5-0 out of 5 stars excellent introduction, but only as a starting point
This is a superb film, combining the emotion evoked from images and selected narratives (wonderfully read by great actors) as well as some analysis by prominent scholars or writers. So far as it goes, Burns has exploited the attributes of the film medium to what I believe is the maximum extent: you leave this experience with a good idea of what went on and how it changed the country. It is moving, horrible, and beautiful all at once.
5-0 out of 5 stars Shelby Foote and Ken Burns Resurrect the Dead
I have seen the critical remarks regarding this film.True, not all material could be included...unless filmakers wanted to exceed the 11 hours that this documentary already comprises. This is a stirring masterwork which features master historians with the powers of captivating story -- Shelby Foote, Ed Bearss, and others.Giving renewed life and voice to those who have passed on, the drama of this timescape is carefully unfolded. It is filled with struggle, humanity, and grace. If I could afford the collector's box set, I'd own it...but it's a tad expensive. If you can afford it, buy it -- it will be a set that you often revisit. If you can *really* afford it, buy me a copy.:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Remebering the Four Little Girls
As I viewed the 4 Little Girls documentary,I was reminded of a time when I went to the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church to see where this horrible tragedy took place. A myriad of thoughts came through my mind-- anger, confusion, sadness. The video brought this sadness back.I also felt sad for the white men responsible for killing the four girls.Sometimes I wonder if they understood that on the day they murdered the four precious girls, they took a piece of heaven out of the consiousness of the sky, and indeed, lost a piece of their own humanity.4 Little Girls taught me that--to hate causes one to lose his or her own ability to experience the gift of humanity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Not to be missed
This powerful documentary is a wonderful tribute to the four young girls whose lives were cut short in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama on 15 September 1963.First and foremost, it focuses on their lives, those who knew them, and the events going on in Birmingham while they were growing up.It doesn't put the entire or primary focus on how they tragically were murdered, although naturally the bombing, the funerals, and the (rather belated) trials of the sick excuses for life who carried out the bombing are covered. It's a celebration of life, not death.(There are some brief graphic shots of the post-mortem photos, but as disturbing as these images might be, they carry home the impact of what really happened.)It really is amazing that their friends, neighbors, and family members were able to retain such dignity and composure even when talking about such sad events and calling to mind people who had such short lives and who died in such an unnatural way. While they'll be mourning for the rest of their lives, they haven't let the racist murderers destroy their lives. They've bravely carried on as best they can.
5-0 out of 5 stars Very moving; Powerful
This is one of the saddest, most gripping documentaries i have ever seen.Four little girls is about the death of four young black girls who died in a KKK church bombing in birmingham, alabama and about racism & segregation.Though not a thriller, it will keep you on the edge of your seat for its entirety.Sympathy, empathy, tears, anger...you name it, and you'll feel it while viewing this film.

