5-0 out of 5 stars Modern masterpiece!
Karl (Billy Bob Thorton) is a mentally challenged former killer that done a serious crime 25 years ago has been released back home. While he's there he meets and befriends a young boy (Lucas Black) and his widowed mother (Natalie Canerday) whom has trouble with the abusive boyfriend Doyle (Dwight Yokem) as it suddenly remindes Karl of his horrific past.
5-0 out of 5 stars IS ALREADY A CLASSIC
The only bad thing I can say about this movie is that director/actor/writer Billy Bob Thornton (BBT) will never top it.Watch the included extras on Disc II of this release (over three hours worth) and you'll see that BBT agrees with that prediction."Sling Blade" is simply a GREAT movie, already a classic. It is better each time I watch it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, big hearted film

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring
I just wanted to get my 1 star recorded as payback to this movie for wasting my time, although I did start doing other things halfway through. The only positive thing I can say is that the actor portraying Blevins, the third wheel, did a fine job. When he wasn't onscreen I was wondering what he was up to and wishing I could be spending my time with him, instead of the other two dullards we are unfortunately stuck with.Penelope Cruz adds zero to the movie.Don't know if it's due to editing or acting and don't really care. Can you tell i'm disgusted? If you're a movie fan or a western fan you should be too.

5-0 out of 5 stars First of the trilogy
This book shows McCArthy at his descriptive best- his writing is almost lyrical. A beautifully written tale of modern cowboy life, he knows what he is writing about as if he did it all himself. You must read this novel as the first part of the trilogy of this modern western style- but don't think "cowboys" as in the old Zane Gray days! These are all together other.

5-0 out of 5 stars The necessary leap from the innocence to experience!
A young boy will live in own flesh, an experience `s lesson, when his mother decides to sell their Ranch in Texas, 1949. That personal decision will lead him to make a decisive choice that will mark his life forever.

Editorial Review

Billy Bob Thornton's white-trash comedy has loads of appeal, beginning with a delightful cast playing the most dysfunctional Southern family outside a Faulkner novel. Thornton and Laura Dern play married couple Claude and Ruby Montgomery, whose true love is stymied by petty jealousies over her old boyfriends and his long-ago romance with Ruby's sister, Rose (Kelly Preston). When Claude's Uncle Hazel (Jim Varney) is arrested, the duo join their extended clan in Little Rock to provide support for him and his defense team (a stormy couple sharply played by Jamie Lee Curtis and Ben Affleck). But cooperation is an alien concept to this family; in no time they're bickering, drinking, and deflating dreams. Typical of Thornton, this is serious yet funny stuff, and the actors--including Andy Griffith, John Prine, Diane Ladd, and Brenda Blethyn--work that fine line between drama and comedy with admirable inspiration. 4-0 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Them Rednecks
Billy Bob has once again tapped his southern roots and allowed us to see the dysfunctional family members that we all have in their best light. The film abounds with superlative performances from all involved. Additionally, the Marty Stuart soundtrack with guest performances from John Prine, Ray Benson and Dwight Yoakam is a great enhancement and supports the comedy completely.
