Editorial Review

Barbra Streisand made her directorial debut with this 1983 adaptation of the Isaac Bashevis Singer story about a young Eastern European woman (Streisand) who disguises herself as a male at the turn of the century in order to get an education. Except for an excessive musical score with too many songs and Streisand's tiresome tendency to play characters who suppress their beauty, the film is crisp and engaging, and the gender-bending love story complications are fun, if gimmicky. Streisand gives a smart, vulnerable performance and gets fresh work from costars Mandy Patinkin and Amy Irving.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yentl DVD playable in the us
I cannot imagine why this is not on a DVD, version that can be played on any DVD in the USA.I have been seeking one for two years now.

5-0 out of 5 stars I NEED THIS MOVIE TO BE RELEASED!!!!!
I totally GOT this movie!!I LOVE LOVE Barbra Streisand, and I have seen ALL her Movies.Yentl is one of my all time favorites!
5-0 out of 5 stars How could anyone give this film anything but 5 stars?
This is one of my favorite movies. It is a very interesting and moving picture and also very funny in some parts (Anshel's first night of wedded bliss with Hadass comes to mind.) Barbra Streisand was so talented in "Yentl." But I think Mandy Patinkin was just as entertaining, maybe more because the character of Avigdor was so multifaceted. They worked so well together. I don't understand how a classic like this is not on DVD? How could anyone give this film anything but 5 stars? ... Read more

This strange experiment in filmed conversation finds three people--a physicist, a poet, a politician--yammering about the environment, science, art, government, and much else, all in an effort either to find or to dispute connections between disparate subjects. There is no story, as such--just lots of chatter (much of it not particularly profound) shot against a variety of picturesque backgrounds. If director Bernt Capra thought this would turn out to be another Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars MINDWALK!I will never be the same again!
I saw this movie by accident, by surfing the stations, and now I will never be the same again!I have been living in a "Verbal Cocoon" and not in Reality, no not really, but I feel alot of people are and do. What is interesting is to read all 78 reviews, at this point of time and see how each person abstracts different views and feelings of the movie.I want to thank Amazon, that they have this feature of open reviews, weather they are Good, bad or indifferent. I feel that is what the movie reflexs, that our enviroment reflects how we see and observe or self and life.General Semantics refers to this as "Map to the Territory".The Map is what is going on inside our head, and the Territory is what is going on outside our head. Maps are not all that reliable, as they have to be changed to fit the territory, that which is going on outside your head. One purpose of Education, is to continue to update the map, which is in your head, to the ever changing Territory, which is outside your head.Example. When you go to a college or High School reunion, the people you remember, say 20 years ago are not the same as now, so you update that map to fit the new territory.Mindwalk, lets your mind open up and seefuture territories, and the ever changing ways of life. First off there are NO answers, only temporary solutions, for the World and universe is in a continue state of flux. If you look at nature,It is not black and white, it is in all degrees, the weather, the sky, the colors, not in absolutes. In nature there is no right or wrong, only process. It doesn't matter what a thing is, what does it DO!The life unexamed is not worth living, Know thy self! You never can define a word completely, for then you have to define the words in the defination and so on, therefore you have to have a point of reference to go by.What can be shown can't be SAID!I find all this comes out in the movie.I find it would be better on DVD, as then you could pause it after each important discourse.I find the book "Levels of knowing and Existence by Harry L. Weinberg also the book people in Quandaries, by Wendell Johnson, will benifit your Thinking process, in this ever Global-warming ever changing World.

5-0 out of 5 stars The life feels itself!
Based on the famous book "Turning point" of Fritoj Capra, this unusual movie is a true food for thinking around a great variety of important issues that surrounds us; an intrepid journey through the diverse spheres of the knowledge, from the atom's nature, the environmental subjects, the concept of evolution understood as untiring expression of creativity, science's ethic; sharp reflections around a vast number of aspects that concerns us in minor or major grade.
5-0 out of 5 stars The 3 P's : Physics, Politics and Poetry
Don't be fooled by how intelligent this movie is.

