5-0 out of 5 stars Adventure
Story-telling at its best. Takes you back to life near the Mississippi river, before the Civil War, for a story of boyhood adventure. Plenty of humor. This 1938 color version, is the best version; worth seeing even if you have seen others.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, terrible DVD format
I had been looking for this movie for, literally, decades when I found it on Amazon.com. This is one of the greatest, most memorable, movies of my childhood. Although the dialog and production are very 30's and very dated now, Mark Twain's timeless writing and the believability of the prime actors make this movie one of the unforgettables. Unfortunately, this great American classic is produced overseas and delivered in Region 2 format on DVD. That means Americans can't view it, unless, of course, they have a universal player. But, only the geeks own those or know how to jimmy theirs. I excitedly bought this DVD from Caiman and found out too late. The picture of the product clearly shows a "triangle U" in the lower right corner, which means it's Universal format. The DVD itself is labeled "globe 0" which means it should play on any player worldwide. But, it would play on only 1 of my 3 players. Caiman insisted it was Region 2 and that it was my problem. After much arguing with them I had to escalate to a manager to get my money back by pointing out the "triangle U" in the picture. I sent a report to Amazon.com but they were no help. An American company needs to get on the ball with this one and produce it for Region 1, or true Universal format. It's Mark Twain, for crying out loud!!

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD Format Disappointment
This classic version of Tom Sawyer is by far the best that has been made. However, I was very disappointed when we received the DVD that it was in PAL format.Luckily we were able to play it on our computer. Why is an American story, filmed by an American company, sold in a format for Europeans? Why couldn't this be in the regular DVD format that all the other movies are? ... 5-0 out of 5 stars THE DUOS BEST FILM YET!
Made in 1953, The Caddy was the best Martin & Lewis film to date, showing off both men's talents to the best of their ability.Again there isn't whole lot of plot to their films, merely plot elements that frame the two star's unique talents. This time Jerry is caddy Harvey Miller to Dean's Joe Anthony, who is a pro golfer.Well, Harvey of course causes utter havok on the golf course, annoying everyone, including pro golfers Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, and Byron Nelson, playing themselves.Utter craziness 30 years before the next great golf movie, "Caddyshack" would come along.
4-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Martin/Lewis
This is definitely one of their top movies together. This and The Stooge are right there together. Here is classic Lewis/Martin humor.Good, clean fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining Golf the Comic Italian Way

3-0 out of 5 stars The Most Memorable of His Films-you know-the One with "Jocelyn Lane"
Although the Elvis formula films were pretty much the same when they were released, two factors made some significantly more appealing and memorable than others; the actress playing his love interest and the songs that were incorporated into the production.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's Elvis and it's in color! Were you expecting "West Side Story"?
A very funny film. The soundtrack was composed of old songs from earlier Elvis LPs (to keep the film's budget at a minimum). Elvis looks great and Jocelyn Lane looks incredible. In my opinion (along with many others), Jocelyn was the prettiest costar Elvis ever had. Julie Adams is very attractive as the "older" woman. Practically all of the women in the film are hot (and there are loads of groovy gals). In fact--although not intending to be--"Tickle Me" remains one of the best children's pictures ever. I certainly couldn't get enough of it when it played at the local theater when I was in grade school. I went back to see it again five times! What can I say? Puberty calling! [filmfactsman]

