Editorial Review

MacLachlan, author of Unclaimed Treasures, has written an affecting tale for children. In the late 19th century a widowed midwestern farmer with two children--Anna and Caleb--advertises for a wife. When Sarah arrives she is homesick for Maine, especially for the ocean which she misses greatly. The children fear that she will not stay, and when she goes off to town alone, young Caleb--whose mother died during childbirth--is stricken with the fear that she has gone for good. But she returns with colored pencils to illustrate for them the beauty of Maine, and to explain that, though she misses her home, "the truth of it is I would miss you more." The tale gently explores themes of abandonment, loss and love. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sarah, Plain and Tall
Sarah, Plain and Tall is a heartfelt story about a family who lost a mother and wife. Jacob, Caleb and Anna's father, must make the decision to place an ad for a wife and mother for the best for all of them.Sarah, a young lady from Maine, returns letters back and forth to the whole family getting to know them better. She decides to come down to the prairies of Kansas from the sea for a month to see if this is a life she could become accustomed to.When the children see the yellow bonnet coming down the road, excitement was in the air along with anticipation.Would she decide to stay and marry Jacob, or would this place be too small and too far away from the sea for Sarah.
5-0 out of 5 stars great great GREAT!
The book is about the Ann and Caleb's mom dies in her sleep after having Caleb. After a few years Jacob (the dad) writes an ad asking for a new wife. And Sarah answered back, and she answered all the questions.

