I need an icepick.
Do you know why sex is always the downfall of men? Because even when their lives are in danger, they still have to pull out their wanker. That sums up Michael Douglas's character's stupidity here. I mean, for the entire film he suspects her of being a cold-blooded killer yet he allows himself to sleep with her and fall in love with her. He's so stupid. I don't know any "magna cum laude p***y" worth getting an icepick in the throat.
Engrossing
One of the best films of the early 90's, doing more for female empowerment than any feminist rally.Stone in her star-making performance is as hot and sexy as she is ice-pick cold.The cinema of the teenage boy finds its purest expression.Its very effective thriller.More scary than sexy.Basic Instinct is, for the most part, a compelling whodunit anchored by strong lead performances. Douglas plays Nick with the same fire and intensity that characterized his brilliant work in Fatal Attraction.Sexually explicit and graphically violent psychological thriller is shocking and effective.

Incredibly Misunderstood and Understated 90's Film
I've always loved over-the-top films, in terms of acting, plot twists & turns, etc.The only problem?I don't know that the movie I just watched and adored was campy until someone else tells me as such.So was the case with "Showgirls", a movie I had heard so much bashing about that I was to the point where I couldn't believe it would be as bad as so many had previously labeled it.The surprise: I was right.
This is great movie
I have seen the movie several times & I love it. It is in my top 15 movies.
Ridiculous
The film itself includes a hysterical commentary by David Schmader called the greatest movie ever made, plus a pop-up trivia track that offers juicy insights such as Elizabeth Berkley's total time in the film spent naked.The rest of the box includes a collection of party games such as pin the pasties on the stripper and a pair of shot glasses and game instructions for various Showgirls-themed drinking games. It's almost as ridiculous as the movie itself.Highly recommended.Showgirls is fun

Great movie, lots of twists.
Total recall is a great thriller! It has many twists and turns, and the acting is superb. Predator will always be Arnold's best movie, but Total Recall is in the top six. Please note that there are some very, very, disturbing images that will keep you awake for weeks!

Definitely not science fiction
I've seen cheesy and I've seen wannabe with the difference between the two being the level pandering to a more intelligent audience. This movie is definitely for guys that like to get their Shakespeare from WWF. Schwarzenegger's best movie will ever be Terminator. If he could have ended with the classic "I'll be back" and not really come back to make any number of horrid films we might actually have some decent science fiction. Last good science fiction I saw was Gattaca. Total Recall definitely ain't science fiction and isn't even very good action as compared with say the mindless gore of predator. a very good Dutch movie seen from a Dutch point of view
In the late seventies Paul Verhoeven's 'Soldaat van Oranje' (= Soldier of Orange) was a huge success in the Netherlands. Not in the least by its authentic Dutch locations, as well as by employing the best Dutch actors & actresses around at the time.
"Even if they die, they will keep the Nazis busy for months."
Winner of the Los Angeles Film Critics Award as Best Foreign Film in 1979, Soldier of Orange is based on the memoir of the same name by Erik Hazelhoff Roelfzema, one of the founders of the Dutch Resistance, aide to Queen Wilmelmina during her exile in England, and RAF Pathfinder pilot in the last days of the war. Directed by Paul Verhoeven, the film dramatizes the traumatic effects of the Nazi occupation on Holland, and the often futile attempts to form a local Dutch Resistance.
A Resistance's epic!
To my mind this film constitutes one of the most invaluable documents in the whole cinema story. This picture, inspired in real facts shows us the hardcombative spirit of the Dutch Resistance during the WW2.

Since its release almost two decades ago and subsequent transformation into a genuine entertainment franchise, RoboCop has been analyzed, psychoanalyzed, critiqued and its spare parts picked apart for rich sociological meanings and deep metaphorical layers.He's a tormented Christ figure!He's a noble Knight personifying our hopes and fears realized in one gleaming suit of high tech armor!All that is definitely appropriate, but something has been left out of the equation.
What have we here, you a good cop hotshot? The answer is a resounding YES!
The 1987 classic Robocop is one of my all time favorite movies next to Scarface(1983), First Blood(1982), Goodfellas(1990), Braveheart(1995), The Exorcist(1973), Animal House(1978) and The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie(1979).

