5-0 out of 5 stars "This Will Be" a great video to own!
Natalie Cole's story, which was based on her best-selling autobiography, comes to vivid life on screen. Like Ms. Cole's book, this movie pulls no punches about the seemingly fairytale life she had as a child to her bouts with drugs, her rise to fame as a singing star, her family life, only for it to all come crashing down due to her addiction--and her amazing comeback due to the one thing she was running away from all her life: acknowledging the legacy of her father, the legendary pop/jazz artist, Nat "King" Cole, who had died a tragic death from lung cancer at the age of 45. At the time of his death, Natalie had just turned 15, and has said that his death was something she never got over, but never had the chance to grieve, whicheventually led her to drugs. That, and the need to be daring and experimental. But she explains that it wasn't until the mid-80s when she was in rehab for the second time that she realized this. Bottom line was, she missed her father tremendously.5-0 out of 5 stars A GREAT LOOK AT NATALIE COLE'S LIFE
I SAW THIS MOVIE ON TV AND IT WAS FANTASTIC.IT SHOWS HOW SHE USED DRUGS AND HOW IT AFFECTED HER LIFE AND CAREER.IT SHOWS HOW SHE WAS NOT CLOSE TO HER MOTHER.HER MOTHER DIDN'T WANT HER TO BE A SINGER.UP UNTIL THE LAST 30 MINUTES OR SO, THE ACTUAL NATALIE COLE TAKES OVER AS HERSELF.THE MOVIE ENDS WITH NATALIE RECORDING A DUET WITH NAT "KING" COLE AND HER PERFORMING ON THE GRAMMYS.ALL TOGETHER: FANTASTIC ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Forget The Profanity, Too Funny To Miss
I don't know why anyone would be offended by anything on this program. If you get offended by any joke here, you're TOO SENSITIVE, LIGHTEN UP, LAUGH BEFORE YOU FREEZE YOURSELF TOO DEATH, AND BUY THIS DVD.Besides Richard Pryor, George Carlin, Chris Rock, and Bill Maher, the spirit of this type comedy knows unparalleled genius for its refusal to compromise.Today's comics take note:this is the formula, not your overly safe filler. Can we get a return to honest to life comedy?

5-0 out of 5 stars A real, honest, and memorable film you must appreciate.
I've seen this wonderful movie several times and can honestly say this; The movie itself is dramatic, funny, moving, exciting, and intriguing. Needless to say that the sets are great and music is fantastic. I especially applaud the entire cast on such memorable acting performances. The movie was written by Keenen Ivory Wayans and directed Robert Townsend whom both emits a universal message through this film. Message being; No matter what happens in life, ups and downs, good or bad, gains or losses-we must lift ourselves through it and keep on pushing for the better ,no matter what. Just like in the song feature-"No matter how hard it gets, we haven't finished yet". I can say without a doubt that this movie took me through just about every basic human emotion possible in its 120 minute cycle. That in itself makes the movie compelling and realistic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Simply wasted potential
Strange movie. I find it both incredibly stupid and yet entertaining. I dont mean stupid in a campy fun way. I mean "What lame brained idiot wrote this?!?" kind of stupid. If it weren't for such a large array of a very talented all-star cast this movie would have no hope whatsoever. I do admit, as stupid Meteor Man was I actually enjoyed some parts of it very much.
5-0 out of 5 stars A funny and sincere classic
Meteor Man is sort of a comedy but it teaches you lessons as well. This is a great movie to show to older kids. While trying to be funny it puts across messages that should be taken in and followed. Now maybe people hate the movie because of Robert Townsend's attempt of a wacky super hero or maybe it's just because they have no imagination and can't get on his level.
3-0 out of 5 stars Funny Cult Classic
I thought it was funny when I first saw it back in the 90's and I baught it two weeks ago. RT reminds me of Eddie Murphy in his role as Meteor Man. You have to be open to this kind of humor to enjoy it. The special effects are good as well. Worth a look. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If it's perfection you must see...LOOK AT ME!!!!
This movie is hilarious. Nonstop laughter. I taped it off lifetime when it first aired and lost it. I recently moved and lo and behold I found it. I am shocked it didn't come out on the big screen. It's so much better than most of this slop they put out now. My favorite parts are when Jackie has the woman on the infomercial to eat the relaxer, when Jackie and Kim fight over the dresses, and when Jackie is trying to convince everyone to calm down about getting paid. "Leave Jackie to worry about the money" "You want to get paid? Honey, I don't carry cash, my daughter Antandra will take care of everything" "My good friend liza gave me that oscar, she wasn't using it" " I can't add or subtract but I learned alot about life and that's what matters." I could go on and on. I LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Side splitting comedy!
This movie is hillarious from beginning to end.I remembered seeing this movie on cable almost 20 years ago, and was delighted when the DVD finally came out. In a break from his usual he-man roles, Ving Rhames takes on the persona of "Holiday Heart," a church choir-directing female impersonator who is openly gay, religious, and alone. His loneliness ebbs when he rescues Wanda (Alfre Woodard) and her daughter from her drug-abusing boyfriend. He invites the pair to live free of charge in the duplex across the hall from his own and they form a family of sorts. But Wanda hooks up with a well-heeled drug dealer (Mykelti Williamson) and soon falls back into drug addiction, leaving Holiday to give up his own dreams and take care of the girl. 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies, Perfect Acting and Directing
"Holiday Heart" is one of the best movies I've seen. The acting, by everyone, was superb.Robert Townsend's direction and vision of the film was on point.I believe Alfre Woodard is one of the most underrated actresses and Ving Rhames is truly versatile as an actor. This movie will take you from laughter to tears to fear to compassion. This is a must see and must have movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ecxellant film with great performances
I caught this movie this morning on Logo and was blown away by it. Alfre Woodard, who is one of my favorite actresses, is amazing as the crack addicted mother. Her scene when she's watching her daughter read her prize winning poem is heartbreaking. Ving Rhames in a silver lame dress performing I Love the Night Life is a hoot. He does a lovely job as the openly gay Holiday who's a drag queen who can be just as tough as he needs to be when it's called for. His performane is terrific. All in all, this is a film that will make you laugh, cry and everything in between. Robett Townsend's direction is excellant. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An important story
This film covers the 12-year period from 1925-37, and all of the struggles that the African-American porters who worked for the George Pullman Railroad Company went through on their way to becoming successfully unionised. It seems so unthinkable and morally reprehensible that not so long ago in history, these hard-working men were allowed to be treated this way, like being beaten up, all called "George" instead of by their real names, ordered around, given tips for doing things like shining passengers' shoes or even barking like a dog, being at the white passengers' beck and call, being accused of stealing company property when it was the white passenger who had been attempting to steal the train's linens, and fired just because they'd dared to attend meetings about unionising. And because of the situation at the time, they couldn't protest, since making only $60 a month was still better than having no job.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent film that should be watched!!!
It's the 1920's and finding work is hard, but if you are a black man it's even worse. So if you happen to have a job as a Pullman on the trains, you work that job with pride, you don't complain, and you keep your mouth shut.It does not matter that you have your own name, it does not matter that you are seen as less then a man, it does not matter you have dirty shoes thrown at you to shine, you smile and you take it.But what happens when you finally realize enough is enough? What can you do, who do you turn to, how much are you willing to sacrifice to get what you truly deserve? Will you continue to stand for what you believe in, no matter how much others will dissuade you, or beat you down?
5-0 out of 5 stars Must see
Excellent - should be a must see for all high school seniors and college freshmen. This movie showcases excellent African-American talent as they present the hardships and struggles of A. Phillip Randolph and the Pullman Porters in trying to establish a union. It is an almost forgotten part of our history that should be remembered. ... Read more

