2-0 out of 5 stars Air battle movie best viewed by schoolboy only
I watched this film with great expectation because I found that it was rated with 4 or 5 stars by many reviewers. After one hour of watching I felt very boring and very disappointed. I intended to throw the DVD immediately to the rubbish bin but I hardly finished it to the end. The B-17 bomber in this film was very poorly artificial computer-made. It looks like the aircraft of an computer war game. I think the B-17 is real in the film only when it is rising and landing. Over 99% of the scenes the B-17 is not real. The air battle is not convincing and the scenes are very poorly made also. In one scene, a German fighter collide with a B-17 and the B-17 was broken instantly into two pieces without any fire or smoke. In another scene, the head of a B-17 is severly damaged and an aircrew is throw and ejected like a plastic toy or doll falling down and again with no smoke, burn or fire. All these scenes cannot convince me that it is an air battle. I felt that I was watching a cartoon film. The sound effects are also very poorly made. When you watch a documentary film, the air battle scene scares and horrifies you because the battle is real, it is very intensive and destructive but this film is not.
4-0 out of 5 stars This Rings a Belle.
A re-make or a modernisation without too must revisionism. The original documentary of the bomber crew on their 25th mission over occupied Europe is chilling in its narrative (reports of passing out withour oxygen at 25,000ft and con trails like nothing you have ever seen outside of a dream, not to mention the exciting intercom banter). This film brings human stories of hope and desparation to the crew, with less foicus on the B-17 as a front line weapon.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fanciful account of the final mission of the famous "Memphis Belle"
My first favorite television series was "Twelve O'Clock High" and I had at least two models of the "Memphis Belle" when I was kid, all of which simply reflects the fact that the B-17 Flying Fortress is my favorite airplane. When I was a kid my family was driving through California and there was a B-17 parked out on somebody's front lawn on a ranch and for years I tried to figure out how to go back and see it.A couple of decades later one of the few B-17s still flying came to the Zenith City and I finally got to go inside one (this big bombers are a lot smaller than I ever thought). For all I know that particular B-17 ended up flying in the 1990 film "Memphis Belle."When I had occasion to drive through the city of Memphis, of course I made a point of visiting Mud Island where the "Memphis Belle" was on display (she was moved to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio this October).

One of the most invigorating period adventures to hit the big screen in decades, this lavish, brilliantly directed film drew critical and audience raves when it was released in 1995. Inspired by historical fact and larger-than-life legend, the intelligently scripted story takes place in Scotland in 1713, when Highland farmer and clan leader Rob Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) is forced to borrow money from the duplicitous aristocrat Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) to help his clan survive a harsh winter. When Montrose's vile henchman (Tim Roth) schemes to dishonor MacGregor and his wife (Jessica Lange) and take the money for himself, the rugged Highlander must take courageous action to preserve his integrity. What follows--along with some of the finest sword-fighting ever filmed--is a tale of courage and valor destined to become an enduring movie classic. Tim Roth received a well-deserved Oscar nomination (for Best Supporting Actor) for his indelible performance as the foppish but deadly villain Cunningham, and both Neeson and Lange bring an earthy, sensual quality to their passionate roles. Boasting a wealth of breathtaking scenery and high-intensity action, Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Highland Legend brilliantly portrayed!
Here we have one of those films that is as enjoyable in the tenth or so viewing as the first! The landscape of Scotland is generously displayed throughout. Liam Neeson plays the part of Rob Roy MacGregor, the legendary outlaw of the Highlands, as only he can. I doubt there was anyone else who could have played the part so naturally. In this story, Rob Roy finds himself forced to fight a guerrilla war against Marquis Montrose, a string of events resulting from the criminal acts of the Marquis' vile employee, Archibald Cunningham. Cunningham robbed the clan of a monetary loan, murdered Rob's best friend, and raped Rob's wife. However, Rob Roy, a true Highlander and man of honor, settles this issue by the sword, putting an end to Cunningham! The duel is one high point of the film, another memorable scene is a meeting between rival aristocrats Marquis Argyle and Marquis Montrose, in which Cunningham is introduced. I won't give away the dialogue!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Movie in the Heart ofthe Trossachs
Liam Neesom was wonderful as Rob Roy.The movie left one captivated as it caught the beauty of the Highland Trossachs. To me, this area is one of the most beautiful in Scotland. When I saw Roby Roy's grave, I wanted to cry.I thought back to the movie and all it told us about the man.
5-0 out of 5 stars Well it just stands head and shoulders up there above braveheart...
Don't get me wrong, i love Braveheart but this movie is close to my heart ) My name is Robert Duncan McGregor and this is my family history being told. Historically it makes out Rob better than you might expect, given that he could be a right so-and-so.

This complex and intriguing drama chronicles--with some probable narrative liberties--the chain of events that instigated the provocative Profumo affair, the infamous cold war scandal that toppled Britain's conservative government in the early 1960s. John Hurt stars as charming osteopath Stephen Ward, who grooms a malleable and beautiful teen showgirl, Christine Keeler (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer), to party with his swinging high-society friends. Trouble starts brewing when Christine becomes simultaneously entangled with both a Russian diplomat and a British cabinet minister. Once the media learn of her sexual escapades, the reigning Conservative Party comes under fire and begins seeking a scapegoat to distract the public from the dangerous political implications that the affairs represent. Under Michael Caton-Jones's confident direction, the film generates sympathy for its decadent lead characters, and it intelligently explores how private personal matters become vulgar public affairs when political machinations intrude. 5-0 out of 5 stars A lot of current resonance...
A very well made and often overlooked film, Scandal is seen by many as slightly farcical in the best tradition of British theatre based, bedroom romps. The nature of the "scandal" seems somewhat tame and run of the mill, seen through modern eyes; we have seen many John Profumo's since and Miss Keeler was a prototype for many a foxy minx on the make, De Sanchas, Lewinski, Hall and Clark to name but a few.
5-0 out of 5 stars You'll need a cold shower after this one.....whew!
Erotic! That's it. Review is over! The film pretends to be of historic value but come on.....let's be serious.....it's all about hotter than a pistol Joanne Whalley. She vamps, struts, wiggles, flashes, and sashes her sexuality in a way that hasn't been seen by an actress in a long time! But hold on a minute. If you think you're going to be treated to alot of nudity and raw sex then forget it.....your going to be disapointed. Not in this movie! Corrupt politicians with bimbos.....hey.....we know that tune first hand now don't we? And besides who can really sit through another film of stiff Englishmen without the benefit of some "flash & trash"? The film is hot and yet it's curiously tame considering the subject matter. A captivating work of art. Miss Whalley, and to a lesser degree Miss Fonda, are the stuff that dreams are made of. The montage of the girls getting dressed to Apache is so beautiful and delicious that you will swear that those lips could kiss you right through your TV screen! The bottom line.....don't miss it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The painful fall!
The historic scandal that literally embarrassed during a decade the highest spheres of the British politic, was not more than a simple reflect of a state of things originated perhaps, by the collective reaction to forty years of war. The social behavior works out as a big pendulum: it can prove its huge ability to resist. Along those hard years, four generations gave the best of themselves but the fifth generation simply said no more and somehow the pendulum took the opposite direction: in fact having reached the peak, the psychological answer was evasion and funny diversion, breaking the rules vertical and horizontally. It is not a mere coincidence the presence of so many good movies in the comedy genre. Thatis a remarkable evidence and somehow it reminds the same behavior of the last period of the Greeks or any other example. The comedians appear many times at the end of the expansion of any society: epic, tragedy and comedy.

Editorial Review

He's shallow, he's self-involved--in short (and he is short, too), he's a perfect candidate to be a plastic surgeon. But, as played by Michael J. Fox, he's riding for a fall, and gets it when his car crashes in a tiny South Carolina town. The accident is his fault, so his punishment is doing community service which, in this town, means being the town doctor (because there isn't one). Even as he's chafing at the bit to get to the Beverly Hills practice where he'll be working, he's discovering that small-town life has its rewards. This is a movie that's never quite as funny as you wish, but it still manages to inspire a lot of good will, thanks to a varied cast of veteran actors that includes Barnard Hughes, David Ogden Stiers, and Frances Sternhagen, as well as an intriguing brace of young ones: Julie Warner, Bridget Fonda, and Woody Harrelson. George Hamilton is perfectly cast as Fox's prospective new boss. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For light comic romantic entertainment, it's a winner...
Michael J. Fox, David Ogden Stiers, Woody Harrelson and all the supporting cast members are wonderful in this small, quiet story of a stranded doctor in a seemingly stagnant southern town. It's not a masterpiece, not an award winner, not an enduring example of its genre, but it is fun, and it is sweet, and it offers a nice escape from the troubles of the day. For decent folks, it's a very decent 90-minutes of movie magic.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, immensely entertaining film
Too often, Hollywood directors seem to forget that cinematic success comes in the form of great characters.Doc Hollywood, though, is one of those films that proves the rule. This movie is chock full of great characters, even in some of the smallest of roles - and it's not just the people, for the small town in which the story takes place is quite a character unto itself. The town of Grady is sort of an updated version of Mayberry - idyllic, of course, but nonetheless charming and evocative. It's the kind of place you can only find in the South.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fine acting and locales
A big budget action flick here with FBI agent Sidney Poitier enlisting IRA prisoner Gere to stop a high tech assassin (Willis) from completing a high level assassination. All 3 leads are very good and especially Poitier with Gere mananging an acceptable Irish brogue. It's a very watchable movie but one wishes the plot holes weren't so obvious. This was made in 1997 so it was pre 9-11 but even still, it's a little silly to believe that an FBI agent would leave the First Lady up on a platform to give a speech just to try to capture the villain.

