5-0 out of 5 stars The Rabbit Almost Stole the Movie!
I don't want to repeat what all the other reviewers have said.I know that when I went to see this movie when it first came out ( yes, I am "that" old ) I didn't have too much hope of it being a good movie.I mean it was Jerry Lewis without Dean Martin! How good could it be?Well turns out it was an excellent movie with an excellent performance by Jerry Lewis.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Movie Has Magic!
Although Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made a great team, this movie, The Geisha Boy, shows Jerry's true talent solo.4-0 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem of Jerry Lewis; A Japanese Fan Can Testify
Owing to Eddie Murphy remake, "The Nutty Professor" comes to our mind first as Jerry Lewis's most representative work, but it also tends to overshadow his other neglected gems, one of which is here, "The Geisha Boy."Despite its now corny title, the film has still a lot to offer for our laugh.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Martin - Lewis in Motion
Gorgeously original slapdash comedy, suave Dean Martin and geeky Jerry Lewis team up with badass ride and great dane to cruise to Hollywood.Hilarious nostalgic fun,one of Frank Tashlin's best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Martin and Lewis part with their greatest film.
'Hollywood Or Bust', along with 'Artists And Models', is the finest Martin and Lewis vehicle - both were directed by genius Frank Tashlin, a former cartoonist who brought a comic-strip sensibility to his movies.'Bust' is best seen as a glorious live-action cartoon, all bright painted colours (especially red and green) and exagerrated set-pieces in which extreme violence and crisis have no physical or mental effect, the characters picking themselves up, dusting off and continuing. The patterning of red, especially, has a splendid pay off when a red-jacketed Jerry finds himself in a corral with a ferocious bull.3-0 out of 5 stars Dean and Jerry Go Bust
"Hollywood or Bust" (1956) marked the cinematic swansong of Martin and Lewis, with the comedy team on its last legs. Despite Frank Tashlin's inventive direction, the film is terribly uneven. Jerry has some memorable routines, but it's evident that Dino has had enough -- the chemistry is gone. Still, it remains one of the duo's better efforts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Monroe on Steroids
Frank Tashlin and Jayne Mansfield-- a marriage made in cartoon heaven. Who better to point up the absurdities of pop culture,1950's style, than Mansfield, with her little girl squeal, breathy delivery, and protruding gunboats. She resembles nothing so much as Marilyn Monroe on steroids. And Tashlin, with his gift for social satire and cartoonist eye for exaggeration. Notice how cleverly sight gags are inserted to stress a point-- an overheated kiss that pops popcorn, a computer read-out that mimics the dialogue, celebrity-mad teen-agers that pour out of a man-hole. Notice too, how in the end, Tashlin confronts the glamorous but artificial world of advertising with the unglamorous but authentic world of living things. In a subtle way, Tashlin's subtext undermines the image-obsessed 50's by anticipating the back-to-nature 1960's.
5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Jayne Mansfield movie
Why do I call this film the best Jayne Mansfield movie?.Well,it is the largest-budget film she ever appeared in + The Film was HERS.The Studio had paid quite a bundle for that play, that basically put Ms. Mansfield on the map.Even 'The Girl Can't help it'(also a great movie),was padded (no pun intended Jaynie!) with rock'n roll numbers, because the Studio was scared that Jaynecould not carry the film alone(Were they ever wrong !).
5-0 out of 5 stars A great comedy from beginning to end!
Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter is one great laugh after another, satarizing everything about American popular culture. Even the opening credits are hilarious. Every bit of it still rings true today. Great script, performances... it's one of the best comedies of its day. If you haven't seen it yet, I guarantee that it's worth buying sight unseen. (But, you just might want to wait for the DVD.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How I fell in love with Shirley MacLaine
Considering all that has happened since, it becomes easy to forget just how great Martin and Lewis were in the early to mid fifties. This was the first of their films that I saw and, to me anyway, it remains the best and a showcase for just how much fun they were. An additional plus is a very young Shirley MacLaine, who even then displayed an incredible screen presence in what could have been a throwaway role. She outshines Dorothy Malone and set my five-year-old heart on fire. They don't make movies like this any more and that's a shame. Shirley, wherever you are, I've been waiting.

