DONT listen to that silly man " a viewer" He doesnt know a thing. You can watch this extrodinary film on DVD and reap the hearty rewards of laughter and happiness. Or you can watch a VHS and dial up the internet while you toast your snax on a fire. In other words....The dvd is far better then any old VHS. This DVD is the best. Just believe me. You will thank me later. And see Spamalot too.

A breath of fresh air.
With all the deadly serious movies about the grail out there these days it's good to once again watch a movie that treats the subject with a sense of humor.

One of my favorite comedies, and Monty Python's best and most irreverent movie is Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The Monty Python troop made three films and had a television series that challenged the status quo by dealing with religion, class welfare, politics and dead parrots. There humor seems as fresh and rebellious today as when it was aired. Sometimes their humor was forced -- some scenes in The Meaning of Lif(e) ; however, Monty Python and the Holy Grail has the perfect mix of antitoletarism, irreverence and silly sots.

Mythic Fable of Norse Mythology... with a demented twist.
It's what you have come to expect from the guys from Monty Python. It's silly, irreverent, and utterly strange. Erik the Viking is a light hearted dark comedy, and even though that sounds odds those of you who have seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail or The Life of Brian will understand. This will never be called a masterpiece of cinematography, acting or special effects. Then again it's not meant to. The movie does accomplish what it sets out to do.
Please, Sony Home Entertainment, Release This DVD!
I've been waiting for this movie to come back into print for, like, 10 years, and was SO excited to get my copy in February. A couple of weeks after the release date, when it still hadn't arrived, I had to call Amazon to find out what was up. They couldn't tell me.

According to the official Terry Jones website, a two-disc Region 1 "Director's Son's" cut of the movie, with commentary, is now tentatively scheduled for release in October 2006. If Adventure Has a Name...
It must be Indiana Jones! German East Africa, 1916:

All right, I'm biased.When I watched the whole series on TV I was only about 7, so my memories of most of the episodes are all but nonexistent."Phantom Train" is one of the exceptions, and the most vivid in my mind.So naturally I enjoyed watching it again, even more than the others.It's great as a breather between "Trenches of Hell" and "Oganga", which are very thoughtful and serious.It is a tad hokey, but in that respect most like the Harrison Ford movies.Indy undergoes character developement, however, which is good.The first half has plenty of action, but Indy learns his lesson of the day, and this lesson actually sticks with him and is seen in the movies.That is, that the ability to improvise is a quality. VERY, VERY GOOD VIDEO
I've been an Indiana Jones fan for over six years and this was one of the first young Indy videos I watched.I have seen about half of the episodes available on video and so far this is still my favorite.It had a good story with good acting and great special effects.It is a classic tale of adventure in Africa.In the first part of the video Indy accidently goes on a mission to blow up a mysterious train with a flat-bed mounted cannon that has been shelling allied troops but cannot be found.In the second part of the video, Indy and his army buddy Remmy try to survive the wilds of Africa with an important german military prisoner.They run into hostile bush-men, lions, and are being pursued by the entire German army the whole time.Action-packed and full of surprises along with nice bits of humor in appropriate places this video should delight anyone intereseted in Indiana Jones. ... Stop being so picky
I'm disliking all the bad press that the second half of this tape is getting. Personally, it's one of my favorites along with two others which have not been released on tape. Great first half, strange second half
The first half of this video is great, it starts out with an amusing instance of mistaken identity, as two Austrian princes, who are also French lieutenants, mistake Indy for a delivery boy because he's riding a bike and his uniform is covered up by his coat.They run him off the road with their car, and are later shocked to learn that he's not only not a delivery boy, but that he's a captain, outranking them.Indy, still insulted, isn't impressed to then learn that they are royalty.This doesn't get the relationship off to a very good start, and so of course Indy is assigned to escort them across the border to Austria. Confusing plot, but on the whole a good movie

No Subtitles or Close Captioning
Despite the fact that this is an awesome and humorous movie (The best monty python ever made). This gets a 1 from me for having no subtitles or close captioning since I am hard of hearing. Are there any versions with subtitles??