Editorial Review

Paul Newman, an American original, would seem to be the perfect choice to direct a film adaptation of the second novel by another American original--Ken Kesey. But Kesey's novel, written under the influence of both LSD and growing fame, was a mishmash, and Newman's film can't rescue it. It also seems strange to see the ultraliberal Newman starring as a strike-busting logger who honors a contract on principle, rather than observe union concerns, bringing all sorts of misery down on his family. Henry Fonda is interesting as Newman's father, but the film never finds its footing. One killer sequence, however: Richard Jaeckel, as Newman's brother, trapped under a log in a river, slowly drowning despite Newman's best efforts to save him. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Criterion, What Are You Waiting For?
This epic, powerfully acted, and visually breathtaking movie beg for the Criterion DVD treatment. What can they be waiting for?The characters in this film, bigger than life, seem to be acted by the only actors who could possibly do justice to the roles. The cinematography is lush and beautifully composed on location in the Pacific Northwest, and the dialogue keeps the film moving effortlessly, as though one were a member of the family of loggers portrayed in the film.Sign me up to purchase the DVD as soon as it is released, hopefully by Criterion. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars By Far My Favorite Disney Movie!!!
I love this movie because it's very cute and sweet. One of my favorite parts is when all the dogs are sending around the "twilight bark". It's kind of like in The Resuers Down Under when the mice send around the message.
4-0 out of 5 stars This is a Cute Movie!.
One Hundred and one Dalmations is a really good Disney movie and it's a cute story that everyone in the family can enjoy and I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars AWSOME MOVIE
I agree with every one else ... RAD ROCKS and there are probably about 100,000 super suky dvd's out there ... come dvd converter studios ... what's up !!!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars RAD
I bought the VHS RAD not too long ago and I had to pay a little more then I wanted but it was well worth it for my childhood favorite movie. I would watch that movie over and over again with my friends when I was a kid. They need to put it out on DVD, every month I look for it to be out on DVD and every month I am disappointed. I don't think they would have a problem selling it on DVD because everyone remebers the bike dancing scene. The movie is a classic!!! The VHS is great but I want a DVD, I am sure the VHS could be copy to CD but that would not do it justice it deserves to be re-released and digitaly enhanced and such by the studio. Look at all the other crap release on DVD. It is just is not fair to let a classic movie like RAD fade away.

5-0 out of 5 stars AWSOME, WONDERFUL, GREAT STUNTS
I have been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD for years now.You can't even buy it on VHS unless someone is putting it up for auction on E-bay.The production company should hurry up and put this compelling movie on DVD and get it over with.Quite sure I am not the only one who wants to purchase. This is a wonderful movie for kids as well as adults of any age.My son and brother loves this movie, especially the bike stunts. This is truly a movie to have in your personal library.Hope the production company decides to put on DVD very soon. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Romantic Sleeper
Crossing Delancey tells the story of two people from different socio-economic backgrounds who meet and stumble to try to form a relationship.Izzy is a young professional who meets Sam through her Jewish grandmother's matchmaker. When Izzy learns that her "match" sells pickles she's quick to try and hide her date from her friends. She's also quick to judge.Meanwhile, Sam has wholeheartedly fallen for Izzy, oblivious to the fact that she's a little embarrassed about his job.Can she overcome her preconceived notions about the man?

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my top ten favorites
Crossing Delancey is one of the most intelligent, sweet, REAL love stories ever. Made a Peter Riegert fan of me... he makes all the "pretty boy" protagonists look shallow and plastic.I have given away two copies of the VHS version, and am rapidly wearing out the third.I can see a definite need for a DVD.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must Release DVD
This movie has You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle beat, without a doubt. (While You've Got Mail was fine, Sleepless in Seattle was rather contrived, with wall-to-wall romantic music, which for me made it not at all appealing, as much as I like Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks.)

Oddball scientist Fred Z. Randall (Harland Williams) is nobody's idea of an astronaut. But he turns out to be NASA's only hope when the first manned mission to Mars comes up one man short. So it's up to Fred, who instantly rubs the ship's commander (William Sadler) and specialist (Jessica Lundy) the wrong way--but makes eerily good friends with the ship's chimp. A movie whose rude, gas-laced sense of humor will appeal to kids; adults may also get a few chuckles out of Canadian funnyman Williams, who does countless impressions and makes endless faces and funny noises. Think of him as the poor man's Jim Carrey. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You hairy little bed-stealer! This needs to be DVD-released NOW!!!
Rocket Man is another favorite of mine. Recently, UPN teased us by showing it on TV. Got my hopes up that the next time I was at Best Buy or any other DVD retailer that I would finally get my hands on this gem. But no. PLEASE IN THE NAME OF ALL THAT IS HOLY, RELEASE THIS ON DVD! To anyone curious about viewing this movie, it's great fun and shouldn't be missed. Harland Williams is absolutely hilarious as a computer whiz who winds up getting sent on a mission to Mars. It's a Disney movie so prepare for a tidy ending as usual, but you'll be laughing the whole way through this journey, especially once they are on Mars. I don't want to give away any more and spoil it for you all, but if you think Williams is funny in Half Baked or even in his bit part as the serial killer in There's Something About Mary just to name a few, he's an absolute riot in this. For now, you'll have to rent/buy on VHS, but let's hope that this makes its way onto DVD soon!

