5-0 out of 5 stars Murder, Romance And A Chase Through The Lake District
David Somers (Trevor Howard) was a British agent who had a tough war and has been let go by his spymasters. He takes a job at a country house where he can get away from cities and people. The job is to catalogue the extensive butterfly collection belonging to Nicholas Fenton (Barry Jones). Fenton lives in the place with his sister, Jess (Sonia Dresdel), and their niece, Sophie Malraux (Jean Simmons). There also is a thuggish gameskeeper who seems to have a relationship of some sort with Sonia and who pushes himself on Sophie.
4-0 out of 5 stars The Lake District is a beautiful place indeed
This is an interesting film about England, though it is a thriller and its main objective is to describe a crime and to follow the investigation. But the main part of the film is a chase of the police after two escapees, one of them being the suspected killer . This chase makes us discover England, a rather old period of it, under a very interesting light. We have a close vision ofLiverpool harbour, of the railway station, of the Lake District, etc. It also shows how a man from the secret services has connections in all quarters of the city and is able to get about everything he wants. It also indicates how the police is unable to cope with an ex-secret-serviceman whereas a man from the secret service can get him rather fast. This escapee knows it and he plans it so that he is just one leap ahead, just enough to escape and bring the real criminal to the trap he lays out for him. It is amazing to discover how many people in England help this man because of his reputation we imagine is positive and because he escapes the police, and thus must be right and has to be helped and protected. This kind of reaction is rather rare in England where the police is very well respected. It is thus necessary to mention it because this solidarity is quite uncommon. Apart from that the thriller itself is very well made and the acting is quite good, for a little film of that type. This is also very English, at least in a time when they had a good independent cinema industry : even a little film had good actors, which was and still is far from being the case in the USA.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars oh ... Brigitte
'Doctor at Sea' is your average English fifties-comedy, offering two outstanding dimensions: leading man Dirk Bogarde acts with his ususal excellence, and young Brigitte Bardot adds lots of charm by speaking English-with-a-French-accent.

3-0 out of 5 stars The TV series is funnier
This popular series of comic novels was filmed twice:as a series of feature films in the early 1950s and as a British sitcom 1969-77.Having seen parts of both, I prefer the TV series (although the films are probably more faithful to the books). This is partially because more was permitted in the way of sex and scatology by the time the TV series was made. But I also think the TV show was better cast.Dirk Bogarde struck me as an odd choice for the lead role of the naive young medical student; comedy isn't really Bogarde's forte.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a review, but for what its' worth...
Most of the Soldiers used in the Rank film were USAF Airman stationed at Chateauroux AFB Base in Indre. They were selected, because they were in good condition, mostly tall and had short hair. The monk/priest, who gave the last rites, was also an Airman. In the guillotine scenes, He winged it and used the sign of the cross. The Director loved it! Unfortunately, he did it backwards and being sticklers for the truth, the Director cut his great ad-lib. So much for a brush with fame. They did serve great food.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic British Version of The Immortal Dickens' Story
There have been a number of fine film versions of the famous novel by Charles Dickens "A Tale of Two Cities", stretching right back to the 1917 silent version starring William Farnum and as recently as the 1980's there have been various television productions. However the two versions that stay in my mind and have rightly earned the accolade of "classic" are the lavish MGM version from 1935 starring an unforgettable Ronald Colman, and this 1958 British production starring Dirk Bogarde in the much loved role of disillusioned and world weary lawyer Sidney Carton. Both men brought their own individual styles to this famous role and Dirk Bogarde really came into his own here after his successful turn in the "Doctor", series of movies for the Rank organisation. He was a perfect casting choice as the self loathing but ultimately lonely English lawyer who achieves at the eleventh hour, the ability to love and find some inner peace through the ultimate self sacrifice during the frightening eruption of the French Revolution. With his good looks, serious demeanour, and projection of a wasted life Dirk Bogarde gives I believe one of his best performances ever in "A Tale of Two Cities", and along with the first rate British supporting cast and a lavish budget for a British film at that time, combines to create a worthy successor to David O. Selznick's legendary 1935 version.