Please sir, I want some more
If you watch these videos in chronological order (which you should) this provides a fascinating follow up to the cute and funny Spring Break Adventure (even the more serious Mexico half featured jokes like the letter Indy wrote to his dad).The only problem is, that it shouldn't follow directly after like it does.There were two episodes, "Ireland, April 1916" and "London, May 1916" that were not put on video.Instead, we jump from what must be March (in Mexico) to "Somme, Early August 1916" and "Germany, Mid August 1916".One might ask why this was done. These are arguably the greatest episodes in the series. They are emotional, moving, action packed, and realistic. If there's a knock on the series it's that it's often hokey, and Indy runs into too many famous people. But this episode pulled no punches and delivered on all cylinders. Hard To Believe It's Monty Python
Usually I'd give a five star review to anything Monty Python has done, but this film didn't really strike a chord with me.The reason?Lots of sex, gore, and vomit.I usually like things that are more suitable for children, so there was a lot of stuff in this movie for me not to like.
A Classic Comedy
I don't know about "DVD mastering" of this film which was criticized---I saw the VHS version. And, I don't know about people who can't laugh at "the Protestant vs. Catholic" incongruities---I suppose those people take their religion very seriously or are just "very serious" type of people.But, if you can see that "there is humor in everything" then you'd enjoy this CLASSIC COMEDY immensly!The film is not totally "suitable for children" because there is one "sex scene" in the film which I used to "fast forward" when any kids were present in the room while the film was on.So, it's an "adult film" I'd say.The good about the film is that you'll see one clever satire after another about many subjects that you might have believed were not humorous before seeing the film.And, it is an "intelligent funny film" ---it's not a farce or silly.You'll enjoy it---if you're not "too serious" that is! I walked out on it in theaters back in 1983!
I went and saw another film as I was so disenchanted with this one. The opening had so little to do with the rest of the film I thought I was watching a preview to another film. I don't care for spoofs about Catholics and protestants. The Pythons can't sing or dance (for those on this board who claim their talents are innumerable). Really funny
The first half is a hoot the whole way through, it has to be the funniest Young Indy episode.The ending is great; I remember being surprised when I first watched it on TV, so I won't give it away.I'll just say Giulietta isn't as naive as she seemed. One of the best in the series to start with
Though the series is plagued with misguided efforts to steer Indy into the company of historical greats, this time Lucasfilm keeps the improbabilities to a minimum.This pleasant surprise allows Indy some interestingcharacter development.This is the only tape in which both hours aredevoted to romantic plot lines. WOW!
This has to be the best out of the titles released in the UK so far ('Phantom Train of Doom', 'Treasure of the Peacock's Eye', 'Daredevils of the Desert' and this itself). I know that may not be saying all that much,but this is truly a FANTASTIC chapter of Indiana Jones.Read more

Still remembered 13 years later...
Though I haven't seen this episode since it originally aired in 1992, I still see it so clearly in my memory. It is my absolute favorite out of the entire series. I still remember being astounded by the quality of the writing in the moment in which Schweitzer talks to Indy concerning his philosophy of "reverence for life," and thinking that nothing on TV at the time came close to the meticulous production values exhibited in every episode of the program. And probably very few things on network TV today can match it either, if anything (hard to say seeing as I watch barely any TV anymore). I highly recommend at least this episode, but there are many other fine ones as well. I only hope this series will be out on DVD very soon. It will probably look even more marvelous than it did originally!

Indy finally gets it, but forgets it.
I thought, from reading the description, that this would be boring.But it wasn't, not by a long shot.It's probably the best "Young Indy". Action, but above all, Indy learns to care about life!
In the other movies, Indy never seemed to care about human life.In this he learns lots about life, feelings and points of view.This movie should be seen by everyone who can see it!It teaches valuable lessons and isstill a classic Indiana Jones film.Read more

a great movie !
It was an awsome movie it was the first yong indiana jones i ever saw first i watched the temple of doom then i saw raidersthen i saw the the last crusade.the only thing i didnt like was how indys girlfriend was solving all the mystery and indy was a scardy cat and the part with panchovilo lost me to but in all it was a great high adventure film !

