5-0 out of 5 stars DVD from Germany
There's a release of this fascinating movie on DVD . If you have a multizone player you can enjoy the moviefromwww.amazon.de (Germany.)It is stereo only and on zone 2 .

5-0 out of 5 stars Dark Brilliance
A film of dark humour; typically Irish with all the associated peculiarities.Alcoholic parents, small village life, aberrant clergy, teenagers growing up (or not), all set against the anxiety-filled zeitgeist of the cold war nuclear threat.
5-0 out of 5 stars Pat McCabe + Neil Jordan = incredible movie
One of the best book-to-film adaptations I've ever seen. The narration is handled brilliantly, preserving much of the sinister charm of McCabe's narrational style. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great Irish movie!
Liam Neeson was terrific as Michael Collins. We already know how this story turns out but the acting glued me to the screen for the entire movie.I'm always glad to see Steven Rea and Brendan Gleeson show up in a movie, as they both make it seem very real and natural. This one totally satisfied my Irish movie craving.

1-0 out of 5 stars i like the movie but this dvd was a rip-off
I saw this movie a few years ago & enjoyed it so I chose it for my final in a class that analyzed 'historical' movies. When I got this dvd, the main menu was non-existant [it goes straight to the movie], side B was blank & I had no special features. I was unable to see the last 10 sceens of the film or any special features b/c side B was blank.Sure I could return it but that doesn't really solve the problem that I had a 10 page paper where I could not analyze the end of the movie.
4-0 out of 5 stars Michael Collins
Anyone who knows the story of Michael Collins can appreciate this film. While it is not all inclusive to the trials he faced in the establishment of the Irish Republic, as well as the war against the British Occupation, it does cover the main players in the movement up to his assasination. I was rather disappointed that they did not elaborate more on the treaty talks with the British and the key players involved in the Irish envoy to London, as well as the people involved in the treaty talks for the British. Overall, the movie was very moving and very entertaining, however understanding the Irish movement will require further study by the individual. ... Read more

When it was announced that Tom Cruise would play the vampire Lestat in this adaptation of Anne Rice's bestselling novel, even Rice chimed in with a highly publicized objection. The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made. Editorial Review

You'll have to listen hard to catch all the dialogue in this dark, romantic film by director Neil Jordan. The Cockney accents are thick enough to spread on a crumpet. But it's worth the effort to plunge into the London underworld with tough but lovable thug Bob Hoskins. Just out of prison, he's given a job by his old boss (Michael Caine) as chauffeur to a gorgeous but chilly call girl (Cathy Tyson). For all his criminal experience, this guy is surprisingly innocent; when he develops a crush on the woman he's driving, it leads inevitably to tragedy. Hoskins is heartbreakingly good as this poor, thick sod, while Caine projects an oily malevolence. Tyson is also fine as a woman who has secrets of her own. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dreams Just Lie There, and They Die There
It's a stretch to link the lyrics of Nat King Cole's recording with this movie and its title. Almost any ballad would have served. But it's no stretch at all to see why "Mona Lisa" became a sleeper hit, launched the career of writer-director Neil Jordan, and won Bob Hoskins an Oscar nomination. He plays an ill-tempered ex-con hired to chauffeur a call girl (Cathy Tyson) around to clients. That he will fall for her is a given; so are the tricks that screenwriter Jordan will play on them.
5-0 out of 5 stars "Taxi Driver" meets "Fairy Tale Theatre"
Neil Jordan's brilliant British underworld fable is one of those films that actually improves with age. Bob Hoskins gives a subtly nuanced performance as a "thug with a heart of gold", just out of prison, who is immediately offered employment by his former boss, a devious London crimelord (Michael Caine, excellent as always) for whom he "took the fall" in the first place. Hoskins becomes the driver for a high class call girl (Cathy Tyson, in a remarkable debut performance) employed by Caine to service a select group of regular clients in discreet liaisons at posh hotels. Hoskins and Tyson get off to a tense, "oil and water" start, soon turning to begrudging mutual respect, which eventually mutates into something much more deep and meaningful (not what you're thinking). The story deliberately and masterfully builds into some surprising and amazing twists and turns. Hoskins and Tyson create absolute screen magic in every scene they share (like a streetwise Tracy and Hepburn). Not an altogether pleasant tale, but there is redemption, and something you don't see much in film these days-a perfect and believable ending. POSSIBLE SPOILER: For my fellow reviewer who billed his or her self sarcastically as a "philistine" who "didn't get it"- I find it amusing that you complain that you don't "want your face rubbed" in grim "reality" when you watch a film. Well, if you had observed the epilogue scene a little more carefully, you would realise that what you had just spent 100 minutes having your "face rubbed in" was not in fact "reality", but essentially an adult fairy tale! (Lest we forget, Neil Jordan's previous film was "Company of Wolves"-which was based not so subtly on "Little Red Riding Hood"!) A must for your collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Sordid, Brilliant Film With Three Great Performances
This is a sordid and at times brutal film, which also is sad and great. George (Bob Hoskins) is just out of prison, needs a job, and is assigned by the local crime lord, Mortwell (Michael Caine), to be the driver and, if needed, protector, for a high priced London call girl named Simone (Cathy Tyson). George is tough, straight forward and not too smart. His idea of getting to B from A is to simply go through whatever is in the way. He has an ex-wife who hates him, a teen-age daughter who doesn't know him, and it seems just one friend. He's just a foot soldier. Simone is tough, elegant, defensive, but George and she gradually develop a liking for each other based on...what? "Do they ever fall in love with you?" George asks her one night. "Sometimes," she says. "They fall for what they think I am." "What are you?" George asks. "What do you think I am?" she says. George looks at her, puzzled but dead serious. "A lady," he says. Almost without being aware of it he begins in an inarticulate way to fall in love.