5-0 out of 5 stars Duh! Vinci Code
Thirty five years ago when I used to thread the 16mm version through a projector in my 4th grade classroom, I, and my students, thought it was the most entertaing, fascinating film we ever saw. After I stopped teaching, I searched for it for years, just wanting to have it in my collection. I finally found it used, on Amazon, watched it once just to bring back the memories, then put it on my shelf. Then I read The da Vinci Code. I couldn't believe it! All the reference to the golden rectangle, golden ratio, proportions of the pentagram, the Pythagorean Society, and even Disney himself! And to think I was teaching all that to my 9 year olds in the 60's before Dan Brown was even born! A fun video for any math lover.

There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars amazing
i remembre first finding callanetics, about ten years ago,and i have to say after getting very big with each child, callan always brings me back to an amazing beautiful body.
4-0 out of 5 stars Take your time and keep doing it!
I did callanetics at a gym about 6 years ago, and I remember dropping 1 dress size after only one month. Then life got in the way and I stopped doing it.When I saw this tape on Amazon, I had to buy it.I've been doing the tape for the past 2 weeks, and I have to tell you, I can feel my body getting firmer and more flexible. The exercises are hard, so don't let Callan's soft tone and slow pace fool you.Take your time and don't be discouraged. Some reviews complained about how boring the music and Callan are.I turn the radio on in the background while I do the tape to alleviate that problem.Slow and steady wins the race.Take your time, keep the right form, and you'll be fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great workout video
I love Callanetics! I am very athletic and have extremely musclular thighs, I always have since I was little. So I don't like to workout with weights at the gym that much because I start bulking up even when I am doing lots of cardio. Anyways I started swimming and doing Callanetics and yoga and I really have liked the result. I feel as if my legs look a lot leaner more like a dance than a body builder. I also like doing the quick calanetic tapes if you just want to work on one troublesome area. Although this tape is 80's style Its definitely a keeper. Just watch your form when performing the exercises! Hope this helped and you get to meet all your summer fitness goals. :) ... Read more

Missionaries travel to the Brazilian rain forest and make a mess of everything. What else is new? Actually, plenty in this dark but beautifully realized adaptation of Peter Matthiessen's well-regarded novel, directed by Hector Babenco. Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kathy Bates, and John Lithgow play the Americans who travel to the Brazilian interior in an effort to do some good. But their definitions of good vary wildly; Bates and Lithgow are old-fashioned puritans who want to convert the heathens to Christianity and remove all traces of their own culture. Quinn and Hannah are more spiritually minded, hoping to make a connection and a cultural exchange with the Indians they encounter. In the end, they're all delusional, trapped in their own preconceptions. Downbeat but magical in its way, with sterling performances all around and amazing scenery, to say the least. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding in the "Fields"
I too have been waiting for this film on DVD..I have read the book twice and wholeheatedly endorse everything the director and amazing actors submitted themselves to,,(heat, general lack of amenities etc ) to bring us this absolutely great flick. I also love the similarly placed Aguirra Wrath of God,,what ever HACK wrote the New Yorker Summary as it appears above, should be suspended by his thumbs orbetter yet, whatever,,he missed the point totally,,saying the mid 60 attitudes have changed,,HA! Stupid would-be reviewer would probably make a similar statement about Pride & Prejudice or War and Peace,,buddy,we are talking universals here some things never change not will they ever,,,I wish Amazon would remove the big blurb described it does no good whatsoever,,having said my piece I will retreat and brood,,

4-0 out of 5 stars Waiting for DVD
This is one of the best movies I've had a privilege to view. But waiting for the DVD has been forever, where is it? When do we get a chance to see this happening. Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars Bates gives incredible performance!
This is a 1991 film, but don't miss it! It's a rather long tale, but you won't be bored a single minute. Bates gives a stellar performance as the wife of a missionary sent to convert the 'jungle natives'. When the mission goes very wrong, she goes mad. Berenger plays a native american who flies them in on a plane, and after he sees the bravery of a jungle native, strives to return to his 'wild heritage' by heading out to join the tribe. It's a great tale of how horribly wrong things can go when the white world tries to force their ways upon a primitive culture. It's a very deep, passionate, historic movie that warrants being watched at least twice. All the actors seem to 'feel' the importance of its message and give their roles one-hundred percent. Bravo!

