Editorial Review

Bill Bixby plays a 19th-century gambler who inherits responsibility for three orphans, but the kids in turn have something of value: a huge gold nugget. This Disney film from 1975 is an enjoyable potboiler with its sentimentality under control and the accent on laughs, most of which are provided, not unexpectedly, by Tim Conway and Don Knotts as thieves who want to get their hands on the treasure. An easy, safe film for children. You can't go wrong with this.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Review of Video's I ordered
I order video's from Amazon quite frequently and am always satisfied with their quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dumpling Gang is aDisney live-action classic
The Apple Dumpling Gang is a movie Disney made when for whatever reason they were straying temporarily away from animation and making more live action movies. And truthfully a lot of good(not great, but good)live action family films came out of the 1970's.
5-0 out of 5 stars great family fun
I had forgotten about this movie and my son who is now 25 asked me if I remembered watching it when my children where small.I did not.He thought it would be worth finding. So was very happy to find it on amazon.com along with some other oldies that both kids remembered. My kids were thrilled when they watched these oldies again. I also know that these good, funny movies will be watched by my grandchildren.pw ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I Like the Big Red Dog, No?
I saw this film when it was first released and watched it every time it was rebroadcast on the Disney television show. Even at the age of seven I was engrossed in the narrative of the orphan boy who wins the heart of an Irish setter. I found the actors comfortable with their roles and very watchable. I suppose in this era where everything has to flash and spin that this slower-paced movie may be considered "boring," but I still love it--I will take genuine emotion over flash and spin any day. My only complaint is that only this Anchor Bay version has the film in its proper perspective; the Disney version is pan and scan. When is the present Disney organization going to take some notice of REAL Walt Disney films again?

4-0 out of 5 stars BIG RED
I recently saw this film when I found it in 1 of my friend's house where they had several movies packed up & I liked the movie.I was glad to see an Irish Setter as the main animal in the film because we are so used to seeing Golden Retrievers,Yellow Labrador Retrievers, mixed breeds & Beagles.I loved how it was set in the province of Canada.I also think the scenery is beautiful.I loved the film buy it because it's not a dissapointing film!
4-0 out of 5 stars FAMILY FUN
BIG RED is a film your family should enjoy viewing together. The dogs are beautiful and "act" quite well; Gilles Payant, in spite of the hard to decipher French accent, brings an innocent joy and commitment to his role; Janette Bertrand as Theresa, the housekeeper, is fitfully feisty and endearing; and Walter Pidgeon is good in his transformation from heartless showman to caring father figure.Unfortunately, the characterizations are merely anecdotes to the lush scenery and shenanigans of boy and dog, and result in a tedious, sometimes dull narrative. However, it's heartwarming and enjoyable.Certainly not one of Disney's best but a refreshing tale in this day of special effects and low moral films. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage Disney, funny, animals, nice old car
Sammy The Way Out Seal is your average 1960s Disney family-animal comedy, with several effectively amusing comedy sequences and, probably due to Norman Tokar's direction, auniquely aesthetic underwater swimming scene, as the 3 children, the seal, and a dog play in a suburban pool.Tokar directed episodes of Leave It To Beaver and several Disney movies including Big Red, Savage Sam, Rascal, and A Tiger Walks.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good; clean fun.
I just wanted to write this review because this is one of my favorite silly; older; clean; family Disney films. I so enjoy good clean fun. And this one is so imaginative and humorous. Just about what could be more fun than the idea of two brothers coming home from a summer vacation with an adorable but mischievous seal and trying to keep him hidden from mom and dad? All the cast do their parts really well. I especially like Robert Culp's humor. He just so adds to the picture. I guess my favorite scenes are when the seal eats what is supposed to be a very expensive collection of tropical fish and the chaotic and humorous scene in the grocery store. Sophisticated; modern audiences may not appreciate this film; but they don't know what they're missing. Now this is good family entertainment! Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Operation Adopt-A-Seal, in a Hilarious Way!
Bill Mummy (Lost In Space), and Michael McGreevey (Snowball Express among other 70's Disney flicks) star as Arthur and Petey Loomis, two boys who are determined to have a great adventurous summer. While at their summer beach house, they discover a hurt seal. They quickly take him under their wings and nurse him back to health. They know their parents (Robert Culp and Patricia Barry) won't adopt such a wild animal, so when it comes time to go home at the end of the summer, they can't bear to leave Sammy the seal there and sneak him home in back of the family wagon.Read more