This is the Original 1966 Version with GERALDINE PAGE, DONNIE MELVIN. Narrated by TRUMAN CAPOTE and directed by Frank Perry.. We are the sole licensed publisher for this film. 4-0 out of 5 stars I remember it like it was yesterday
I saw "A Christmas Memory" when it originally aired in the late sixties, and it made such an impression on me that it has remained, in my mind, one of the best Christmas movies ever. Between then and now it lived on only in my mind since VHS and now DVD technology are still relatively recent. But I always told everyone about this film when we shared our "best of..." lists, and made a point of searching out the original story after seeing the film. The short story itself is one of my favorites.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent acting by all stars-A movie with immediate insite
Enjoyable movie that doesn't waste time letting you in on the feelings and problems of all the characters involved in a most down to earth, comical way that holds your interest from begining to end.Delightful story about a bunch of messed up grown-ups, who through the relentless efforts of an equally messed up, but very determined adolesent, all eventually find the road to love and happiness.Excellent performances by all stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, down to earth love story -- unforgettable
This is a romantic comedy about a writer who temps as a security guard in a school. He discovers that Sarandon is sending her son to a school out of her district and in the process of his investigation, becomes interested and empathetic to the child and falls in love with Sarandon. The story is realistic and funny, and one of the great early dreyfuss/sarandon films.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Movie
This movie is one of the very best I've ever seen.A light-hearted comedy starring Richard Dryfus and Susan Sarandon, it portrays a a profound friendship that eventually leads to a love match.I highly recommend it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD set.
This is one of Hallmark best efforts. I just love these movies; I've watched them several times. They're great movies for the entire family. I would recommend these movies to everyone.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty awful, unlike the book
Sarah Plain and Tall, the book, is beautifully written. It's Hallmark "Made for TV" movie adaption does not live up to it's book's glory. I am not impressed with this movie. My little girl, whom I homeschool, watched this movie and said that she hated it because, "They [the children] didn't look like they did in my head!" The two others weren't any better. I am extremely dissapointed with the casting. The worst part about it is that it's not told from Caleb and Anna's point of view, which is what makes the book what it is. I have to say this to anyone who's thinking about seeing these movies, DON'T!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good not great
I thought Sarah, Plain and Tall was excellent.Skylark was great.Winter's End seemed to have a less-than-great script writer and/or director. It might have been worthwhile to look for different actors for the kids, although I liked seeing them, they were better actors as children. The movie was filled with too many cliches, and the "passionate" scenes between father and grandfather seemed very out-of-place, not too convincing.Too bad, because it is decent family entertainment. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of the DVD treatment
Excellent film, thoughtful yet entertaining. Not without flaws, surely, and in light of recent events the setting may obscure the story. And it's a good story, one I sorely wish was available in a widescreen DVD edition.
5-0 out of 5 stars Apropos
What better movie for a priest to review than 'Mass Appeal'? Directed by Glenn Jackson, and co-starring veteran actors Jack Lemmon and Charles Durning with relative newcomer Zeljko Ivanek, this story has influenced me in interesting ways.5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing!
This is one of the finest films I've ever seen.As a seminarian myself, I am convinced this film should be required viewing for all seminarians, priests, and all formators in the pre-seminary and seminary systems.Jack Lemmon and Zeljko Ivanek give poweful performances as Father Tim Farley and Deacon Mark Dolson; Lemmon's character is a wildly popular but complacent parish priest.Ivanek, in the role of a newly ordained transitional deacon, plays the idealistic and brash seminarian who conflicts with Fr. Farley's "song and dance" theology. As the two interact, a friendship is forged and the aging priest rediscovers his priestly vocation from the prodding of the young deacon.Ultimately, Fr. Farley finds himself in the position of defending young Dolson against the homophobic attack of the seminary rector.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Poor QualityDVD
I purchased this movie, Les Miserables, for my boyfriend. All he ever talked about was this movie starring Richard Jordan and Anthony Perkins. Since it was a fairly old movie, I chose to purchase what I thought would be a quality movie from Amazon. My boyfriend watched the movie while I was working one night, and to his dissapointment, towards the end of the movie, the DVD stopped, slowed down, started, paused, started, slowed. What a shame. I am really dissapointed with my purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Story, good movie, bad special effects.
The story revolves around Jean Valjean. He is sent to prison for 5 years for stealing a loaf of bread. Time is added to his sentence after a series of attempts to escape. After 19 years in jail he finally escapes. He meets a bishop, "who buys his soul", and makes him change his life. After 5 years of hard work he becomes mayor in a town. A new Inspector moves in and recognizes him. After 15 years of trying to run away from police, they meet again in Paris. The inspector finally has a chance to kill his rival, but decides not to and commits suicide.
3-0 out of 5 stars Nice film--but no music!
Film version of Les Mis has great acting and authentic setting. However I didn't realise when reading other reviews that this was a dramatic version based only on the book (not the play) and therefore all the glorious music is not part of it. How dissapointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this on DVD
There are certain movies that I like to buy and watch again and again. This is one of them. Great story, great performances. I'm not sure why it's not on DVD but it should be. I'd buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars MARSHA MASON'S GREATEST ROLE YET!
If ever there was such a thing and I controlled the ballots for the Best Actress Oscar in 1981, I would have given the golden boy to Marsha Mason for her amazing performance as Georgia Hines in the always entertaining ONLY WHEN I LAUGH.Once again, Ms. Mason outdoes herself in this "dramedy" about sordid lives, real addictions and mother-daughter dilemmas handled with craft and skill by Neil Simon. Not only does she deliver the goods here, Mason is supported by some real pros including James Coco and Joan Hackett as friends who adore Georgia but have their own hang-ups & dramas to deal with.I feel Kristy McNichol is a bit miscast in this film as Georgia's confused teenage daughter, but does her best with the material at hand.ONLY WHEN I LAUGH is pure entertainment filled with some biting dialogue and dramatic touches bringing it to a nice simmer. At the height of her career, Ms. Mason's stunning performance as a formerly overweight, down-on-her-luck stage actress with an unquenchable thirst proves she's go what it takes to make you laugh, cry and relate to her character on many levels. As far as acting goes, this is as good as it gets!!PLEASE NOTE THAT ALONG WITH THE OTHER REVIEWERS, WE NEED THIS MOVIE ON DVD.MY VHS TAPE HAS SEEN ITS BETTER DAYS.AMAZON--PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE MAKE SOME NOISE WITH COLUMBIA PICTURES TO TRANSFER THIS FABULOUS FILM TO DVD.ITS TIME HAS COME!!!
4-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF NEIL SIMON'S BEST
Excellent cast and extremely well written material.Only when I Laugh shows Marsha Mason at her best along with the late James coco and Joan Hackett. We also see a very talented Kristy McNichols. Can't wait for the DVD release of this classic! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars The creator of M*A*S*H wrote this?
I was surprised to see Larry Gelbart wrote the screenplay of this unfunny movie.I can recall very few laughs in this film. The premise of the film is to highlight the greed of the 1980's, but the lesson is quite dated in the era of Enron and WorldCom.The greed here is apparent and at least honest and upfront, in contrast to the dishonesty and deception of some of the greed of the late 1990's.As for the message, I certainly don't think the shareholders of RJR Reynolds minded being courted so well.If I were a shareholder of a slumping company I'd be mighty grateful to live in a society where people have the freedom to pay whatever crazy price they want for my stock!James Garner is wonderful in this show, and the movie does a nice job of laying out the business concepts in terms your grandmother can understand.I do have to confess, however, to dozing a bit in the middle of this movie, so perhaps I missed the funny parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Business with a sence of Humour
Business with humour, nothing better. Great film that combines factually based 1980's greed with a humerous side. Loved it when R & D produced a questionable product, with a distinctive smell and taste :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars 1980's Greed at its Best
Barbarian's at the Gate was one of HBO's first attempt at quality television movie making.HBO has become a ground for stars to do "quality but uncommercial" films. This film does not have any major stars but was produced by Ray Stark (Funny Girl and numerous Neil Simon movies) and written by Larry Gelbart (M*A*S*H).