4-0 out of 5 stars Mario and Kathryn in rare form
THE TOAST OF NEW ORLEANS is a beautifully-filmed musical with Kathryn Grayson and Mario Lanza perfectly-paired as two warring opera performers.
4-0 out of 5 stars JUAN SULLIVAN
What a match!Grayson, the beautiful physiognomy, clothes-model, and concert-quality singer was the best of her time (see her in "Kiss Me Kate"); and Mario has a magnificent voice. It was unfortunate that Mario was too out-of-condition to play "The Student Prince".Instead, the role went to Edmund Purdom. Also, Mario was made for the musical Carousel!None sings "If I Loved You" so well.
4-0 out of 5 stars a melodious feast for Lanza fans
Mario Lanza fans will love this musical souffle which was released a year before "The Great Caruso"; Lanza is in top form and even dances with a young Rita Moreno, and hardly five minutes goes by in the film without a song. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Broadway Melody of 1940
Classic Fred Astaire, romantic triangle with George Murphy and the extraordinary Eleanor Powell, fabulous dances, cinematic artistry in B&W, something special, ends with Astaire and Powell dancing to Begin the Beguine, will take your breath away, rocket your spirit, smiles, smiles, smiles!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time Astaire favorites...
As far as I'm concerned, no one -but no one- tops Fred Astaire in dance. But that's not all he did well musically. In fact, his dancing was so superb and was so heralded by his peers and the public that it seems to have blinded everyone's eyes to his underappreciated abilities as a vocalist. The man was not a shabby singer. Most of the renowned songwriters of his day (Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern, the Gershwins)preferred to write lyrics and tunes specifically for Mr. Astaire because of his knack for phrasing and personalising a song. And let's not forget how capably the man performed with various musical instruments (drums, piano, accordion...).
4-0 out of 5 stars The Sublime and the Ridiculous
Most of this movie is terrible, but who's complaining? The epically long "Begin the Beguine" is the climax of the movie & it makes the whole mess worthwhile. The last 11 minutes of this movie are mind-blowingly great -- absolute perfection. The sets, the cinematography, the costumes, the orchestrations & the extraordinary routine itself -- everything combines to make "Begin the Beguine" the most ravishing, glamorous black & white production number ever put on film. It's Hollywood at its apogee, the quintessence of silver screen glamor.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST OF ALL ELVIS FILMS!
This movie has it all -- Michelle Carey, Elvis, changing times, psychedelic sequences (check out the "Edge of Reality" bit -- the girls "morph" *years* before the technology was invented!), taboo subjects (sex, etc.), and the original version of "A Little Less Conversation." It is a true romantic comedy; had it never been made with Elvis, and had been shot this year with Ben Afleck and Cameraon Diaz, it would be a smash hit! Actually, it was a pretty big hit in its own time, even though it was one of Elvis's last three or four movies. This film needs to be released on DVD soon! Especially wonderful is the widescreen version that airs on TNT every now and then. Michelle Carey was incredible -- I wish she was still around. The songs are great (all 4 of them), and this movie, written by the same dude that wrote "Private Lessons" (1981), rises above the rest of the awful schlock that Elvis concerned himself with for the majority of the sixties. Relax, check it out, and have a good time.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Presley's BEST!
This film is very in tune with the 1960's and even has an acid-influenced Elvis-dream sequence!Elvis is very relaxed in the role and seems to actually enjoy it.He gets to be a cool photographer with a cool dune buggy and a great big dog for a pet. This is fast-paced, not slow, like some other reviewers have said...Elvis fans will be surprisingly pleased by this very-late-stage film.I think he made only 1 or 2 others after this one.I bought it for the psychedelic acid-dream sequence and ended up really enjoying the whole movie and I'm wasn't even a hardcore Elvis fan.(But now I am!)

5-0 out of 5 stars A true King of a Movie!
A perfect movie that never fails to make me smile. The scenery is gorgeous, the girls are gorgeous and Elvis is gorgeous so what more can you ask for? Best of all, you can watch it with the whole family without ever having to worry about hustling the kids out of the room due to inappropriate content. Too bad Hollywood stopped making films like this. Elvis can look down and be proud that he made quality family films that have stood the test of time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! Great Pic!
This film rates 5 stars as a gorgeous movie musical, as a well-made film in and of itself, as a piece of sixties surf-and-sand nostalgia, as an Elvis vehicle, and as an Hawaiian "picture book" of sorts. It's young, it's fun, it's sunny and upbeat. You won't be disappointed.

Spencer Tracy won an Oscar for his portrayal of Father Flanagan, who opens Boys Town and dedicates himself to helping juvenile delinquents go straight. Mickey Rooney plays one of the tougher kids, figuring out early on that Flanagan is nobody's fool. Warmhearted and inspiring, the film's inevitable sentimentality is nicely cut by Tracy's performance and a smart script by Eleanore Griffin and Dore Schary (who also won Oscars). A good film for all ages, directed by Norman Taurog (Read more

