From the pen of James Toback comes this ridiculous talk-fest, in which people seem to say whatever comes into their minds, whether it's interesting, germane, or doesn't even makes sense. What story there is centers on Robert Downey Jr., an inveterate womanizer who meets the girl of his dreams--and the one woman immune to his charms. She's Molly Ringwald, and her drunken father (Dennis Hopper) is in debt up to his neck to the mob. So she agrees to go to Atlantic City with a surly mobster and his cronies (Danny Aiello and Harvey Keitel), who have more than gambling on their minds. Downey tries to save Ringwald, even as he attempts to convince her that he can curb his wandering eye and be faithful to her. These people never shut up, but you'll quickly wish they would. 1-0 out of 5 stars I can't believe people enjoy this movie
This movie is complete garbage. I actually like Robert Downey Jr as an actor but hated him in this movie. Please do yourself a favor and don't watch this trash.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not for somebody to model after
I've watched this movie a few times together with our workshop students discussing it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Why won't you go out with me?
Robert downey plays a smooth talikng problem solver who tries to pick up a good-two-shoes teacher who is also a really good luck charm when it comes to playing casinos whose father is in enormous debt who is being bailed out by robert while still trying to pick up molly while being pursued by a scary hitman harvey keitel while being funny the whole time.

4-0 out of 5 stars Asking ordinary folk about the origins of the universe...
We have all seen "man in the street interviews," where a microphone is shoved in someone's face and a sound bite is gathered for the nightly news as the great issues of our time are considered by ordinary folk who offer baleful opinions or heated comments for mass consumption.James Toback's 1990 documentary "The Big Bang" shows what you can find when you take the time to get into the minds of the masses. The premise is rather simple: Toback heads off with his camera and ask people how they think the world began. He interviews 18 people from the proverbial all walks of life, from nuns to gangsters, from astronomers to violinists. There is even Daryl Dawkins the NBA's infamous self-proclaimed Chocolate Thunder known for his shattering of backboards more than philosophical musings, but always a fun interview.Their initial answers are usually what we would expect, but what makes their responses interesting is that the topic quickly expands way beyond the Big Bang.We get what these people think about, well, the great issues of all time: God, sex, love, race, class, life, death and much, much more.It is not so much that there is great depth out there on the street, but rather than people put big things together in the most interesting combinations.More to the point, Toback manages to arrange these bits and pieces into a coherent argumentative structure of sorts. The end result is that you cannot help but think about your own thoughts on these issues and how they matter in your own life, even if no one with a camera is asking you."The Big Bang" is not a great documentary, but it is certainly interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best film I have ever seen!
Anyone out there who liked "My Dinner with Andre" will surely love this movie. It is an absorbing look into the variety of worldviews that exist among our fellow human beings. What makes this so fascinatingis the choice of those that are interviewed for the movie -- from athletesto Auschwitz survivors (even the late movie producer, Don Simpson). If youhave any interest in the BIG QUESTIONS about our existence, you must seethis movie! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time, love or money.
I took a UCLA extension class in the early '80s called "Sneak Previews" which was self explanatory: it was essentially viewing movies before they were released to the general public. This was one of them, and it turned out to be one of the biggest pieces of cinematic crap I have ever had the dishonor of sitting through. Ornella Muti is gorgeous as all-get-out, but she cannot act to save her life, at least in this stinker. The fact that this person is the only thing I can remember about this movie says it all. If it ever turns up on TV, change the channel, or if you can't, run like hell.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ornella Muti strong debut in the Usa
AS it was written by the BIBLE of the genre VARIETY this film introduces the Goddess of Italian stars Ornella Muti to the American audienceshowing the actress beauty and charm....a wonderful actresswhose appeal has been compared to the one of Sophia Loren.Read more

Editorial Review

James Toback's portrait of white and black culture mixing it up on the streets of Manhattan is like two films colliding. In the center of the swirl are a group of upper-class white teens (led by Elijah Wood and pop singer Bijou Phillips) who appropriate hip-hop culture to rebel against their affluent lifestyle, and a posse of gangstas and drug dealers (led by rap producer Oli "Power" Grant) who are themselves trying to get off the streets and into the business culture through their music. Aging indie filmmaker Toback has long shown an interest in character contradictions and quirks. Here the dynamic works: The two groups are genuinely curious about one another and mix with a cautious but untroubled ease. Less successful is the contrived drama that orbits this cultural mix but never quite meshes--such as Ben Stiller as a self-loathing New York cop who blackmails college basketball star Allan Houston into betraying his boyhood buddy turned street criminal.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Incoherent mix
I'm not an American so I don't know the relationships between whites and blacks, but I think both are presented at their worst in this movie. Some stupid impossible situations with no coherent flow, a lot of open sex, "nothing sacred" - nothing to aspire to in this movie. I bought it despite the bad reviews because I am a huge Elijah Wood fan, and I must tell you that he does shine as always, but only for a few short moments, so it's not worth your money - you will have to suffer to the end to see him kiss Brook Shields. I gave it 2 stars (and not 1)because it is not a mainstream movie, it is a bit different from everything i saw and maybe sometimes funny and interesting, but you know it's all not real.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cooperate not segregate
Finally a movie that shows black and white unite and learn about each other's culture. There are various stars in this movie from comedians to athletes, and musicians to actors. Each actor or entertainer played a part. There should be more movies like this one to cut out the sterotype in our American society. I think white kids should stop loving rap, they will turn into negative people. I love seeing Mike Tyson play a small part in this film.