Editorial Review

The tangled forest is misty with mystery, the thatched cottages are cute and quaint, and the dashing rogues are devious charmers, but this revision of "Little Red Riding Hood" is not your usual fairy tale. In the troubled dreams of an adolescent girl in the hormonal rush of puberty, it becomes a veritable werewolf story with lush storybook imagery, gothic horror flourishes, and decidedly sexual implications. Director Neil Jordan, who collaborated with author Angela Carter in this 1985 adaptation of her story, applies a knowing intelligence to the bittersweet tale. The often startling transformation effects may appear primitive compared to modern movies, but the delight is in the dark imagination, dense textures, and fantastical wonders of this dream world. Angela Lansbury is the story-spinning granny and David Warner the understanding woodsman father, and watch for a devilish cameo by a sinister and seductive Terence Stamp. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Company of Wolves? sounds like my office...not a looker amongst 'em. :)
anyway, yeah, this movie is very well made for the time period(early 80's). it's a literist's and horror aficionados mixed bag of goodies with gore galore and symbolism aplenty! The usual female coming of age story of first experiences with womanhood and the opposite sex and how to tame them and man's eternal struggle with the voracious beast within that wants to "eat" blossoming females.i could go on, but i think you get the point.the screenplay was actually written by famed author angela carter who deals with such subjects as children's fairy tales and adult "fairy tales" of sexual politics.in the end, what difference does it make?either you become a wolf yourself or become the prey. either way you're dammmmmmnnnnneeddd.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine Company

5-0 out of 5 stars Wholly beguiling and never vulgar
Loosely based on the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale and arguably the best thing Neil Jordan ever did, this film -- love it or hate it -- stands alone in its class.

3-0 out of 5 stars A fun film, gets better with repeat viewings
Like most viewers (and the critics), I wasn't crazy about this buffoonish comedy when I first saw it in the '80's... but time has been kind to it. This remake of the Humphrey Bogart-Aldo Ray 1955 comedy-drama concerns escaped convicts (cut from 3 down to 2) who disguise themselves as priests and hide out in a boardertown, learning to love the residents if not their new vocations. Robert DeNiro mugs with a surprising vigor (his face seems to be made of rubber) and Sean Penn plays the dumb mug sidekick, and they're OK; but don't forget the supporting cast, which is excellent (particularly Demi Moore as a flooze and John C. Reilly as a seminarian). Production values are incredible (that entire town was built for the film) and there's a rousing climax involving a parade, a statue and a little girl (another great performance). Really not too bad, once you get over the shock of seeing two of our most intense, dramatic actors acting like two outta three stooges.