The Richard Penniman (better known as Little Richard) depicted in this 2000 film was a flamboyant, larger-than-life character, not to mention a vital figure in pop music history--perhaps even "the architect of rock & roll," as he's called here. The Little Richard Story is a credible account of the man who, more than any other individual artist, erased the word "race-music" and created popular music.Although only a small part of his life and 55 year (and still counting) career was highlighted, the DVD really captures the essence of the man - the battle between his faith in the Lord and the temptations of the world, and the development of the most important musical art form of the twentieth century - rock music.Leon is amazing in the title role, bringing to the screen the attractive, sensual black musician with the raspy, force-of-nature voice, that racist parents in America fought so hard (and so unsuccessfully) to keep from their children's senses. If you love rock, r&b or rap, and are interested in the roots of the music (the black church), this DVD is a must to add to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exellent and highly entertaining film...
I saw this on cable, and it really was well produced, and although the film doesn't mention that Little Richard's main influence was Esquirita. This film may not be completely accurate, but it is a lot of fun to watch. The birth of jump blues & r&b started with Esquirita, but Little Richard made it a household name. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars The movie "Carmen: A Hip Hopera" is not all that it's cracked up to be.
I would have to say that I found this movie to be a disapointment, which is unfortunate. This is because the movie had some potential when it came to music and directing but unfortunately, little of that potential was realized.
4-0 out of 5 stars "Veryhip interpretation on an old classic"
It is as old as humankind, the ancient battle of the sexes.MTV does a good job in interpreting Bizet's finest masterpiece to modern-day realities, this time in inner-city Philadelphia where a virtuous police officer met Carmen at a well-populated watering hole. After arresting Carmen during a catfight, he gradually lost all self-control by spending a night at her apartment that resulted in his demotion and loss of his fiance.Things went downhill afterwards.Beyonce was good at playing the femme fatale character.
4-0 out of 5 stars liked it
I think the movie was great, even if beyonce doesn't seem that type of girl, she still did a great job. Even more then the movie itself, i just loved the "making of carmen" that u can find in the special features. I think it's worth buying!

5-0 out of 5 stars surprisingly good
I must admit that the movie had a slightly dragging quality about it.If you have the attention span of a typical MTV watcher, it may be difficult for you to engage with this film. However, the premise was interesting and the acting was way above average.I enjoyed it immensely, as I do many of Robert Townsends films. I know other reviews mention the film quality...and yes in some spots it's filmed a bit dark...but the film I watched wasn't grainy and everyone fit on my tv screen just fine.

2-0 out of 5 stars HARD TO ENJOY
It is with a heavy heart that I write a bad review for a Robert Townsend film. But, quite frankly, it must be done. The script is pretty good. It's not original by any means but it was well thought out and the acting was great. But it was really hard to enjoy any of this movie's good attributes because it's very difficult to watch. I'm not certain if it was poorly filmed or the transfer to DVD was done by someone who wasn't highly skilled. The film had a grainy quality to it but it didn't seem intentional as if done in a semi-documentary style. Many times you would hear dialog between two charactors who were barely visible. Their faces would be more than half way off the screen leaving the viewer with nothing to see but blue sky. What made it so bad was that I watched the trailer of this movie on the DVD which was very clear and in widescreen (which the film is not). Is this really the same man who is responsible for "The Five Heartbeats", "Hollywood Shuffle" and "Meteor Man"? I may have enjoyed this movie more if it wasn't so hard on the eyes.

Worth a look. ... Read more