4-0 out of 5 stars My 8 year old's favorite rental!
This movie was a ton of fun.The classic scene "Bat Lady & Fat Lady" scene between Martin & Lewis made the picture.A very young (and quite attractive) Shirley MacLaine adds to the picture with a bit of wit.5-0 out of 5 stars Even if you don't like Martin and Lewis-
It is difficult not to like this brilliant Frank Tashlin film. He did cartoons in the 1940's, and he adds surreal cartoon gags here as he did in his other under-rated film THE GIRL CAN'T HELP IT. Made when Washington was investigating pin up girls like Bettie Page and horror comic books, the subplot and plea in support of kids comics was very rare for the era. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this Doris Day movie!
I love Doris Day movies for the sets, the clothes, and -- most of all -- all of the laughs and fun.It is just completely entertaining.I am always amazed by her ability to make movies work, especially when there was nothing like action, violence, or sex, that hooked her audiences in.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Glass Bottom Boat
All Doris Day fans would enjoy this comedic film spoof of the spy films of the 1960's.Lots of other great comedians in this film as well -- Arthur Godfrey, Dom DeLuis, Dick Martin, and Paul Lynde, to name a few.I love this light-hearted little film, and it brings back some nice memories of the 1960's.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1960s garbage.
Doris Day shamelessly mugs in front of the camera like she's a 20-year-old, the jokes make "The Brady Bunch" look like high comedy, and the sexist undertones to the whole affair are just offensive. Amazing to think drivel like this was being produced while the Vietnam War was spiralling out of control. Totally depressing! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Person Of Specialized Tastes Who Thinks This Is an Abomination!
First off I feel I must point out that I love British movies and that includes the British period costume movies and the British Mystery Murder movies which includes the likes of movies based on Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple so nobody could say I don't have specialized tastes! But I honesly feel that Tony Randall is a very miscast Hercule Poirot! He is a fine comic actor in American movies and TV shows but just can't pull it off as the main character in a British Whodonit! It's just too ridiculous!

5-0 out of 5 stars For specialized tastes only
This movie was intended for only the British audience. It assumes that the viewer knows about the details of the highly stratified British social customs in the early post war period. So much of the information necessary for the plot is contained in such subtle details as someone wearing a bowler hat or the upper class person offering a middle class person sherry and then leaving the room.1-0 out of 5 stars Tony Randall a Good Actor Was Badly Miscast Here!
Tony Randall as Hercule Poirot? You've got to be kidding? I liked Tony Randall in movies like Pillow Talk and he was great as Felix Unger in the Odd Couple TV show but he is no Poirot and he is definitely no David Suchet who all Poirot's will forever be measured, and after him Peter Ustinov and Albert Finney! Tony is just badly miscast as Poirot he's too tall, too skinny, etc, I also want to point out that Tony Randall is not the terrible actor the other reviewers are suggesting he is but he was just not right for tthe roll of Porot! Even though I'm not sure if he would have made a good Poirot they should have cast Robert Morley as Poirot and Tony Randall as Hastings and maybe it would have made a little more sense! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Maybe my sense of humor has changed or something????
I remembered seeing Cinderfella a long time ago and thinking it was so funny, so when I came across this film, I was excited about seeing it.Well, let's just say I could not finish this one.It just wasn't funny.Jerry Lewis was just loud and silly but that doesn't automatically equal funny in my book.I am going to rent Cinderfella soon and see if I still think that is funny. If I don't find it funny, I will amend this review because then I know my sense of humor has changed and I guess this really wouldn't be a fair review. Until then, I can't give it more than a few stars. It wasn't absolutely awful, but just wasn't fun or funny enough to hold my interest.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Disorderly Orderly; Prescription for Fun!!
If you ever wanted to see Jerry Lewis as a medical orderly then this is your golden opportunity to laugh out loud in this! The ending is hysterical. Typical Jerry Lewis fare. I loved every minute of it!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars A One Laugh Comedy!
I saw Jerry Lewis in Cinderfella and I liked it but I watched The Disorderly Orderly and since I love slapstick humor I thought I would love this movie but really it wasn't all that funny and when Jerry Lewis would use that loud voice for his character that gave the head nurse headaches it just kind of got on my nerves too. I laughed once during this movie and that was when he was outside and the psychiatric patient tied him up in the straight jacket and he very slowly was trying to make his way back to the inside of the hospital and a snail passed him moving faster then he was. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Why did I use to like this?
In the 1970s, Jerry Lewis movies were sporadically shown at 8 p.m. on New York station WNEW. At the time, I enjoyed these prime time showings, like this movie, "That's My Boy," and "Don't Give Up the Ship." How times have changed. Watching some of these movies today is downright painful. (Actually, all of them probably are; I just haven't seen them all recently.)
2-0 out of 5 stars Jerry can do better
While many people have written off Jerry Lewis as a vulgar and unfunny celebrity whose fame seems unwarranted, I believe that the man has comedic talent - and occasional brilliance - but that he needs to be reined in with strong directors and scripts. When set free and loose, Lewis can be as manically annoying as Robin Williams and seem like nothing more than an adult with attention deficit disorder in serious need of medicine. When reined in and forced to tone down the volume on his antics and perosonality (someone needed to tell Lewis that simply making a lot of geeky facial grimaces and spastic movements does not constitute comedy), he is capable of developing his ideas into good comedy that elevates him from being yesterday's Adam Sandler to Laurel and Hardy quality status. Lewis also needed to be told that a Chaplin or a Keaton he would never be (Lewis was far too vulgar and not intelligent enough) but that there was nothing wrong with developing his own character of the schmo.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, but is something missing?
I love Jerry Lewis movies, but upon viewing this Dvd version it seems that something has been cut out. My wife says she is almost sure there was more interaction between the Princess and "Fella". The Princess says she loves Fella in the end, but they have only really seen each other at the Ball. I'm not sure, maybe I just don't remember it as well as I thought. I still think it's a great movie that is good for family viewing. My Kid's and I loved it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to see why Jayne's daughter is an Emmy winner.
Ignore the glitz, Jayne Mansfield like Marilyn Monroe beneath the hype is a great actress.Fun to watch. And The Girl Can't Help It is one of the best rock 'n roll movies of the fifties.I first saw this film fifty years ago and then just the other night. My wife and I loved it.Buyer's tip.It is much much cheaper to buy the collection set that has this film, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter, and The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw.It is over priced to buy it as a single.

