Editorial Review

A pampered socialite (Goldie Hawn) is so distraught after the wedding-night death of her husband (Albert Brooks) that she up and joins the Army. She whines, she pouts, she brings the corps down, until, of course, she gets with it. Eileen Brennan received a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her role as the butch Captain Doreen Lewis, Benjamin's nemesis. Funny and winning, the film takes an odd turn when Benjamin is assigned to the international theater and gets involved with a dour Frenchman (Armand Assante). Of course, it's all part of Benjamin's growth as a person, and the part confirmed that Hawn had gone from a go-go girl to a "you go" girl. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Overrated, but still entertaining
Goldie Hawn gives an astounding performance as Judy Benjamin, a spoiled rich girl whose second husband just died six hours into their marriage. Not knowing where to go from there, she calls a radio call-in show to get advice from people. In the end, she meets an army recruiter who tells her to enlist.Judy does so, but only because the recruiter glamorizes the lifestyle to the point that he flat out lies. When she gets there, she gets a rude awakening.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of Goldie Hawn's Best Comedies
Goldie Hawn has long had a knack for comedy."Private Benjamin" is one of her best comedies. The "Jewish Princess" persona wears a little thin in a few places, but most of the time the comedy works well.
5-0 out of 5 stars "...but I joined a 'different' army."
Goldie Hawn is just perfect as Judy Benjamin, a young woman who is torn to pieces after the death of her husband just six hours after saying their vows.Yes her husband dies right in the middle of making love to her. That's enough to make anyone a little nuts. While in this state of anxiety she calls up a local radio station under the persona of Jessica and laments about her situation. While the radio receives dozens of callers wanting to give their advice, it's one in particular that gets Judy thinking, and with a little persuasion she up and joins the army under the false impression that she'll have her own condo and, if things prove too hard for her, she can just up and quit whenever she wants.Little does she know, upon arriving at her base, she'll be bunked with quite a few other women (some of which are hardened criminals) and there will be no quitting for three years.

A doomed Macaulay Culkin becomes the object of affection for a little girl (Anna Chlumsky), estranged from her widowed father (Dan Aykroyd). This somewhat daring premise has various emotional buffers to keep young viewers from going into shock from Culkin's demise, but the film is also not shut off from real feelings. And while the story remains safely predictable, at the end of the day it is still a bittersweet experience. Culkin's performance is okay in that somewhat mannered way of his post-Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Heart-Warming Tear-Jerker Of A Movie. Anna Chulumsky Is Terrific. Recommended For Girls Only.
I caught this wonderful movie on TV (and was able to see all of it) after only seeing snippets of it, which I liked. I admit, I'm a real sucker for these movies (my best friend knows me best-thank God for her; that's how I can relate to this tear-jerker). I cried at the end of this movie. SPOILER AHEAD!!! My favorite scene is when Vada (Anna Chlumsky, in a heart-breaking performance) cries over Thomas J.'s (Mac. Culkin) coffin. God, that scene literally ripped me in two. Jamie Lee Curtis (daughter of the late Janet Leigh (from "Psycho" fame) and Tony Curtis ("Spartacus," "The Great Race")) and Dan Akroyd ("Pearl Harbor") are well-cast as a wandering woman whom Vada initially resents for trying to marry her overworking father to escape from her past experiences in life, but then comes to love at the end, and her dad, who works as an undertaker. I recommend this movie to girls for a Girls Night Out (or sleepover, etc). Rated PG for some thematic elements and mild language.
5-0 out of 5 stars Confused About Death
I remember when "My Girl" came out in cinemas. I was in third grade, I was at a new school, and it was the start of a new term. First thing we had to do is get into partners and tell the other person what you'd done over the holidays. I still hadn't made any proper friends yet, so no one really wanted to be my partner. I told the teacher, and he told off the class for not being very friendly. That was embarrassing, but it got me a partner. And what had I done over the holidays? I'd gone and seen "My Girl", so I talked about that...

Editorial Review

Movies about the movies are a particularly rich vein, especially in comedies. No one understands just how ridiculous Hollywood is like the people who work there. This film is an affectionate behind-the-scenes story about a bumpkin (Jeff Bridges) who moves to Hollywood in the 1930s with visions of a career penning the kind of Westerns he loves to watch, especially the ones starring his favorite Western star (Andy Griffith). Instead, through a series of mishaps, he becomes an actor himself--and a pretty bad one at that--starring in B Westerns (and becoming a rival to Griffith, who turns out to be a particularly nasty piece of work, in a bit of casting against type). Alan Arkin and Blythe Danner join in the fun in this good-natured and amusing spoof. Read more

I only saw some of this movie but i think it is very funny. Jeff bridges can act very good. and andy griffith plays a very good meanie. i remeber the last scent when griffith saves the day. i think it is funny movie