Wilson Rawls's novel about an Oklahoma boy's devotion to two hunting dogs during the Great Depression was the basis for this appealing 1974 film made by a former Disney director, Norman Tokar. Trivia...
5-0 out of 5 stars Good clean comedy
A seasoned Coast Guard Lt. Jordan (Joey Forman)is transferring out of one of the craziest, most crowded recreational harbors in the US coastlines, Newport Beach Harbor, California. Robert Morse stars his bumbling new replacement, Coast Guard Ensign Thomas Garland. This wacky movie is about the trials and tribulations faced by those rescuers at sea that must save the amateur weekend boaters (beatniks) from themselves. The great Don Ameche stars as the tough area Commander who served with Garland's father, a famous Admiral, so he has high expectations of Garland Jr. On the other hand Garland feels that he is jinxed to live in his father's shadow, contributing to his bad luck. Kate (Stefanie Powers) runs a local boat rental and sailing school. After rescuing him from his own wreck, she gets romantically involved with the Ensign as they must join forces to catch some jewel thieves. Phil Silvers, Mickey Shaugnessy, and Norman Fellstar as the 3 bumbling jewel thieves on the run from the police. This movie is simply loaded with visual sight gags and slapstick comedy. During the opening credits alone there are 4 funny mishaps and rescues. Bob Haskins as Chief Walsh. Chiyoko Kuni as the Japanese geisha, Joe Flynn, Wally Cox, Tom Lowell, Vito Scotti, Sammy Jackson, Joe Ross, Judy Jordan, Al Lewis. Kelly Thordson is the police officer on a motorcycle, a role he played in 5 Disney films. Many of the actors appeared in other Disney comedies of the period.

Sorry, LOL.I agree about the Disney rip off. They really should put out a quality product.I've got a whole wish list on Amazon as # 5 - don't buy for me, waiting for a better transfer to happen before I buy them.Mostly from Disney!Disney, if your listening, don't worry about the next generation of this sale being widescreen. The next generation will be HD and then it will be HD on 3", etc.So Disney, you have lot of future releases available too make your money. Descriptions of Candleshoe's plot abound giving many details BUT I remember this very same plot- - -from Mr. Disney no less --- from my own childhood.
5-0 out of 5 stars it changed my entire life!
i remember very clearly when i saw the preview for this movie, when i was a kid. until that moment, when jodie foster ran down the street and threw a banana peel in a mailbox, i'd never found a female person (celebrity or otherwise) who could make me feel good about being a girl. i loathed all female vocalists and all actresses, and the actual females in my life weren't that much better. jodie foster was the first of several young actresses to change my world. it was several years before i actually got to see the movie but i loved it. i saw it again as an adult and still thought it was adorable.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beginnings and Endings
Candleshoe is a family estate in England. There is a rumor that there is a fortune hidden there. Most think it is just a myth but Harry has found a clue to the fortune. But he needs someone on the inside to figure it out.