A review of the entire series
These comments are based on the entire series as they have been currently released on video.When this show was first broadcast, it was loved by a certain 12-year-old boy (me).It had everything: adventure, love, history, interesting locations.I especially liked the "bookends" of 92-year-old Indy, where people always looked at him as just some old man, and they had no idea the amazing life he had lead.
Indy plays Ned Nickerson
I would have given this 5 stars, because I really did enjoy it very much.But I can't quite get over the fact that for much of the first half Indy whines and follows his girlfriend around reluctantly, as she initiates all the adventure.I can understand that, at 16, Indy isn't going to be exactly the same as when he's older, but really, when he was played by River Phoenix, during the "Last Crusade" prologue that took place in 1912 (four years before this one) he had much more initiative.Read more

Just one question.
Yes, I thought this was a great episode.Action packed, scary and fun.However I have one question for all the "moms" out there who were so shocked and surprised by how dark and scary this episode was when they showed it to their little kiddies... DID YOU EVEN BOTHER TO LOOK AT THE BOX FIRST?!?!?
A great young Indy
I have no clue why so many of you reviewers think this movie is so bad! This is my second favorite Young Indy! (Phantom Train of Doom is my first favorite).The first half of the movie is a fantastic spy story, and after Indy completes his mission, he is sent to Transylvania to find some missing soldiers in the war.He finds much more than missing soldiers, though! He comes face to face with he absolutely terrifying Vlad the Impaler and barely escapes alive!
Definitely not for young children
After reading another review on this site (gypsy18, 5/31/01), I was shocked to see that the reviewer's child had the exact same reaction, almost word-for-word, as did my son.He was equally upset that such violence could have come from the mind of George Lucas.Read more

Aussies show the way with a little help from Indy
A great yarn with a little bit of poetic licence. Although based on a true theatre of operation in the Middle East, Indy gets involved with the Aussie "Diggers" of the Australian Light Horse. He befriends them and become great mates. A ripping yarn with great excitement and well put together. The action could have been a little more intense as it was in the Australian Movie "The Lighthorsemen". Albeit, I enjoyed it and found it pretty accurate for its historical content. The only thing thing it doesn't show is how the British stuffed up, like they did everywhere else during WW1.

Warning: NOT for children
Although this movie has no rating, (and why is that?) I would say it is the equivalent of a PG-13.The film contains quite a bit of violence and violent themes.War scenes.Guns firing.Man falling off cliff including hitting the ground.And the scene that made me turn it off showed a close up of Young Indiana stabbing a man including close-up of knife going in and out of his stomach.Parents beware."Not rated" does NOT mean it didn't deserve one!

The British film "Personal Services" directed by ex-Monty Python Terry Jones is based on the book "An English Madam" by Paul Bailey. The film begins with a disclaimer stating that it is not a true depiction of the life of the infamous British Madam, Cynthia Payne (Madam Cyn) and advises the viewer to read Bailey's book for details of Payne's life. The protagonist of the film is named Christine Painter (Julie Walters)--a harried waitress in a London restaurant, but Christine has a child in boarding school whose fees must be paid, and so Christine earns extra money by renting out rooms and subletting flats to prostitutes. Now, the idea is that the prostitutes will pay Christine rent, but Christine soon discovers that collecting rent is easier said than done, and before too long, Christine faces her landlord empty-handed. The landlord, however, is fully prepared to make an acceptable alternative arrangement, and Christina slides into prostitution. Read more

Fun and light-hearted
I enjoyed this movie and felt good after watching it.Good for adults and children!

A Classic Which Shouldn't Be Forgotten
This is a so-called kid's movie that's way too good for kids. It's based on the book The Wind in the Willows. Mr. Toad (Terry Jones) of Toad Hall loves fast cars, crazy inventions, and all the latest fads. He crashes his cars regularly and is spending more money that he has on his enthusiasms. And it seems the Chief Weasel (Antony Sher) and his cronies have been buying up the land Mr. Toad has had to sell. They're going to tear down Toad Hall and build a huge dog food factory in its place. The Chief Weasel plans that the first ingredients to be processed will be Toad and his friends, the meek but brave Mole (Steve Coogan), the picnic-loving, loyal Rat (Eric Idle), and the grumpy, advice-giving Badger (Nicol Williamson). The movie details with great humor their adventures to defeat the Chief Weasel and save Toad Hall.
