5-0 out of 5 stars The nostalgia of the future!
Alain Tanner is the most conspicuous Belgium filmmaker. His visible influences come fundamentally from Jean Luc Godard. The insertion of admirable thoughts supported by excellent micros fit with impressive eloquence. Images and text integrate this wonderful film.
5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most intriguing films of all time
I disagree with some of the reviews posted on Jonah in that the themes of the film are outdated and that the characters are not as well-develped as they should be. I believe that the film is DEFINITELY NOT outdated because it revolves around people and the ideas, thoughts, and wisdom that human beings can give to their fellow man and woman. Sure, the politics are not the same in Europe anymore, but did you honestly believe that the political climate of Europe in 1976 would still be relevant in 2004, 28 years after the film was made? 5-0 out of 5 stars jonah jonah jonah
I think that the film is great because I love Jonah ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved this swiss film
I loved this swiss film, and I would like to see it released on dvd. In the meantime I might buy it in VHS format....
3-0 out of 5 stars "I'm not quite normal."
There are numerous myths surrounding the Salamander--one of the legends states that Salamanders are so inherently cold, they have the ability to extinguish fire, they can pass through fire undamaged, and fire actually renews their skin. Keep this legend in mind when watching the French film, "La Salamandre."

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Female Anti-Heroes on the Road to Hell
Two charismatic young women from different backgrounds meet when they hitchhike. One is a country girl who happens to be in the city. The other is a city girl student who has tired of her goals. Each was supposed to go her own way at the end of the ride. However based on a mutual dare, they decide to see how long they can get by together living on their wits. They mostly beg by day & sleep in barns at night. Then voila they stumble onto a gun & head for the point of no return (they get there). Made before Thelma & Louise, the ending is stronger & not corny.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will someone please release this in the UK???
I saw this film on British TV in the very late '70s (I think it was actually released in '77, not '79 as it states here), and I've been waiting 25 years or so to see it again. That's how powerful and, to use an over-used word, haunting this film is.I can honestly say that the two hours I spent watching this back then has stayed with me ever since.A mesmerising study in alienation that evokes the psychic disintegration and ennui of Europe in the '70s.Sounds dull?It isn't.It's like nothing you'll have ever seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great movie about the limits of freedom.
MESSIDOR is a superb film about the limits of freedom. It is also a road movie, though a bleak & unsettling one.Two young women meet, and without really planning it, decide to hitch-hike together. It seems almosta whim. When their money runs out, they decide to continue their impromptujourney, depending on their wits for food & shelter. One is a boredcollege student, the other from a rural area, and the two do not seem tohave alot in common. They do not bond in the predictable ways, and theirfriendship is slow to develop and not without friction. The longer theirjourney continues, the more bleak & dangerous it gets. As is THELMA& LOUISE, the fact that they are women often complicates matters, andalters the dynamic from most road movies. There is an enigmatic quality tothe story since their decision to undertake this journey isspur-of-the-moment, and it is accentuated by the fact that they begin asstrangers, only getting to know each other along the way. The experience ofwatching this movie mirrors the nature of the women's travels--it doesn'tflow but is unpredictable, veering in unexpected directions.I found itmesmerizing.A French film called VAGABOND has similar themes, but I foundMESSIDOR to be the better film.I highly recommend it--just don't expectthe pacing of a Hollywood road movie. ...
