5-0 out of 5 stars Travelling Gypsies Both By DVD & CD
The Gypsies left their original homeland in northern India around 1000AD. This much has been established by historical and linguistic research, but the reason for their exodus westward is less certain. They reached Europe by the early C14th, crossing from Asia Minor by way of Crete and the Peloponnesus, and continued their dispersal westward and northward. By the end of the C14th they were already settled in large numbers in the Balkans and Danube lands, where an undeveloped economic structure and primitive technology gave Gypsy smiths and cobblers the chance to compete with local artisans. Early accounts of their arrival suggest that the curiosity and sympathy they originally aroused were accompanied by suspicion and hostlity, and soon their status changed dramatically from protected guests to persecuted outlaws. Within a 100 years of their first appearance, most countries in western Europe had passed savage laws for their expulsion: some even legislated to include the death penalty. 'Lacho Drom' is a wonderful travelogue of Rom music which traces this migration. The music and demeanour of the people says it all; languages that transcend regional barriers. Clearly, by Czechoslovakia, we have entered the Rom estate popularised by European literature's cliches, extolled by the excessive practice of all vices known to Man. The film's concluding lament caps an increasingly sad tale of persecution born, nevertheless, with brave equanimity. The appropriate footnote, if you can source it, is Joseph Koudelka's grave portfolio of Gypsies that was published by Aperture in the mid 1970s. I hestitate to trumpet aesthetics here, where it obviously hurts, but Koudelka's images are some of the most stunningly beautiful you'll ever see. There's nothing vouyeristic about Koudelka as in nearly every instance he's acknowledged by his subjects. And that implicit trust is rarely evinced anywhere, anytime, resulting in a candour that might well move you to tears.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and moving documentary!
This is one of my favorite documentary, still wish that they would release on DVD! I love the stories, and the beauty that it shows. It also is a great way to see the life style of Nomads from all over the world!

5-0 out of 5 stars Just about perfect in all respects...
Race and crime are the topics of this adaptation of Harper Lee's mega-selling novel. Set in the pre-World War II south, filmed in black and white, starring two child actors who were totally unknown and the wonderful Gregory Peck, the movie is really a tale of a single dad small-town lawyer raising a boy and a girl to do the right things and think the right thoughts. Famous for many things, the movie features a child character based on Truman Capote, and a mysterious neighbor played by Robert Duvall in his film debut. The music and cinematography are both superb. Everyone over the age of 12 should see this film at least once.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Cinematic Masterwork About Human Fallibility in a World of Wearying Intolerance
Having just read Charles Shields' biography of Harper Lee, "Mockingbird", and re-read her classic (and only) novel for at least the third time, I was able recently to watch Robert Mulligan's 1962 classic film adaptation with fresh eyes, and the 2005 Legacy Series Edition DVD fortunately contains a pristine print transfer and a bundle of extras that make repeated viewings more than worthwhile. Rarely has a film so accurately captured the emotional consequences of human fallibility steadfastly within the grip of racial intolerance. Set in the Deep South of Lee's childhood in the fictional town of Maycomb in 1932, the story, adapted by writer Horton Foote, focuses on six-year old Scout, the tomboy, motherless daughter of lawyer Atticus Finch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Review of DVD To Kill a Mockingbird
The Legacy Series Edition of To Kill a Mockingbird is an excellent DVD set.In addition to the classic movie (which we never tire of), the special features are very interesting, including interviews with "Scout" (Mary Badham), and "Atticus Finch".It is easy to understand why Gregory Peck is so revered and respected as an actor.

edna ferber was never able to transfer very well from page to screen (see "ice palace", "so big", "cimarron", either "show boat"), but the movies all were entertaining.this george stevens production stars rock hudson, liz taylor, and james dean in the saga of competing texas billionaires.its a sprawling mess but individual moments (to be truthful, mostly from dean) are so good as to make it always worth a viewing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Giant acting, current issues.
The actors are all superb in this extraordinary film about the issue of bigotry with regard to Mexican-Americans, women and the poor. There is not even a hint of melodrama in the portrayals of either the villains or the heroes, making it a film that I never tire of watching. The issue of bigotry is just as relevant today as it was in 1956 when the movie was made and in 1952 when the book was published.James Dean reveals his true range of acting ability in his portrayal of Jett Rink from a poor and rebellious young kid to a middle-aged oil tycoon.Rock Hudson's portrayal of a rich Texas patriarch is quite realistic, despite the overly romantic roles he usually played.Elizabeth Taylor, too, is convincing as a young woman from a family of privilege in Maryland adjusting to life in the modern west without sacrificing any of the values she had acquired while growing up.Everyone in this film does not appear to be "acting." They all seem true-to-life, making this film a joy to see many times without tiring of the lessons about bigotry.