5-0 out of 5 stars Genuinely sweet, genuinely funny, and urbane cowpokes too
This film is full of scoundrels and opportunists and still manages to make life seem delicious. Long before Gwenyth Paltrow was famous her mother, Blythe Danner, was known by aficionados as someone that picked superb material. She's here as The Girl, savvy but still sweet enough to fall for the truly endearing and monumentally naive Jeff Bridges.Alan Arkin does a sublime high strung director of 1920s cowboy movies, and you won't believe what Andy Griffith can do.See it and feel great not in a sappy way:a truly grown up delight. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Insanely funny movie, a true classic
One of the movies I remember seing in the theater back in 1989, just a great comedy then, and even better now that I have it on DVD.This is a movie about a Group of 4 men that are inpatients at a state hospital that are in the same therapy group.Their young doctor has been trying to blaze a new trail in their treatment, stopping all of their drugs and doing strickly therapy.Unfortunatly, its been going slow. As a booster, he has plans to take the group to a Yankees Game on a supervised pass. And yes, they get aproval. Unfortunately, the plan didn't go as expected. The Doctor disappears while taking his patient to find a restroom. Unfortunatley, the patient is a semi-cataonic schizophrenic that only speaks as a TV brodcast or in baseball terms. He is the only witness to where the doctor went.So we are left with 4 psych patient in the big city, and no supervision. Well, I don't want to wreck the movie if you haven't seen it, although this was a staple of TBS, WGN and other cable channels, but let say that they stuggle through many different challenges, including police conspiracy and murder charges and some how come out clean. They all even get to face their past demons and gain theraputic insight as well.A classic movie, and a unique one as well. Highly recommend this movie.

I watched this movie yeas ago, then I watched it yesterday. It's funnier, now that I'm a little older and my tastes have changed some.

"My Girl 2" continues the story of Vada Sultenfuss and her family, set two or so years on from the original. It's a pretty good sequel, I thought.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE I WATCHED IT WITH MY COUSINS I LOOOVE AUSTIN O'BRIEN

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Sequel...But could have found a better Nick
I rented "My Girl 2" after watching "My Girl" and I really enjoyed it. I liked how they got all of the same characters from the first movie, instead of getting all new actors and actresses, because I really hate when sequels are like that. Of course, they had to get a new boy for Vada to get to know since Thomas J. died in the first one, but for goodness sakes.....GET A BETTER NICK! AUSTIN O` BRIEN WAS NOT A GOOD ACTOR IN THIS MOVIE AT ALL! MACALUAY CULKIN WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN HE WAS. HIS HAIR WAS EXTREMELY TOO LONG, HIS MAKE-UP LOOKED TERRIBLE WHEN HE WAS ABOUT TO KISS VADA, AND HE JUST...WAS NOT A GOOD ACTOR! THERE ARE PLENTY OF BETTER YOUNG ACTORS OUT THERE THAT I WOULD HAVE CHOSEN OVER AUSTIN O` BRIEN. HE IS JUST NOT THE TYPE OF PERSON THAT I WOULD HAVE PICKED FOR THE PART OF NICK. Other than that, I really enjoyed it.. it was a sweet movie full of laughter, happiness, romance among Vada and Nick at the end of the movie and both of them getting to be cousins and I also liked how Vada finally got to know some more information about her mother. I also liked how this movie was not as sad as the first one. Overall, I would definetely recommend at least renting this movie if not going ahead and buying it. ... Read more

This remake of Preston Sturges's 1948 comedy follows the same plot but doesn't produce nearly as many laughs, though it does have its amusing moments. Dudley Moore is a famous orchestra conductor who is convinced that his wife (Nastassja Kinski) is having an affair with his best friend, a flamboyant violinist (Armand Assante). So he plots an elaborate scheme by which he will kill them both and get away with murder. That fantasy, which he has while conducting an orchestra, rapidly falls apart once he actually tries to put it into motion. Moore and Assante compete for overacting awards, while Kinski was never much of an actress to begin with. Still, this was one of Moore's better roles during his brief bout with stardom in the '80s, and any movie with Albert Brooks (as Moore's venal manager) in it can't be all bad. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Green Eyed Monster Runs Amuck
Dudley Moore plays a famous conductor recently wed to a young and beautiful European actress played by Nastassja Kinski. It is a good relationship and the couple loves each other until a misunderstanding leads to suspicion on Moore's part. He comes to believe his beautiful child bride is playing around. Worse, he thinks she is playing around with his prot?g?, a notorious womanizer. Its untrue but coincidences mount up to reinforce the idea until he is blind with rage and plots both of their murders.
4-0 out of 5 stars star-studded remake of a Hollywood classic
Well-directed, slick remake of the Preston Sturges comedy classic, with Dudley Moore offering a fantastic performance as a neurotic orchestra conductor who suspects his beautiful younger wife of having an affair with a handsome violin virtuoso, then plots their demise.Natassja Kinski plays the wife, looks ravishing if anything else, and has a charming comedy presence.Armand Assante plays the suspected `Other Man', with Albert Brooks and Cassie Yates.
4-0 out of 5 stars One of Dudley Moore's best
This movie is so fitting of Moore [He plays an orchestra conductor.] since he was an accomplished musician himself. It's roll-on-the-floor humour when the conductor's fantasy goes awry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Streisand
I have been a fan of Barbra Streisand it seems like forever. My aunt Dee Knuckles who had the only womans boxing team in San Pedro, CA. was the boxing consultant for Barbra in the Fabulously Funny "The Main Event". I can remember going with my aunt to see Barbra and Ryan at the Auditorium in LA, seems like just yesterday. The major highlight of this film is when Barbra sings "The Main Event" absolutely takes your breath away. This movie is fabulous. Way to go Barbra.