I WAS IN A SIMILAR SITUATION AS THIS SHOW [A CATHOLIC ENVIREMENT] AND HAVE SEEN BOTH THIS SHOW AND 'MEN OF BOYS TOWN'. THIS IS THE REASON I GOT THESE SHOW [BOTH ON ONE DVD].IT IS A GOOD DEAL FOR THE MONEY.ONE OF THE FUNNIEST PARTS WAS WHEN MO MADE WHITEY LOOK LIKE AL JOLSON AND HOW EVERYONE LAUGHED AT HIM DURING THE ROW CALL.GENE REYNOLDS PLAYED TONY PONESSA [ALSO STARRED IN 'THEY SHALL HAVE MUSIC'] WAS PERFECT FOR THE PART.UNLIKE TED MARTLEY [MEN OF BOYS TOWN] WHO CRIED FOR ATTENTION TONY PREFERRED TO DO THING FOR HIMSELF AND NOT DEPEND ON OTHERS FOR ANYTHING.IN SOME WAYS HE AND TED MARTLEY WERE ALIKE. THESE SHOWS SURE TAKES ME BACK TO THOSE DAYS WHEN I WAS RAISED IN A CATHOLIC ORPHANAGE WHERE I SAW BOTH OF THESE SHOWS.
5-0 out of 5 stars Boys Town
I have seen this movie in the past on TV and am familiar with the story line. I have also been to Visit Boys Town Since I have family in Omaha Nebraska. I would say if anyone is considering buying this movie, Do. Spencer Tracy makes a good Father flanigan (the Priest who starts up Boys Town) in this movie and Micky Rooney who plays a hoddlem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two great actors in a great movie
"Boys Town" stars two of the greatest actors of the golden era of Hollywood, Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy, and their parts in this movie are among their best roles."Boys Town" doesn't have quite as close a connection to Christmas as the other two titles in the Classic Holiday Collection (there's one scene set on the holiday), but this true story of a priest who builds a boarding school for troubled youth is one that will warm your heart.Tracy plays Father Flanagan, a kind, socially conscious priest who can be tough when he needs to be, and Mickey Rooney displays his wide-ranging acting talent (from tough talk to tears) as one of the neglected boys whom Flanagan sets on the right path.

