5-0 out of 5 stars Video Circus
A camel is a racehorse designed by committee and that was impression 1 I received from this movie aimed at the 12 to 16 year old market but throwing bones to the afficianados. The budget for this film at 142 million seems like a bargain considering the fantastic scenes until you realize the trade-off was authenticity and believability. For me the absolute best scenes were the ones involving actor face to face interventions : John Cleese's new Q and Brosnan, the fencing duel with the villian that got 'out of hand', Bond's interactions with Halle Berrie & the cool female MI6 betrayer,& Judy Dench. I wanted alot more of that but instead I got ludicrous, gratuitous, overly fantastic-to hyper depressingspecial effect after special effect after special video effect. For one the hovercraft scene which comes early goes on for too long and is filmed darkly. Compared to 'The World Is Not Enough's' opening scene with Bond chasing a brunette babe through the bays of Switzerland in a Q boat, and then falling off her exploding hot air ballon to a pavillian below. I'm sorry but the hovercraft scene bombs in comparison ! Halle Berrie in theory makes a better bond girl than Denise Richards. She's smaller than Denise but man does she ever fill out that orange bikini ! I believed Halle as an American spy more than I believed Denise as a nuclear physicist tho but either 'belief' was crucial. The acting: I give the nod to Halle(again not a crucial point). When Jinx does a backward swan dive off a 150 foot cliff ... now that was good ! You never saw it coming. Halle's character 'Jinx' commits a cold blooded assasination early in the move which ruined her 'good girl' status for me. That scene was disturbing to me on a few levels. If 'Jinx' had turned out to be the 'bad girl' instead of Miranda Frost,(whom I absolutely adored!), that would have made the movie much better for me. I'll mention the Madonna theme song because for me it was a gross miscalculation. 'I'm gonna close my body now' is a repeated line in the song and it's just dumb. She's supposed to be singing about mind control in regard to being tortured. The problem with that is she's not the one being tortured and her song is frivolous which makes lite of a serious issue. The production is annoying. In the soundspace her voice is way upfront and then it's not. It's fading in and out(totally computer generated) like a spastic yo yo with me, the paying customer at the end of the string. 1st impressions are so important in the Bond movies. If it had to be a current pop star I could think of numerous better choices: Alicia Keys, Avril Lavigne, The Propellerheads,'History Repeating',(song could have been used as is). etc. All of these pop stars,(acts) would have come up with more appropriate music for this 'torture' theme. I liked the disappearing car but it was under utilized. I liked the ice palace, glacier setting and the gene transplant concept for totally altering appearance. I liked the Icarus technology for redirecting the Sun's energy. This is the stuff of cutting edge science fiction. What I did not like was the execution of these great concepts. Not convincing enough or cheesy(Ice surfing sequence). The acting was good. Especially Cleese, Brosnan and the Korea/Britt villian. I absolutely hated this villian so he did his job well!(This actor could have conceivably played Bond but in a more early Roger Moore style). In a nutshell, the action scenes were not entirely believable, went on too long and the movie felt forced and cluttered with too many idea fragments. 'The World Is Not Enough' was a better Bond flick because it had clear focus, a more believable plot and way better timing of key plot points and action sequences. The theme song was acceptably annoying in 'World' while the theme song in 'Die' was annoying and inappropriate.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mojito?
This movie is among the 1000 Best Movies on DVD by Peter Travers and I give it 4 starts or 8/10. This is a 007 James Bond movie, with all the expectations on it like gadgets, fights, chases, and hot chicks. This time Bond fights the communists from North Korea with some help from the NSA (Berry). It is located in North Korea, England and Cuba. I am not a nostalgic, so I am not going to compare this 007 movie with the old ones, that seems to be a concern among the reviewers. This movie was the last Bond movie for Brosman, was shot in 2002, and to me it's a good movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good
Many people say this is one of the weakest Bond films, right along with Moonraker and A View To A Kill. Yet, I think this is probably Brosnan's best. Sure, his previous three were good, but Goldeneye was very dark, Tomorrow Never Dies was a little too action packed for its own good, and The World Is Not Enough was kind of slow. Die Another Day is fast paced, exciting, dark (but not too dark), and contains many beautiful women and vodka martinis. All the elements that make a classic Bond film are present here, and in my opinion have been absent from the series for a while. The only problem is that the gadgets are a bit unrealistic (invisible cars?). But hey, you can't say that in 1964, some of the gadgets in Goldfinger weren't unrealistic, or a least incredible, at the time. All I'm saying is, this movie is a bit out there. But all the good Bond movies are (except Moonraker). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Plot twists I didn't see coming
Morgan Freeman as Alex Cross...Doesn't get much better than that.Monica Potter ...well, look up cute in the dictionary..Her picture is there.Anyway, this had some serious plot twists that somehow all seemed to make sense as they got tied together.Morgan Freeman continues to demonstrate that he is one of the best actors in film today.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good movie, but...
I have read all of the Alex Cross novels and as great an actor as Morgan Freeman is, he is terribly mis-cast as Alex Cross.Cross is described as a 40 year old Muhammad Ali look alike. Not even close.Of course, there is the part in the movie that they kill off a character that appears in a later novel.Maybe it was all a dream as it was for a whole season of "Dallas".
3-0 out of 5 stars Confused
I'm confused because I have no idea why this movie is called "Along Came a Spider". Other then having few similar plot twists the movie and the book are two completely different things. I'm not going to go into a huge thing on all the differnces between the book and the movie (that would take forever) but its very dissapointing thing for two reasons: fans of the book are most likely not going to like it. You watch the movie expecting to see one thing and end up getting something you didn't really want to see. The book is soooo good so I don't know why so much was changed and left out. Secondly, the movie really is pretty good, but it won't get the recognition it deserves because of it's title. If you gave the characters new names and slapped on a new title it probably would of been a much more liked movie. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent movie
Once Were Warrior is an excellent movie. The movie depicts a family of native New Zealanders and their fall from "Grace". The characters are well developed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Temeura Morrison
GREAT MOVIE!!!-etc-I am writing this review to just say that I think Temeura Morrison is one of the greatest actors that I have ever seen ( on par with Nicole Kidman-I realize some people do NOT like NK-but I think that is just some sort of social/cultural phenomena )-Check this guy out-he is REALLY unreal-also stars in the movie Whale Rider as the passive father!

