Editorial Review

This 1990 production has been getting good words on Web parentingmessage boards and for good reason: it works. Dr. Thomas Phelan, a clinicalpsychologist, developed the program for his own children when they were young and in the thralls of hyperactivity and sibling rivalry. The two-hour show features his explanation of the program interspersed with dramatic scenarios and parent testimonials. The corny vignettes and repetitivetestimonials are somewhat extraneous, but the nut of the information isinvaluable. Phelan urges parents to get away from explaining everything to kids, who aren't listening to you anyway, he says, but he's not a spanking advocateeither. His approach is rational and simple: counting and then time-out.You've done that, you say? Well, watch the tape and see what you're doingwrong. His method has been honed by parents and teachers who have come back to him with refinements. These include ways to encourage kids to start good behaviors once the bad behaviors are under control. Phelan is personable anddryly funny (think parents as wild-animal trainers), and the absence of a hard- sell tone makes watching this production a pleasant experience. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kid Cooperation WITHOUTScreaming or Threatening
My wife and I both work outside the home.Mornings were insane in our house especially getting our 3, 4 and 7 year olds to cooperate just so that we could all be out the door on time.So my wife ordered this highly recommended tape for both of us to watch.Suprisingly, I found it entertaining, informative and specific with things to try.The counting especially worked on our 4 year old. This video held my attention and I liked the fact that I could replay a part to see and hear the exact words to use with my child.Having the specific example portrayed with real live children and their parents clearly and quickly got the point across."The Pocket Parent" is also a very helpful comlimentary quick reference toddler owner's manual; it is written only for parents of 2's, 3's, 4's, & 5's. It offers alternatives to "time-outs" and hundreds of short bulleted suggestions for every challenging behavior you can think of like bad words, biting, bedtime refusals, sibling fights, lying, tantrums, power sruggles, and whining that can drive you close to your wit's end.We highly recommend this video along with the A-Z trouble-shooting pocketguide.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Parenting Video - full of humor and specifics !!!
I have a 2 1/2 year old son whom I put him in Preschool three weeks ago and I have been called in many times to the school because he was not listening to the teacher/aide.The Director of the school thinks that there is something wrong with his hearing and suggested we get it checked. She went as far as to suggesting us contacting the special needs school. It was a Godsend that this video arrived the same day of the meeting with the Preschool Director. That evening, my husband and I sat down and watched it together (dropped my son off at Grandma & Grandpa's).I thought that it may be one of those boring text book stuff. To my surprise, it was entertaining, organized, and full of real life examples and scenerio played out by actors.Dr. Phelan provides us with very specific way and technique as to how to deal with our son when he does not listen. Dr. Phelan teaches us when we should start counting, when to listen to reasons, and where to adminster time-out. We tried it on our sonthe very next day and it WORKs - really like Magic.I no long have to yell at him or physically redirect him. It is so much less exhausting and it didn't have to escalate to the point where both him and I were angry. It has been 3 days since, and I only have to count up to 2 - He actually LISTENED!!!I am so delighted and grateful for Dr. Phelan's video.I plan to bring the video to school this Monday and convince them to watch it.If they don't that tells me that they are not willing to work with us and it is not a good preschool and we shall file a complain and go elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars New Stress Reliever- 1-2-3Magic!
I'm a 34 year old, stay at home Mom, trying to raise a 6 year old daughter. She's a very demanding, stubborn, and mature child. I'm also raising a 16 year old with Down's Syndrome, and my husband is away alot with work. Before I saw the video of 1-2-3 Magic,I was at my wits end with my little tyrant, who was definitely running my home.Every supper time was horendous, getting out the door in the morning was the same. She was upsetting the whole family and I'd basically tried everything. She didn't like what was put before her for supper, and never finished it. Her focus was on dessert. Getting up for school and out the door in the morning was just as bad. She didn't have anything to wear and what she did have was stupid, according to her. I tried punishing her with the usual things like "time out",I yelled at her when my patience was gone,I took away her privileges, nothing worked. When I was asked to view this video 1-2-3 Magic,I was skepticle, but agreed anyway. After just a few minutes,I grabbed a pen and paper and started making notes. It was as if Dr.Phlen actually knew me and my child personally. That same day after watching the video,I waited patiently for my beloved 6 year old to come home, and I sat her down and explained briefly, the way things were going to be around here. I picked some things out of the video that was applicable to my child, and instantly started incorporating them. She was appalled that she had to start "paying me" for doing "her" chores, only if "she" refused to do them herself of course. She has also started making her bed before going to school in the morning, and getting better at the supper table. I would definitely incourage all parents to watch this video,it sure changed my family's life for the better. It was a relief! Thank-you Dr.Phelan for relieving some of my stress and enjoying my beloved 6 year old again. ... Read more