4-0 out of 5 stars Much better than it's reputation
This film was a major hit upon release in the summer of `79.With a budget seven-million-dollars, the film took in over $40 million at the domestic box office and became one of the top-ten grossers of the year.Unfortunately, it has since been written off by many fans and critics alike as one of Streisand's weakest film efforts. As for myself, I believe THE MAIN EVENT manages to be likable, funny, and entertaining.Even though we've seen the same story a thousand times before, THE MAIN EVENT is very enjoyable while it's playing.
2-0 out of 5 stars What's good about this movie?
That's a hard one to answer. I did smile once or twice, but even Barbra's most ardent fans will struggle to like this lame effort. The trouble is that there's nothing clever about it. So anybody who likes 'What's Up, Doc?' and thinks, Great, another Streisand/O'Neal movie I will enjoy, well, think again. Ryan O'Neal tries to be cute, but it looks like it's hard for him. Barbra's character is confusing: she starts as a high-powered business woman, but later in the film slips into 'vulnerable silly woman' character half the time. What's going on?

4-0 out of 5 stars Light Tracy-Hepburn-Style Romp Takes Well-Aimed Jabs at Greedy Doctors
I remember seeing this 1978 comedy at one of the bargain matinees I took in when I was looking for a study break from my college courses. Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson do some effective Tracy-Hepburn-style thrusting-and-parrying in this featherweight romp directed by the reliable Howard Zieff (he did "Private Benjamin") about a newly widowed doctor's aggressive re-entry into the dating game. It all breezes by quickly primarily thanks to the clever script by veteran screenwriter Julius J. Epstein ("Casablanca") along with Alan Mandel, Max Shulman and future director Charles Shyer.
4-0 out of 5 stars Lighter Than Air, and What's Wrong With That?
In a career that featured a wealth of great comic performances, Walter Matthau gave few that were more delightful and relaxed than this one. In contrast to the wonderfully over-the-top style he displayed while winning an Oscar for "The Fortune Cookie" and being nominated for another in "The Sunshine Boys," Matthau employed a lighter but equally effective comic touch for this 1978 romantic comedy. He plays a widowed doctor who is over his grief and ready to sow some wild oats, only to find that he's fallen for a woman who wants nothing to do with his playboy ways. Glenda Jackson, who later left acting to join the British parliament, is a perfect match for Matthau's game, and the two trade barbs beautifully in a film that plays so leisurely that it's over before you know it. Look for superb supporting performances from Richard Benjamin as well as Art Carney as the dottering and caustic hospital administrator. He hams it up wonderfully in a part far removed from the nice guy he played in "The Honeymooners." This is one of those movies that looks like it was fun to make. It's definitely fun to watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars House Calls
Delightful romantic comedy benefits from a top-notch script (by Max Shulman and Julius Epstein-co-writer of "Casablanca"!), and the unexpected chemistry between lovable schlump Matthau and starchy Jackson, who are both fabulous. Affirming once again that true love will triumph over casual sex, "Calls" is a charming, clever romance, with plenty of laughs and heart. Matthau fans should flock to this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Food for the Coen Bros
Yes! I agree with the Coen Bros references. This is a wonderful film. The Time Out film guide rightly says that this film defines the term 'offbeat'. I found myself chuckling every few minutes. Caan was pumping out some true classics in his peak (71-74) and here you really appeaciate the nuances of the role. Look at the way he reacts to Kellerman's 'Crazy chick' - perfect! But the real star here is the writer W.D.Richter. I see from IMDB that he hasn't had a film out in over 5 years. Why? He's a bloody genius!

4-0 out of 5 stars Kellerman & Caan: an easy match
When critics do their lists of the great screen couples, bet you ten-to-one they'll overlook this duo. James Caan and Sally Kellerman are a wild pair of would-bes: he's an ex-con, she's a sexy, daffy schizophrenic. Throw in Peter Boyle and Louise Lasser as a nutty pair of suburbanites who go along for the ride and you've got a comedy classic. Deadpan jokes, unforced direction, a wild chase scene. True genius!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slick & Lithe
Although not a big fan of any of the main actors here, with the possible exception of Boyle, this is nevertheless a great screwball comedy.Fine comic plot involving the search for illicit money that works itself out perfectly, memorable comic characters, including eccentric subsidiary ones like Shull and Garfield, and just the exact right pace.An untrumpeted masterpiece.Truly memorable ...