When New York accountant Johnny Baxter (Dean Jones) learns he has inherited a Colorado hotel, he promptly quits his thankless job, packs up his dubious family, and heads west. Since this is a Disney comedy, the inn's only customers turn out to be nonpaying raccoons and its decorating motif is strictly cobweb. To make matters worse, the local banker not only refuses Baxter a loan, but tries to buy out the desperate newcomer with a lowball figure. But with the help of an eccentric squatter (Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Disney 'Almost' Classic
When a cuddly baby raccoon snuggles his way into the life of a lonely boy named Sterling North (Billy Mumy), things go riotously awry as the ringtail's mischievous nature gets more and more out of control. Everyone in the small town gets to know Rascal, whether they want to or not - the bandit-masked mammal is especially fond of the eggs in the neighbor's chicken coops. Eventually, it's decided that Rascal will have to be returned to the wild. But Rascal doesn't want to go!
4-0 out of 5 stars A Must for Raccoon Lovers
If you are a Procyon Lotor lover, this film is for you. If you're looking for a classic, lively Walt Disney animal film--this one isn't it. The film follows Sterling North's book, and does it well.Yes, it seems to drag at times, and therefore does not "meet" the high action/drama expectations of today's viewers. But this film was made before the days of high-tech computer animations, and the coons used in it--are real--and therefore a true representation of this wonderful, mischievious critter. This whole film deals with a raccoon. It is not just a brief "tease" scene in a film for us raccoon lovers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Film for Animal Lovers
Disney did a good job of incorporating Sterling North's story of "Rascal" into a film. The film version remains close to the book's story. While Rascal is mainly a children's film, it also good for viewers who love animals. The raccoon does a lot of cute things the film has a relatively happy ending. ... Dean Jones has a typical '60s occupation: ad man. Widower Fred Bolton is in need of a fantastic campaign to promote the stomach pill Aspercel. And in typical Disney get-a-kid-and-animal-in-there fashion, he makes the contrived decision to accommodate his sweet teen daughter Helen's longing for a horse, and advance the elusive ad campaign. Fred figures if he and Helen (Ellen Janov, in her only film role) can make a champion of the horse (now named, you guessed it, Aspercel), the name will get in the papers and Helen will have her horse.Complications arise when Helen reveals she hates riding in shows. Fortunately, her riding teacher, the beautiful Suzie Clemens (underratedDiane Baker), agrees to take up the cause, and sparks a little romance with the ambitious dad. The trio have a challenging competition and Suzie's ex, the wealthy and conceited Archer Madison (Lloyd Bochner, in a role he played often), to deal with, but as with all Disney films, good and earnest triumphs over smug and self-satisfied. Look for a young Kurt Russell, who has little to do but grace the movie (and Helen) with a little teen idolness. His introduction into the film--driving a red convertible MG--is hilarious. A sweet, easy-to-watch, harmless--if a little forgettable--film. (Ages 4 and older) Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars old-fashioned fun
This is not an exercise for the intellect, but a plain, innocent film with the familiar boy meets girl theme done the way Disney used to make films. There's a refreshing quality to this very non-technological movie with no computer graphics.I enjoyed the horse-show footage, and it will most definitely appeal to horse lovers of whatever age. This is not just for the young folks, but for us older folks too. It will cause lots of amusement, and the acting is just right for this kind of a film. This is just right for a break from the violence, and so called "adult" garbage that the movie makers put out now.Sit back and be prepared for old-fashioned fun that everyone in the family can enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A family classic
Just when a harried New York advertising exec (Dean Jones) finds himself at the end of his rope trying to deal with an impossible deadline for an aspirin ad campaign and his teenaged daughter's (Ellen Janov) incessant demands for a horse, he has an ingenious idea: Get the aspirin company to sponsor a show jumper, one that his daughter can ride. Enter a lovely dapple gray, Aspercel (played by Albarado, who was doubled by Could Be and Sir Winston), a spirited steed who answers everyone's prayers... for awhile. Vintage Disney high jinks clear all obstacles including puppy love, the corporate world, and high stakes horseshow competitions. Based on the book The Year of the Horse by Eric Hatch.
5-0 out of 5 stars Susie Rides a winner!
This movie starts off with a girl named Helen who is taking riding lessons at Susie's place. Helen's father is an Account Executive with an ad agency in New York and receives a bill that he feels is too high and pays a visit to the stables. This is the first visit and Helen is happy to introduce her father to Susie. The payment matter is settled and that evening he has to come up with a campaign for a heart burn pill.