5-0 out of 5 stars George Stevens' Oscar winner
It's very easy to forget that this wonderful, entertaining, and nostalgic epic film won George Stevens an Oscar. As the special features included in the set indicate, Stevens was a very special director who enjoyed a long, productive, and rewarding career.Prior to World War II, Stevens directed mostly comedies and did quite well, particularly when he worked with Hepburn and Tracy on "Woman of the Year."Wartime service, where he produced a number of special films using Kodachrome film, changed Stevens greatly, especially when he saw the atrocities in the German concentration camps.

When the king appoints his former drinking buddy to the high religious office, he believes he has placed an ally into power. Instead, he learns that Thomas very much takes his job to heart, prompting Henry to ask that fateful question--"Will no one rid me of this meddlesome priest?" Read more

I just don't understand why this gem of a movie hasn't yet been released on DVD. I am a teacher of English Literature in a college in Bangalore, India, and when I talk to my students about the European Middle Ages, I strongly recommend this film. I tell them that they cannot get a better introduction to the great issues of that era than what this superb film gives them.

    Editorial Review

The three-day Woodstock music festival in 1969 was the pivotal event of the 1960s peace movement, and this landmark concert film is the definitive record of that milestone of rock & roll history. It's more than a chronicle of the hippie movement, however; this is a film of genuine historical and social importance, capturing the spirit of America in transition, when the Vietnam War was at its peak and antiwar protest was fully expressed through the liberating music of the time. With a brilliant crew at his disposal (including a young editor named Martin Scorsese), director Michael Wadleigh worked with over 300 hours of footage to create his original 225-minute director's cut, which was cut by 40 minutes for the film's release in 1970. Eight previously edited segments were restored in 1994, and the original director's cut of Woodstock is now the version most commonly available on videotape and DVD. Read more

    Excellent - arrived on time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good stuff
When reviews of music DVD's are all over the board regarding sound quality only one fair conclusion is possible: The problem is the end user, not the product. I was stunned by how good this DVD sounded. Consider the conditions under which Woodstock was recorded and the quality and calibration of your home system before jumping to negative conclusions about this "transfer". That the VHS version sounds better than the Dolby 5.1 mix on DVD is simply not possible. You can quibble about several aspects of this movie but sound quality should not be one of them. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a very good film, and prescient
I first saw 'la haine' about a year ago in a french class. then, this past autumn, as we all know, riots broke out in the ethnic outskirts of a number of major french cities. it's been 9 years since the film came out, and unlike some of its american urban film counterparts (spike lee excluded, of course) it is somehow prescient, getting better with age. anyone can throw around a buzzword like "urban alienation", but only a film like 'la haine' can truly convey it.

I've seen this movie several times, and it just never gets old. Although Kassovitz claims Hate is not meant to be a documentary or make any political points, the message is glaring and heart-rending.

The lingering impression of "Danton" is one of almost unbearably bright light, whiteness and dust swirling in rays of cold sunlight. When I want to cite an example of history brought to real, physical, wrinkled, dusty, sweaty life, I refer to "Danton".
5-0 out of 5 stars A Lesson In Movie Making
It is a really fantastic movie. One of Wajda's best and one of Depardieu's best. The movie is set in post-Revolution France, in which two groups, one headed by Danton (Depardieu) and one by Robespierre (Wodjciech Pszoniak) who also give a great performance.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spanish vacation
Having spent my recent vacation in Spain, and having attended a flamengo dance performance in Sevilla (without bringing a recorder)I was glad finding this DVD. The music is of course highly authentic and I much enjoyed it. After a while though it becomes "all of the same thing" and starts to bore you. I ejected this DVD after 45 minutes or so. Nevertheless I do recommend purchasing it especially if you want to have an immediately accessable " souvenir" of your visit to Spain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rare opportunity to see the greats!
While this performance is choreographed, hence not 100% authentic Canté Gitano, this is a very rare opportunity to see many of the great people of flamenco in one place. Carlos Saura has brought together people of the likes of Moraito Chico, Fernanda de Utrera, Manolo Sanlúcar, Manuel Agujetas, Paco del Gastor, Chocolate, Farruco, Farruquito, Tomasa la Macanita, Tomatito, etc, etc!

