5-0 out of 5 stars ABAR is the baddest brotha' in cinematic history!
Despite the rediculously inaccurate box-art, this is an excellent, excellent party film. The title "In Your Face" exists only on the box and video itself, for when you pop it into the VCRyou are immediately greeted with the true title, "ABAR".Grin with glee as our hero, ABAR, sticks it to the suckas who are trying to run a black doctor out of a white neighborhood. There's an excellent "ABAR jump-kicks a dude" scene that you'll have to watch for.The story heats up to a fever pitch, when, after all other ideas are exhausted, the doctor decides to use his rabbit-juice to convert ABAR into an INDESTRUCTIBLE EBONY SUPERMAN!It has to be seen to be believed!Get your buddies in a room with a TV, and have an ABAR party tonight! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars reviewing brentweood home video version
I have to agree with the past reviewer that the scenes they cut out would have made it a watchable movie. All that I was left with was Jim Kelly beating up other grown men AND midgets. The final fight against the strong guy was the most trouble I had paying attention to a movie in a long time.I do have to say that Kelly did have acting ability, just don't expect for it to get showcased in this movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars NEVER The White Knight, Baby...
This is an excellent Kung-Fu classic from the 70's that has unfortunately been neutered by the ridiculous (and unexplained) editing of Brentwood Home Video.Look for the VHS copy made by Continental Video in the 80's & 90's.The Continental video has all the cut nudity, cursing and explicit violence that movie goers in the 70's would have seen.Don't buy this jive-turkey by Brentwood unless you are desperate to see the movie.Instead, search around for the Continental copy. You won't be disappointed. On to the review...
5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Movie Ever Made
Black Samurai has everything you could ever want in a movie: Karate, Jim Kelly, midgets, poisonous snakes, shag carpeting, babes, a purple sports car, a gay warlock, the sleaziest Argentinian henchman imaginable, bad Seventies fashion, blue eye shadow, guys in 30's Tarzan movie African outfits, voodoo, samurai swords, snappy dialogue, and an amazing story line.

4-0 out of 5 stars Concise History
This intriguing video covers a lot of ground in 60 minutes or less and does so in classic A & E quality. 4-0 out of 5 stars A good one hour documentary, but not the best in the world
This was an interesting documentary, but the directorial artsy stuff was quite curious. Filters (?) on the camera lenses gave the skies wierd hues and landscapes were odd colors, too. And that "turn the camerasideways" thing was in most of the still shots. Read more

William Marshall, a Shakespearean actor with a rich baritone voice, enriches this otherwise bland blaxploitation vampire film with his strong, seductive performance. He's Manuwalde, a European-educated 18th-centuryAfrican prince who appeals to the Count Dracula for help in ending theslave trade. Dracula, never known as a great emancipator, puts the bite onManuwalde's troubles, dubs him "Blacula" (the only time the name is utteredin the film), and imprisons him in a casket. Stirred to life, so to speak, centuries later in Los Angeles by gay antique hunters, he steps into thesoulful '70s and splits his energies between feeding his bloodlust andwooing a young beauty (Vonetta McGee), a dead ringer for his long-deadwife. 3-0 out of 5 stars Through The Black Of Night, I Gotta Go Where You Are
Nothing like being prone to nostalgia!
4-0 out of 5 stars william marshall make "blacula" better than it should be.
this blaxplotion horror movie gets it's power and charm from william marshall's forceful job as an african prince bitten by dracula and later brought back to life in 1970's watts. the story gets silly in spots but just as it is about to fold under it's own weight, marshall pulls it back and makes a 2 star movie into a 4 star tour de force. the fact that hollywood never really gave this great actor better roles is the shame of the movie world.

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Modern Turn On The Old Vampire Legend
I've always had a particular fondness for this film which I believe was a "first" in a lot of ways in 1972, but rather sadly it seems to now be regarded as a bit of a joke by alot of modern audiences more's the pity. Released in early 1972 just as the Vampire cycle of films in both America and England was coming to a close "Blacula", provided a unique twist on the Vampire legend and presented us with a very urbane black Vampire played by deep voiced William Marshall. His vampire is ultimately quite a tragic figure when you learn the facts of how he got to that state and Marshall in his performance is not only up to carrying on the vampire legend but also manages to depict his character for most part in a highly sympathetic light that breathed life into the old legend.

5-0 out of 5 stars TRUESTORY OF THE EVENS AFTER MALCOMX DEATH
This incredible film follows the events in the final twenty four hours of the life of controversial religious and political leader Malcolm X. Fanatics tried to firebomb his home. They tried to murder him white he slept. Why was he so hated? Where were the police on the day of his assassination? How did his killers manage to escape?

