3-0 out of 5 stars It's the most won-der-ful time... in your life!
Like many here my review reflects the dvd as a purchase and not only the "movie". I was shocked to see my widescreen smile go to a fullscreen frown in minutes. I then read the back of the box and realized the error of MGM's ways. Had I took the time to read this in the store I doubt I would have bought it, though in hindsight who knows when another issue will be made, I'll likely ditch this and get that when it does. The best part about this release (and most important) is the sound anyway, and WOW they squeeze a lot of mileage out of Stereo Surround! I then rechecked the box to see if this was 5.1 and it wasn't but man oh man you'd never guess it twasn't! The picture is grainy on certain shots, others it is clear and bright, and it bothers me there ain't a whisker of an extra, but I guess that's for the "special edition". 2/5
5-0 out of 5 stars A Glorious Experience!
Tom Sawyer is a rascally young boy doing his best to grow-up carefree and mischievous on the banks of the Mississippi River in Hannibal, Missouri. He lives with his frustrated Aunt Polly and her children, goody-goody Sid, who has it in for Tom, and lovely Mary, who is Tom's only supporter when he gets himself into trouble. Tom's best friend is Huckleberry Finn, an outsider who lives off the land and water and has no one to look after him. The two boys love to fish, go swimming, play pirates on the river, and hang out with their pal, Muff Potter, the friendly town drunk. The days pass pretty much regularly like that for Tom, Huck, and their friends. That is, until two people shake up their world. One is a sweet little girl named Becky Thatcher, the daughter of the new judge in town. When Tom meets Becky, it's love at first sight. Unfortunately, the other disruption in the lives of Tom and Huck is not quite as benign. The menacing figure known as Injun Joe makes more than a little trouble for the boys when they witness him murdering the town doctor one night in the graveyard and putting the blame on poor Muff Potter! It suddenly becomes Tom's difficult decision of whether or not to break his pact of secrecy with Huck and save their innocent, drunken friend from the gallows!
4-0 out of 5 stars Good family film
I remember watching this when I was a young boy. The next day I told my mother that I wanted to paint a fence, so she did the best she could: she got some old boards and some white paint and I took it from there.

I couldn't find this movie anywhere and I finally found it on Amazon. This movie is one of my all time favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality
This is a movie that I saw when I was a kid of 8 and always wanted to have in my collection. A few years ago it was released on DVD but all the comments that I've read about it said that the quality of the image was very poor and that would be better to have it taped on a VCR from a TV broadcast. It seems that they even stopped producing/selling it.

Rod Serling short stories--the classic TV movie that launched the series.Roddy is excellent in story in which graveyard paintings come to life!
5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome To The Night Gallery
Those opening words by writer, host and all round creative genius Rod Serling paved the way for viewers to enjoy many intriguing stories of mystery, mayhem and the supernatural during the three year run of the classic series "Night Gallery". A brain child of Serling who had earlier been responsible for the creation of one of televisions most innovative and best remembered series in the classic "The Twilight Zone","Night Gallery was a regular anthology series on NBC that told stories of macabre happenings with surreal characters in often out of this world situations. This particular TV movie was the original pilot for the series and aired in 1969. It contains three individual stories and was adapted by Rod Serling from his own short story collection titled "The Season to be Wary". While varying in quality with the third story by far the weakest, all are rich in suspense and detail with stories one and two boasting top flight guest stars in engrossing teleplays.5-0 out of 5 stars Flashforward: 1969-1972