3-0 out of 5 stars No.5 In The Series
Following hot on the trail of Carry On Constable (1959), Peter Rogers and Gerald Thomas came up with a slightly less ambitious comedy with Carry On Regardless. There is really no strong backbone of a plot in this one with it centering around The Helping Hands Agency. The Agency takes on six unemployed men and women and one of the clerks at the labour exchange who decides to join them in a quest for a new, more exciting job. They each find themselves plunged into a very odd, diverse range of assigments, which range from taking a chimp out for the day, trying to stay sober at a wine tasting and demonstrating new pieces of equipment at the Ideal home Exhibition. Of course being a Carry on film, everything they put their hands to turns horribly wrong! As there is just basically a series of sketches, the film overly feels disjointed and there is a feeling of something missing that you can't quite put your finger on. This is, however, nothing to do with the cast who are all on top form and are all clearly having a ball. The cast of regulars include Sid James, Joan Sims, Kenneth Williams, Charles Hawtrey, Hattie Jaques (yet again in the role of Matron) and the bumbling ecccentric, Kenneth Connor. Certainly some laughs to be had and some sequences are consistently amusing but the film is patchy and at times shows signs of not quite knowing where its going. If you're a big carry on fan then its still worth a look.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Will you please try and control yourself."
In the British comedy film, "Carry On Regardless" Bert Handy (Sid James) opens the Helping Hands agency. With his loyal secretary Miss Cooling (Esma Cannon), the agency's seven employees tackle all sorts of jobs--from clothes model, chimp-walker, bouncer, and bird-minder. This is one of the early Carry-On films, so the film's humour is not as bawdy as some of the films from the later 60s and 70s. The good thing about "Carry-On Regardless" is the cast line up:

3-0 out of 5 stars Carbon copy Bond
The James Bond craze of the 1960s sent studios scurrying to secure the rights to other literary secret agents and detectives, and alter them to fit the successful 007 formula. Novelist H. C. McNeile's creation "Bulldog Drummond" was showcased in numerous mystery films in the '20s and '30s; for this 1966 spy movie, however, the urbane sleuth was reconfigured into a carbon copy of Bond.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bond copy
This is one of several movies that cashed in on the Bond craze. This particular one is the worst of the copies. The low budget limits the exotic location shots and make the story very slow and dragging. There are none of the artistic photographic angles and effects common in the Bond films. It is about an insurance investigator who is looking into organized crime. The plot is totally devoid of any imagination or surprises. The one unusual feature is that some of the gratuitous violence is done by women who appear to be bored with their violent work. The women and their clothes were very flashy by standards of 40 years ago, but will have no romantic effects on healthy men of today.Notice how the women piled their hair on top of their head and then wrapped a turban around it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining But Not in the Same League as Bond
"Deadlier Than the Male" certainly copies the James Bond movie formula--and star Richard Johnson, reputedly once considered for the role, looks like a cross between Sean Connery and Martin Landau. Ultimately, the film lacks enough stylish excitement to be a true Bond contender, though its jazzy score and myriad locations are on par with many 1960s adventures. It may even remind some viewers a bit visually of Alfred Hitchcock's 1955 film, "To Catch a Thief." Johnson plays Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, a well-tailored investigator who drives an expensive car, lives in a swinging but upscale London flat, and beds every woman he's interested in. If that sounds like Bond, the resemblance is understandable; Ian Fleming was likely inspired by the fictional Bulldog Drummond mysteries that preceded the Bond books. His quarry here is a two-woman assassination squad (luscious Elke Sommer and kooky Sylva Koscina) that is brutally knocking off contenders for a multi-million-dollar oil deal. Who is really behind the shady goings-on probably won't surprise you, but some of the kinky violence might, even if much here is tame by contemporary standards and already familiar to "The Avengers" fans. "Deadlier Than the Male" works best when it lets the assassins be cold-blooded and Johnson relax and be naturally smooth (as he was in "The Haunting" and numerous other films); it breaks down with its frequently desert-dry, sometimes racist humor and often lethargic, oddly-edited action sequences. Though a climax on a human-sized chessboard is visually impressive, trying to make complete sense of how and why the characters react to it might challenge you. Perhaps the biggest flaw, though, is that despite being suave and handsome, Johnson fails to bring sparks to the romantic scenes; as a female friend told me, "Now I see why he didn't get Bond." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Most Charming In The Series
Carry On Cruising (1962) saw the series transferred into colour but the one thing missing from this is the large number of regulars absent from it - theres no Charles Hawtrey, Joan Sims or Hattie Jaques. Yet surprisingly this does emerge as an enjoyable, entertaining entry in the long-running series. The action of course is set aboard a Mediterranean cruise liner (well actually it was all filmed at PineWood Studios) with the inept and typically incompentent crew under the strict command of the serious and uptight Captain Crowther, who is played marvelously by Sid James. Things all come to a climax when the crew plan a surprise party for the captain who is celebrating his tenth year at sea. This was Norman Hudis's last script for the series, which is certainly on top form throughout. Amongst the cast include Kenneth Williams, Kenneth Connor (in a fairly typical role), Dilys Laye (taking the role that was origanally written for Joan Sims), Liz Frazer, Lance Percival as a hopelessly sea-sick chef and loveable eccentric Esma Cannon.
3-0 out of 5 stars THE FIRST CARRY ON TO BE MADE IN COLOUR
Fun and games aboard a Mediterranean cruise liner with the group of passengers and crew members under the command of the strict, no nonsense Captain Crowther (marvelously played by SID JAMES). This was the first entry in the series to be made in colour. There are many laughs along the way although is slightly handicapped by the absence of most of the regulars. Only SID JAMES, KENNETH WILLIAMS and KENNETH CONNOR, the series "official" regulars are present. DILYS LAYE takes on a part origanally written for JOAN SIMS (who was unable to take the part due to illness). LIZ FRAZER (who appeared in many of the early entries) and ESMA CANNON are also on view as well as LANCE PERCIVAL as a hopelessly sea sick chef. On the whole though a good comedy, defintley worth a look.