3-0 out of 5 stars An Intimate View of a Marked Man
This movie is nowhere near as flashy or as gripping as Spike Lee's "Malcolm X". It presents a more low key and gritty picture of a man quietly going on with his life's work even while knowing that someone has marked him for death. The lack of Hollywood flair makes this movie feel more realistic than Spike Lee's film, like you're actually walking around the city with Malcolm. Still I missed the sense of energy that Denzel Washington brought to the role. Freeman's Malcolm is someone you like and respect, but he doesn't charismatically draw you into his vision like Washington did in his portrayal, or perhaps like the real Malcolm did. In any case this DVD is worth seeing for its sense of realism, whichperhaps serves as something of a counterbalance to visions of Malcolm X, the demi-god of our imagination, when after all he was a flesh and blood man, albeit a man of great vision, courage and charisma. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars you just don't want to part with this film..
Was it Jamaica Kincaid who said that there are books you just can't part with? That you just have to take them with you after you read them at, for instance, a library? (Well, whoever it was, was she justifying book thefts? I like to think so, for I understand such a quick and strong 'attraction' to certain books myself. There really are books that you can't part with.) 4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent portrayal of the artistic process...
This movie is the story of a woman that wishes to become a film-maker.She becomes obsessed with an actress from the 30's - and begins searching for information on her, and films a documentary in the process.Soon, the lead's love life begins paralleling the actress that she is researching.4-0 out of 5 stars Insightful Examination of Black Lesbian Indentity
The best films inform and enlighten as well as entertain.Cheryl Dunye's debut feature, WATERMELON WOMAN doesjust that.It takes the viewer on a fascinating journey into one black woman's life as she searches for a lesbian role model. She finds her in the form of a mysterious figure known only as the "Watermelon Woman."Utilizing a light-hearted,documentary style approach, Dunye (who also stars in the film) has crafted an intelligent and entertaining film that will resonatewith many viewers, irrespective of one's sexual orientation.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Blessing for Rudy Ray Fans
Personally, I don't think there's anything quite as compelling as a good documentary, and this is a really good documentary.I've been a Dolemite fan for ages, but I knew nothing about Rudy Ray's career before the '70s, like when he first introduced the Dolemite character, or that fifty years ago he was known as R&B singer Prince Dumar.1-0 out of 5 stars Rudy! You got my money!

Editorial Review

In the opening five minutes of this documentary two memorable quotes immediately grab your attention. The first comes from an enthusiastic commentator who rhetorically asks, "Whose game is it? Michael Jordan's game." This may have been said in a moment of energetic excitement, but the words ring true. As do the more seasoned and professional articulations of former Phoenix Suns coach Paul Westphal, who after losing to Jordan's Chicago Bulls in the world championship, profoundly states what the world already knew: "No one can stop him." Apparently, the only man who could stop His Airness was Michael himself.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Michael Jordan videos out there
If you're a Michael Jordan fan, this is definitely one video you can't miss.It covers everything from Jordan's journey to winning his firstthree championships all the way to when he made his comeback to the game ofbasketball. The best thing about "Above & Beyond" is that italso has everything in between. It tells of all the struggles and triumphshe had after winning his third championship such as when his father diedand the good things that happened while he was playing minor leaguebaseball.4-0 out of 5 stars Well worth it !
Watched it over 6 times already! It documents his first 3-peat, his father's death followed by his baseball period. Most importantly, it shows what it took for Jordan to regain is prominence in the game again - sheerhard work and practice. Truly a lesson in life for anyone - the video'sworth it.