4-0 out of 5 stars MAD ABOUT CATS
This is a fairly old Disney movie which I remember seeing the first time it came around. It is entertaining and kids should appreciate it.Be warned!I live in South Africa and this is the first time I have had problems with a Zone 1 movie from Amazon.I also bought 'The Three Lives of Thomasina' and 'Bell, Book and Candle' - same vintage - as I said, mad about cats!

5-0 out of 5 stars Abbysin-sational
This was the first movie that I ever *remember* seeing. It stands out in my mind (and yes probably has clouded my viewing judgement for years) because it was the first film to ever feature the mode of moggy that has been my constant companion for over 25 years - The Abbysinian. An Abby was the perfect cat to play Zunar-J5/9-Doric-47 (or Jake for the non fanatics out there). Being three years old and the proud owner of one of the first Abbys in Australia - I remember for days after putting different collars on my very patient cat Tawney and begging him to talk to me. He obviously didn't, and it broke my little heart, but what he couldn't express verbally he more than made up for with his smooches and furry nudges. Ok the Film never won an Oscar, it was a Disney Kid flick, but as kid flicks go - it was all right. And lets face it - I can't be all bad, McLean Stevenson, Harry Morgan AND Roddy McDowell! '
4-0 out of 5 stars Great family movie, with more emphasis on the younger kids
The kids enjoyed it, and even we did.Certainly not the most believable premise, but if you can get past that, it's a great film.Definitely a typical "older" Disney film! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Tracy and Jay Osborne's mother is shipping the unwilling children off to their grandfather's house for Easter vacation while she attends to business in Hong Kong. The children plot a trip to visit their mother and, with the help of Jay's pet skunk, evade their grandfather and airport security to escape in a taxicab with two safe-cracking vandals. The foursome proceeds to stage a kidnapping--although just who kidnapped whom is up for debate. Grandfather refuses to pay the ransom, the police get involved, and hilarity reigns as the desperate group attempts to collect the ransom money. The talents of Barbara Feldon, David Niven, Darren McGavin, and Don Knotts rejuvenate this fairly unremarkable plot. Slapstick comedy, perilous excursions, and fast-paced chase scenes abound in this wholesome 1976 Disney production. (Ages 3 and older) Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Totaly Underestimated !!!!!!!!!!
I think this movie gets far to little credit. The skunk and car chase are the funnies parts of the movie. Kids will probably like this movie better than adults because they like jokes that an adult would label as "overly funny." Please, watch the movie yourself before you judge it based on the reviews.

2-0 out of 5 stars Niven is good, movie drags.
MOVIE: No Deposit, No Return is a 1976 Disney movie I looked forward to seeing as a kid after viewing the theatrical trailer. I distinctly remember it showing scenes of the police chase and two police cruisers sideswiping each other. But the movie was ultimately a forgotten by me, probably for good reason. (This theatrical trailer is NOT included on the DVD despite what the packaging says. The DVD includes a TV spot for NDNR from "The Wonderful World of Disney".)
3-0 out of 5 stars fine Disney caper
NO DEPOSIT NO RETURN is a fun Disney caper-comedy, starring David Niven and Barbara Feldon.

Wilson Rawls's novel about an Oklahoma boy's devotion to two hunting dogs during the Great Depression was the basis for this appealing 1974 film made by a former Disney director, Norman Tokar. Stewart Peterson is very effective as a 12-year-old, hurtling down the path toward manhood with hounds at his side. (Though how he raised $50 to get the pooches in that economic climate is still a mystery....) Read more

"Where the Red Fern Grows" is as good as I remember frommy youth.Great for the whole family, it brings out a range of emotions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Movie about friendship
I bought this for my granddaughter who had read the book with her class at school. She wanted the movie to share with the class. She likes to read books and then see the movie if available. It seems to help in seeing the characters and the story line. All of the family has viewed this movie and we all love to watch it every chance we get. I highly recommend this movie for all families.

My only complaint is that only this Anchor Bay version has the film in its prop