Atlanta's Morehouse College has long been revered as a leading academic institution, and as an all-male, historically African American institution, it has been viewed as a shaper of American black leaders, including perhaps its most notable graduate, Martin Luther King Jr.In this video, Morehouse is viewed through the eyes of its students during the 1993-94 academic year, and their year at Morehouse is seen to be an experience in character and spiritual development as much as an exercise in academic endeavor.Footage shot during a fall "spirit night," a late-night ritual to promote bonding among the student body, sets the tone for the video, which features interviews with Morehouse professors as well as notable grads filmmaker Spike Lee and Olympic gold medallist Edwin Moses.Profiles of specific students show their development through the course of the school year, and the mystique of being a "Morehouse Man," as opposed to merely a Morehouse graduate, is explored in this intelligent examination of the character of this incredible educational institution. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Morehouse Men
Back in 1995, as an avid watcher of PBS, I taped this program, along with The Gandy Dancers, which was about those brethern who worked the rail lines way back in the day. Who would have thought over 10 years later, I would be a student at Dear Old Morehouse?
4-0 out of 5 stars Great insight into a great institution.
As a current student at Morehouse College, I can tell you that this video is a much needed resourse into the everyday workings of Morehouse College. As you may know Morehouse is the only all male, Black, four year institution in the world. You have heard stories for years about Morehouse and her sons-- get this video and understand it for yourself. ... I was disappointed that you rarely heard from Malcom X. I was disappointed that I heard more from James Cone. I appreciate his thoughts, but I could read his book for his thoughts. I thought the video should have captured more comments from various people such as Ossie Davis who did his eulogy. I did enjoy the comments by Peter Goldman. It is an excellent video to be introduced to Malcolm X. If you are familiar with Malcolm X then I think you will be disappointed as I was. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Anyone who loves soul music or rhythm & blues probably knows that it all springs from the roots of gospel music. This 1982 documentary by director George T. Nierenberg breaks it all down beautifully as he examines the lives and careers of a handful of since-departed gospel stars, who helped create the genre from which so many other forms of music flowed. Focusing on the aging but still vigorous "Professor" Thomas A. Dorsey and "Mother" Willie Mae Ford, he also offers musical moments by such gospel stalwarts as Sallie Martin and the Barrett Sisters. Live performances are mixed with telling, sometimes touching reminiscences by these pioneers of a musical style, all leading to several striking points: principally, that this energetic music took time to be accepted by the conservatives in the church, and that the music itself has a surprising power to raise spirits and confirm faith. Yet it's all done in a way that is spiritual without being preachy. A truly joyful film. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Say Amen, Somebody
Regardless of anyone's race or creed, this movie provides rare nourishment for the soul. With its message of love and hope contagious, Director Nierenberg fashions a touchingly human and uplifting portrait of gospel music that translates how this special music has sustained people through adversity. A humbling and glorious film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gospel Music Lovers, Don't Miss This One!
If you're into Gospel Music (the older clasic type) and even if you're not, this is one of the most moving , informative, authentic documentaries I've ever see.Maybe that's why it won an academy award when it was released.I saw it then at the theatre, and later on video, and it's lost none of its power. It took a European to make it, which is just more proof how little we as Americans care about what many consider the most influencial form of African- American music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give me that Old time religion
For those who have not yet goten a grip of the new strange stuff in the gospel scene, this is for you.For those who have got all the latest music, this is for you too.It shows the background of songs such as "precious Lord".Also it goes on to show how the gospel music had to fight to be where it was int he early eigthies.Thomas Dorsey is also a little entertainer and Willie Mae Ford Smith is definitely a minister for the truth whatever the cost.Get it and you will not be disappointed ... 3-0 out of 5 stars For die-hard jazz fans
I appreciate the reviews in which it is suggested that viewers try to experience this film in a broader context--as a time capsule of an era. However, as an avid fan of Anita O'Day, I was deeply frustrated by the camera's focus on odd-looking (check out the chick eating the ice cream cone!), and apparently disinterested listeners in the audience, when the camera should have been focused on this amazing singer. Still, because O'Day--at the height of her sensuous form-- remains sadly undocumented on film, this is the best we've got.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jazz on a Summer's Day
My personal 50s sci-fi favorite, "Invasion" is an ingenious nightmare vision that reflects the paranoia of the time created by McCarthyism.Absent of the effects that characterize more recent entries in this genre, the film remains genuinely creepy strictly on the basis of story, direction and performances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marks the end of the reign of Jazz
Bert Stein captures the Newport Jazz festival of 1958 in vivid color and with clarity. While jazz is the primary focus of the film, Stein does meander to the America's Cup race that was being contested off Newport at the time, along with some diversionary local flavor, which gives us a sense of what it was like to actually be there. Continuing along this vein, during the festival itself, Stein spends much of his camera time observing the audience caught unaware reacting to jazz on a summer day; after all, live music does not exist in a vacuum. It's this footage along with the incredible jazz music that makes this documentary really special. As a viewer we get to react to the music, and react to the audience reacting to the music. That girl with the seductively cute smile in the yellow dress, and that gruff man hiding behind the shades with the nervous twitch are people that we can connect to from our own personal experiences at open air summer concerts. The feeling of community one gets as the music breaks down the barriers and the sun begins to set. Stein allows his moving compositions to develop and flesh out the character of his subjects, giving us a nostalgic feeling for a time gone by that may have occurred long before we were even born. It does not matter because we are there! But this particular slice of time has special significance, because jazz would soon be replaced in popularity by Rock & Roll. We watch it happen before our eyes as a young Chuck Berry takes the stage. Backed by some excellent jazz musicians, all looking "amused" but not taking very seriously the music that would knock them off the charts for good within a couple of years. As Berry's classic Rock & Roll riffs project across the audience, young people spontaneously jump to their feet and start moving to the rhythm while their parents watch, perplexed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Study on Black History
The best thing I like about this documentary is that it is a great study on black History. But it needed to deliver more on what it was supposed to be Jazz Music. I can't believe he left out the great jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery. Left out Roland Kirk and Keith Jarrett. very little on dave Brubeck. Should have talked about classic Jazz Albums like Kind of blue, Time out (with the song Take Five) A Love Supreme, My favourite things, bitches Brew etc. Also nothing on Milt Jackson and the great Modern Jazz Quartet. Ken burns must realize there's is more to jazz than just the big band swing era. But still a great study on black history which makes it worthwhile just for that alone. and nothing on jazz hip hop. songs like doo bop song(miles Davis) and Jazz thing (gang Starr)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Place to Learn about the Older Jazz
This series is fantastic. Many reviewers have criticized it as being dogmatic in its pandering to earlier styles of jazz while panning later ones. This criticism is valid to some degree.I think it provides a great service, howerver, despite its shortcomings.I loved jazz since I was a child, and started buying jazz records in the late 1970s at the age of about 19.Nobody in my family had a great appreciation of this music. At that time it was somewhat difficult to get a handle on the development of jazz through the swing period to the fusion period at that time. The older stuff was generally out of print, etc.Learing about bop was like an archeologist looking at shards of pottery. So a documentary like this is great in this instance; it advanced my knowledge of music before my time unbelievably. I would recommend this highly. It was also nice to watch the documentary with my elderly parents who grew up in the 30s and 40s.It was great to share this with them.I could not believe that they wanted to continue into the bop period watching the series (I always thought they hated my records like that). Finally, being from New Orleans, and surviving Katrina, it was great to see the New Orleans culture treated with such respect.
3-0 out of 5 stars Great for Jazz fans
I think this film is not as accesible as some of his other works. Whether you like Baseball or not you'll be drawn in, whether you like boxing or not you'll won't be able to stop watching Unforgivable Blackness, I don't think the same could be said for Jazz.It is well made and detailed on the areas it covers, but it might not grab someone that isn't into the topic. ... Once upon a time, a boy named Michael Jordan lived in Wilmington, North Carolina. Young Michael dreamt of becoming a professional basketball player. He began by participating in drop-in games with his brother, although at first he could not beat the older, heavier, more experienced sibling. As time went on, though, something grew inside of this child, a will and determination to beat anyone and anything that stood in the way of his success on the court. Playing basketball for his high school team, Jordan won a scholarship to the University of North Carolina. It was there that he first gave the world a glimpse of his greatness. Read more