3-0 out of 5 stars Standard early Carry-on fare.
Although the trend is to rate the earlier Carry On's such as this 1962 release more favourably than the later entries I cannot agree with this. In my view, the comic stars reached their peak with films such as Carry On Upthe Khyber and Carry On Again Doctor. Sid James is fine here as the ship'scaptain (although a bit wooden in comparison to later work) and Dilys Layeand Lance Percivial are also competent. The best performance comes fromKenneth Williams, the most talented team member. To its credit, the filmhas beautiful colour and some solid laughs. Not the best of eventhe earlyCarry On's (Constable & Nurse are better) although I'm sure fans willenjoy it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Main Title Audio Presentation from M-G-M..otherwise, FINE !
This film gets 3 stars as I enjoyed this classy, slow-paced thriller and the good cast. Mostly, though, my biggest pleasure was Georges Delerue's melancholy music score, particularly at the end and in the main title credits.Unfortunately this print has parts of the title music GARBLED -- UNFORGIVEABLE since this score was never released commercially and cannot be savoured anywhere except on this DVD.Thumbs down to M-G-M for their careless audio presentation (fortunately I have a CD-R of the main title music from a friend in Australia, where the film was known as NOBODY RUNS FOREVER.)Couldn't M-G-M get a print from there??

4-0 out of 5 stars Better Than Average Political Thriller, With Murder Added
This is a political thriller that adds an old murder to the mix to create a movie that's entertaining but not quite as good as I'd hoped for. Aussie cop Scobie Malone (Rod Taylor) is sent to London to arrest and bring back for trial the Australian High Commissioner Sir James Quentin (Christopher Plummer), who is in the midst of crucial negotiations with some third world countries. Malone's boss believes there is now enough evidence against Sir James to pin on him the murder of his first wife which happened several years ago. When Malone arrives in London, however, he finds Sir James to be the target of assassins who are determined to see the negotiations fail. At the same time, he comes to believe that it's possible Sir James wasn't the murderer after all. Sir James pleads for time to complete the negotiations and Malone agrees, but then finds himself in the position of having to protect Sir James from the assassins.

To start with, since the previous reviewer asked - the cast includes:
