Editorial Review

Don't waste this one on your children: buy it for yourself. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. Unfortunately, director Caroline Thompson did not resurrect her magical touch a few years later with another animal tale, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fairly Faithful Version of the Sewell Classic
This is a beautifully photographed and well-acted version of the Anna Sewell book that was published as a plea for better treatment of horses in the 1800s, and is unique in that, unlike most other film versions, especially the 1970s film with Mark Lester, that it stays fairly close to Sewell's original story. I am marking one star off for the really corny convention of having Black Beauty "in love" with Ginger...good grief, the horse was a gelding, not a stallion. Ginger was his stablemate, not his "lover" as they imply. Otherwise they got it all correct.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really quite stunning
I rented this thinking that my son might enjoy it, and that I might possibly be able to stand to sit through most of it.

This version of Black Beauty, is the best. The narration works very well. There will not be a dry eye in the house, I can tell you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars fair and slightly liberated
I saw this movie when it first aired on TV and have been looking for it again ever since (so it's been a while since I've seen it).As previously noted the visuals are very nice and the rendition of the story is not bad, but the key part for me was when the Handsome Prince declares his love for Snow White and she lashes back with a speech about how he doesn't know her, he's fallen in love with a vision from across the room. All her life she's been surrounded by people who don't look past the surface of her beauty...

5-0 out of 5 stars Fairest movie of them all
Snow white is my favorite fairy tale, and this is my favorite rendition. It's far closer to the original tale than most, but it addsi many of it's own elements that give it a fresh new approach.I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars the best movie
this is kind of a remake of the original movie made.

1-0 out of 5 stars Found it irritating
I thought it would be cute but it's just a crazy rich woman who indulges her love of animals by turning her home into a zoo. For some reason, instead of amusing me, it annoyed me. Dressing chimps as people and treating them like spoiled children. And she does the same with the gorilla, Buddy. She first saved Buddy but instead of using common sense, she decides to try to make it as human as possible. Of course, he turns on her later and she finds out that yes, gorillas are wild animals.

great kids movies. i'd recomend it to anyone with kids. it shows selflessness, love and compasion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny and Irresistible......
Buddy is such a cute movie. It is the telling of a true story in which Trudy Lintz, ( played by Rene Russo ) a true animal lover, "adopts" a baby male gorilla. Trudy already has a home filled with many animals including birds, dogs and chimps. Being rich, she was able to provide these animals with a very loving home and environment. The mischevious chimps Joe and Maggie are halarious in this movie as we see them do everything but talk! We see Buddy grow from a baby gorilla into a huge silverback. There are very funny scenes in this movie and a few that are sad like when we see Buddy wanting to be set free. We see Buddy escape and create much chaos. Eventually, Trudy realizes that Buddy would be much happier among other gorillas so she buys him his own "sanctuary" where he is set free among other gorillas. This is a movie for both grown ups and kids alike. It will keep you entertained from beginning to end! ... Read more
