitchum, in one of his best roles of the 1970s, is drawn to the Orient by an army buddy (Brian Keith), whose daughter has been kidnapped. But when he gets to Japan, Mitchum finds that her kidnappers are the shadowy Yakuza, the Japanese Mafia--an organization that is as vicious as it is tradition-bound. He must call on friends he made after World War II for favors and finds himself unintentionally trampling on issues of honor, even as he battles for his life and that of the girl he is seeking. Surprisingly heartfelt and deliciously exciting, the film features a sorrowful performance by Mitchum and a stoically touching one by Ken Takakura. And what great samurai swordplay! Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I am obligated to buy this on DVD and on VHS!
I have seen this movie numerous times and NEVER tire of watching it. As someone involved in Japanese Budo and having been to Japan several times, I get lost in the movie each time. Watching Takakura Ken perform the first Iaido kata-Ippon Mae: Mai is excellent.

When we were living in New York City, and I was twelve, my Dad told my Mom that he was taking me somewhere for a few hours. To my delight, we ended up at a ratty movie theater on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. These were the days before the monster multi-plexes.I can't remember the exact address, but it was a large one room gig that had seen it's better days. From what I could tell, some cool guy had come up with the idea of programming this low-rent theater with old Samurai flicks usually starting with the name Yojimbo...Yojimbo meets the One-Armed Warrior...you get the idea.
4-0 out of 5 stars GRANDDADDY OF FILMS SET IN JAPAN, BUT SHOWING ITS AGE..
For a movie made in the 70s, this Pollack production deserves a hats-off for being so way ahead of its time. From a Kendo class with very accurate "kata" to Ginza's neon lights, the film gets it astonishingly spot on, which is remarkable given the preoccupation of the rest of the world with the meteoric rise of that whole Japan chimera at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saami adventure
This movie is on my Top Ten list. The movie is based on a Saami legend. I know it is hard to find this movie on DVD in the English speaking countries and I wonder why Nils Gaup, the Director, hasn't made up his mind to get it distributed with English subtitles. The updated version of this movie, Ofelas, has been out in Norway on DVD for a couple of years now, but there are only Norwegian subtitles, sorry to say. But it's possible to watch the movie and understand the story without the subtitles. It's very visual and easy to understand. Order it from [...].

This is a WONDERFUL film! Many people are hesitant to watch foreign movies because they think that there is something elitist about them.DO NOT buy into this type of snobbery. These are really enjoyable movies in which the characters just happen to be speaking a different language. Many also think that foreign movies are only for adults.Pathfinder is a great opportunity to introduce your teenagers to really good movies instead of the lousy teen movies in American theaters and video stores now. This one is more exciting than just about anything that has come out of America in many years. This one REALLY deserves a widescreen DVD release. But until then, do yourself a favor and get this movie.

The first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 at the Olympics was Nadia Comaneci. From a small town in Romania, Nadia (Leslie Weiner, in her only feature film role) rose to international stardom. Under the coaching guidance of Bela Karoli, she pushed herself with the will of a champion. This movie does a wonderful job of showing how hard gymnasts must work as well as showing how much they must give up in their personal lives in order to achieve success. After winning three gold medals at the 1976 Olympics, her life spins out of control when Bela is removed as her coach. For the first time in her life she is on her own, she is the object of jealousy from her teammates, and her weight is out of control. She seeks out her former coach and asks for his help. Together they put Nadia back on the winning track. A family film with a lot to offer, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful intellectual and ethical exercise...
This is one of my favorite films from the '60's, and I saw a superb stage production of it as well, two years before the film version. Sir Thomas More, chancellor of England, is asked to choose between his King and his Catholic Church. He refuses to take a side, publicly, but everyone in the nation knows he opposes King Henry's decision to break with the Pope so that he can marry another wife. How More (Paul Schofield) tries to stay alive via a silence that shouts a rebuke makes for compelling drama. A young Robert Shaw does a flamboyant and wonderful job as King Henry, but then, the entire supporting cast, as is common in British productions, is great. Faith and greed, power and the loss of it, survival and sacrifice...all are elements of this fine film.
5-0 out of 5 stars A courageous and moral man - Thomas More
A 1966 period movie with a true story about a man who stands up against powerful King Henry VIII and many others for his moral beliefs in regard to divorce. The king wanted a male heir and wanted to divorce his wife and take another one to achieve that.He was trying to get the church's permission to get out of this marriage with their approval. The stand Thomas More takes complicates his life in many ways, including his family and friends.More is an influential man of some means who was high in the leadership of England at that time.
5-0 out of 5 stars Would St. Thomas More really be any more popular today?
The technical excellence of this film on every level has already been sufficiently and deservedly documented many times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why not release this in DVD???
I have seen the DVD release for region 4 dvd players... why in the world didnt they release it for all regions? That was very stupid marketing.Fortunately I got very lucky and bought a VHS original that I found in the sale bin from a Rental video store as a prev rental. This movie is powerful and everytime I watch it gets an emotional response from me.The cast is wonderful and the horse... very well trained and just a magnificent animal! If you have an opportunity to see this I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phar Lap ~ An Olympian Tragedy
Throw together the modern real life drama's of Smarty Jones and Barbaro, then add Seabiscuit to the mix along with a measure of life-threatening intrigue, and you have something close to the tale of the magnificent Phar Lap, a real-life equine Olympian.
4-0 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Racehorse - Is DVD Coming Soon?
A good horse racing story - especially if it's based on real life - usually gets my attention and this is no exception. Phar Lap was a famous Australian race horse. This was another Seabiscuit-type horse who overcame big odds to achieve greatness. He just never got much press outside of Australia, I guess.

Made in 1964, but set in 12th-century England, this is the fact-based story of Henry II (Peter O'Toole) and his dear friend, the Archbishop of Canterbury (Richard Burton). When the king appoints his former drinking buddy to the high religious office, he believes he has placed an ally into power. Instead, he learns that Thomas very much takes his job to heart, prompting Henry to ask that fateful question--"Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Becket cries out for DVD release
I just don't understand why this gem of a movie hasn't yet been released on DVD. I am a teacher of English Literature in a college in Bangalore, India, and when I talk to my students about the European Middle Ages, I strongly recommend this film. I tell them that they cannot get a better introduction to the great issues of that era than what this superb film gives them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting...waiting...waiting...for the DVD
I watched my VHS widescreen version of "Becket" last night and was as impressed as ever with the solid excellence of every aspect of the performance except for the obvious one that it is only available on VHS -- not DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars my God...
this movie seriously needs to be on DVD. i don't understand why it's not! the acting- superb. historical facts and settings presented in a very entertaining fashion. humor. deep love-hate psychology that takes masters to manifest perfectly. these people transcended their acting to another level. i could watch it over and over! Becket is one of the best films ever. Release it on DVD!! ... Read more

Editorial Review

One of the most ferociously iconoclastic and experimental films of the French New Wave, Alain Resnais's 1961 feature, winner of the grand prize at that year's Venice Film Festival, is based on a script by Alain Robbe-Grillet. At its center is what seems to be a simple but unanswerable puzzle: Did its protagonist (Giorgio Albertazzi) have an affair the year before with a woman (Delphine Seyrig) he just met (or possibly re-met) at his hotel? The inquiry becomes an unsettling experiment in flattening the dimensions of past, present, and future so that any difference between them becomes meaningless, while Resnais's coldly formal but oddly dreamlike geometric compositions make space itself seem a function of subjective memory. Add to that Resnais's trademark tracking shots--long, smooth, a visual correlative of a wordless feeling--and this is a film that truly gets under the skin in almost inexplicable ways. One of the most influential works of its time. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Look, the Emperor is naked!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unutterable elegance
Whatever this is about, once you've seen it, you'll know you've seen something. What I mean is, whatever else you've ever seen, this is something else. Setting aside the helpful and fascinating extra features that came with my disc, by someone called Ginette Vincendeau, and suspending any attempt at prosaic understanding while watching, soak up the incomparable sensation of atmosphere, the sonorous sounds, the stunning sights, the sublimely stylish manner in which the images unroll. It almost makes the effort of interpretation unnecessary. But then, watch it again, and listen to all the explanations offered on all sides: hardly anyone can help coming up with their own ideas. And they are almost all different, since every viewpoint will alter the perspective of any object. There's the viewer who tells us it's actually the story of Orpheus and Eurydice. That long, tall, thin fellow is Death, who could lose, but always wins. This place is Limbo: the Underworld, where memory is erased, and time and place have no meaning, make no sense.Couldbe. Why does Death say he could lose? Answer: Amor Vincit Omnia. There are slight hints of Cinderella and her slipper; or the awakening of the Sleeping Beauty. The Life Force defeating Death and escaping from his dreary clasp. This is partly what Ginette puts forward. But she admits, I think, that this is too mechanical a reading; like the marionette-like dance, and the empty pleasantries of the half-heard conversations. This is a game, within a play, within a film, within a theatre, or on an unanticipated dvd. These people exist at one of civilization's high points, the eighteenth century enlightenment, baroque at the point of rococo, where order is everything, yet giving way to distortion. Or else they are an image of everyday life, its forms and conventions: this is a dateless reality of actually unrealized desires. Watch it a third time, and it becomes erotic. It is the product of a totally European sensibility, a specifically Franco-Germanic sensibility: America is far too adolescent a society ever to have created anything to equal it, in spite of Ginette's instancing Hitchcock, and Kubrick's "The Shining" --- which is lamentably feeble in its supposed emulation. It is easy to recognize genius: you know that however hard you might try, you would never come up with anything to match it.

3-0 out of 5 stars sunk in time after 46 years
Surely the film was very brave experiment by Resnais (the director) in 1961 (French "new wave"), introducing to cinematography what Joyce and Proust pioneered in literature at beginning of 20th century. Thus, the film is a great contribution to what we call the FORM rather than the content. That's why I rated it with 3 stars, not just one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Genius of Chris Eyre
Can I get the version with the bonus deleted scenes in which the two boys send a little e-mail to Suzy Song, apologizing for abusing her hospitality and sneaking out at the dead of night?I really miss those scenes and I feel that in the butchered version of the movie, Victor never really does learn anything. He inherits from his father the great fauly of running away (cowardice) which ruined his life up until Suzy's phone call.We see her towards the last half of the movie utterly changed by the ingratitude of the boys.
5-0 out of 5 stars Hillarious and Heartwarming
Smoke Signals is both delightful and educational.I grew to love the characters, especially Thomas Builds the Fire and Victor Joseph. Thomas, orphaned by a tragic fire, is raised by his grandmother to carry on the oral tradition of the tribe as a storyteller and he understands the value of elaborate embellishment in making history. Victor, abandoned by his father, Arnold Joseph, at the age of 12 becomes a bully but that is not the end of the story. It is the story of surviving a dying culture where everything is magical with the help of humor, imagination, and forgiveness. But the culture lives on in stories such as this. Everyone can benifit from their examples. After all, if we forgive others, who is left to blame for our unhappiness?