I have been going to the movies for a long, long time...starting in the late 1930's.'King of Hearts' is very near the top of my list of favorites and I was delighted to be able to obtain my very own copy. The premise asks the question, 'Who is Really Crazy? The gentle souls confined to an insane asylum or the warmongers on the battlefield?'Though the actions of the actors is comedic and amusing, this can hardly be defined as a comedy. It causes one to think a great deal about a very serious subject.

I have learned from previous reviews that the movie has an antiwar message. When I watched the movie, my attention was held by its humor and entertainment.I was introduced to the film by a rental, and decided to buy it to replay when I was looking for a good laugh. ... Read more

William Holden is the hunky drifter who rides the rails into a small Midwest town with dreams of landing a "respectable" job with his rich college buddy (Cliff Robertson). Kim Novak is the small-town beauty queen engaged to Robertson who falls for the cocky dreamer, as do repressed schoolmarm spinster Rosalind Russell and Novak's tomboyish kid sister Susan Strasberg. Their unleashed passions reach a crescendo at the Labor Day picnic. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Picnic
Enjoyable, but not nearly as much as when I saw it in 1955.Then I fell in love with Kim Novak and admired William Holden.Of course I was 15 YO old then.In other words, the movie made me feel old.Kim Novak was not as pretty as I remebered and William Holden was a little corny (however, I think that he was supposed to be).I'll watch it again sometime when I am in a good mood! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars wheels within wheels
The haunting soundtrack of this 1962 film presentation of one of the twentieth century's most ambiguous heroes is not the only thing that leaves one wondering how such artistry could flourish among the certainties of that historical moment.
5-0 out of 5 stars And not just the character study of a fascinating person
As much as I agree with the reviews that point to the wonderful balance of spectacle and intimate biography, I've recently discovered something else about this film: running deeply - though quite subtly - throughout it is the insightful story of how the Middle East became what it is today. The scenes between Jack Hawkins and Claude Rains (and, later, Alec Guinness) show how the English and the French carved up the area for their own interests, with the complicity of the most powerful of the tribal/social leaders (e.g., Guinness, as Prince Feisal). I should emphasize the word subtle, because David Lean was far too good a filmmaker to create a solely political film. But he was also too good a filmmaker to take socio-political subtleties off his palette. If you haven't seen this movie in 10 years or so, take a look again. You'll be amazed at what you didn't rate as important the last time you watched - and you'll appreciate the fact that the film is laden with even more than you remember.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lies v. Truth
There is a truism that if a person is caught lying on some matter then that person cannot be believed on other things. This is also true of films.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still My Favorite
The film initiates with two small-time thieves, Honey Bunny and Pumpkin, who spontaneously decide to hold up a restaurant. The film then shifts to the story of Jules and Vincent, who are hitmen for the well-known and feared Marsellus Wallace, who is caught up in a deal gone wrong with struggling boxer Butch Coolidge.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, everything about it.
Yes a bit strange but I loved this movie! My boyfriend and my mom recommended Pulp Fiction to me and now I recommend it to you!I loved how it all fit together but was in like 5 different chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Film And Terrific Writing!
"Pulp Fiction is not an overrated film, in fact it is an outstanding film. There are quite a few reviews here, therefore, I will be short. Having seen 'Resevoir Dogs' and liking it very much, I was really impressed with Tarantino's follow-up of "Pulp Fiction."One of the things I really liked about this film, to name just one, was the different offbeat characters that Tarantino put into the film. From John Travolta, [as Vinny the nutcase with a penchant for killing] to Samuel L. Jackson, as Travolta's stone cold killer partner; these two characters alone made the film terrific.

4-0 out of 5 stars Confused?
I watched this film on the Independent Film Channel maybe 10 years ago. My recollection of it is that it is an excellent film. I came here to purchase this film and "Rabbit-Proof Fence" (also excellent) on dvd. I read various reviews rated from 5 to 1 stars and am now wondering if this film on dvd is the same one I watched so long ago. Has it been reformated? Have scenes been deleated or added? I read that some ppl who recalled it as an excellent film were somewhat disappointed after the passage of time. Is this due to a change in the format of the film? I recall the storyline and Australian scenery as awesome. Can someone tell me if the dvd release has changed the film, somewhat like the changes made to the dvd of "Amadeus"? (glad I recorded that movie on vhs!)Thanks...