The plot is a hokey whitewash of the careers of Richard Rodgers andLorenz Hart, with characters talking in stilted phrases ("Gee, Larry, that's marvelous, really and truly") and complexities reduced to ground zero. 5-0 out of 5 stars Words and Music
I have been waiting for years for "Words and Music"(1948) to be released on DVD. I have both the sound track (CD) and the movie (VHS) in my collection. I would like to have the DVD of this, as it is a matter of time, before my VHS collection is obsolete. The movie is light on true events in Hart's life (sexual preference), but the music and stage productions are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars TURNER/MGM/WARNER EMBARRASMENT!
This was released on VHS ages ago and its about time Warner re-releases it as a re-mastered Dolby Digital masterpiece that it deserves and that they can and have done so beautifully !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb Musical - Everyone shines!
Words & Music was originally released in 1948 and is a very colourful, beautifully filmed musical from MGM. The film includes a lot of superb performances! Despite the fact that the film is only very loosly based on the lives of Rogers and Hart, this film is a must have for all Musical collectors and fans of all the stars involved.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mario excels inhis first movie
I grew up listening to Mario Lanza on radio & seeing his movies, but I had never seen his first movie, That Midnight Kiss. What a joy to watch and hear him, as well as Kathyrn Grayson. He was so young, and his weight the best I've ever seen of him.Guess he was born with natural acting talent as well as beauty of voice, because I saw no flaws in his acting--only perfect timing, expression of feeling, and enthusiasm (and, of course, that fabulous voice).A really sweet, romantic movie.Kathryn Grayson also was a favorite of mine at that time--so pretty, with a delightful voice.I think this is my favorite of his movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Kiss That Changed History
Mario Lanza and Kathryn Grayson speak words of love to each other and to their fans in this Technicolor delight from MGM's Pasternak unit. The Pasternak unit had more freakish talent assigned to it than the Freed unit (though there was in actual practice quite a bit of back and forth)--suffice it to say that you don't see movies teaming Mario Lanza with Judy Garland--ever wonder why not?Freed had Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Lena Horne; Pasternak had Esther Williams, Red Skelton, Jane Powell.Obviously both men made boatloads of money for their mother studio, but I think it's time for a Pasternak revival, for his pictures are by far the most fun, even though they might not be classy per se.
1-0 out of 5 stars That Midnight Kiss
Don't really know if I liked it or not, as I was never able to watch it, due to the fact that the VHS tape was so VERY POOR in quality.Noise over the sound - streaks across the picture. It was totally unwatchable.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pardners
"Pardners" has always been my favorite Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis movie. The combination of this famous team's humor and song, along with a western setting make for an enjoyable time. Some excellent character actors in supporting roles, including Jeff Murrow, add to the western action. I'm glad others have commented on the closing where Dean and Jerry speak directly to the audience about continuing to come and see their films. I saw this in a theater just months before their famous breakup and the irony has stayed with me. Optimist that I am, I kept hoping for M & L to reunite for more films. Never happened, but thankfully we have this and other Martin & Lewis films on tape and hopefully one day, restored on DVDs.
3-0 out of 5 stars Dean and Jerry on the Range
"Pardners" (1956) was Martin and Lewis' next-to-last film and it remains among their best. A loose remake of Bing Crosby's "Rhythm on the Range" (1936), this breezy western comedy has the duo in good form, with a strong supporting cast featuring Agnes Moorehead and Lon Chaney Jr. Unlike "Hollywood or Bust" (the team's farewell appearance), Dean and Jerry were on speaking terms during the production and their on-screen rapport is evident from beginning to end. One of the film's most memorable (and ironic) scenes has Martin and Lewis taking aim at the final credits, while assuring their fans that they will continue to make beautiful cinema together. It didn't turn out that way, but you have to admire Dean and Jerry for breaking up at the height of their phenomenal success -- rather than face the downhill trajectory that greeted most comedy teams.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of Martin & Lewis
This video is hard to find, except through Amazon.Worth the price. Soundtrack is one of the better ones, if you can find it, as well. Dean Martin, for western fans, was a very good gun handler (as well as a finesinger) and you get a glimpse of hisskill in this flick.I agree withthe previous reviewer, the end credits are fun to watch. As always, theplot of M & L movies are far-reaching, but if you are watching a M& L movie for the plot, go back to reading Webster's Dictionary.Ifyou half-way like M & L, half-way like comedies or half-way likewesterns, you'll enjoy this movie. Buy it before it's so far out-of-printthat you'll never find it. Enjoy. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars MEDIOCRE CANTOR COMEDY.
Long considered the weakest of Cantor's six thirties films for Samuel Goldwyn, it was also the their final team effort. Mediocre though it may be, it still has enough going for it to merit the attention of fans of either Cantor or Ethel Merman. In this big-budgeted 1936 outing, the spineless Eddie Pink (!) is continuously bothered by bullies whiles he runs a handy man shop at Millwood University. A lonely milquetoast, his only protector is the kindly but dense Butch Carson (Gordon Jones). Eddie subscribes via mail order, a character-building course which promises to turn him from a mouse to a man by giving him a forceful personality. Eddie later gets involved with crooks, an amusement park & a vivacious torch singer named Joyce Lennox (Ethel Merman, in fine form)...Based upon a novel by Clarence Buddington Kelland which first appeared in the SATURDAY EVENING POST in 1935, the working titles for this fair comedy were DREAMLAND & SHOOT THE CHUTES. Amazingly, this film cost between 1.5 & 2 million dollars to produce. Goldwyn rented "The Cyclone Racer", a roller coaster in Long Beach, Ca. for use in the chase sequences. The role of Copple was originally to have been played by character actor Sam Hardy. After he died following and emergency operation, William Frawley was borrowed from Paramount. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The promise of "One Hundred Beautiful Girls on Horseback" and a personalappearance by the Tommy Dorsey orchestra are among the enticements of this 1943MGM musical, a typical installment in the Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland let's-put-on-a-show genre. Not typical is the quality of the songbook, which trots outsome sublime George and Ira Gershwin tunes: "Embraceable You," "FascinatingRhythm," and a meltingly plaintive Garland solo on "But Not for Me." The plothas rich kid Rooney, energized as usual, sent away to a boys' school in the WildWest as a way of containing his mania (see title). The only gal in town isJudy, the granddaughter of the school's dean. The stars are affectionatelymatched, and musical fans will enjoy the young June Allyson belting out a spunky"Treat Me Rough." Rooney's comedy routine, imitating various radio personalities(including boxing champ Joe Louis), is one of those topical bits that willalmost certainly puzzle viewers today. The director is Norman Taurog, an MGMworkhorse who would later helm many of Elvis Presley's desultory vehicles. BusbyBerkeley staged the rave-up finale to "I Got Rhythm," but the most beguilingproduction number is "Bidin' My Time," sung by Garland and some cowpokes--adroll performance with surrealistic flourishes. 5-0 out of 5 stars DVD NOW !!
These studios need to release these old musicals on DVD now! We want to enjoy them in all their glory and only remastered DVD will allow that! With a sound track like this its a shame that its not on Dolby Re-Mastered Digital !!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Loads of Fun, Great Cast
Girl Crazy is the story of a playboy Danny (Mickey Rooney) from New York whose father has had enough of his behavior. He is sent to an all boy's school out in the west where the boys get up promptly at 5:45, rarely shower, and find solace in riding horses all day. Danny certainly doesn't fit in, but he finds he can't complain too much thanks to the presence of Ginger (Judy Garland), the Dean's grand daughter and one of the prettiest girls he's ever seen. When the school is threatened to close, the two join up to find a way to save it.
4-0 out of 5 stars For this moment ,Judy Garland & Mickey Rooney were
at the pinnacle together, in their best & last musical. Judy stayed up there a little longer & Mickey started his decline. Plot? Irrelevant, except to say that Mickey Rooney's character was... girl crazy. It just took up the time between singing & dancing with Tommy Dorsey's band supplying the sound & the Gershwins the music & lyrics, some of their best remembered is in this movie. Mickey Rooney, Judy Garland, Tommy Dorsey, Ira & George Gershwin.