5-0 out of 5 stars Transcendent movie.
I have seen this movie over a month ago and have wanted to write a review of it ten minutes into beginning the movie. Alas, I never found the words to perfectly describe the movie's beauty and power. Because really this movie is beyond words and beyond moving pictures.

Editorial Review

Writer David Mamet created two engrossing and memorable characters, played by Alec Baldwin as the urbane fashion photographer and Anthony Hopkins as a reserved and intellectual billionaire. They find themselves teamed up against a giant Kodiak bear, and their own inner demons, when lost together in the Alaskan wilderness. There is a lot going on in this picture, as the subject matter includes male rivalry, the isolationism of extreme wealth, and, most conspicuously, the survival of the fittest. Mamet's script, which sounds a little too arch in spots, is well served by New Zealand director Lee Tamahori, who knows how to capture beauty and brutality in one frame. Although the themes are enormous in scope, they are well balanced. One rarely overpowers the other, nor does the achingly beautiful scenery overshadow the acting. Even if you do not like the intellectualism of the dialogue, there are some great scenes with the bear. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A modern noir!
The script is by itself very intriguing. A crime, that attains the high spheres of the power will arise all sort of suspicious by an effective group of non traditional investigators who will play hard and face the risks to undertake the resolution of this entangled case. Cover ups, imposed limitations to find out the roots of the fact, will increase its radius of action, where the National Security is invoked in order to put all the obstacles and legal hindrances to avoid by all means to reach the awful truth.
2-0 out of 5 stars DULLHOLLAND DRAWLS
A handsome film unfortunately stranded with a smarmy storyline that leaves a bunch of very promising ideas unattended, unfinished, or just plain wasted. The pace is murderous; you've seen countryside post offices work faster than the detective work in this film. Hate to say this for a movie with big tykes like Nolte, Griffith and Connelly in it, but it's a clunker. Grab "Chinatown" instead if a classy noir suspense caper is what you're after.