Being the MJ fan that I am, I have seen quiet a lot of movies about Jordan, and really I must say that this is one of the best, it has all those moves that just make MJ the great player that he is, I mean the way he moves with the ball, its just amazing, and unlike some other movies, this one doesnt waste long time on people talking, but shows what MJ is all about BASKETBALL.

    Editorial Review

The key players in the radical movement known as the Weather Underground are skillfully brought to life in this Oscar-nominated documentary. The Weathermen were born of sixties protest, but took their scheme to overthrow the U.S. government to especially violent extremes. Never a well-populated movement, the Underground petered out as its leaders aged during the seventies; by decade's end, weary of hiding, most of them had turned themselves over to the authorities. That journey, by which a fire-breathing revolutionary such as Bernadine Dohrn became a (still fiery) gray-haired wife and mother, is an intriguing one. This film, rich in period footage (and some unnecessary sensationalism) captures the era somewhat broadly. But the present-day interviews with the participants, contrasted with their radical selves, provides an exceptionally detailed look inside the organization itself. It's not a nostalgic look back, and the overall mood is sobering rather than celebratory. Lili Taylor provides the narration. Read more

They were a radical organization that wanted to overthrow the United States government. The were an offshoot of the SDS (Students for an Democratic Society). Their name came from a Bob Dylan song "Subterranean Homesick" ("You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows"). They bombed a lot of places, mostly government buildings.

The Weather Underground and the radical left are shown in this documentary with most of their warts covered; but every now and again the blemishes pop into view.It makes an effort to show these graying radicals as somehow noble, idealistic characters; but in the end it exposes them as the childish, misguided, aimless fools that they were. Most of them have gone from being clueless kids to clueless adults; still waiting for a world revolution that is never coming. In the end the lesson, as stated in the film, is that radical movements cannot succeed because at some point the radicals always turn on each other. The only person in this movie I admired by the time it over was Mark Rudd who admitted having trouble coming to terms with his past actions and beliefs.Three of the nine members profiled in the film are now teaching college, giving me nightmares about what they might be indoctrinating their students into.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful artist; wonderful biography
"Half Past Autumn" serves as a video biography of a wonderful artist, Gordon Parks.Parks was a genius of all trades -- photography, music composition; writing, filmmaking."Half Past Autumn" gives an overview of his life, from his birth ("At his birth he died -- and was named Gordon after the young interning doctor who said -- let me try something -- and put him in freezing water and rubbed his body with a cloth -- bringing him back to life)Maybe his extraordinary birth had something to do with his extraordinary life. Gordon Parks did everything on his own terms; beginning with his days at Life Magazine as the first black photojournalist in the 1950s. Parks captured the humanity in all people in his photographs. This film is excellent overview of Gordon Parks' life.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TRIBUTE TO AN ARTIST
Gordon Parks has lived a long life. Half Past Autumn, the artistic retrospective of his life toured the country and received outstanding accolades. In this video of the same name, we as viewers get the opportunity to see the portfolio of this man's contributions as a photographer, composer, novelist and poet. Parks is a man for all times.5-0 out of 5 stars The images from the heart
Just to see the relationship for more than 20 years between this incredible photographer and human being and Flavio, a poor kid from the "Favelas" at Rio de Janeiro, is enough for me to buy this wonderful documentary.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Confederate high water mark at the Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg and the fall of Vicksburg mark the turning point of the Civil War in this fifth volume of Ken Burns' celebrated documentary. Those familiar with Michael Shaara's novel "The Killer Angels" or the film "Gettysburg" will find Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain featured prominently in this episode. There is also a section devoted to the Negro troops who fought for the Union during the war, contrasted with the Northern riots against Emancipation. The episode ends with the war moving from Tennessee to Georgia and, of course, Lincoln's address at Gettysburg.David McCullough's solid narration and Shelby Foote's unforgettable anecdotes continue to provide the defining voices of the documentary. The Civil War is brought alive through the use of hundreds of photographs and illustrations, textured sound effects, evocative music and the recognizable voices Jason Robards, Jr., Julie Harris and Sam Waterson. But the most memorable moments on this tape come from Daisy Turner, the 104-year-old daughter of a former slave reciting a poem about the death of a soldier. ... Editorial Review

