5-0 out of 5 stars If Adventure Has a Name...
It must be Indiana Jones! German East Africa, 1916:
5-0 out of 5 stars We did kidnap my father! It's a nightmare!
All right, I'm biased. When I watched the whole series on TV I was only about 7, so my memories of most of the episodes are all but nonexistent."Phantom Train" is one of the exceptions, and the most vivid in my mind.So naturally I enjoyed watching it again, even more than the others. It's great as a breather between "Trenches of Hell" and "Oganga", which are very thoughtful and serious. It is a tad hokey, but in that respect most like the Harrison Ford movies.Indy undergoes character developement, however, which is good. The first half has plenty of action, but Indy learns his lesson of the day, and this lesson actually sticks with him and is seen in the movies. That is, that the ability to improvise is a quality.5-0 out of 5 stars VERY, VERY GOOD VIDEO
I've been an Indiana Jones fan for over six years and this was one of the first young Indy videos I watched.I have seen about half of the episodes available on video and so far this is still my favorite. It had a good story with good acting and great special effects. It is a classic tale of adventure in Africa. In the first part of the video Indy accidently goes on a mission to blow up a mysterious train with a flat-bed mounted cannon that has been shelling allied troops but cannot be found. In the second part of the video, Indy and his army buddy Remmy try to survive the wilds of Africa with an important german military prisoner. They run into hostile bush-men, lions, and are being pursued by the entire German army the whole time.Action-packed and full of surprises along with nice bits of humor in appropriate places this video should delight anyone intereseted in Indiana Jones. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Actually, A 3 1/2 Star Film
No movie in this series will ever top the first "Jurassic Park". That film thrilled audiences with their first glimpse of realistic, inter-acting dinosaurs. That magic feeling, of course, would not last for long, because of the dearth of CGI-enhanced films that followed the film's blazing run in theaters. "Jurassic Park 3", however, is definately an improvement over the second film in the series,"The Lost World", for a few good reasons: first, the film is short and to the point. It's basically a thrill ride to the end. Second, the special effects are just that: special. The dinosaurs are jaw-dropping in their appearance, making some inconsistancies with the other films just a bit more palatable. And third, although I enjoyed the rather Godzilla-like T-Rex attack on San Diego, it was really out of place in the second film, and there was nothing like that in this one. It was good to see Sam Neil back, and Laura Dern, also, if only in a small cameo-type role. As I said, while a true sequel, meaning not as good as the original, it's still highly entertaining in a thrill-park way. The picture transfer is great, the sound clear and sharp. There are interesting bonus features to explore, and overall, this is a solid DVD to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars jp3
THIS MOVIE ALMOST TOPS THE FIRST. HERE ARE THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT:
4-0 out of 5 stars Should have been Jurassic Park II
This is the sort of sequel that should have been made in the first place. The premise is sillier than the first film (which was pretty silly itself), but the characters are appealing and the action is streamlined and intense. Enjoy the ride and try to forget that "The Lost World" ever existed. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars let's make this short and sweet...
This is one of the most boring movies I have ever seen.I knew from the very beginning of the movie that there was no way I was going to be able to stay awake through the whole thing.I was right; I fell asleep about fifteen minutes into it.Recently, I was offered the chance to watch it again.I thought, "OK, I didn't see the whole thing, it might have gotten better, so I'll give it another chance." ... Bad mistake. This little tale about a horse race across a vast desert did nothing to hold my interest for very long.Hidalgo is the name of the horse. So what? That's about as boring as this movie. So why the 1-star markup? Cause the main character is played by Viggo Mortensen, of Aragorn fame in the smash movie series The Lord of the Rings- and I do like Viggo.I did not, however, like this movie. It's kind of fitting it should be set in a desert- cause that's exactly where this movie should be buried, never to bore another wave of audiences again. If you find yourself overworked and in need of a nice long nap, watch Hidalgo; you'll be out in no time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hidalgo
Love this movie, caught some of it on TV one week so then did a search on Amazon and brought the movie. Family entertainment Loosly based on the real life Frank T Hopkins who did more to save the wild Mustang than any other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic film making on a grand scale.A truly epic film.
Hidalgo is based upon a true story, so it's no wonder it's thrilling, truth being stranger than fiction and all.Although it's highly doubtful that everything in the movie actually happened, Frank Hopkins was indeed a real life cowboy, master horseman and rider and he did participate in the great Bedouin horse race of the Middle East known as the "Ocean of Fire" in the 1890's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop being so picky
I'm disliking all the bad press that the second half of this tape is getting. Personally, it's one of my favorites along with two others which have not been released on tape.4-0 out of 5 stars Great first half, strange second half
The first half of this video is great, it starts out with an amusing instance of mistaken identity, as two Austrian princes, who are also French lieutenants, mistake Indy for a delivery boy because he's riding a bike and his uniform is covered up by his coat. They run him off the road with their car, and are later shocked to learn that he's not only not a delivery boy, but that he's a captain, outranking them.Indy, still insulted, isn't impressed to then learn that they are royalty. This doesn't get the relationship off to a very good start, and so of course Indy is assigned to escort them across the border to Austria.4-0 out of 5 stars Confusing plot, but on the whole a good movie
This movie is good on the whole, although it does have a few flaws. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring great family movie
children thru adults will enjoy this movie.it is entertaining, inspiring and teaches good values to all.that combination is rare.
5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Movie
The movie begins with Sputnik and ends the Space Shuttle. The movie tells the story of one family whose youngest son, after seeing Sputnik go across the sky, decided to build rockets. Most of the relationships are not well developed, but the relationship between the father and the youngest son is done well. They may have conflicts, but at the base is love and a growing respect.