5-0 out of 5 stars Highways of Happiness
Walkabout is a truly exceptional film. If possible seeing this on a theatre screen or at least a large plasma is ideal, as the heart of it is the awesome imagery of Australia's "Outback."
5-0 out of 5 stars Ab Original
This really fine film deals with itself on its own terms and does not try to answer all of its own questions. For example -- the death and position of the native boy in the tree reflects the way the father ended at the beginning and suggests the same sexual passion for the girl -- which explains her attitude toward her Dad and perhaps his immolation. Some innocent nudity toward the end.Well worth it. ... Three days in the summer of 1863, at a place called Gettysburg. Although it received a theatrical release, this four-hour depiction of the bloody Civil War battle was shot as a made-for-television film. But no taint of cheapness or shortcuts should stick to this magnificent picture (well, except maybe for those phony-looking mustaches). Based on Michael Shaara's book Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars No Doubt It's Great
There is no questioning this film is done very well. That said, it should be pointed out that it may not be for everyone. If you are not a fan of cliches, stay away from this. There are TONS of monologues that go on for long periods of time with epic music in the background, and maybe not everyone can handle that. Most of the performances are incredible, my favorite happens to be Jeff Daniels. One performance that doesn't do it for me is Martin Sheen. He shares a lot of scenes with Tom Berenger and it seems like Berenger is the one keeping those scenes afloat. C. Thomas Howell has a steady part but you won't recognize him as the kid from the Outsiders. Great battle scenes, especially the big one in the open field at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars We do what we must do.
After the heart-rending nobility of Abraham Lincoln's verbal tribute to Gettysburg's fallen, there is not much else that could do those men justice.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Before I give my review I would like to say that everyone who says that Martin Sheen is a bad R.E Lee, or that the movie is inaccurate, or that the movie is too accurate and gives to many stupid details, or that the movie moves to slowly, is a dumb idiot who cares more about hollywood depictions of the Civil War than true depictions. The movie is positivly lovely to watch.

4-0 out of 5 stars SLAPSTICK HORROR: A FUN WATCH
For those who have never seen the film, it is a b-grade horror flick that deviates from many in the horror genre. First of all, it is not meant to be taken seriously, as Sam Raimi puts a lot of comical twists into this film. Also, while the film is listed as "EVIL DEAD II," it is in fact a remake and much better upgrade of the first "Evil Dead" film. There is a lot of gore in this film to be sure [b-grade style] however, there are plenty of gags and laughter also.
4-0 out of 5 stars Evil Dead Rocks
Classic horror film sequel/remake.Did not realize that this was basically a "do-over" of the first Evil Dead.Extras were interesting and normally I pass over them. Now I MUST see Army of Darkness to see how it all ends!

5-0 out of 5 stars Today's scary movies aren't this good
Did I say scary? Yeah, this movie is a little scary, not too much though. But it's more frightening than most of today's "scary" movies. It's also much more enjoyable.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Guess There's Something "Wrong" With Me
I guess there must be something profoundly wrong with me, because I rather liked "Maniac".Sure, I'll concede that its definately not for everyone, but what is?As the old cliche goes, one man's trash is another man's treasure. So, what did I like about Maniac?
1-0 out of 5 stars there is something wrong with you if you enjoy this!
This is a horrible movie with no redeeming value. I realize that such a knock will actually drive people to purchase this. Let me bring something to you attention.
5-0 out of 5 stars A True Hidden Treasure
Wow! I watched it for my first time today and I have to say that this movie was really something to see. It really has the power to make you feel sorry for the "Maniac" in the film. His childhood was very similar to Norman Bates' life. Great acting by the actor who played Frank. As I said before, by the end of the film, you really have feelings for the killer. Tom Savini has come through once again with some really cool special effects. He truly is the master of horror gore. But that's the thing about this movie, there wasn't really that much gore. None was needed to tell this really surprisingly terrific story. And no nudity, they didn't take the cheap way out by having a lot of nudes. Overall, this mpvie is really worth seeing by every horror fan. Great work and deserves all the praise it gets! ... Read more
