5-0 out of 5 stars A Sober Mel Gibson delivers an excellent performance
Very good acting and a fantastic script put this movie at the top of the list of must see movies of this decade.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hotch Potch
Not since "Sixth Sense", with the most obvious and telegraphed twist, have I seen a bigger load of hooey. This guys inability to tell a story without glaringly obvious chasms in the plot is only equalled by his obviously tenuous grasp of Christian theology and doctrine.. a bit like an O'level pupil writing a thesis on nuclear fission. The mere concept of this plot, using an alien invasion as proof of Gods existence, flys in the face of the most fundamental of christian tenets.. Crikey, and all this from an agnostic..

5-0 out of 5 stars Signs is One of Our Favorite Films
Not only does the movie Signs offer a wonderfully different kind of alien/ufo tale, but its characters are very likable and the story is about much more than aliens from another planet. The story's true question is this: does everything just happen by chance, or is God caring for His children in ways they simply cannot understand? Signs is the story of hope lost, faith put aside because of intense pain and grief, and how one man's relationship with God affects the lives of those around him. We were amazed by how truly moving this film is, as well as how humorous it can be, and we were impressed with the acting of all the cast. Does everything just happen by chance, or is God caring for His children in ways they simply cannot understand? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Believable premise
Having heard the real Travis talk about his abduction I was anxious to see the video interpretation of the experience. Expecting a low-budget "B" movie, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the movie took the premise seriously, focusing on the reactions of Travis' friends instead of lingering on outrageous special effects. I highly reccommend this film.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fire in the Sky
My cousin recommended this movie. She being a little more squeemish than I. It was a good story, like a bad dream someone might have but not too scary. Too many unanswered situations.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Alien Abduction Case and Human Drama
"Fire in the Sky" opens with a quotation from the Greek dramatist Aeschylus: "Thus does chance make a plaything of a man's life"-pretty highbrow stuff for a sci fi flick about an alien abduction. In fact, the opening quotation of this excellent and underrated screenplay by Tracy Torme is aptly chosen and deftly introduces the deeper, metaphysicalunderlying themes of the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is How a Great Remake is Made
In the original INVASION (1956), the alien pods descend on a small California town and overtake it.Everyone knows everyone. The slightest change in anyone's personality is noticable so the humans are tipped off a little early.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic sci-fi and one of my favorite films
This movie is outstanding. I love everything about it, from the script, direction and creepy atmosphere to the acting, casting and effects. I haven't seen a Philip Kaufman movie yet that has disappointed me, though this is my favorite one of his. Most people are familiar with the basic plot: Invaders from another planet create duplicates of existing people, apparently with the intent of taking over the entire planet. The concept is so frightening for several reasons: absolutely everyone is vulnerable and there is nothing that can be done to exempt oneself; it is unknown to the viewers who is a pod creature because the aliens do not have bodies of their own, rather are identical to an existing person; the existing person dies once the alien doppelganger is `born,' and the ending leaves open the distinct impression the entire planet will eventually be overtaken. This concept takes on new meaning in the digital age because so many among us have been victims of identity theft, so this seems to hit that much closer to home. We can also see the parallels between this concept and that of a conspiracy theory, where so many people are involved we consider ourselves powerless to stop it. When done well, as the 1978 film is, we are left with a feeling of dread and hopelessness. The 1956 original is decent, though the effects and acting are dated. The 1993 update is rather poorly made and unconvincing, even though it is worth seeing for the lovely Gabrielle Anwar. It is now too early to tell how good the 2007 version with Nicole Kidman will be, so see the 1978 version if you have not done so already!

2-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Terrible DVD
This is one of the great remakes -- a remake that actually doesn't just rehash the original. It takes the same premise in a different direction. And it has a 70s apocalyptic character -- edgy and just a little depressing. The original and this remake really reflect their times.