Editorial Review

Anyone who loves soul music or rhythm & blues probably knows that it all springs from the roots of gospel music. This 1982 documentary by director George T. Nierenberg breaks it all down beautifully as he examines the lives and careers of a handful of since-departed gospel stars, who helped create the genre from which so many other forms of music flowed. Focusing on the aging but still vigorous "Professor" Thomas A. Dorsey and "Mother" Willie Mae Ford, he also offers musical moments by such gospel stalwarts as Sallie Martin and the Barrett Sisters. Live performances are mixed with telling, sometimes touching reminiscences by these pioneers of a musical style, all leading to several striking points: principally, that this energetic music took time to be accepted by the conservatives in the church, and that the music itself has a surprising power to raise spirits and confirm faith. Yet it's all done in a way that is spiritual without being preachy. A truly joyful film. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Say Amen, Somebody
Regardless of anyone's race or creed, this movie provides rare nourishment for the soul. With its message of love and hope contagious, Director Nierenberg fashions a touchingly human and uplifting portrait of gospel music that translates how this special music has sustained people through adversity. A humbling and glorious film.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gospel Music Lovers, Don't Miss This One!
If you're into Gospel Music (the older clasic type) and even if you're not, this is one of the most moving , informative, authentic documentaries I've ever see.Maybe that's why it won an academy award when it was released.I saw it then at the theatre, and later on video, and it's lost none of its power. It took a European to make it, which is just more proof how little we as Americans care about what many consider the most influencial form of African- American music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Give me that Old time religion
For those who have not yet goten a grip of the new strange stuff in the gospel scene, this is for you.For those who have got all the latest music, this is for you too.It shows the background of songs such as "precious Lord".Also it goes on to show how the gospel music had to fight to be where it was int he early eigthies.Thomas Dorsey is also a little entertainer and Willie Mae Ford Smith is definitely a minister for the truth whatever the cost.Get it and you will not be disappointed ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Cinematic Masterpiece
Eschewing conventional acting methodology, Rudy Ray Moore inhabits Dolemite with an unparalleled ferocity. His signature line, "I'm Dolemite, Mutha(expletive)" is delivered time and time again in a drunken slur: a brutal, but anguished, plea for sanity. To the untrained eye, it might seem like Dolemite's karate kicks are not even connecting with his foes, but this is a metaphor for the never ending conundrum of the pimp/poet/warrior.Watch for the symbolism inherent in the furry hat and pay close attention to the pants that come up to his armpits as both are integral to understanding the magnificence that is Dolemite.

This movie is worth buying just for these two reasons:
5-0 out of 5 stars Cinematic Masterpiece!!
I recently had the pleasure of watching a film starring the Hunkiest specimen of Man-meat ever to grace the silver screen. It was Rudy Ray Moore in Dolemite. Let me start off by saying this is quite possibly the finest film ever made. Dolemite himself is a man so baaad that he doesn't even feel the need to be in good shape to impress us, he let's his martial arts do the talkin'. If Jackie Chan, Jet Li, and Tony Jaa were all combined into one glorious person they would still aspire to be Dolemite. To the untrained eye it would appear that Dolemite is not actually hitting people in the fight scenes. In reality he is just so fast that he can snap his hands and feet there and back so quickly that it gives the viewer the illusion that his foot is six inches away from the targets head.

Using Ms. Morrison's experience of the actual writing of and the content of Beloved, this video captures a most amazing discussion of the degradation of slavery as told by the victims of the "peculiar institution."5-0 out of 5 stars The truth of how the soul can survive degradation
This video should be seen by all americans. The legacy of slavery has never truly been dealt with in America. The effects of slavery on black americans in the past and today is finally examined thoroughly. As such, all black americans must see this to understand and acknowledge their past. Many may find it hard to follow "Beloved".However, through thereadings from the book by Morrison and others in this video, theincomparable imagery within the book is brought to the forefront. As aresult, the complex issues and concepts within "Beloved" are madeeasier to understand.I have come to realize that this book should be readaloud to be fully understood. After seeing this video, you will not beable to deny that "Beloved" is one of the most important books ofthis century.Like no other writer before her, Morrison explores the powerof the human soul to soar above persecution and degradation. You will findyourself watching this video repeatedly. The depth of Toni Morrison'sdiscussion, of what I have come to know as the truth, is amazing. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars For the questioning teen
This film consists of three African shorts by three female directors. They've chosen Queen Latifah to introduce each of the films. These are films that will intrigue your teenager and put to question for adults, how can we help our youth make better decisions? This film is an excellet film that can used in schools, community clubs, and church orgranizations to bring about discussion of topics that might seem racy but real! Life-like teen issues for all to sift through for understanding and clarity to see hhow some of their choices might play out. Gritty and real. Loved it. This movie gets 4 stars because some of the cinematography is weak but other than that -- super films.

5-0 out of 5 stars JOHN BROWN'S HOLY WAR
Have been wanting to own this excellent video since I saw it on PBS several years ago.I was really shocked when I saw the price at this site as $75.00.One of your reviewers mentioned that I could go to PBS and get the video for $25.00.I went to PBS.org and found the video for only $19.95. S&H added another $4.95.Why is the price listed at AMAZON.COM $50 higher than on PBS?Please tell me this was a mistake! There are probably a lot of other customers who would like to purchase this video, but at $75.00, it's more than most are willing to pay.

5-0 out of 5 stars BUY IT AT PBS.ORG FOR $25 NEW!!!$84 is CRIMINAL!
PBS.org has an online store where you can buy this same video for $19 new ($24 with shipping)! This $84 for a used copy is absolutely criminal and this seller should bury his/her greedy head in shame.Don't buy a used copy of something you can get new for sixty dollars cheaper from the place that created this documentary.By the way it's a great documentary and well worth seeing and owing (I do.) I love Amazon and they always have the BEST deals around on videos, DVDs and books, but this seller is taking everyone for a ride. ... Read more
