Editorial Review

It takes a lot to win. This movie is usually considered a classic of lesbian cinema, and that's too bad: its true sensuality lies in powerful erotic associations with running and the sheer pain of competition. The film opens with a memorable close-up of sweat dripping on tarmac, an early glimpse of a visual style which evolves throughout the picture into almost pornographic slow-motion sequences of high jumps, shot puts, and running legs.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ironic Movie
I liked the movie when I saw it in the early 80s because of the break through "love" scenes and the sports theme. Right now I'm listening to a late night talk show interview with Mariel Hemmingway! I was drawn to this site because I was looking for some info on Jodi Anderson who acts in the movie. I knew her because she worked out in my gym in the 1980s and also worked there. In reality the sports part could have been based on her. In 1980 when she was 22 she won both the pentathlon and the long jump in the Olympic trials for the boycotted Moscow games. She also represented the USA in the pentathlon in the 1984 LA Olympics but was injured and withdrew. Considering the fame (and money) that USA female track athletes achieved in 1984 and later, the boycott was a tragedy for her and the other athletes most of whom are relatively unknown.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Chemistry To Produce A Superlative Guy Movie
This film has EXACTLY the right ingredients for being one of the best Guy Flicks of all time.First, the behind-the-scenes look at athletic training techniques is incomparable. The preparation methods are highly educational, the stretching, the warm-ups, the cool-downs -- actually seeing these activities demonstrated is invaluable for aspiring athletes. Also, the details about various events were intriguing -- setting the blocks for sprinting, determining one's "pace" for high-jumping, the muscular ballet employed for the shot put.Watching Coach Scott Glenn (Urban Cowboy's "Wes Hightower") was inspirational, he obviously knew how to get the most from a team member. And the work-outs themselves were marvelous, the long runs, the hill-climbs, the post-workout massages and other physical therapy, with particular attention to specific body areas -- all of this information is extremely important for any male athlete, and should probably be viewed several times, numerous times, again and again, in order to ensure full comprehension and complete appreciation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Cast Makes for a Great Movie
Tequila Sunrise is one of the few action movies that you can watch until the end without ever getting tired of the fast-paced plot involving crime, drugs, money, etc.The dialouge is intense, the actors are great, and the plot doesn't drag on.Michelle Pfieffer and Mel Gibson show great chemistry, and also Raul Julia has a minor role that really showed his talent. This movie is a real fun one to watch.I'd reccomend it to any fan of action, or lover of great scripts. ... Read more

Editorial Review

This subtle and deeply moving film about the life of athlete Steve Prefontaine (Billy Crudup) is a rarity: a movie about the beauty of youth, as opposed to a patronizing, junk-culture youth film. Written by legendary Hollywood screenwriter Robert Towne (along with Kenny Moore) and directed by Towne with his usual masculine insight, bold creativity, and superior taste, Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Story of an Overachiever in Sports.
This film documents the training and durability of Steve Prefontaine from Oregon to become a track star who overcame all odds to win.In his early live, he had been picked on by bullies because of his mother's nationality so, like Forrest Gump, he had to learn to run fast from those crass youngsters. When he finished high school, he was courted by several universities but chose to stay in his home state to be trained by Bill Bowerman at the University of Oregon.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good bio pick of a great runner who died too young
Steve Prefontaine, a record setting middle distance runner, won all his races against Americans. He led his race in the 1972 Olympics but faded to fourth by a breath. He died in a car accident (drinking was involved, but to what degree is debated) in 1975 at the age of 24.All admit that he wasn't the perfect physical specimen for a runner, but he was gritty and tenacious and would not give anything less than everything he had.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
This is such a great true story of a man that we can all look up to.Prefontaine was an amazing runner who was the holder of every American distance-running record from 2,000 to 10,000 meters. The cast is top quality and the story will make you clue yourself to the seat so get some pop corn and a drink before you start because this is an amazing movie about a man who was spectacular. ... Editorial Review

Robert Towne is one of Hollywood's most celebrated screenwriters, but because his directorial efforts have been few and far between, anticipation was high when this star-powered crime story was released in 1988. Critical reaction was decidedly mixed, but there's plenty to admire in this silky, visually seductive film about a drug dealer (Mel Gibson) whose best friend from high-school (Kurt Russell) is now working for the Los Angeles sheriff's drug detail. Their personal and professional conflicts are intensified by their love for the same woman, a waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) at the Italian restaurant they both frequent. There's a big deal going down with a drug lord (the late Raul Julia), but as it twists and turns, Towne's story is really more about personal loyalties and individual honor. And even if it doesn't quite hold together, the movie's got a fantastic look to it (courtesy of the great cinematographer Conrad Hall), and the three stars bring depth and dimension to their well-written roles. 5-0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack Master - Mr. Dave Gruisin
Forget about the great movie for now and let's give credit to the great soundtrack that gives the movie its stylish southern California flair.I'm not referring to the rock and pop tracks but to the background music and the Dave Gruisin song on the soundtrack called "Jo Ann's Song".This was the track played during the steamy hot tub scene and added to the overall sensuality of the movie.Great sax riffs by David Sanborn! That song remains number one on my list of seduction tunes...

4-0 out of 5 stars Ain't Love Grand?
Though I cannot deny that it is unbelievably cheesy, filled with practically every cliche one can imagine and contains tons of embarrassing dialogue (especially Kurt Russell's begging speech) and unconvincing love scenes (Mel, will you please kiss her like you mean it and stop squirming!), I LOVE this movie. It satisfies the romantic in my soul. Michelle Pfeiffer, J. T. Walsh and Raul Julia make it worthwhile. My favorite scene is when the former drug dealer, Mac, tells Jo Ann why he hired her lawyer, Andy, as his lawyer and why he felt he needed a veneer of respectability. Pure Magic! Don't you love it when a man will reform for the love of a woman?
2-0 out of 5 stars well made and stylish . . .
But for me at least, I found it rather hard to root for Mel Gibson's character, given the fact that he was a major, major drug dealer. When the movie ended with him more or less riding off into the sunset with Michelle Pfeiffer and all the loot, I didn't find myself feeling exactly uplifted by it.Given the fact that the movie bent over backwards to depict Gibson as a loving father, a phenomenally successful businessman, and a super-stud, one might fairly say that this movie glamorizes drug-dealing. ...
