4-0 out of 5 stars This Is So Bad It's Gone Past Good And Back To Bad Again.
Grossing not much less than its $7 budget, Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World nevertheless has gotten commendable critical praise and a cult following since its 2001 release. Daniel Clowes, author of the graphic novel the film is adapted from, even collected an Oscar nomination for his and Zwigoff's screenplay.
4-0 out of 5 stars Overhyped, but still good.
I had mixed feelings when I watched this movie. I loved it because no other movie had every portrayed the lifestyle of the outsiders so accurately. This was how I felt in high school. Stand back and feel good about making barbed sarcastic remarks on all the normal people, it makes you feel superior, and at the same time, utterly depressed. This movie broke my heart into little pieces. Also the humor was fantastic, I LOVED the scenes in the art class which made fun of the hokey concept of high art.

I looooooove this movie. its so interesting and quirky and weird. i have no idea why it didn't go to the box office, but that probably would have made it lame. it kinda feels like i found this awesome movie that not many people haven't seen, but that everyone should see.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disturbing, tragic, depressing -- and singularly fascinating
I really don't know what to make of this film. When you first start watching Crumb, you wonder why anyone would ever want to watch something this odd, but after about twenty minutes you realize that you couldn't stop watching it if you wanted to - and you don't want to.The world of Robert Crumb, a pioneer in the world of underground comics, is as disturbing as it is fascinating - and that is exactly what Crumb is, a documentary about the life of this man and his family. It gives you a disarmingly honest look inside the man's mind, and I'm not sure anyone can really describe what we discover. In all honesty, I had never heard of Robert Crumb nor seen any of his work (although Fritz the Cat does ring a bell) before - that work is eye-opening to say the least, and you get to see a lot of it during the documentary.Much of it is misogynistic and arguably racist, so I'm sure Crumb fans and anti-fans alike will be most interested in this artist's direct insight into his work.Crumb is a compulsive artist who draws almost constantly, and one gets the sense that it is the only thing keeping him from crossing a line into madness.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Rare Portrait of Mental Illness.
Although with this statement I am not referring to the principal subject of the documentary. Robert Crumb is a man who exhibits the ability to work and love so one would have to say, despite his prevalent eccentricities, he is a functional adult. The same cannot be said about his two brothers who are extensively interviewed here. They would not seem to have been an obvious choice as Crumb does not have a great deal to do with his family anymore. Both of his brothers are deeply depressed and mentally ill. They are a sad sight to see. Crumb's mother is also in bad shape and it is implied that she doesn't like to leave the house for any reason. Hyper-sexuality seems to be a trait running through their family as one brother fantasized about molesting boys while the other was actually arrested for molesting women. The Crumb family is at times repulsive but do offer up exceptional insight into the ways of the imbalanced.
4-0 out of 5 stars Unpolished, yet entertaining and compelling.
As a graphic designer and sometimes-comic artist, I have always been drawn to R. Crumb's work. Although many find R's art for the most part obscene or bigoted, I am quite drawn to his work and try to look at some of his more controversial pieces in the context of social, political and personal conditions. This documentary has certainly helped to further my understanding of 'R' the person, and should not be missed by those wanting to learn more about the man behind the art.

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY DIRECTOR'S CUT!
Don't buy the directors cut.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Santa is bad.
I rented this movie after hearing how funny it was.Unfortunately, instead of laughing it just made me sad and angry. The way the boy was treated was nothing short of child abuse.I have a sick enough sense of humor that I like a lot of dark comedies, but this movie was just plain mean-spirited.If they had left out the boy altogether is might have been funny.

5-0 out of 5 stars An obscure gem...
This is an early documentary by director Terry Zwigoff ("Crumb", "Ghost World") that focuses on an old time music/blues player named William Howard Armstrong.Armstrong was 75 at the time this film was shot, but he was still capable of some blistering playing. We get to see him play the fiddle, the guitar, the banjo, the ukelele, and some hybrid instruments. He appears with the players he has been with for years and years.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Smart Little Film That Gets Caught Up In Its Own Mess Of A Story
ART SCHOOL CONFIDENTIAL is yet another comic book comes to celluloid life, this time by writer Daniel Clowes, and in the process creates more subplots than it can comfortably handle. The main premise - that art schools are peopled by assorted types of students all with the goal of becoming a great artist and the manner in which attrition occurs - is a solid one and an entertaining tale to tell.Cluttering that main line of story with a silly stalking strangler idea is just plain dumb and accomplishes little except giving an easy out for a finish.
1-0 out of 5 stars Daniel Clowes and Terry Zwigoff need to get out more
How to begin this movie review? Well, the tone of the movie is set with a lecture from an art star in a state art college where he proves that all successful artists are a-holes who don't owe anyone anything and who have nothing to offer. From here on, everyone is pretty much as the art star describes: washed-up professors jumping at any chance to exhibit, moody women who lash out at men, kids who just want to get laid, bulls--tters. Oh, and our 'protagonist' (I usually need a fair amount of character development to apply this label, but hey I'm not Terry Zwigoff) who is an innocent in this sea of cynicism complete with doe-eyed looks and ability to draw like a master. We're actually supposed to have an 'epiphany' moment in the film as he draws a beautiful female model that is complete with slow camera movements and disolves and string quartet music. Give me a break.Oh, and there is some lame subplot about a murderer or something too.
5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting original film,Art about art
This is an intersting Dark Comedy about a suburban kid, Jerome, who always dreamed of being a great artist like Picasso. Well, he finally gets his shot to go to college, he chooses a school for arts, based on a picture of a model seen in their brochure. He hopes as any young man does that he could some day meet her, and perhaps impress her, in this case, with his art.Well, he gets his chance. But the red sea does not part like he expects it, in his way are his classmates who are critical of his work or do not notice, and the arrival of one perticular student, Jona, interupts his plans with his dream girl, who we now know as Audrey. Along the way he is befriended by a classmate, Bardo, who has dropped out several times, but can characterize and label people better than anyone, as well as introduces him to a person who could be a model of him in the future, but not a good picture. The movie takes off from their, and they kept the outcome pretty well wrapped up until late.Entertaining, fresh. If you like darker comedies, this is a must see. ...