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic!!
an absolute time capsule of 1950s rock and roll. some of the best rock of the day. unfortunatley the artists dont get to perform the entire songs, but they are still great. and what can be said about jayne mansfield? she is stunning! seeing her in that red gown is reason enough to buy this movie. the supporting players are great. (note: juanita moore, annie johnson from lana turners "imitation of life" appears as the maid, later nominated for an acadamy award in 1959). this movie is a real treasure.

3-0 out of 5 stars The movie that left a mark of frustration
If there is such a thing as a "love and hate" movie this must be it. A movie that attracted all young people all over the world, showing in cinemascope and stereo for the first time "rock and roll". The Platters, Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Fats Domino and more, "trying" to do their best, and I mean "trying" because they were interrupted and couldn't finish their songs. I still remember the feeling, I was 13 when I saw this one, and the moment I heard "be bop a lula" I was in ecstasy. An ecstasies that didn't last too long because it was interrupted by a stupid silly line from a stupid silly Marilyn bad imitation. A song that only lasts 2' 35". An ecstasis that soon became a fury, and yes I kicked a lot of empty seats and left the movie theatre in pure frustration. I always wonder if 20th century still has the cut material and could put it together just to make "The unfinished songs from "The girl can't help it"".Wouln't it be great if somebody comes with the idea of restoring all those legendary rock and roll performers singing their entire songs, instead of so many documentaries about the history of rock that abruptly interrupt the songs just when you are starting to enjoy them. For the music I gave it a 10 for the plot and the rest a 0, My total is 2 1/2.