5-0 out of 5 stars "There is a beast in man that should be exercised, not exorcised."
An Englishman named 'Montgomery' is stranded with a lost companion on a deserted tropical island where he is rescued by Dr. Moreau, a genius in genetics, pursuing altruistic medical miracles to alleviate mankind from incurable maladies, although his methods are questioned, but it is maintained that the ends justify the means. He continues to make strides to this effect until perfidiously antagonistic organisms deem to thwart his noble efforts, who eventually become subjects themselves for his experiments, thus contributing far more to his vision rather than merely complaining about it.
4-0 out of 5 stars When the result is even major than the sum of its parts!
Burt Lancaster gave a terrific performance as the ambitious Dr.Moreau who pretends to create anew race; the "humanimals" , half beats, half man and the inexpressive Michael Yoprk as the good guy who will intend by all his means to avoid the prolongation of this horrid nightmare.
2-0 out of 5 stars Use in the Classroom
I teach 9th grade English, and after reading Wells's "The Island of Dr. Moreau" in my English I class, I chose to have my students watch the 1996 remake rather than this version.Although both movies greatly deviate from Wells's story, the 1977 version would have bored my students to tears. If you intend to show a movie version of this novel, then I would choose the 1996 version since it is faster-paced and more dramatic.Plus, Val Kilmer plays a very convincing Montgomery. The redeeming quality of this 1977 version is the cave scene during which the Beast People teach Braddock "The Law," though your students will probably be asleep by the time that scene occurs. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Unoriginal Melodrama Boosted By Strong Performances.
This sentimentally romantic melodrama produced for television possesses many of the tiresome earmarks of films that are made for that medium, as evidenced throughout the film, but additionally offers more substance than one may expect from its largely hackneyed script. The opening is unpromising, at a "singles bar" where Franny (Kate Jackson) and Josh (Tim Matheson), accompanied by their respective closest friends who have persuaded them to be there, naturally meet and find each other irresistible despite their inner calls of caution.Frannie carries emotional wounds following a recently ended six-year love affair with her former employer, whereas Josh has become bored with short-term liaisons as this one with Frannie appears to be after a single night's non-carnal visit by her to his apartment.Frannie begins work for a new company immediately after the one-evening tentative fling, as art director for a book publishing firm, where she discovers that Josh also works there, as an editor, thereby leading into a chain of troublous situations for each since they also have begun an amourous relationship.Despite patchy moments within the storyline, Don Taylor, frequently a director of films targeted for television audiences, moves the action along smartly, clearly emphasizing the relationship between the new lovers, serving thus to consistently reinforce narrative flow.Taylor additionally helps the film here by permitting the talented feature players to create their roles and to ad lib when appropriate.Although there can be no mystery to viewers regarding the eventual fate of the lovers' union, both actors inject increased interest into their roles by their convincing turns, Jackson gaining the acting laurels through her fine technique, therewith mining rather predictable lines for their emotional substance. An ancillary character in the film, and never looking better, is the City of Chicago, playing as itself and shot with interesting detail, it being the setting for the scenario and linked to the plotline through referential dialogue, in addition to frequent visual citations. The only major drawback to the film is its trite scoring, schematically contrived for its television pedigree, including planned interims to allow advertising, but notwithstanding this tiresome obviousness, it does not seriously damage the picture's rhythm.Editing for both sound and visuals is ably accomplished and benefits Taylor's pacing at the helm of a small budgeted film that yet enjoys generally solid production values. The principal theme for the piece is, on the surface, the hoary problem of romantic involvement between co-workers, but character development generated by the leads adds trim to that particular motif. There is no lack of clever gambits to be found within the plotting and a defined conclusion for the Josh/Franny liaison hinges upon his distrust of close involvement in competition with her need for just exactly that, with these emotional states as depicted by Jackson and Matheson eventually being responsible for lifting the film above a state at which it would normally be expected to settle.

4-0 out of 5 stars He's Baaack!
Omen II is the return of Damien, 7 years after his dad attempted to kill him. This begins the story of Damien and how Damien learns about his destiny as the Antichrist. This movie is a terrific sequel to one of the best horror movies ever. The music score in this movie is once again great and makes some scenes even more scary. Omen II is really a good movie and is worth it.

4-0 out of 5 stars DAMIEN...A LITTLE OLDER...A LITTLE WISER...
This sequel, released two years after the blockbuster success of "The Omen", is itself a stylish thriller. Featuring an excellent cast, it attempts to continue the momentum of the original. While having some shortcomings, the film, nonetheless, manages to entertain and shock. This is due in large part to its excellent cast and another chilling musical score by Jerry Goldsmith that is used to great effect.