4-0 out of 5 stars Jessica Lange as Blanche:pure genius!
This lavish 1995 television remake of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is simply sublime.Jessica Lange is perfect casting for the tour-de-force role of Blanche DuBois, and Tennessee Williams' play still packs a hell of a punch.
5-0 out of 5 stars This Movie Compares Well With the Original!
Perhaps I had lower expectations of this production since I have always been taken by the 1951 version of this Tennessee Williams classic with Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. I couldn't imagine any performance by any actor competing with theirs. But in this version both Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange distinguish themselves. Of course they are not Brando and Leigh but they don't have to be. Lange who is famous for playing disturbed women (FRANCES and BLUE SKIES) is quite good as the fragile, mentally wobbly Blanche. There are times when she has that scary, crazy look in her eyes that puts chills on your spine. While Baldwin is not quite as much of an animal as Brando, he certainly is believable as the rough and sexy Stanley. Nobody exhibits more anger on screen than Mr. Baldwin. John Goodman brings a gentleness to his role as Mitch that makes him just right for the guiles of Blanche.
5-0 out of 5 stars Refurbished Streetcar rides better than the original
I was age two in 1951 when Tennessee Williams's A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE had its first Silver Screen incarnation. I don't recall seeing this film during the 50s as part of a twenty-five cent, Saturday, kiddy matinee double feature. Well, we would have been bored with such grown-up tempests-in-a-teapot anyway. As an adult, I can now view both the original and this 1995 version, and reap the benefit of improved film-making technology and relaxed censorship, though both versions are substantively identical - no surprise, since they're both working off the same script. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Unsung Gem of a TV Movie
Featuring the young Alec Baldwin at his most compelling, Dress Grey(screenplay by Gore Vidal), is a political murder mystery with a SouthernGothic touch.Fans of "Advise and Consent," "The BestMan," etc. will enjoy the slightly over-the-top military-schoolmachinations of a bunch of fine character actors like Hal Holbrook, AlexisSmith, Lloyd Bridges, Eddie Albert et al, and mystery fans won't bedisappointed by the plot, which has plenty of twists and turns and even acouple of truly tense and suspenseful moments.Frank discussion ofhomosexuality in military school setting my be a turn-off for some (and aturn-on for others, for whom Baldwin and fellow students provide plenty ofeye-candy.)Long enough for more than one bowl of popcorn, consistenlyinteresting, a must-see. Not sure what the diffence is between the slightlydifferent prices and number of tapes listed here, I have viewed the doubletape version, buy others at your own risk.

5-0 out of 5 stars A suspensful miltary thriller set in the 1960's!
This video deals with a miltary school in the 1960's. A cadethas died. The miltary are looking into the matter. Everyone issuspect. Alec Baldwin plays a cadet who gets set up during the trial of his fellow cadet. The movie is fast as the miltary is trying to avoid a media frenzy on the base. This movie also deals with gays and the miltary. There is a slight hint that maybe the cadet was killed by a gay lover. Of course the miltary back then would not like this stuff out to the media. The movie is a very suspenseful thriller in the 1960's! This video features an an all star cast Alec Baldwin(The Hunt For Red Ocober,Mecury Rising),Lane Smith(Superman TV series)Lloyd Bridges(the hot shot movies) and others! look for some up and coming stars in this video as well! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Cast and Writer
If you enjoyed "Foxfire" or "The Dollmaker", you will love this too. If you have seen this already be sure to check the other two I mentioned. Susan Cooper is an outstanding writer to have written such great stories of how people cope with lifes events. Some wonderful and some heartbreaking, we learn to move on and embrace the best of what we have had and lost. Cronyn and Tandy are perfect for their roles and will draw you into this story as though it happened to you. This is one of the best Hallmark has to offer. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Realistic Story
I found this film to be a very realistic example of lifes issues that a family sometimes experiences.A husband and wife drifting apart, teenage children growing up.All of a sudden a tradgedy happens and the blaming and anger and other emotions start to pile up and the pressures of people who don't really know each other as good as they thought they did starts to surface. Can they keep it together and pull through?Well I'll just say I recommend people watch it,because in our present daily lives maybe everyone can be inspired by this great film!Go ahead and see for yourself--the whole cast was great, especially Ms.DeMornay!

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly inspirational
I was really touched by this movie and think it's one of the best movies I've ever seen! The range of emotions and realistic family problems was so real to me.But it goes to show how tradegy can be overcome when people don't give up on each other! I thought Ms.DeMornay and the rest of the cast were great but especially Ms. DeMornay but I think all her characters and movies are great! I very highly recommend this movie for the whole family! Jim.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great story about a family devastated by tragedy.
Well, this movie starts off with the Mahler family, Nora(Rebbeca DeMornay), the mother, Neal(Keith Carradine), the father, Clea(Thora Birch), the daughter and Simon, the son, all living in a ranch ran by Noraherself, where she shares her love of horses (which are raised by hertoo)with Clea and especially Simon, but Neal has never really liked livingthere, which makes him live after her wifes wishes, and which is tearingthem both apart little by little. Then tragedy strikes the whole family, when an accident happens(which I will not reveal), leaving all the family, especially Nora heartbroken and devastated, her devastation and heartbrokeblinds her of everything, she doesn't realize that the other family membersare suffering too, and are devastated too, when her mother Maggie(EllenBurstyn) arrives to the "rescue" the family from tearing apartmore than they already are after hearing the terrible news, she makes Norarealize shes not the only sad person and that she should pay moreattention to whats going on with the family after the accident, especiallyClea(Thora Birch), which is hiding a terrible feeling which is destroyingher little by little.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars "I may be eccentric but not so eccentric I do not have the need for ordinary human love."
Written in 1964, Eccentricities of a Nightingale, like several other Tennessee Williams plays, focuses on a neurasthenic young woman for whom time has stood still.Unmarried, Alma Winemiller fails to belong to the local society of Glorious Hill.Though she is a singer and teaches music, her exaggerated gestures and her personal tics make her an object of pity and even mockery within the town, and her minister father often reprimands her for her peculiarities, which he believes reflect badly upon his position. Her mother, mentally ill, is hidden upstairs, and Alma and her father fear Alma may have inherited her mother's illness.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent production of a rare Williams play
Outstanding performance by a luminous Blythe Danner and a wonderfully underplayed Frank Langella. We enjoyed this much more than "Summer and Smoke".