Editorial Review

Something's wrong in the town of Santa Mira, California. At first, Dr.Miles Bennell (Kevin McCarthy) is unconcerned when the townsfolk accuse their loved ones of acting like emotionless imposters. But soon the evidence is overwhelming--Santa Mira has been invaded by alien "pods" that are capable of replicating humans and taking possession of their identities. It's up to McCarthy to spread the word of warning, battling the alien invasion at the risk of his own life. Considered one of the best science fiction films of the 1950s and '60s, this classic paranoid thriller was widely interpreted as a criticism of the McCarthy era (that's Senator Joseph, not actor Kevin), which was characterized by anticommunist witch-hunts and fear of the dreaded blacklist. Some hailed it as an attack on the oppressive power of government as Big Brother. However viewers interpret it, this original 1956 version of Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Paranoia From A Pod
For those people out there who have not seen this film (or read the excellent book it was based on) a classic sci-fi treat lies in wait to take over your lives and endow you all with a driving need to conform and obey.Or maybe just replace you with a carbon copy replica.
5-0 out of 5 stars Body Snatchers!
First let me say Contrary to popular belief this movie WAS NOT shot in a widescreen format, it was CROPPED into a widescreen format by the studio before release, having said that this movie remains a fine piece of 1950s si-fi highly enjoyable great pic on the DVD as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Invasion From Within
Released in '56, 'Invasion of the Body Snatchers' is an intelligent and insightful sci-fi/horror film dealing with the topic of an alien invasion from another planet perpetrated in a most unexpected and highly original way.

5-0 out of 5 stars "15 Frightful Horror Films ... Bela Lugosi ... Passport Video"

1-0 out of 5 stars Can your heart stand the shocking facts about grave robbers from outer space?
This is the soundtrack to "The Worst Film of All Time".The CD features the audio track to the entire movie on one disc.Music, dialogue, sound effects, etc.Yes, the sound to the whole darn movie. And it's all on one 70 minute track, which is very annoying. You can't skip ahead to various scenes if you want to.Aside from that, why would you want to just listen to the movie on your CD player, when you could watch it on your TV?It loses a great deal of it's effect without the visual aspect.

3-0 out of 5 stars This was in the theaters?
I picked up "Plan 9" purely for its reputed schlock value. Any movie described on its own cover as one of the 50 worst films of all time has to be worth a look!

5 stars all the way. It's silly, way too silly to be taken seriously, but that's ok.No one is looking to change the world here.
5-0 out of 5 stars GreatScifi/Action Movie
This movie kinds of reminds me of "The War of the Worlds" series as far as Evil aliens come to wipe out the human race. The way they're defeated sounds the same too with one obvious difference. I don't want to give a way anything but compare the two and you'll see what I'm talking about.

5-0 out of 5 stars How can anyone ahte this film?
This is the ultimate "Us VS Them" epic. How can you hate it? It has great special effects, great music, plenty of humor, and characters who are more sympathetic than most. It's meant to be FUN people. And it's a hell of a lot more fun than those crappy Star Wars prequels.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ray Harryhausen's classic Sci-Fi Creature Creation
"Twenty Million Miles to Earth" is a superb example of 1950's sci-fi story telling and special effects at their very best. The film has so many different things to offer a sci-fi buff like myself, top notch work by genius Ray Harryhausen, wonderful on-location photography in the beautiful Eternal City Rome, and one of the best monster creations of the entire 1950's decade in the famed "Ymir" from Venus. Indeed "monster" is not really an appropiate title in this case for this visitor from beyond the stars is a creature very much in the "King Kong" mode of being a sympathetic victim of man's lack of care and understanding in bringing him out of his own environment into a strange new world he does not understand.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Winner of the War of the War of the Worlds
Now that three more War of the Worlds movies (that I know of) have been released within the past few years, one with a really big budget and set in New York (you've probably seen that one) and two low budget movies set back in Britain in the 1890's, this is still the best War of the Worlds movie out there.
5-0 out of 5 stars Old-Fashioned Sci-Fi Movie At Its Best
I sound like an old man when I say that there are movies back in the day that are better than the slickest modern production, even when the movies outdate ME.Maybe because today's filmmakers are so much in love with CGI effects that they feel they can replace little, unimportant things like plot, storyline and character development. That's why I've steadfastly refused to see Spielberg's version of this classic; I don't want anything to tarnish my memory of what I consider, as a kid growing up and today, one of the best sci-fi films ever made.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seminal British sci-fi thriller
Wolf Rilla's 1960 production of "Village of the Damned" was a cinematic jewel from a bygone era.A combination of a well conceived plot, a professional cast and creative direction was sufficient to evoke fear and terror without the use of special effects and buckets of stage blood.
5-0 out of 5 stars Village of the Damned~ Wolf Rilla
I was lying and watching tcm one evening and this movie came on. I was skeptical since many horror movies have bad plots, no character development and terrible acting ability. This movie on the other hand had adequate ability in all three categories. This is a very messed up movie regarding the telecenetic powers of a group of blonde/blue eyed children living in England. Thier behavior is unsettling and how they act towards other is truly barbaric. It shows that there is more to being human then just intelect and that being human means showing empathy, compasion and love, something all these children lack judging from their actions. I like the fact that there is not much blood and the sparse special effects make it even more "realistic" and not silly or just plain stupid.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb SF classic