The 1951 John Huston classic, set in Africa during World War I, garnered Humphrey Bogart an Oscar for his role as a hard-drinking riverboat captain in Africa, who provides passage for a Christian missionary spinster (Katharine Hepburn). Taking an instant, mutual dislike to one another, the two endure rough waters, the presence of German soldiers, and their own bickering to finally fall into one another's arms. This is classic Huston material--part adventure, part quest--but this time with a pair of characters who'd all but given up on happiness. 5-0 out of 5 stars African Queen deserves royal treatment....on DVD!!!!!!!!!
This movie is way looooong over due to be put on DVD. I find it amazing how some of the crapiest movies get released on DVD, yet this wonderful gem of a movie has yet to see the light of day on
5-0 out of 5 stars Should be rated "G" not Unrated.
This movie should have a "G" rating becauseit's a classic film from 1952. I saw this movie in 1990 when I was 10. I liked it then and, I like it now. There's nothing explicit in this movie at all. That's why it should be rated "G".

5-0 out of 5 stars Undiminished Classic Carries the Unshakable Triumvirate of Bogart, Hepburn and Huston at Their Peak
The reputation of this deserved classic rests primarily on the shoulders of master director John Huston and his two legendary stars, Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. The story itself, penned by Huston and James Agee (with uncredited help from Peter Viertel) based on a novel by C.S. Forester, is a two-character high adventure that moves its narrative in a rather contrived manner. Yet, the resulting 1951 film sparkles in a burnished aura of Hollywood lore, as Clint Eastwood saw fit to make a film about the production itself with 1990's "White Hunter, Black Heart" and Hepburn herself wrote an entertaining memoir 36 years after the fact with the seemingly apt title, "The Making of the African Queen: Or How I Went to Africa With Bogart, Bacall and Huston and Almost Lost My Mind". Between Bogart's apparent boozing, Huston's big game obsessions, Hepburn's idiosyncrasies and the challenging African jungle, it must have been quite an unpredictable set.

"Angus" is a movie about a shy 14 year old who doesn't fit in. He is humiliated and picked on by others at school, and spends most of his time hanging out with his friend, another outsider named Troy, and his grandfather, and dreaming of being with the school's hottest cheerleader, Melissa Lefevre. One day, his dreams come true, somewhat, when he is chosen to dance with Melissa at the Winter Ball. However, the set up was planned by Melissa's boyfriend, and Angus' arch nemesis, Rick Sanford. Angus decides to finally stand up to Rick, and lets him know that he prefers to be different.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Superman is not brave..."
ok, so yeah. This movie is like.... awesome! I was in florida on vacation when my mother first saw it and she told me on the phone that I had to see it because all she thought while watching the movie was that it was my life. honestly, anyone who has ever been the pet whipping boy of their school should see this movie. hell, anyone wh ever bullied someone because they were different should see it, they may learn a lesson from it. from the beginning it grabs your attention and holds it all the way through the end. I really wish they would hurry up with the dvd release of it. the soundtrack is phenominal. I still get funny looks when people are looking through my cd case and find the CD with a blowup doll on it. lol. one song that I l;oved in the film, however is not one the soundtrack. for any of you looking for this song it's by peter gabriel and it's called the washing of the water. but aside from the soundtrack. WATCH THIS MOVIE. especially if you haven't yet grasped the concept that "there is no normal" ... Read more