Frederick Douglass, the self-taught orator, writer, and abolitionist who was born a slave in the South and made a brave escape to the North, was in the words of one historian: "A major figure in the coming of the Civil War, and the way the Civil War was fought. I think you can say he was the conscience of the nation." Douglass campaigned Lincoln to free the slaves and allow African Americans to serve in the nation's army. An early proponent of women's rights, he campaigned for equal rights for all people and he served as America's first African American statesman when he was appointed diplomat to Haiti. He continued his public-speaking engagements up to his death in 1895 at the age of 78. The comments and analyses of numerous historians and excerpts from the writings and speeches of Douglass present a man driven by a dream, and who worked to make that dream a reality to the end of his days. With no contemporaries alive to comment on the private man, and only brief autobiographical excerpts included from his own works, this portrait tends to simplify the controversies of his life (his second marriage to a white woman rocked even the "liberal" North) and deify the man, but few Americans deserve such tribute more than Frederick Douglass. 4-0 out of 5 stars Courage and Conscience
This accessible overview of Douglass' turbulent life from slavery and persecution to crusading newspaperman and presidential adviser should inform and inspire viewers. This biography recreates the prejudiced atmosphere where the myth of racial inferiority reigned in the South to justify slavery and in the North to rationalize indifference to human suffering. Douglass' fiery speeches still speak to our highest aspirations as Americans united by the creed that "all men (and women) are created equal."

5-0 out of 5 stars To be Real
This story being a part of history goes without challenge in my mind because, the reports as recorded cannot change what was the way of living then. This is the story of a challenged man , challenged not only by the society that he was a part of but also his own personal being. A must for history enthusiasts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wow
This DVD is great. It talks and tells alot of stuff I didnt know nor had any idea. Like exactly how Haiti became... Haiti, Our presidents... how the north and south were different and how they were the same at one point... USA fighting for independence and at the same time, Africans in America fighting for independence as well... and it talks about Native Americans as well. This is very very helpful for those who are actually interested in American history.

3-0 out of 5 stars The book was better.
I read the book based on this documentary and can honestly tell you there is no contest here, the book is far better. I could not help but notice as I watched this film how under developed it was, I mean if I had not read the book I would have been confused about the persons being mentioned in this film. The book made me feel for the slaves because of the details and extensiveness of the person's personality being mentioned. when the same character was mentioned in the film it did nothing or added anything to the film itself. I understand that it is impossible to put the whole content of a book into a documentary but a little more character development would have helped this piece a lot more.
4-0 out of 5 stars I love history and you should too!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for boxing fans
I gifted this to my dad, who is a boxing fan.He absolutely loved it. 6 hours of great boxing.I would recommend this to anyone who like boxing or ALI or both.

5-0 out of 5 stars Priceless
This three-disc documentary about the career of Muhammad Ali is amazing, worth more than 100 miscast biopics put together. It tells the whole story, from his youth to his gold medal to his ascension to the championship to his exile from the sport and right through to the end of his fighting days and his later-life bout with Parkinson's. It works for fans of Ali, obviously, but it also works if you want a general primer on boxing history or even an overview of the social, cultural, and political tumult of the 60's. Love him or hate him, the man is an icon, and this has all the footage and all the interviews with all the people who know and were there. An absolute must-have.

5-0 out of 5 stars The greatest documentary about Muhammad Ali of all time
When you pose with Muhammad Ali for photographs what he likes to do is have you make a fist and put it up against the side of the face while he assumes a boxing pose, so you look like you are landing a heavy blow against the only man ever to win the heavyweight boxing title three times. However, when it was my turn to pose there was no way on earth I was going to pretend I was beating up on the Champ, so I just wanted to shake hands. This gave Ali a chance to give me bunny ears.