5-0 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Peice of Acting
I saw this work many years ago and it has stayed with me all this time. It stands out as masterful acting by Miss Danner; her work is touching and delicate. The play is a work of genus. It is too bad that is it not known as well as some of Tennessee Williams other works. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie
This is one of many wonderful movies put out by Hallmark. Thw scenery is beautiful as well. There are several other titles available in their heartwarming tales. You can purchase them at hallmark.com avg. price: $14.98 for DVD. VHS also available.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gripping Tragedy & Love Story
This is a gripping story that is well acted by all the cast, and is based on the book by Willa Cather. However, this isn't your 'typical' pioneer film. It's very touching, but the ending is very bittersweet. Alexandra's father dies and leaves the farm to her because she is the oldest and has the wisest judgement, even though she is the only girl in the family. Her mother is still alive, but has no interest in the land. Alexandra's brothers listen to her because of their father's command, but sadly really have very little respect for her. Her childhood sweetheart and kindred spirit, Carl, is a budding young artist and leaves town with his family to fulfill his dreams. I found these earlier scenes, played by younger actors to be very sweet and touching. After finding success and making the family rich, Alexandra has to settle issues of her heart when Carl returns 15 years later. She also tries to fulfill a promise to her mother that she will help her youngest brother find a career away from farm life. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good literature in a movie!

This video features an an all star cast Alec Baldwin(The Hunt For Red Ocober,Mecury Rising),Lane Smith(Superman TV series)Lloyd Bridges(the hot shot movies) and others! look for some up and coming stars in this video as well! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great performance! Don't overlook it.
I can't commend this highly enough.I saw it on the local Public Television station here in Chicago when it was first broadcast in the early 1970s, and it made a tremendous impact on me.This play, and the very similar "Awake and Sing," are depression era dramas written by Clifford Odets and originally produced for the stage in the mid 1930s, when they were the cutting edge of contemporary theatre and dealt with contemporary issues. These new DVDs contain television productions done with top-notch casts in the early 1970s.I found them unforgettable, and am delighted to be able to savor them again after 30-plus years. They're just as good as I remember.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated, but still compelling
To those from the King of Prussia Area (like myself), there are references and allusions to places (VF park, etc.) and some interesting exaggerated portrayal of characters, some of which I had for teachers (Pat Schnure, Vince Valaitis)
3-0 out of 5 stars Leaves something to be desired
Dated, by todays standards, but still compelling.First half is interesting, and you are glued to the screen trying to absord the information given by Coyote's character, yet hoping he turns out to be the good guy.Little by little we're given bits and pieces of what happened, but only through Coyote's character, who turns out to be a manipulating deceiver, cold and scary with his Manson like powers over less experienced people. The second half is confusing, and Coyote and Loggia are off screen for nearly forty minutes. In the ending court-room drama, we don't see a flashback or re-inactment of what "supposedly" happened to this female school teacher and her two children.I guess both Coyote's character, Bill Bradfield, and Loggia as Dr. Smith did commit the crime. But, we as viewers don't feel or see any concrete evidence, and this leaves something to be desired.Based on a true story that took place in 1979 in Pennsylvania, and a case that lasted seven years.Just too many questions left unanswered.Yet, Loggia is awesome, and scary (wait until you see those "eyes".) And it's always a pleasure to see Peter Coyote, a very under-rated actor.I don't know...maybe I should've read the book instead.

3-0 out of 5 stars Picture of Dorian Grey
As in all of Oscar Wildes work this had an excellent story line. The acting was wonderful and it followed the book quite well. This is a must see for anyone that values good literature.

1-0 out of 5 stars fills the eye but NOT the ear
I'm just another customer who was very disappointed to discover that my new DVD of this title (as well as the replacement DVD MPI sent me) had such appallingly bad audio (the actors sound as if they're speaking through wads of cotton). It's also worth noting that MPI's DVD of "Turn of the Screw" has the exact same problem.Beware! ...