3-0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching But This One is Not For Every One
I live in New York City and I could relate to this film.It was not a perfect movie but I think anyone who has some real experience in the New York area, especially in the hip-hop scene might find it interesting, but not necessarily totally accurate.I think Toback is trying to explore stereotypes though.I do not think that he is actually endorsing them here, but, instead, satirizing them - the drug dealer, the sports athlete, the macho male black sex fiend and the rapper. He has some moderate understanding of the peculiar way that blacks and whites are relating to each other in the new era, at least in New York. There are some really telling scenes when Mike Tyson castigates Brooke Shield's camera saying something like : "Wondering what the animal will do next?".I think Toback is trying to explore America's race-obsession but in a very subtle understated way.Hence, the looming camera of Brook Shields (i.e."the media") and the ridiculous questions she asks.Nevertheless, at the end of the day, much of the movie seems so contrived and over-acted.But I am glad he at least tried to explore this topic.I think it will definently appeal more, to strong Wu-tang fans, New Yorkers and younger folks though. He gets an A for effort; C for execution.

Substitute "Gals" for "Girls" and you might mistake this for one of those romantic-comedy trifles they cranked out during World War II. Nothing could be further from the truth, though the film does have a lot to say about modern romance, and you'll laugh--while also gasping--frequently as the film unreels over a riveting hour and a half.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time
There is no acting in this film. All it is is 80 minutes of conversation between three people which sometimes becomes so unbearable , that i wonder why I just didnt switch the movie off!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Two Girls, A Guy and a complete waste of time
Love Heather Graham and that is why I bought this movie. The "explicit sex scene" is not explicit and in fact, is not much of a sex scene.Great idea and could have been a great movie.Talent was there, opportuinity was there, but all wasted.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Dissappointing !!!
Like most reviewers, I rented this movie because Sarah Michelle Geller was in it.I am a HUGE fan of Buffy and her other movies such as Scream and the Grudge. She is an extrememly talented acctress and after watching this movie I can't imagine WHY she agreed to star in this film.Quit simply it was horrible. Some of the sex scenes she had were too racy for my taste and just dissappointing that she would agree to sell herself like this.Oddly enough after this movie her next 2 hits would be the Family movies - Scooby Doo and Scooby Doo part 2.I read on alot of fan sites that they were upset in her role in this movie. After this her roles were MUCH more carefully chosen.Thank Goodness !!If you are still unsure .. I highly suggest renting this instead of spending your $$ on purchasing it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sarah Michelle Gellar could have chosen better.
The only reason why I decided to buy this movie was because Sarah Michelle Gellar was in it. 1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry, this movie was terrible.
I dearly love Sarah Michelle Gellar and Joey Lauren Adams. The whole reason I bought this movie in a $5.99 bargain bin was because of the two of them. And neither nor both of them was enough to save this film for me.

Editorial Review

The debut film for director-writer James Toback has developed a cult following over the years but was one of three 1978 films that put a damper on Harvey Keitel's career for more than a decade. In this overheated brew of testosterone and male sensitivity, Keitel plays the son of a fading mob boss; Dad forces him to work as a leg-breaker collecting bad debts while Mom wants him to pursue a career as a classical pianist. Isn't this how Van Cliburn got his start? Keitel rides an emotional roller coaster, torn between parental poles even as he faces the audition that could launch him on the concert circuit. Oh, and for good measure, he starts to suffer doubts about his own manhood, thanks to an encounter with ex-footballer Jim Brown. Strictly for Toback and Keitel aficionados. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Mean Streaks
"Fingers" is solid 1970s character study starring Harvey Keitel as conflicted man struggling to unite his disparate persona. On one hand, he's a talented musician who loves to listen to Bach and carries a boombox around so that he can listen to 60s R&B.However, he's also a violent thug who does his even more brutal father's bidding. The movie follows his character over a few days as he attempts to resolve who he is and what he stands for in life. It's a short, dark film that's very good to great in nearly every aspect.
1-0 out of 5 stars Made by the director for the director film that did not connect with me.
This is a movie that seems abstract though it isn't.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fingers
Harvey Keitel rules---Toback makes sure that NYC circa 1978 is not mistaken by those who had the luxury to see what was all about NYC at that point in time...The most impotant actor during that period of NYC "movie-dom" (regardless of Woody and Martin) is Keitel. . .He's never been a product of "witness protection", while he's blown away as a pimp, or a free-base detective--Good night, rradiof ...