5-0 out of 5 stars Master OF The Rare LASERDISCS Movies.
We're No Angels is A MASTERPIECE That Includes Robert deniro,Sean Penn And Demi Moore,I have it on LASERDISC And On DVD too,You will love it :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching
I loved this movie. Its totally funny. The ending gave me goosebumps and portrays a thought provoking message of the "no matter what everlasting" love of God. Sean Penn especially was hilarious as was John C. Reilly's character and the moments these two share together. Overall a heartwarming and touching movie with funny bits thrown in. Not for someone looking to debate faith with logic in mind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars VERY WELL DONE PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER
I guess I am in the minority here. I happened to think that "In Dreams" was not only a very good film, [and disturbing] but very different from so many other thrillers. As for the cast, they are all top-notch, contrary to many other reviews. Claire Cooper (Annette Bening) portrays a mother of a young girl, and Claire also happens to be clairvoyant. She begins having dreams of a child that is about to be abducted and killed. She implores her husband to contact the police, and they dismiss him and her as just another nut-case.
3-0 out of 5 stars Exciting horror film that unfortunately kind of falls apart at the end.
Extremely well-done thriller, most of the way. I wouldn't want to own it, though.Saw it on TV.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saturated colorful fury...
In Dreams is an extremely surreal movie shot in beautiful colors and unforgettable imagery. Quite shocking and violent, the scenes will stay with you for days after viewing this. Annette Benning gives a top notch preformance she IS Claire!!!!And Robert Downey Jr. gives a chilling preformance as Vivian, the confused villan.Highly reccomended nail biter...just wait until the climax at the end on the bridge... ... What a horrible, horrible waste of time. And, as usual, nothing like what was described on the box.
3-0 out of 5 stars Watch This With Subtitles And You'll Be Pleased
This was a re-make of the 1955 film noir, "Bob LeFlambeur," which I also own. That was black-and-white and made in France while this is 2002 movie in color with English-speaking actors.
4-0 out of 5 stars It's in English, but be sure to have subtitles "On"!
People who enjoy heist films with lovable criminals addicted to hard drugs will like this film. It is beautifully filmed in France and Monte Carlo, and veers between sentimental characters using hardboiled dialogue.

hahahaha, you have never seen a movie quite like this. The biggest favor you could do yourself is *not to read anything about it* and just watch it.The beginning *is* slow; stick with it.
4-0 out of 5 stars about the movie the crying game.................
This DVD film/movie is sold in Singapore videoshops and I grabbed a copy and watched. The story is basically about a moderate bad guy image in the kidnap scene managed to let the victim escape but was knocked down by army vehicle after he managed to run out of the forest (at the main road). The story end with the revolver kill of two escaped kidnapper(bad ones) by the victim's girlfriend whom use the weapon that is from the moderate bad guy. He was jailed for killing the woman whom the victim's girlfriend shot her to die and asked her to get way from the murder scene. They start to know each other during the conversational talk when she visted him in jail. This is not a bad piece of written story that the director asked the producer to write the script and convert it into film. Recommended for those whom are interested in this genre of DVD film/movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vampire Film
I think we can all agree this is an amazing movie, and one of the best vampire films of all, but...
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! ow! wow!
With the genius of Anne (Rice) the talents of Tom (Cruise) and Brad (Pitt) and the rest of the crew. This one is just it. This is the movie to watch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Anne Rice does it again
Interview with a Vampire is a great work by Anne Rice and it has been made into an excellent movie. The acting by Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt is amazing, and Kirsten Dunst has a stellar performance as Claudia. The story is told very well.I've read some of Anne Rice's other books and I will definitely read this one after seeing how good of a movie it is. ...

Overall, the movie was very moving and very entertaining, however understanding the Irish movement will require further study by the individual. ... Read more