Steven Spielberg and George Lucas's 1981 resurrection of the Saturday-matinee adventure genre was deservedly popular, and kicked off a successful trilogy.Set in 1936, this first feature introduces Harrison Ford as Indiana Jones, an archaeologist and adventurer whose quests for rare antiquities frequently find him running from one menace or another. 5-0 out of 5 stars This movie is great!
This movie is an excellent film! Directed by Steven Spielberg and written by George Lucas and Lawrence Kasdan, this film is superior to most action films in history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Soft spot for this one
Amidst all the adventure, I consider this a sentimental favorite because it was one fo the first movies I can remember seeing with my future husband as a young girl. Nothing like a scary adventure movie for holding handsin a movie theatre. And it is a great movie. I think it is the best in the trilogy...but I hear another is coming.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Ford really delivers..."
Steven Spielberg directs this action-adventure, which has something in it for everybody.Action, adventure, and even a tiny bit of romance. The plot is simple-Hitler's men have discovered Tanice (not sure how its spelled), "one of the possible resting places of the Lost Ark."Indiana Jones, also known to his peers as "Indy", is hired to recover the Ark.The only problem is that Indy has to duke it out with some very nasty Nazis in order to successfully recover the ancient artifact. The Nazis are assisted by a French archaeologist named Beloch (not sure how that's spelled either) who can be considered Indy's archrival. If Jones is to succeed, he must use all his strength and wit to thwart his adversaries, whether they be gun-toting Nazis, sword-wielding Arabs or deadly snakes.Throw in a great (and I mean GREAT) musical score by John Williams, a charismatic hero (Harrison Ford really delivers in the role of Indy) and some pretty darn good special effects, and the result is a movie for the ages! This is one movie I can watch over and over and over and...well, you get the idea. Its non-stop action really packs a punch that is all too often missed in movies today; there is always something interesting going on in this movie.I own this film in the "pan-and-scan" format, which is considered by many to be the "poor" standard of viewing movies.Fortunately, this movie is so good that watching it in ANY format is a real treat!

Shot on location in numerous countries, this ambitious Wim Wendersfantasy takes Sam Neill, Solveig Dommartin, William Hurt, and a ragtag group in pursuit around the world and back again. Though set in 1999 under the shadow of impending disaster as a wobbly nuclear satellite threatens to Chernobyl the planet, the leisurely gait of their worldwide escapades has a distinctly '40s-era decadence. The ultimate object of their quest is a machine that records visual information from one person and reconstructs it in the brains of others--granting the miraculous power of sight to the blind for one thing, but even more mystically, enabling a person's dreams to be recorded. When the film seeks resolutions on the most intimate questions of the human soul which dovetail with the possibility of a destroyed world, the film is hampered by the VHS running time, which subtracts several hours from the laser disc version. But numerous joys, not least among them Jeanne Moreau and Max von Sydow as Hurt's parents, inhabit this thought-provoking film. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars an underappreciated classic
It is simply baffling that this film is not available on DVD.It is a classic and beautiful film...raising the bar for what other artist directors can aspire towards.Invest the effort to track this film down and be rewarding with a new, wider horizon in your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where's the DVD?
Seriously.I cannot believe that this movie isn't on DVD, yet! With all these people who were teens in the 80's now old enough to collect their favorite teen movies, you'd think the owners of these classic 80's teen movies would want to collect! Especially since one of the stars was recently on a reality show AND was an academy award winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars I agree about the songs..
I also loved the original end credit song "Let Your Love Flow" and have no clue why they changed it, my guess is , and this is only speculation, is that when the whole thing about Kristy McNichol "possibly being a lesbian" came around, I think that some may of taken that song out of context in thinking that with that song, it may of suggested "something" that might of happened with the girls after the thought, with the song speaking of "love" and all, I don't know, just my guess and thoughts.. who knows, BUT it was/is a great song to have in the end credits of that movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Put this out on DVD!!!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars very moving film
This movie is very inspiring."The Dawn Patrol," is very war related, as it takes place during the war and the patrol's of the flying aces dropping bombs and fighting the Germans.Errol Flynn is the very heroic flyer and loves his country and honors his duty in the service. It's really inspiring, especially his relationship between his good friend in the movie and in real life David Nivan they are true friends, their friendship is broken up for awhile by something Errol has to do it being his job and duty. It's a real moving film at the same time, inspiring, patriotic , truthful and sad.It shows what being in the air patrol during the war really was like a very true and relastic account of it. A very moving film.I think it was really well done, especially the flying scenes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Grim WW1 based anti-war flick
Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone and David Niven star in the sobering 1938 film "The Dawn Patrol" which undoubtedly served as the model for the WW2 classic "Twelve O'Clock High".They are all members of the 59th fighter squadron of the Royal Flying Corps based in France in 1915.A somber Basil Rathbone playing Major Brand is the squadron leader.Day after day he depressingly orders his pilots on dangerous missions which create a high mortality rate.Ace pilot Capt. Courtney played by Flynn and his able wingman Lt. Scott played by Niven continously marshal replacement pilots with little combat experience into the skies to face almost certain death.Flynn despises Rathbone for the missions of death he orders them on.

