2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time Video
I did not like this movie.I enjoyed the Mack much better. The price on this video should of been cheaper.

3-0 out of 5 stars Classic
It was an interesting amount of Player Hatin' in that film. Some of it was good but it was more of a "Before Gordon Came To Sesame Street" kinda tale.

4-0 out of 5 stars Way better than the Mack
Everybody gives the Mack and Dolemite Props but personaly I think they suck. Willie actually has a real story. It doesn't over glamourize being a pimp...in fact itshows why you shouldn't. Worth checkin' out. Not as cartoonish as other people have said ... Read more

Editorial Review

On a bright sunny day in 1948, Jefferson (Mekhi Phifer) sets off down the road to go catch some fish; by the end of the movie's opening sequence, he is the one who's been caught, and wrongly accused of the murder of a white shopkeeper. Racial inequality, at the time, is so pervasive in Louisiana that the white defense lawyer's argument at Jefferson's trial is that his client is not worthy of conviction: "You might just as soon put a hog in the 'lectric chair as this," he declares.Outraged by this statement, Jefferson's godmother (Irma P. Hall) does not want her godson to die as a hog.To this end she enlists the reluctant aid of the black community's teacher, Grant Wiggins (Don Cheadle), to teach him to "be a man." As Grant and Jefferson get to know each other (and the viewer gets to know them both), it's not clear which of them needs the lesson more. As in Ernest J. Gaines's award-winning novel, the movie goes beyond the conflict between the races to explore divisions that splinter the black community: education versus religion, dark skin versus light. And, thanks to masterful performances from Cheadle and Phifer as well as a thoughtful screenplay by Amy Peacock, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A lesson for us all
A "Lesson Before Dying" is a powerful and passionate film, so beautifully written and so beautifully acted it is one of those rare exceptions where the film adaptation is better than the book.Mehki Phifer gives a powerful performance as Jefferson, a young man sentenced to die for a crime he did not commit. He truly brings honesty and humanity to a young man who is seen by white society as inhuman. And Don Cheadle brings compassionate and dignity to the teacher who must help Jefferson stand tall.
4-0 out of 5 stars There are more important lessons to be learned than death with dignity
In Louisiana in 1948 a young black man named Jefferson (Mekhi Phifer) makes the fatal mistake of accepting a ride from another pair of young men. When they stop at a local store to get some beer the other men do not have enough money and the white storeowner will not give them credit.Guns are drawn and everybody ends up dead but Jefferson, who is arrested for the crime.Since this is a question of black and white justice in the South before the Civil Rights Movement, Jefferson is condemned to be executed. The fact that he is innocent of the actual killings is not important to this 1999 HBO movie adapted from the novel by Ernest J. Gaines ("The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman").Nobody is going to save Jefferson from his fate. The focus here is not on justice, but rather on death with dignity.
1-0 out of 5 stars Hog of a story
During the first half of the 20'th century (and before) there were many injustices perpetrated against the negro. Those stories need to be told and understood. This movie tries to tell such a story but failed because it ignored the historical realities. I lived in a place much like the one in the movie in the 50's and was overwhelmed with the liberties the movie took with "the way it was."

The plotline may sound familiar: Two mismatched cops are assigned as reluctant partners to solve a crime. Culturally they are complete opposites, and they quickly realize they can't stand each other. One (Jackie Chan) believes in doing things by the book. He is a man with integrity and nerves of steel. The other (Chris Tucker) is an amiable rebel who can't stand authority figures. He's a man who has to do everything on his own, much to the displeasure of his superior officer, who in turn thinks this cop is a loose cannon but tolerates him because he gets the job done. 5-0 out of 5 stars A good, funny, action packed movie.
I love this movie.I didn't know how it would be at first.Mainly because of the huge difference in the two actors.Well after watching I realized that the two are perfect together. One plays a serious cop whos only goal is to solve the crime that has been committed. While the other is a cool, slick cop who likes women and having a good time.At first neither really gets along and they don't know how to act around each other. After a while of being together though this changes and they are both trying to solve the crime while having a bit of fun at the same time. This is one of the best movies I have seen in a long time so I would say try it out.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the funniest Jackie Chan Movies I know
This movie was the first DVD I ever bought! It is truly a gem.I like the Infinifilm bonus features.(It may not have been called Infinifilm at this time.)Brett Ratner is truly a comedic genius, and really gives the customer great quality DVD's.