This was a fun 60's movie that captured the essence of the times. The cast was very well put together, although I had to chuckle at Troy Donahue with his obvious false eyelashes. He was prettier than Stephanie Powers! Tina Cole should have had a bigger part but boy was she ever grounded after those "leather jackets" trashed her parent's house.Jerry Van Dyke looks and acts so much like his brother, Dick, that it was hard to tell the difference. What a comic talent! Connie Stephens did exceptionally well playing the high school kid pretending to be the sophisticated "tease".Her character was very lucky that she didn't get raped by the bad boy of the movie, played by Robert Conrad, in contrast to what happened to Yvette Mimieux's character in "Where the Boys Are".But she manages to come clean in the end and finds true love in hero Stretch (Ty Hardin). Little Billy Mummy was a scene stealer, particularly in the scene where Jerry Van Dyke falls in the pool with the laundry soap and the pool turns into "the biggest alka seltzer I've ever seen".What a hoot!I was a bit disappointed in the underlying message at the end when Stephanie Powers leaves it up to Troy Donahue to make the decision whether to go all the way, in fear that she will lose him to "knowing other girls in that way".I cringe at the thought of the girl letting the boy make that decision for her, then or now.All in all, this was a blast from the past- a great movie to watch again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Weekend for everyone
What a great film. Not as kitchy as the Avalon/Funicello films but lots of fun bits and great characters. Zeme North is just great as the "plain girl" Amanda; Jerry Van Dyke is a terrific goof ball, and Robert Conrad plays the bad rich boy with gusto. Read more

This classic had me rolling in laughter.I am a retired coastie and it brought back some wonderful memories.I could never have a cinnamon roll again without thinking of this movie and two great actors. Walter Mathau as a veteran cook with a drinking problem and Andy Griffin as his understudy and protector is superb casting. The movie gives a small sample of the Coast Guard's entry and roll at sea, at the start of WWII.I can't wait to acquire a new copy on tape. The first time I viewed this was on a Cutter at sea in the Atlantic. The whole crew loved it! ... Editorial Review

Hawaii seems like an afterthought in Elvis's second island outing. Half the musical numbers take place on boats (including the seasick-making title tune) and half in a Trader Vic's-style nightclub, so there's little good use of the exotic locale. There's little use of that lovable dish Stella Stevens, either, who's relegated to "other woman" duty as Elvis courts bland Laurel Goodwin. Goodwin's a rich girl going incognito, while E.P. is a penniless fisherman who dreams of owning his own boat. You finish the plot. The King is in good voice here, although the songs are fairly weak, with some curious flings at calypso and flamenco mixed in. He comes to shoulder-shaking life for "Return to Sender," a sizzling number that shows how his entire being could be possessed by a musical moment. This movie doesn't have enough of those to boost it into the upper tier of Elvis pictures. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Superb Most Entertaining Movie -
Girls!Girls!Girls is definately one of the very best Elvis Presley light-hearted musical drama. My personal all time favorite. The soundtrack is also very excellent especially with great classic songs like Return To Sender, A Girl Like You and Because Of Love. Don't miss this very Superb and most entertaining DVD movie.

3-0 out of 5 stars Lighten up, you uptight critics!
SHEEEESH!! Some of the vicious attack 'reviews' here are ridiculous. No, most Elvis films are not profound cinema, but to attack the man and his fans as hillbillies and fools (in long rambling diatribes) seems odd and extreme...