5-0 out of 5 stars Son ofPalface 1952
Four years after his hit comedy "The Palface 1948" , Bob Hope (1903-2003) returned to the screen as Junior Potter , Son of Painless Peter Potter , the hapless hero of the first film (The Palface 1948) . The Harvard-bred Junior heads out West to claim his fathers inheritance .Returning for the sequel , but in a different role , is Jane Russell (1921 - ) as a outlaw named "Mike" who continually has to save this our hapless hero . Also starring in the sequel is the king of the Cowboys himself, Roy Rogers (1911-1998) and his horse trigger (1932-1965) who portray themselves . Hope teams with the pair to get to the bottom of a gold shipment robbery . Also for the sequel is the oscar-winning song "Buttons and Bows" .Cowriter and director Frank Tashlin (1913-1972) , a former cartoonist and screenwriter of the first (The Palface 1948) . 4-0 out of 5 stars Very Funny Western Farce With Bob Hope And Trigger The Wonder Horse In Top Form
After the huge success of 1948's "The Paleface", which starred Bob Hope and the very beautiful Jane Russell in a hilarious farce set in the old west a sequel was a logical idea and this time around the jokes and genral scenerio were even better. Relying on the usual Hope format of jokes about current events (for 1952), a good natured jibe at pal Bing Crosby, and with him often stepping out of character during the story, to deliver some of his memorable quips, "Son of Paleface", is one sequel that really does work better than its parent. Apart from the beautiful Jane Russell returning in this sequel playing a different character from the first film, Bob Hope is teamed here also with western star Roy Rogers and his wonder horse Trigger. This makes for some great comedy and the laughs come thick and fast as Bob Hope good naturedly sends up Roy Roger's squeaky clean image and also has some memorable run ins with Trigger that have to be seen to be believed. I generally love the Bob Hope humour of his best films and while this effort comes much later in his illustrious career than such classics as "The Ghost Breakers", and "My Favourite Blonde", it is a memorable effort nevertheless that deserves the classic status that audiences have bestowed on it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anything But Sour
A WONDERFUL lost, (at least to me) Christmas movie that will now be firmly established on my list of must see Holiday films.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Comedy for the Entire Year
While this fun movie is generally shown only in December because of the movies general time frame, itis a great escape film for any time of the year.If laughter is a great medicine, this movie will revitalize you!

3-0 out of 5 stars "Lemon" Isn't Sour But Sweet
"The Lemon Drop Kid" is simply one of Bob Hope's best films. Although I don't think many people look to it when they talk about Hope, and that's a shame.

3-0 out of 5 stars It;s really not that bad
Why this film was a commercial failure and is critically loathed is beyond me. No, this is not one of Bob's best, not by any means. But Hope himself is in fine form, and while the film is uneven, there are enough good one liners and sight gags to satisfy his fans. Hope is ably supported by an ace supporting cast, including Phyllis Diller, Dick Sargent, and Jeffrey Hunter. Just sit back, relax, and laugh.

3-0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly sub-par military comedy from Bob Hope
It is rather ironic that Bob Hope (who turned 100 today) provided so much entertainment for American troops in the field from World War II to Vietnam and beyond yet could only come up with this less than stellar military comedy.Bob plays the titular Sgt. O'Farrell, the power behind the throne on a U.S. base during World War II.When the base turns dry, the result of a Japanese torpedo and unsympathetic officeers, the sarge comes up with a plan, involving his own private navy, to get beer to the troops.O'Farrell is helped by Calvin Coolidge Ishimura (Mako), a Japanese deserter hiding out on the island.Once the boys are liquored up, the next goal becomes female companionship. The good news is that this brings Gina Lollobrigida to the island; the bad news is that it also brings Phyllis Diller, who plays Nellie Krause. She takes a liking to O'Farrell, which makes it difficult for him to go after Gina (or "Maria" as she is called--but no name on earth is as good as Gina Lollobrigida).Hope and Diller worked fine in their first film together, "Eight on the Lam," but not this time around as she relentlessly pursues O'Farrell. There is some good slapstick shtick and good lines here and there, but overall it is rather uneven. Is this the best Bob Hope comedy film ever? No, that remains "Paleface," even above the Road pictures. But it is not as bad as "The Iron Petticoat" with Katharine Hepburn.Be glad I do not let anybody see my copy of that film."The Private Navy of Sgt. O'Farrell" is worth one look, but I would not consider it worth repeat viewings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope fan
This movie is so cornball that I just love it. Bob and Phyllis together are great, and so is Jeffrey Hunter. Light hearted goofy fun! Wish it were cleaned up and put in widescreen though cause the ocean island setting is very scenic. ... Read more