3-0 out of 5 stars Paradox of the Apes
Following the cataclysmic finale of Beneath the Planet of the Apes, there was only one logical direction for the series to go---> back to the future. The result is an illogically conceived and satirical prequel that will amuse and delight and ultimately devastate with its bleak Shakesperean tragedy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Poor Beginning but a good story nonetheless
Once you get past the preposturous and serious flawed opening of the movie, you have a great story(in the first film we saw the damaged ship sink in the water. This film supposes that Cornelious and Zira somehow retrieved the ship and repaired it and were able to fly it back through time. All this was done in the short time from when Brent left their camp in the second film till he reached the mutant camp, which at most was a day). This was probably the best acting for Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter in the series. The movie makes us question the scientific use of animals in research.

1-0 out of 5 stars The budget got smaller and it shows
The third film, "Escape..." was a complete joke. They must have made this on a shoe-string budget because there were no special effects and they probably used the masks from the first two films. The plot was idiotic and I weep at thought of this nonsense. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining and sad
This film is highly entertaining because it deals with an actor that is kind of a legend, Erroll Flynn. He is at once a success and particularly with women, especially young women, if not teenagers and girls, with his films. He marries a French actress who was also very popular. She more or less forces him into marrying her, but she cannot cope with his success and feels cheated and rejected. So she gets into a decaying approach of her own life. When she gets pregnant she decides to ask for a divorce, bringing together what could be a great joy with what is a great drama. She has never been able to cope with the success of her own husband that she married within this own success. Maybe she was hoping to make him her devotee, her "slave" and that shows she had not understood what the life of a popular actor is. The sad point of the film, and what I have just told is sad enough, is that Erroll Flynn is more or less broken in his career by these events and he loses his art, his talent, and little by little delves into marginal compensations such as alcohol and sex. This leads to a totally unfair accusation of rape. He is acquitted by a court but the stain will remain forever and he will be finished in his career, in his life, in his psyche even. Hollywood is often enough a long and dangerous pilgrimage to hell more often than to heavens.5-0 out of 5 stars Until they release a better version, this one will do
I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and until I see a better rendition, I will watch it again and again .If nothing else, the public gets a glimpse of Mr Flynn as his naughty best. Duncan Regehr did well as Flynn, but nobody could be Flynn but Flynn. This should be released on DVD!

5-0 out of 5 stars 'What A Show'!'
"The Big Valley" has been my favorite TV show for over thirty years. Although I had seen it from time to time when it was running in prime time, it was'nt until 1973, when it was shown locally, that I really got into it. Barbara Stanwyck was one of those rare golden age actresses who grew more beautiful with the passage of time. As Victoria Barkley, she was playing a woman close to her heart, and mine. Linda Evans, Richard Long, Peter Breck and Lee Majors were perfect support. And those guest stars! to name a few, Anne Baxter, Susan Strasberg, James Whitmore, Julie Harris, Andrew Duggan, John Anderson, Jeanne Cooper, Diane Baker, James Gregory..... I want so much to have the complete series on DVD. I have'nt even seen the episodes in their complete and original form, thanks to the butchering they endured for more commercials. In any form, however, this show is the BEST! [phillindholm]