4-0 out of 5 stars Elvis' talent was never allowed to grow
After reading these reviews that blast Elvis' movies as juvenile and "hillbilly", I had to respond.I was raised on Elvis.Real Elvis. Not just the hype and media, but true stories and family memories as well. There were several times Elvis shined - when he had good directors, and someone managed to keep Col. Tom busy and out of their way so they could make a decent movie.I did notice and tip my hat to the gentleman who not only uses his real name but proves he is an educated viewer. There were several things working against Elvis all of his life and to be able to rise above the crappy direction, cutesy additions and total lack of plotlines proves to me that he could have been so much greater than he was allowed to be.Many of his movies were juvenile, I admit this, because it was true. However, that wasn't his fault. He had no control over that aspect of his life.Watch more Elvis movies Mr. Viewer, and get a backbone while you're at it.I recommend Wild in the Country and King Creole to start with. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of Elvis Presley best film
This is definately one of Elvis Presley's best movie. I saw this in the cinema when I was a kid in 1963. Today I am still enjoying it even though I'm 55. Great songs, action and Elvis looking still good after all these years. He's still young and beautiful and still alive on the TV Screen. Long Live The King!

Editorial Review

After Elvis Presley got out of the army in 1960, he was instantly ushered into this Paramount movie about an Oklahoma singer who (surprise) gets out of the army and wants to open a club. Making a potentially lucrative bet that he can seduce a cabaret singer (Juliet Prowse), Elvis instead falls in love. Refurbished from his rockabilly roots into a slicker model for early-'60s pop, the Elvis of this movie is the one who made almost 30 more just like it. The songs include the title track, plus "It's Not Good Enough for You," "Tonight Is So Right for Love," and "Wooden Heart." Directed by Norman Taurog, a studio veteran who made his first film in 1928 and worked numerous times with Presley as well as Jerry Lewis. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Elvis with Julia Prowse
As Elvis once said this woman has a body that would make a preacher stamp his foot. Her dancing (as a professional dancer myself) is esquisite, she moves like a cat, and Elvis was as charming and charismatic as always, I enjoyed this movies when it first came out and never tire of watching it, and am going to purchase it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, Brilliant, Terrific
To me, this is one of the very best Elvis Presley musical extravaganza. Briliant movie - loved all the songs. What a superb DVD!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Too Much "Money" business
2003 plays like 2nd generation video, Elvis is fuzzy, not clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great movie!
I have always loved this movie, of course I have always been a Jerry Lewis fan.I have never been to crazy about Dean Martin and his singing but I guess without him in some of these movies Jerry wouldn't have been so funny.Even though Jerry carries himself well without Dean in alot of movies. My kids love Jerry Lewis now! This one is the best one that they made together in my opinion!Very funny!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good performance
Really really like the paratroopers dancing around Dean Martins Singing. It's like where they left off on At war with the army. I would buy these two movies together.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martin/Lewis' best film together (I think so, anyway)
Watch this movie and look around the jump towers at Fort Benning and you'll SEE NO BUILDING 4 INFANTRY HALL which wasn't built until 1964! One thing we should remember about films like this, though they be comedies, they are often filmed on location, with help from the U.S. Army and in so doing, they capture rare moments (like a jump tower mound with no Building 4 behind it!) that are lost forever. For example, at the film's end you see Martin/Lewis take part in a mass tactical parachute jump where you see C-82 aircraft with their rear clam shells removed to airdrop jeeps and artillery pieces...this footage alone makes this video worthwhile....where else can you find it?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars That's Nitro-Glycerine!
Tom Edison is one of the scientific geniuses that has most effected daily life in the modern world. However, as a child, his eccentric behavior and overactive mind got him into trouble. This film depicts Tom's (Mickey Rooney) early life, his fascination with Morse Code, his interest in combining chemicals, his thirst for knowledge, and his close relationships with his sister (Virginia Weidler) and his mother (Fay Bainter).

As a science teacher, it's fun to show a good, enriching, humorous, and educational film, but films like this are so very rare.Young Tom Edison is one of those unique Hollywood gems that fits the bill perfectly.Every year I show this film I hear the same thing: "Awww...do we HAVE to watch a black & white film ?""These old films are never any good!""How old is this ?""Is the real Tom Edison in this?"Read more