Editorial Review

Produced as the title segment to a six-part series, this 90-minute documentary traces the evolution of jazz from its 19th-century origins in New Orleans's Congo Square, where slaves first introduced American listeners to the complex rhythms and earthy textures of African music. How that cultural diaspora combined with European and American folk, classical, and popular styles to become jazz, "America's classical music," is an oft-told tale, but it's handsomely served here by an intelligent script shaped by veteran jazz journalist Chris Albertson, and a well-chosen array of performances:Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie "the Lion" Smith, Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, Louis Armstrong, Jimmie Lunceford, Charles Mingus, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Thelonious Monk, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, and Gil Evans all appear, representing as complete a pantheon of major innovators and influences as could be hoped for.Period footage, including both stills and rare film clips, and interviews with musicians and scholars round out a portrait equally appropriate for hard-core jazz fans and novice listeners looking for a point of entry. 4-0 out of 5 stars The Story of Jazz
I teach a Music Appreciation course and this dvd was ideal for the introduction to jazz in this setting.I use more of the Ken Burns series in my American Popular Music course, but this dvd is an excellent overview. I ordered the dvd to have shown in class when I had to be away, and it was just right. If you are completely new to jazz, it's a good place to start. There is a good bit of attention given to bebop and basically ends there; I do wish that some had been given to jazz-rock and bossa nova. But in a dvd of this length, there is no way to cover everything. If you are fairly well versed in jazz already, you probably want something more comprehensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for survey-of-music courses
I use select bits of this video in both my Jazz History and Music Appreciation classes.Having real musicians talk about (and play!) the music really draws the students in, much more so than just talking about the players and seeing them in the book. The video is well-planned, well-directed and exceptionally well thought-out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Overview of Jazz
The best 90-minute look at jazz you can imagine. I used this in my music class and the kids were engaged all the way. Interviews are to the point and fun, clips are great. Hard to imagine a better succint treatment of the history of jazz. Highest recommendation! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Treatise on Black Gay Desire & Impressionistic Cinema
In mainstream gay cinema, the images of the black gay man is somewhat controversial and contrived.Often, he is portrayed as the overly effete stereotype. For the sake of the dollar and to appeal to cross-cultural fetishistic interest to reach a wider audience, he is often shown preferring and seeking out the attentions of white gay men.Writer-director Isaac Julien's LOOKING FOR LANGSTON represents a departure from the status quo of the image of black gay men while also attempting to reclaim the black gay identity and history that only now is beginning to be widely acknowledged by the general black community.
5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and equisite poetry in motion!
I first saw this film and have been entranced by it ever since- i can't explain it- it was like the first time I ever swam. The film is made so beautifully- it worships the contibution the poet Langston Hughes made on this earth- and also lends itself to celebrating the strength that other gay men- and, hell, anyone on the outer- should feel and be thankful for. Triumph of belief and passion over misguided energy and vanity. This film worships risk-takers, underdogs and worships the gentle strength in the human male (so rarely explored) and seems to celebrate our connection to nature in a very vividand timless way. As a confused aggressive gay man at 18 year old- i saw this film and felt like there was someone else on this earth who spoke my langauge and said- hey you! you're not alone- do what you want to do so passionately and be proud of what it is that you have to say, you have a right to be here. So feel free and be yourself- the world needs to hear what it is you feel. God bless the man that made this film- it tickles my soul. Thanks to my sweet Ma - thanks to her i am finally going to own this gem after 10 years of searching!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliant counter-history
Julien seeks to mine the archive of the Harlem Renaissance for what has been lost or forgotten, namely the role of gay black men--writers, visual artists, and singers--in official history. More than this, however, this film moves backward and forward in time, an homage to black gay men today and the dangers they face and have faced in U.S. history. The final coup of the film is that it is not about Langston Hughes but rather uses Hughes as an icon for the ineffability of identity itself--was Hughes gay or straight?Julien refuses to answer the question, refuses spectacle and surveillance as means of "spotting" identity.Julien's filmic language is also beautiful and subversive and he alters written texts, such as Bruce Nugent's Smoke, Lilies, and Jade (Nugent is now known as the first "out" African American writer) to fit his own political project.I have written an article on this film, 35 pages, forthcoming from VU University Press, Amsterdam, 2002, copyrighted, and think most reviews of the film are idiotic or simply do not understand the beauty and complexity of this very alternative film. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Jordan, the early years
If you have any doubt who the greatest basketball player of all time is, watch this video. This film was made nearly 15 years ago and it still wows me. I'm from Chicago so it is a Windy City bias. But it is true he is the best. Before the championships and him beating the Bad Boys, Jordan dazzled fans all over the nation with his 360 dunks, sick layups, incredible game winning shots and his winning attitude is what made up of Jordan before he won his six titles. This video also details his early life with his family, his daily battles on his families Basketball court with his older brother Larry. Him getting cut from his varsity high school team and his eventuall stardom at Laney high school. His successful run at North Carolina, with star teamates, James Worthy and Sam Perkins. Him winning the 1982 NCAA title against Patrick Ewing's Georgetown. Also relives his 1984 Olympic gold medal. Him being drafted third by the Bulls. Being passed over by the Portland TrailBlazers for.... Sam Bowie!!! The video also goes over Micheal's dramtic rise into stardom in 1984-85 where he won Rookie Of The Year. He then breaks his foot in early 1986 and he came all the way back, despite the Bulls front office telling him not to do it.He came back with fire, when in the 1986 playoffs, he scored 63 points against a team with four hall of famers, Bill Walton, Robert Parish, Kevin McHale, and of course, Larry Bird. This video is a gem to own, for any basketball fans, and MJ fans. Also, you can find this video on the Ultimate Jordan DVD collection, which I also own. You will love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR JORDAN FANS
One Word: Bestsportsvideoever. 5-0 out of 5 stars AIR JORDAN'S BEST VIDEO BY FAR!!
This is easily the best NBA video around.I wasn't sure at first but when I watched Jordan's gravity defying dunks and shots it blew me away!It has got more spectacular highlights than any other NBA video I have ever seen.It starts off with Jordans childhood on the baseball field, then his brilliant college days, then to the best stuff...his early days in the NBA where he earned lots of awards.Made before he stunned the world by leading the Bulls to a double three-peat,this tape captures the glory days of both slam-dunk contests, his injury and how he came by itto become the best player ever, all his dunks,lay-ups and game winners, his success in the olympics in L.A,and his own commentary on what it was like to be such a star performer. There is also some footage of his greatness at golf aswell.Only one dissapointment, not enough footage of his All-Star games.I ordered this over-seas because Britain dosent sell NBA videos. Also great service from Amazon.Buy this if you are an NBA fan and want to witness the greatest player ever...AIR JORDAN! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES
I can watch this movie over and over! True 70's movie that takes me back...RIP Tamara (10/2/2006)