This movie was very good! The actors played their parts well, and the story is entertaining from beginning to end.It almost makes you want to get into motocross racing! There was friendship, romance, and of course, motocross, in this well-thought out and family friendly movie. All the characters were enjoyable and easy to relate to.Alana Austin was especially good as Andrea, the main character.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Film and Worth the Purchase
This is a great DVD that our son loves to watch. I don't think it is as good as the original but sequels rarely are. It's certainly worth the purchase and has a lot of extras on the disc. I have seen it less expensive in other stores however.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buzz & Woody Are Back
Yes it's true and people didn't think it could be done, Buzz & Woody back for a second adventure. In this film Woody finds out the real reason why he was made, he was a character on a TV show and Woody is one of the last remaining dolls made for that TV show.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent pick for all
Toy Story 2 is just as good as (or even better than) Toy Story 1.Great animation, very funny and teaches valuable lessons without the sadness. Some of the animated movies have scenes that are hard to watch, for example the opening scene in Finding Nemo or the beginning of Tarzan. My son watches those scenes in horror (and so do I).Toy Story 2 and Toy Story 1 have such an original storyline that is so endearing, and it is such a well rounded movie that it is an excellent pick for all.I also like the fact that the toys don't sing and dance as in most animated movies, and yet the music is excellent.I particularly love the song (composer: Randy Newman) when Buzz realizes he is just a toy and can't fly and tries to fly out the window.Me and my son play along to that part! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have
Charlie Brown is classic. You'll love his simple style and humor and the kids will too.It reminds me of simpler times in life without all the clutter and business of today. There's no fighting, special powers, x-ray vision, etc.Just Charlie Brown and the gang learning about life and teaching important lessons along the way.
5-0 out of 5 stars Charlie's Holidays
These are the tv shows you remember. Not the bad - strike that - terrible holiday shows that the tv executives are giving us.The original is the best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Why no DVD of this fabulous film?
I keep looking for Alice to be released on DVD.I have given the VHS as a gift twice and still have a much watched copy for myself.Get out the kleenex for this wonderful story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great!
A friend mentioned this movie to me.I had never heard of it, but was glad to be able to find it at my library. After watching it and loving it, I was thrilled when I found a used VHS copy in a second hand shop. This is one of those movies that can be pulled out and watched at least every year.I first viewed it over the course of four evenings and each time, I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen with Jean and Joe.At the beginning of the movie, Jean is on the island of Malaya with her brother and a group of English workers. The Japanese overtake the island and cart off the men, apparently to a work camp. They force the women and children of the group to walk from place to place with accompanying soldiers. We see the woman at times afraid, at times bold, on the verge of giving up, yet determined to keep on.We see them sick, hungry and dirty. We watch some of them die. This is where the movie is the most engrossing. The characters are well developed and I almost felt as if I was marching right along with them.I came to love the character of Jean--she's smart and determined and also has a lot of compassion and a sense of humor. One of the best parts of the movie is when this rag tag group of women and children meet up with two Australian prisoners of war. There's an immediate attraction between Jean and one of the prisoners, Joe, and his energy infuses Jean with new life during the short time they are together. After the war, Jean inherits a large amount of money. She has never forgotten Joe and after much time and effort on both their parts, Joe and Jean get together again--this time in Australia.Jean uses her determination and smarts to develops some businesses, all the while wondering if she can make it on the outback.Joe loves Jean, but wonders himself whether or not he can ask her to live the life he loves.Their romance is appealing--they are both strong, independent people who have a passion for life and for each other. If you appreciate a long, thoughtful story with interesting and likeable characters, I would highly recommend this wonderful film.

Editorial Review

Once upon a time kids learned many of their school lessons in the three-minute episodes of Schoolhouse Rock. These educational cartoons came on during the commercial breaks of the less-than-edifying Saturday morning fare in the 1970s, and despite their healthy content, kids stayed glued to the screen to sing along to the somewhat psychedelic cartoons. Countless children hummed their way through social studies. The Preamble to the Constitution is much easier to remember when it's set to music. And everyone who saw the cartoon remembers how a bill becomes a law ("Oh, I'm just a bill, a lonely old bill, sitting here on Capitol Hill").These and eight other shorts make up Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous show!
This was a great show.I can't say anything better than the other reviewers, so I'll just say that this tape is a low-cost alternative to the DVDs that were released if you just want a little of the show for nostalgic purposes.

1-0 out of 5 stars Ambrose Bierce is a Better Authority
I have rented this video for the sake of a trip down Memory Lane. Of course, fourteen years produce a great shift in gullibility. I hated this video for its teaching of American ideology in perhaps the least open manner imaginable. For example, in

Well, i am here to say this is a fabulous tool! I watched all of these as a child and have shared them with my children. For those of you with the less than 5 star reviews let me say...This is not meant to be an exhaustive history lesson! It is a great way to introduce children to the history of our country. Something that, in my experience, schools made very boring. My children love history. If you find it not as accurate then be the one to take the next step and research it with your kids.I would agree it is geared toward younger kids but not that older kids would find it "stupid" at all! These reviews were pretty harsh. Also, the pilgrims DID plant food.Yes, the indians taught them everything and saved them but i wouldn't call that an inaccuracy. The movie just didn't get that deep into it.Come on now it is only a half hour! I highly recommend this to children of all ages.It opens the door to questions and conversations about our country that may not be raised otherwise. The music is very catchy and stays with you.It is plain and simple fun while being educational at the same time. Don't let the negative reviews sway you. This is a great video series and I highly recommend it!! ... Read more