4-0 out of 5 stars High Road to China
This movie has stood the test of time...and my memory.Although I haven't seen it in years, I remember loving it.This film has everything from adventure to comedy & even romance. Both Tom Selleck & Bess Armstrong are wonderful in the movie; they are terrific actors! As always, Wilfred Brimley is a treat.
5-0 out of 5 stars High Road to China
After reading the many reviews, I almost decided to forego any further comment. The movie is excellent; well scripted, well cast, and has excellent cinemetography and editing. This is not Academy Award material; it was intended to entertain without trying to convey deep social issues and succeeds in every category. The on-screen interaction between Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong is outstanding and I had hoped they would be paired again. I especially enjoyed the flying sequences; without computer graphics the stunts and simulated combat scenes certainly kept my interest. The entire movie was fast paced, suited to any and every audience, and delivers thrills and laughter in equal measure. Where is the DVD??? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent video for back pain
After suffering with back pain for months and using doctor prescribed strong painkillers, I got very little relief and wasn't keen on continuing using painkillers long term. Gradually I started researching alternatives and read reviews for this video and bought it. I don't have enough good things to say about this video, it gave me relief within days, I don't have back pain anymore. Now I use this tape just for stretching after a long day at work. I like Rodney Yee's calming voice, he has a pleasant face and the background music is soothing too. After this yoga I feel relaxed and can sleep better, this is a great buy for those with lower back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Halloween Tradition
I first saw this movie when it originally aired on TV.After it was over, my sister and I trailed down the hallway of our house hanging on to my mother because we were so scared. We taped it a few years later and have watched it almost every year since on or around Halloween.I can honestly say that I would not watch it by myself because it still scares me so much.Movies today don't have the "scare factor" anymore - they go straight for the gore. This was so incredibly well acted.I can't look at Charles Durning the same way after seeing him as the lecherous postman."Bubba didn't do it" is one of my family's favorite catch phrases when someone is accused of doing something they didn't do.I just wish someone would put it on DVD so we could finally retire that old VHS tape with all the old commercials from 1980-something.This is a much-overlooked gem of a horror movie and I recommend it to anyone who really wants to be scared and not just grossed out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't Get Any Better Then This!
So who says you need a huge budget, a lot of computer generated special effects, and super big names to make an excellent horror film?
5-0 out of 5 stars Still one of my favorites after all these years.
I saw this movie when it aired years ago and thought it was great. It's very well written, directed and acted, with very little special effects, but it stands on it's own.Years later, I saw it coming on and recorded it only to lose it since.I've watched for it nearly every Halloween since but it never seems to air.I finally found a copy on ebay and bought it again. If you haven't seen it, I hope you get to.It's a real good story of revenge from the dark side, and it will keep you on the edge of your seat!Durning does such a good acting job in this movie, as well as his supporting cast.I can't wait to see it again! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Romantic comedy at its best!
This charming and enjoyable movie with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant is a must see.Julia, with her trademark charm and smile, is adorable in this film and Hugh Grant as the ackward but handsome bachelor, fall in love in Notting Hill. But before they do, a lot of amusing things happen to them. The cast is wonderful and absolutely funny. Not since "Four Weddings and a Funeral" have I seen such a great assemble cast and team.I wish Hugh Grant would make more movies like this again. In short, I highly recommend it to those who enjoy romantic comedies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quirky and cute but it works....
What happens when a Beverly Hills movie star walks into the quiet life of a Notting Hill bookseller? Sparks fly and it's one of those romantic comedies whereby you want to see them get passed the masks that are standing in the way. Vintage Roberts and Grant... and a surprise sweet British movie on the crazy ways people fall in and out and in and out of love.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just the bonus material