2-0 out of 5 stars Mulholland...FALLS--Oh, NOW I get it!
Let's get to the good stuff about this movie before the real fun of dissecting it. For Nick Nolte fans, you'll enjoy it because he's good in it and cuts a swaggering figure in a fedora. For Jennifer Connally fans, this is a must have (you naughty boys) and you'll want to keep your finger hovering over the pause button. In the meantime, you'll be cursing the director for editing the heck out of that really good 8mm B&W movie starring the impressive Miss Connally and spending most of the film on something about radiation and men with hats in a shiny Buick. Even though this impenetrable storyline features the additional treat of one of the Baldwin brothers (Adam? Stephen??) getting the crap beat out of him, I still found it lacking since the complete footage of Miss Connally's kinky films were never found and fully displayed to their archival stature. Talk about an extra for your DVD edition!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars the broader version of the Chronicles
I watched Martian Chronicles the 3 part series on TV and it was great and entertainment(wise) better than this. However this takes place on more the timescale concieved by Bradbury, over not 8 years but 25.Starting with the "Expeditions" and youthful astronaughts(although a bit comical) and ending with A much older crew and the many inhabitants of Mars. The series on TV in 1980(mini series) was better by a long shot and the reason was, as most mid-late 80's sci-fi serial films,(and Outer Limits in the 90s) canada film studios and companies had a heavy influence and these were too canadian in atmosphere for my taste, gothic, but not the right sort of "gothic"."Thirteen"(as in "-I-" made this") and other groups were probably responsible for "the Fri 13 The Series grimness and classic-atmosphere-without style" attitued I got from these, but they are still good to watch.Particularlly Glover's semi-comedic performance as "The Last Man on Mars" and of course the psycologist(or psyciatrist) who thinks "HE" is part of another Man's hallucinations. And "Believes HE" is seeing what the "illedged crazy" man is seeing but does stubbornly(typical psy) not beleive even what "HE" is seeing!Martians! Those two are the more lighthearted and to me entertaining of this collection.Incodently, The mini series does not contain "Usher II" or the "seeing is believeing" episode.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low budget film but worth watching
An extremely low budget and cheap film. It is divided into 5 mini stories based on Bradburys Martian Chronicles. It is no where near as good as the original Chronicles starring Rock Hudson.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap and unnecessary
I remember the "Martian Chronicles" with Rock Hudson, Maria Schell and others and I'm still waiting for a re-release of this mini-series. I bought "The Martian episodes" instead and it'snothing but a cheap and unnecessary remake. Sci-Fi Fans will maybe enjoyit, but there is certainly better stuff on the market ! ... Read more

If you gave the characters new names and slapped on a new title it probably would of been a much more liked movie. ... Read more

But all the good Bond movies are (except Moonraker). ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars It seems it'a big turn-on for most people to see a "gangsta" save the United States.....
This movie is very anti-american, which is unsurprising because gangsta rap is anti-american anyway. Now the movie is simply unrealistic. The fact that they used Ice Cube to play as the protagnist is very disturbing. You will also hear him calling whites "hillbillies" even though all of the whites in this movie are very educated and are not hillbillies at all. I agree with another reviewer when he said that this movie tried to portray what the blacks do in this movie as "cool," who are a bunch of "gangsta" criminals, and if you go to college to enlighten your mind then you are a loser. In one scene, you see a whole army of "gangstas" blow their way past a military roadblock. This is not possible. The US military would not have been outwitted by a bunch of ragtag, drug-dealing parasites. All Americans who are proud of their nation, no matter what race they are, should be offended by this movie.

1-0 out of 5 stars From bad to worst
Question:What's the worst movie you have seen?We all have seen at least one, and this POS is certainly one the worst I have seen. The main character, out of shape and unable to act, seemed better suited to play a street pimp than a hero who saved the President.I borrowed this movie, and it saved me the regret of spending my money on absolute garbage. ...