What you don't see, can hurt you.....
"It's amazing what you can do, when you don't have to look at yourself in the mirror any more". Yeah, it's amazing alright and very scary too. This movie was pretty good. The plot is pretty simple, Kevin Bacon plays a scienctist named Sebastin Cane. Who is working on a formula for invisibility. When he does succeed, he decides to take things, to the next level. By trying the formula on himself. Everything seems to be fine at first. But, he can't reverse it. Then things go horrible wrong and Cane goes slowely in the mad. His other co-workers must race to find a way to cure him. Before, it's too late. It's a new twist on a old movie.

Violent Horror
Hollow Man is a very violent horror film.The story is about a genius researcher named Sebastian (Kevin Bacon) who is working on a top-secret project on invisibility for the Pentagon.A young, exceedingly large-egoed individual, Sebastian has his research team cowed and under his thumb.The team lets him bend - or break - the rules because they genuinely admire his genius and believe in his ability.This blind faith proves to be their undoing.Sebastian tests the invisibility serum on himself.He disappears, all right, but the problem lies in making himself visible again.Although the procedure worked on primates, it won't work on him.
Good special effects, but disturbing!
I have to admit, the concept of not just an invisible man, but the observation of a man GOING invisible is original and creative. For this I score the two stars for this movie.Seeing skin evaporate to human organs to nothing is quite a sight which is done expertly by the special effects masters behind this movie.

No Reason To Be
The lengths which many are willing to go to provide some sort of intellectual justification of the existence of Starship Troopers never cease to amaze me. "Oh, it's satire," they say. "It is a subversive send up of fascism, the most brilliant since Dr. Stragelove." Well folks, I'm here to let the cat out of the bag. No it isn't. Starship Troopers is not subversive. Starship Troopers is not satire. Starship Troopers is just stupid. For all its smirking, in-on-its-own-joke faux camp and oh-so-ironic stabs at social commentary, Starship Troopers is nothing more than a schlocky sci-fi shoot 'em up aimed at adolescents (clearly demonstrating that the filmmakers knew all along that their 'subversive' film was a steaming turd) and directed with all the ham-handed prurience which we've all come to know and hate from Paul Verhoeven (whose chief claim to fame is Showgirls, the movie which ensured that no one would ever be curious enough to see an NC-17 film again).
Superbit Edition is aMasterpiece
This is just a blurb in support of the Superbit release of this fine film. One of the best looking sd-DVD's you're going to find, with picture quality surpassed only by a few other DVD's out there. Combine this with an upconvert dvd player, and you'll be very happy I promise.
Heinlein's running at 5GWH ...

Excellent Film
The film starts off as a freaky sex story and it ends with an unexpected tragedy.The cinematography is beautiful.TheDVD comes with a directors commentary track: Paul Verhoeven is very specific in explaining all the symbolisms and on-set events surrounding the film; great commentary track.I strongly recommend this film, and DVD, to anyone interested in twisted love stories.

AMust-See for Rutger Hauer Fans!
There are many wonderfully descriptive reviews to light the path to this enjoyable film. They are all true--faults and accolades. Hauer fans worldwide should enjoy this DVD.

A rarely screened cult favorite from Paul Verhoeven, this story of medieval war and revenge should please action fans and admirers of the director and his semi-regular leading man, Rutger Hauer, but its graphic scenes of sexual violence earmark it for mature viewers only. Hauer stars as a 16th-century mercenary hired by a Western European ruler (Fernando Hilbeck) to assault a neighboring kingdom; when the king reneges on his promises to Hauer and his men, they kidnap his son's fiancee (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and hole up in a nearby castle. Hauer and Leigh are standouts in a strong cast that includes Tom Burlinson, Bruno Kirby, the late Brion James, and Susan Tyrrell; Verhoeven's realistic approach to the down-and-dirty facts of medieval life and the bloody aftermath of warfare offers a refreshing alternative to most Hollywood period films, but a pair of brutal rape scenes may be too much for some audiences. The mercenaries were hired by the city's former ruler, Duke Arnolfini (Hilbeck), to reinstate him and avenge the insult by the town fathers. To encourage the mercenaries during the next attack, Arnolfini grants them a full day to take any spoils they can find within its walls one they get his forces inside. The plan works, and the mercenaries set about raping and pillaging with a vengeance.
Difficult to Encapsulate
A movie with rape at its emotional center can be challenging, shocking, and very well done.This is not that movie, unfortunately.