5-0 out of 5 stars Nearly 40 years old, now, the film still works...
You can even get a flash of Olivia Hussey's breast in the bedroom scene if you look closely, and she was only 15 at the time of filming, so this version of the ancient play was controversial in its day. It has passion, style, great supporting actors, and is true to its source as well. While the more recent version with Leonardo DiCaprio has some good moments, too, this one is the high water mark of "Romeo and Juliet" on film. I will never forget seeing this at the base theater at Fort Knox, Kentucky, after spending a month in Vietnam, facing almost another year in the Army. When the movie ended, one soldier in front of me said to his buddy, "They think they've got troubles? Try being in the damn Army!"Well, R and J did have life-ending troubles, but their falling in love, as instant as it was, achieves believability and really tugs at the hearts of the audience. This movie was a fine accomplishment, and its soundtrack album was also a big seller on LP in the late '60's. That Shakespeare fellow did his writin' before movies were invented, I think, yet his stuff adapts really well to the screen. For my taste, a Shakespeare movie almost always beats seeing his plays on stage.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Pinnacle Film Captures the Pure Essence of the Play
There have been many screen adaptations of Romeo and Juliet over the years. Some of them played by some of Hollywood's top actors and actresses. There was even the Romeo and Juliet last done by Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, which to my mind is simply Romeo and Juliet on steroids.
4-0 out of 5 stars Brings back my teen years in the theater.
First saw this movie as a 14 or 15 year-old teen.Loved the film!It is one of those seminal movie moments of my youth.I think it is the definitive film version of 'Romeo and Juliet.'Never saw DiCaprio's version and have no real desire to.The DVD was of excellent quality, considering the original film was shot in 1968. My teen daughter watched it with me, and did have some trouble following the Shakespearean dialog, but she could still follow the storyline. (I think we had more exposure to the classics in the Baby Boomer Gen than do kids today.) Nonetheless, we both enjoyed the experience and the DVD was delivered in Amazon's usual timely manner. The angry Prince's final words to the feuding families, "All are punish-ed. ALL ARE PUNISH-ED!" stands as an electric moment in the film. The performances by all are terrific.Enjoy! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars That's Fronkenstein...
I first saw this movie when I was 10 years old...yeah, I know...I was probably too young to see this movie but I really didn't get the "racy" parts until I was much older...like 10 1/2...
5-0 out of 5 stars This version is the one to buy....
If you have a widescreen TV, this is the version you must purchase. Unlike the previous "Special Edition" version, this new release is ANAMORPHIC widescreen, finally for the first time and it looks great on my new 32 inch Sony HDTV. The only downside is no sound upgrade, just MONO. The extras are the same as the previous edition. Anyway it is cheap and worth every penny for the new anamorphic transfer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hilarious Movie but...
I love Young Frankenstein. However, I was very disappointed when I realized that this re-release of it only had "mono" audio tracks. This is very disappointing because I would have loved to hear it in Dolby Surround. I am actually rather confused as to why they re-released it, because it has the exact same content as the previous DVD release... possibly a marketing ploy, I dunno.Let me also make clear that THE MOVIE IS A 5 STAR MOVIE BUT THE RE-RELEASE WAS THE REASON FOR THE 4 STAR RATING. Basicly, if you already have the "Special Edition" (earlier DVD release) you may as well save your money; they're exactly the same. However, if you have never seen this movie, I suggest you do yourself a favor and buy this movie. Definately won't disappoint fans of comedy. ... Read more