5-0 out of 5 stars Should've Been Bigger Than Bonanza!
The only reason why I don't buy "Legend Of A General" is because I already have it on tape!If I didn't, you better believe I'd snatch it up in a second!"The Big Valley" is my absolute favortie tv western of all time!("Dr. Quinn" comes in at a close second.)5-0 out of 5 stars THE BARKLEY SAGA
Every single episode of this fantastic western series should be available on video! I've met many people who, like myself, are devoted fans of this classic show which originally aired from 1965-1969. There were 112 hour-long episodes of this western filmed and it remains my very favourite show of all-time. As Victoria Barkley, Barbara Stanwyck is nothing less than sensational in her acting technique; as the widow Barkley, she is a curious combination of being both tough and gracious - but above all, Stanwyck was an incredibly NATURAL actress; she won an Emmy for her portrayal in 1966 (she was nominated the remaining three years of the show's run, plus she won other awards such as the Photoplay Medal) and her playing of the proud matriarch has practically made her Victoria Barkley a cult figure. Richard Long is fine as Jarrod, the level-headed eldest lawyer son - while never a great actor by any means, Long had an intensely likeable personna about him. Nick, the tough, egotistical son is played with neccesary verve by Peter Breck and Audra as played by astonishingly beautiful Linda Evans made many a male baby-boomer swoon (I was one of them!). NIGHT OF THE WOLF is a classic episode which lingers in the memory: Nick gets bitten by a rabid wolf and tries to find his lost love, golden-haired Jeannie before he dies; he finds she died from typhoid. Nancy Olson and Ronny Howard play the widowed mother and son who take Nick in and the conclusion is both happy and sad. Stanwyck was such a striking presence in this show (which was envied by many of her peers and was a huge personal triumph) that entire episodes are literally showcases for her acting talent. The youngest son, Eugene (played by the now-forgotton Charles Briles) was mysteriously written out of the show after the first season. The public's very favourite character, however was HEATH (the half-breed b------- from Strawberry) as played by Lee Majors! The rest of the cast was actually peeved and annoyed due to the fact that more stories centered around Heath, and Majors received more fan mail than any other cast member! The guest stars in this terrific western included Julie Harris, Susan Oliver, Colleen Dewhurst (she was terrific), Milton Berle(!), Robert Goulet(!), Pernell Roberts, Cloris Leachman, Buddy Hackett, Adam West, Virginia Christine, among many others. James Gregory worked well with Stanwyck and he was a frequent co-star. The stories were excellently written, the characters were colourful and genuine. The beautifully colourful scenery, the musical score by George Duning (which included the pretty little theme heard at the beginning of many an episode entitled A FUTURE LEFT BEHIND) are all first-rate. If someone doesn't do a book on THE BIG VALLEY..... maybe I WILL!! ... Read more

I remember watching this movie on TV when I was a kid. When I found it while surfing (no pun intended) through the DVD section of Amazon.com I bought it.What a sentimental blast from the past!Three fabulous looking hunks, Fabian, Tab Hunter and Peter Brown, use their winter break from college to spend one last time together in Hawaii to surf Waimea, before they all head in different directions, due to issues explained later on in the movie. By the first evening they all meet the perfect girl who will eventually help them deal with and solve their issues while sitting prettily on the beach in the most fabulous bikinis, with hair that barely moves in the wind, even when they stand up to wave at their beautifully physiqued, half naked, wet men. Yummy! Responsible Tab meets obligation-ridden Dolores Hart. A curiously blond over-cautious Peter meets curiously dark haired free spirited Barbara Eden. Untrusting, angry Fabian meets cautiously-trusting, sweet, Shelly Fabares, who in my book wins the award for best bikini - a while lace number that doesn't look like it would survive a puddle spashing, nevermind a dousing from the Wild Surf. While on the surface (again no pun intended) there is a fraternal feeling of comraderie and respect between the surfers, below the surface there is an undertow (I'm not going to apologize for this pun) of serious competition, as the winner of the contest, no only becomes known as the best surfer, but earns enough money to remain job free for a year to practice for the following year's competition - a dream come true for all of them. The panoramic surfing scenes, accompanied by hawaiian drum beats, are actual films of real surfers and are fantastic, and there are plenty of them. The close ups, while the talking scenes were filmed, are shot while the guys sit on the boards in water where I've seen bigger waves in my son's wading pool.I read in Tab Hunter's book recently, that the close ups of them "riding the waves" were filmed while they were kneeling in red rider wagons, after being spashed with buckets of water. However, it works well enough and is a lot of fun to see.In this movie, the surf is the star, and is not like those dopey Annette Funicello/Frankie Avalon movies where surfing is an after thought. The romances are sweet, there's comedy, drama, beautiful scenery and everybody's good looking - so hush little baby - don't you cry!I highly recommend this movie for a little nostalgic fun, if nothing else.

5-0 out of 5 stars "RIDE THE WILD SURF" SHOOTS THE CURL
A fun "sun and surf" flick of the mid 60's - this is certainly one of the better offerings of that genre. With a good cast that includes Tab Hunter, Shelley Fabares and Fabian, this entertaining flick moves well, contains some fairly innocuous love scenes, and actually has some nice surfing footage.Perhaps not surprisingly, it has a good message for teens and it's fun to watch too.The title song was actually a hit tune as well - cute movie. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Couldn't find it anywhere