4-0 out of 5 stars 'Cleopatra Jones' is a must see for 70s buffs.
I think Tamara Dobson is absolutely stunning in the movie she's no Pam Greir but she does have some spunk in her. 'Cleopatra Jones' is one of my favourite 1970s exploitation movies. While technically blaxploitation it bears very little resemblance to the grittiness and relative realism of 'Shaft', 'Superfly' or 'Black Caesar'. It is closer to 'Black Belt Jones' meets James Bond, especially the spectacular opening sequence in Turkey. If you don't take it too seriously this is fantastic fun.
4-0 out of 5 stars Black "woman power" films
I am a true fan of blaxploitation films especially when the film displays a woman and her ability to be a hero. It is still a male dominated world and even more so back then woman had to prove that they could hold their own. In this film a woman is the hero showing much strength and courage in her battle against the bad guys. I like how the film has an intellegent side to our hero making her more dangerous to the enemy by using not just her fist but her mind as well. Overall, a good movie. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not as funny as you might guess
Though I'd never seen the show, I ordered volume 2 because Chris Rock is the funniest man in the world. I was really disappointed. It's nothing like his stand-up. It's just a not-great sketch show. I laugh more during any given episode of SNL. The taxi cab confessions stuff is pretty good. Not worth owning.

1-0 out of 5 stars Chris Rock is Much Funnier Than This DVD Shows
Some people are more suited for sketch comedy while others are better at standup. Chris Rock is definitely a standup comedian. Be forewarned that this is a collection of moments from his HBO show and not a standup set. These sketches are not very funny nor are they original.

5-0 out of 5 stars Never seen an episode
I was in for a treat. This was all new Chris Rock for me.And I ate it up. Chris Rock is simply the best comic in a one man show.I don't have cable TV, and if I did, I would never be home to watch it, so with this being my first exposure to the Chris Rock Show, no wonder it is the hit it is.Great work. ... Editorial Review

Chris Rock lives up to his reputation on this second collection of sketches and parodies from his HBO series--he is not only funny, he has a genuine political edge, pointing up contradictions and racial tension in American society. His material ranges from mock investigative reports (including an exposé of racist toys like "Mr. Sweet Potato Head" and "Low Expectations Scrabble") to commercial parodies (such as ads for the Malcolm X Games--"Because being extreme isn't just for white devils anymore"). But his best work has got to be his genuine on-the-street interviews, in which he asks men at boxing gyms to name their favorite white fighter or asks random New Yorkers if black people should receive reparations for slavery. He even goes down to South Carolina to talk to residents about why the Confederate flag flies over the state capitol; he finally gets a number of people on the street to agree to a different flag that replaces the stars in the Confederate flag with the stars of the WB (like Brandy and Robert Townsend). What people are willing to say in front of him is both funny and frightening. Chris Rock makes cutting-edge comedy seem simple; after an hour of this show, it's incomprehensible why Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as funny as volume 1
This is my 2nd review in seven years. I bought this because of the almost 5 star rating. I loved volume 1 and thought this would be even better. The only things really funny were the racist toys, Mike Tyson for president (10 seconds long?), what not to do when getting pulled over by a cop and the taxi cab confessions. The confessions are a 30 minute video extra; otherwise this DVD would have nothing on it. It's a long hour when you hardly laugh. And what happened to Wanda Sykes?? She was hilarious in the 1st volume. If I had to do this again I'd buy only volume 1.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...Chris Rock Show, Priceless.
If you think Chappelle's Show is funny and you haven't seen the Chris Rock Show, you are in for a treat. You telling me you haven't seen the ORIGINAL Pootie Tang interview? Hilarious. Chris Rock's comedy is some of the best. A lot of Chappelle's Show skits aren't as up to par as some of the stuff on here. Chris Rock is one of the greatest comedians alive. I love this show. I wish they would continue making more seasons of this show. I would also recommend the FDTV: Volume One DVD. It has a different style of comedy blends that Chris Rock and Chappelle's Show doesn't have. As far as this DVD goes, BUY SEASON 1 & SEASON 2 of the Chris Rock Show. This stuff is classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Until season release sets come about, this one's it.
The first Best-Of had some great skits, but having now seen volume 2, I know there's MUCH MORE out there that deserves to be released as well!

5-0 out of 5 stars * * * * * for the film, cut is butchered...
First, I have to point out like one of the other reviewers, the company that released it has BUTCHERED the cut, scenes are put together out of order, stuff missing, etc.Its almost to the point of ruining the film... Unfortunately, the video edition is so hard to find you might have to settle for it anyway... and still the scenes are great, but the cut will make the film feel far choppier than it actually was - - Ashame because I actually like this one more than Dolemite. The opening credits alone with the ULTRA FUNKY MUSIC and the cheap opening credits is hillarious...especially when we find out that Dolemite was so funky that he created his own form of Kung Fu that incorporated funky disco movies - - and when he wasn't practising Kung Fu he had some funky moves (and ladies) elsewhere. In fact, while arguably many of the ladies on his album covers could look pretty nasty at times, the chicks in this film are built for speed - - and well exhibited.Take the legendary "interrogation" scene with Mrs. Cavalette (when Dolemite ummmmmmmmm... questions her so hard, the hotel room starts collapsing from the ceiling...
3-0 out of 5 stars So Bad, It's Good.
If you're in need of some good laughs and are willing to overlook poor dialogue, an even worse plot and shoddy camera work, this is your movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Kung-Fu is worth the purchase price alone!!!
Don't believe the fools who doubt Rudy Ray Moore!!! How can people look at the Dolemite movies seriously? The opening credits are printed on his GIANT JAMES-BROWN-STYLE CAPE!! You'll never enjoy the sensory overload and outright absurdity of these movies if you try to THINK about them. Just have a six-pack and a few smart-mouthed friends around when you watch it. One of the greatest and most memorable moments in the civil rightsmovement occurred when 200,000 people marched on Washington, D.C., on August 28, 1963. Not only was the gathering of so many united people extraordinary, but that day Martin Luther King Jr. stood before the marchers anddelivered his most eloquent and inspiring speech. This video offers the "I Have a Dream" speech in its entirety, as well as footage of the opposition the protesters faced, such as the fire hoses the police in Alabama used to disperse the crowds. The narrator explains that the hoses shot 700 pounds of pressure, enough to strip the bark off a tree. However, the grimness of this era is not the only focus in this video. Dr. King had so much hope and faith in thesuccess of the civil rights movement, and the greatest demonstration of this is in the famous speech. He uses modern metaphors and poetry to get his message out clearly, as when he describes the capitol as having given blacks a check marked "insufficient funds," but he reminds us that they will refuse to believe the bank of justice is bankrupt, that they will cash their check for riches of freedom and security of justice. Throughout the speech he emphasizes his mission: nonviolence as a method of overcoming ("Soul force against militant force") and the importance of walking together as a unified group, and never walking alone. Although the video ends with his death, it still leaves the viewer feeling uplifted with Robert Kennedy's memorial address, pleading with Americans to hold on to Dr. King's views and adopt them as their own. A concise video with one of the greatest speeches of our time. Read more

Essential for any thinking man over the age of 40 in the United States.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Presentation.
I found this presentation of King's speech to be excellently portrayed. After a brief introduction, about 5 minutes about the civil right's movement and circumstances leading up to the famous march on Washington, the speech is presented in its entirety. Some of the footage leading up to the speech is emotionally graphic - high pressure fire houses being used on peaceful demonstrators and footage from the aftermath of the Church bombing.
4-0 out of 5 stars i to have a dream
They say we wouldn't we shouldn't and we couldn't make it.They say that we are the odds of the crowd. We to have dreams.Dreams of seeing the sky.We to have dreams so don't come with whys.We are to motivated to start dividacation between this nation. We ALL are created equal just like the God created us.We have to much knowledge to come apart. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic! Misunderstood! Bring your brain *and* your gut. This is the most socially conscious of Pryor's stand-up movies.
Don't believe the negative reviews. I repeat: don't buy the lukewarm responses.
3-0 out of 5 stars Not his best, but has its moments
I saw this at the old Jefferson Square Theater in Columbia, SC when I was in college in 1983. Pryor's last concert film, and not one of his better ones. Some interesting moments though. Mudbone appears in one of his rare filmed skits (compare this with the "Richard Pryor Show" DVD which repeats the classic Mudbone performance from "Is It Something I Said"). There is a really interesting moment when Pryor talks to a fiddler crab that crawls on his stool that is the kind of one-man theater that distiguished Pryor from his cursing copycats who had all of the profanity but none of the profundity of the master. He also does a frightfully accurate rendition of a junkie going on a nod. You can tell that he knows what he's talking about. In either case, this is for fans only. Rest in Peace brother Pryor.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pearls Before Swine
Pryor was brilliant in this set. However, as other reviewers have pointed out, his audience seemed to be composed of the inhabitants of every podunk village in Louisiana, who saw attendance at his show as the crowning moment of their lives, and wanted to make sure Pryor and the rest of the world knew just how momentous it was by announcing it at the top of their lungs, never stopping their celebration long enough to actually listen to Pryor's routine. He had to contend with a constant barrage of drunken heckling but he still managed to weave spellbinding stories and make brilliant impromptu observations about everyday life. In fact, he frequently turned the boorish behavior of the audience to his advantage, and constructed several brilliant bits of business from their sometimes bizarre antics. Still, it was particularly sad to watch the contrast between the profundity of Pryor's depiction of a broken down junkie and the audience's complete incomprehension of what Pryor was revealing. All the same, Pryor manages to transcend his audience's limitations and create a world of characters and experiences that was fascinating, touching and hilarious. If you can manage to do the same, and overlook the audience and immerse yourself in Pryor's world, it will be well worth the effort. Don't sleep on this one. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent sequel to the dynamite first film--
Army veteran Slaughter's latest adventure doesn't take him to South America (incongruously referenced as Mexico here), but there's still plenty of trouble to be found in the U.S.
4-0 out of 5 stars Much Better Than "Slaughter"
A lot of people feel that the original "Slaughter" is the best one, but "Rip Off" is a much superior sequel. This is still a "revenge flick", but the characters are far more intersting. Jim Brown gets to have alot more fun and alot more sex. The added bonus is Dick Anthony Williams portrayal as a Pimp/Burgular who helps Slaughter bring down the Mob.The only downside to this one is that most of the songs from James Brown's classic soundtrack are missing from the movie.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not So Exciting: See the First "Slaughter" & Stella Instead
"Slaughter" may not be exactly a first-rate action film, but it still can be proud of its own energy and Stella Stevens. Its quickly-made sequel has none of them; instead, you got Ed McMahon as a villain.Oh no....Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If it's perfection you must see...LOOK AT ME!!!!
This movie is hilarious. Nonstop laughter. I taped it off lifetime when it first aired and lost it. I recently moved and lo and behold I found it. I am shocked it didn't come out on the big screen. It's so much better than most of this slop they put out now. My favorite parts are when Jackie has the woman on the infomercial to eat the relaxer, when Jackie and Kim fight over the dresses, and when Jackie is trying to convince everyone to calm down about getting paid. "Leave Jackie to worry about the money" "You want to get paid? Honey, I don't carry cash, my daughter Antandra will take care of everything" "My good friend liza gave me that oscar, she wasn't using it" " I can't add or subtract but I learned alot about life and that's what matters." I could go on and on. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars AUNTANDRA???