I've never seen this film, but I've seen clips of it!
5-0 out of 5 stars Lovely Adaptation of Maeterlinck's Classic Play
Curly Shirley Temple lends her dimpled, pouty-mouthed winsomeness to the tale of a young girl and her brother(Johnny Russell)who live in Austria/Bavaria during the Napoleanic Wars.
4-0 out of 5 stars wonderful movie
I have enjoyed this movie for many years. Yes Shirley plays a spoiled kid, and she doesn't sing or dance, but that does not take away from the beauty of the story. I would highly recommend this movie for kids and adults alike, of course adults with a child like heart will enjoy more. War breaks out daddy is drafted

Editorial Review

This gorgeous adaptation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic children's story is well worth watching with the whole family. Produced for Canadian television, it's one of those rare productions that actually sticks to the book and even enhances it through first-rate performances and an excellent script. Set on bucolic Prince Edward Island in the late 19th century, Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this movie today as much as I loved it when I was 10....
I saw this movie for the first time when I was something like 10 years old, and immediately fell in love with Anne Shirley. I have now read everything by L.M. Montgomery that I can get my hands on, and am as big a fan as ever. This movie is a beautiful version of a beautiful book.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Way things should be
"Anne of Green Gables" shows how a combination of love, honesty, hard work, tolerance and integrity is the perfect mix for bringing out the best from the potential in anyone, even in a non-traditional family. It's an incredibly refreshing break from today's society, where lying and manipulation have become almost a norm in much of the world we know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic
All the great reviews written previously say it all - Anne of Green Gables the movie is a timeless classic of the classic novel. I've been watching this movie since I've been a child, and I still watch it as an adult. A movie like this doesn't need "special features" for it to be attractive as a DVD(Although the commentary is great!). Just the fact that no matter how long I keep this and how often I watch this movie, it won't change like VHS does. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This movie brings the novel Jane Austen wrote to life brilliantly!
I have read Jane Austen's novel called "Pride and Prejudice" many times, and when I saw that a movie version of it would be on television, I didn't have much hope that it would be a faithful rendering of the book. But when I watched the movie on television, it matched Jane Austen's novel, word for word. It was a masterful production, and the actors chosen to portray the characters were perfect in the roles they played. I knew I had to own a copy of this beautiful movie! (I had seen a shorter movie of "Pride and Prejudice" on television, and it bore very little resemblence to the novel written by Jane Austen.) I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who loves novels written by Jane Austen.

5-0 out of 5 stars closest to the book
I loved this version, it was the closest to the book of all the versions i have seen, including the 2005 one.Jennifer Ehle also to me is the most authentic Elizabeth of them all, and I would say overall the rest of the cast match the books characters more closely, with maybe Mr. Bennet being a little more humorous in this version than the book.I'm not sure about fashions in that time period, but I have a feeling it was the most authentic as far as fashion goes. For example, I think most women at that time period and of that class level and agewould never be seen in public with their hair down, it would always be up, but in the 2005 version Elizabeth goes to Meryton out in public with her hair down. Also, it was the most authentic as far as language goes, in the 2005 version phrases/passages were changed for a modern audience to understand it better, but I prefer it spoken as it is in the book.Jennifer Ehle and Susannah Harker meet the maturity aspect of the women in the book as opposed to other versions where they are portrayed as mentally much younger and naive, and sometimes even giddy.I would have to say colin Firth is my favorite Darcy too, even though I had no problem with the guy in the 2005 version. I've also seen a 1980's version, and I think something from the 1970's, as well as the old 1940's version, so I've seen a few.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for Mr. Darcy
I have watched several versions of Pride and Prejudice, and loved them all.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somehow, I can never resist watching a broadcast of this one
I shall confess that this film is a 'guilty pleasure' for me as well. The story is unrealistic and melodramatic. Lana Turner's outdated, 'plastic' leading lady ways show that her acting abilities are on the lowest level of anyone except the 'cute and perky' Sandra Dee. Dialogue is dreadful, from the photographer's saying he'll have a 'love affair with Lora's bones' to Lora's telling Annie, whom she had known and shared a residence with for over a decade, that she never thought she had any friends.
5-0 out of 5 stars Love, Race, Mothers and Daughters
This movie is a classic.Although, I can barely stand to watch it.It takes me on an emotional rollercoaster ride.I bought it for my mother on Mother's Day.Growing up, she and I would watch it everytime it came on television.I wanted her to be able to see this tear-evoking memorable movie any time she pleases.Great Mother's Day gift.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CLASSIC film