4-0 out of 5 stars A brief comment
Robert DeNiro turns in a fine performance as a dedicated policemen and father who's trying to saving his son from a crime he didn't commit. His job is made all the harder by his estranged relationship with his son, who he hasn't seen in many years. The movie takes place against the backdrop of the once chic city of Long Beach, New York, once a little paradise by the sea, but has since seen better days. Now miles of abandoned old hotels, casinos, and other buildings line the shores, seemingly frequented these days only by junkies, drug dealers, and other outcasts of society, including DiNero's son. DeNiro must battle old prejudices and demons, such as his own father's notorious criminal past, his failed relationship with his son, and a police dept. that has already concluded his son is guilty and is going to bring him in dead or alive. James Franco as DeNiro's junkie son and Frances McDormand also turn in fine performances, although McDormand doesn't get a whole lot of on screen time.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fast paced thriller!
City by the Sea is a great movie!I enjoyed the irony of it.A father, played by Robert DeNiro, is trying to convince his son to turn himself in, while at the same time prove he's innocent!Corruption and Betrayal run high! There are many great actors in this film and it is produced well.I don't understand why more people were not talking about this excellent show when it came out in theaters, I guess everyone has an opinion.

2-0 out of 5 stars DeNiro is only star in this so-so crime drama.
This film is disappointing, considering the acting talent used in it.The story is about a cop whose son gets into some trouble, and is supposedley framed. His father, the cop (DeNiro) must try to stay within the boundaries of his job while at the same time clear his troubled sons name of the crime. It is not very suspenseful and the end result, regardless what avenue they take, is dull. There is no wonder for who really committed the crime, who framed who, or who will come out the victor in the end of the movie. It just falls flat and it's to bad that DeNiro wasted his time and talents being in this film.If you want some great crime drama films that push this to shame, try recent movies like Along came a spider, Man on Fire, or Collateral.Deeper plots without the predictable outcomes. ...

This movie is absolutely incredible.I loved every minute of it.I think it's safe to say that Leonardo Dicaprio is an outstanding actor even at his young age.He and Robert De Niro make a fantastic pair of actors. 5 Stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE !!!
My only regret is that the producers of this DVD did not made any extra features! I would really liked to see some "behind the scene" features about this excellent movie!

4-0 out of 5 stars A DVD question about "This Boy's Life"
I have a friend who "rented" his 57 chevy to the production crew. He was even filmed (looking under the 57 hood) for a scene in Northern Utah that was trimmed from the theatrical release. He asked if there are any "deleted scenes" included in the DVD. I tried to ask over at IMDB, but you have to enter at least two hundred words about the film, or the site won't even accept your post. Good heavens, i'm not Roger Ebert! Thanks in advance for any info! ... Read more

Editorial Review

The most intriguing aspect of Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars no where as good as the origanal but still fun if you let it
bruce willis and richard gere plus sidney poitior in the story of an hit-man out to kill someone in the u.s. and we don't know who. russiaian mob men are looking for payback after u.s. and russian police kill one of the mobs boys in russia. they hire the "jackel" a hit-man who no one has ever seen and ask him to do the job. willis is the killer and he looks mean and enjoys killing. gere is an i.r.a. killer in jail who also has seen the "jackel" and poitior is the f.b.i. man that is tracking the hit-man down. logic never gets in the way of the action as this movie pulls out all the stops to tell this story. i makes no sence at all but it is fun if you let it be. willis is ok , gere's accent slips as much as his acting and poitior is his fine acting self and he never lets his age keep him out of the action . not great but fun .

Editorial Review

In this story, Rob