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sci-Fi movie ever
This is a classic Sci-Fi space movie with a great sound track. The odd "scary" sounds were made with a Theramin, a special instrument made by the father of electronic music, Bob Moog. Bob designed the Mini Moog and other classic synthesizers. (He died recently but his legacy lives on)

5-0 out of 5 stars I DON'T THINK WIDESCREEN WOULD HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE
Movies didn't become widescreen until 1953. This was released in 1951. The picture quality is clear and sharp. And the sound is very good. I too would have liked it better if this were a single sided disc. As for the reviews that considered Klaatu to be an outer space bully sent to preserve the "MASTER RACE", You missed the point completely. He didn't say, if we don't behave ourselves he will destroy us. That is something Gort is programmed to do. He is warning us of that. He said, if we extend our violence, extend meaning; outward into space. The earth would be reduced to a burned-out cinder. He was looking out for the well-being for all lifeforms in the universe. And sometimes it takes tough love to set us straight.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wicked What ?
I am a huge fan of Ninja Scroll and Fist and I have been waiting a good minute to see this movie. The Animation is GREAT but there is NOT enough action and way too much POINTLESS nudity, and I totally LOVE nudity. Ninja Scroll's nudity was always followed up by scenes of intense-fast action and much gore. This nudity is just there, there is no follow up. There are a few mediocre action scenes but that's about it. It's still cool to watch but I'm still dissappointed that I bought it. The animation is awesome to watch I just wish it was faster with more action. That's all folks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Kawajiri is the man!!
Yoshiaki Kawajiri is one of the best Japanese animators of all time, and this is his best work.People say this pales in comparison to Ninja Scroll, I don't think so, I think this is better (NS is still awesome though).Don't listen to the one-star reviewers, they're probably some fat gothic vampire chicks who call themselves "otakus," masturbate to InuYasha, listen to nu-metal, and think any anime that wasn't released after 1999 is "stupid" or "retarted."

3-0 out of 5 stars Target Earth - Not a Classic, but deserves a chance.
While Target Earth may not be a well known, classic Sci-Fi movie, it certainly gives a decent swing at the genre.Being Herman Cohen's first solo-produced film, Target Earth most definately IS science fiction. The plot of the film is one of the most frightening and classic ideas in the anals of science fiction - that of the Earth being invaded by beings from another world. The threat in Target Earth, however, is an encroaching vanguard of robots which precede the actual alien invasion.A novel idea indeed. The acting in TE is good, with Richard Denning (Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Day the World Ended, The Black Scorpion) cast as the hero.

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic sci-fi/horror gem.
This movie is a probably John Carpenter's best movie to date,It's certainly his best in my opinion and also one of my favourite movies per se. It has great acting, great special effects (especially for the time it was made)and revolves around a classic sci-fi/horror b movie plot thats very suspenseful. The DVD features a great transfer of the movie and also contains some very informative extras which give you somevery interesting insights into the making of and history of the movie. Highly recommended.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Science FictionHorror Classic!
What I really liked about this film, apart from everthing, was that it was released around the same time as E.T., and the two film's couldn't be any further apart as these two were. In E.T., you have the cute benevolent alien trying to get back home. In "The Thing," you've got a malevolent alien who wants to stay, and is hell-bent on creatiing as much destruction as it possibly can. With a strong cast, led by Kurt Russell, Wilford Brimley and Keith David to name just a few actors, the film succeeds because the faces are for the most part unfamiliar. And ALL of the actors were incredible in the film.
4-0 out of 5 stars Scary, Funny Sci-Fi/Thriller
John Carpenter's films can be really good (Big Trouble in Little China) or really bad (Memoirs of an Invisible Man). The Thing falls in the "good" area. The film centers on an Alien virus/parasite that infiltrates an Antartic science/mining expedition. The Alien virus/parasite can take the form of any human, so the isolated men must try to figure out who's human and who's Alien.

4-0 out of 5 stars The hour is near and The Man from Planet X will be waiting
The story is mostly narrated by a newspaperman John Lawrence (Robert Clarke) that also takes part in an adventure that we now hear only as a rumor. It takes place in 1951 on an isolated Scottish island near the end of the world (in more ways than one). A planet (Planet X) is approaching ours and they seam to have sent a vanguard for what purpose we do not know.