5-0 out of 5 stars Quite Unlike the Book
October Sky is a great movie, but the book is quite a bit different, and so much better.Homer (Sonny) Hickam's memoir is fundamentally about the relationship of the town of Coalwood, and his parents, especially his father. It is an intricate tale unlike the simpler version of the movie.Sonny and the Rocket Boys have a 3-year adventure, unlike the few months shown in the movie, and their rockets are much more sophisticated.Sonny's father (actually named Homer, unlike John in the movie) is a driven man, dedicated to keeping his mine safe.Ultimately, he sees Sonny (Homer, Jr.) as a mining engineer, not as a common miner as the movie indicates. The memoir is at turns laugh-out-loud funny and tear-jerkingly tragic. The film has those aspects but not nearly as powerful as the novel, despite the great performances of Jake Gyllenhaal and Chris Cooper. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Please sir, I want some more
If you watch these videos in chronological order (which you should) this provides a fascinating follow up to the cute and funny Spring Break Adventure (even the more serious Mexico half featured jokes like the letter Indy wrote to his dad). The only problem is, that it shouldn't follow directly after like it does. There were two episodes, "Ireland, April 1916" and "London, May 1916" that were not put on video.Instead, we jump from what must be March (in Mexico) to "Somme, Early August 1916" and "Germany, Mid August 1916".One might ask why this was done.5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding - Best of the series
These are arguably the greatest episodes in the series. They are emotional, moving, action packed, and realistic. If there's a knock on the series it's that it's often hokey, and Indy runs into too many famous people. But this episode pulled no punches and delivered on all cylinders. It is so excellent, I rate it better than the last two Indiana Jones movies. 5-0 out of 5 stars A harrowing tale of the horrors of war
The 8th chapter in the Young Indiana Jones series, this is a dark and harrowing look at the horrors of war. The movie is divided into three parts:

4-0 out of 5 stars Really funny
The first half is a hoot the whole way through, it has to be the funniest Young Indy episode. The ending is great; I remember being surprised when I first watched it on TV, so I won't give it away.I'll just say Giulietta isn't as naive as she seemed.5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best in the series to start with
Though the series is plagued with misguided efforts to steer Indy into the company of historical greats, this time Lucasfilm keeps the improbabilities to a minimum. This pleasant surprise allows Indy some interestingcharacter development. This is the only tape in which both hours aredevoted to romantic plot lines.5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
This has to be the best out of the titles released in the UK so far ('Phantom Train of Doom', 'Treasure of the Peacock's Eye', 'Daredevils of the Desert' and this itself). I know that may not be saying all that much, but this is truly a FANTASTIC chapter of Indiana Jones.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still remembered 13 years later...
Though I haven't seen this episode since it originally aired in 1992, I still see it so clearly in my memory. It is my absolute favorite out of the entire series. I still remember being astounded by the quality of the writing in the moment in which Schweitzer talks to Indy concerning his philosophy of "reverence for life," and thinking that nothing on TV at the time came close to the meticulous production values exhibited in every episode of the program. And probably very few things on network TV today can match it either, if anything (hard to say seeing as I watch barely any TV anymore). I highly recommend at least this episode, but there are many other fine ones as well. I only hope this series will be out on DVD very soon. It will probably look even more marvelous than it did originally!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indy finally gets it, but forgets it.
I thought, from reading the description, that this would be boring. But it wasn't, not by a long shot. It's probably the best "Young Indy".5-0 out of 5 stars Action, but above all, Indy learns to care about life!
In the other movies, Indy never seemed to care about human life.In this he learns lots about life, feelings and points of view. This movie should be seen by everyone who can see it!It teaches valuable lessons and isstill a classic Indiana Jones film.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars a great movie !
It was an awsome movie it was the first yong indiana jones i ever saw first i watched the temple of doom then i saw raidersthen i saw the the last crusade.the only thing i didnt like was how indys girlfriend was solving all the mystery and indy was a scardy cat and the part with panchovilo lost me to but in all it was a great high adventure film !

2-0 out of 5 stars A review of the entire series
These comments are based on the entire series as they have been currently released on video. When this show was first broadcast, it was loved by a certain 12-year-old boy (me).It had everything: adventure, love, history, interesting locations.I especially liked the "bookends" of 92-year-old Indy, where people always looked at him as just some old man, and they had no idea the amazing life he had lead.
4-0 out of 5 stars Indy plays Ned Nickerson
I would have given this 5 stars, because I really did enjoy it very much. But I can't quite get over the fact that for much of the first half Indy whines and follows his girlfriend around reluctantly, as she initiates all the adventure.I can understand that, at 16, Indy isn't going to be exactly the same as when he's older, but really, when he was played by River Phoenix, during the "Last Crusade" prologue that took place in 1912 (four years before this one) he had much more initiative.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just one question.
Yes, I thought this was a great episode.Action packed, scary and fun. However I have one question for all the "moms" out there who were so shocked and surprised by how dark and scary this episode was when they showed it to their little kiddies... DID YOU EVEN BOTHER TO LOOK AT THE BOX FIRST?!?!?
5-0 out of 5 stars A great young Indy
I have no clue why so many of you reviewers think this movie is so bad! This is my second favorite Young Indy! (Phantom Train of Doom is my first favorite). The first half of the movie is a fantastic spy story, and after Indy completes his mission, he is sent to Transylvania to find some missing soldiers in the war.He finds much more than missing soldiers, though! He comes face to face with he absolutely terrifying Vlad the Impaler and barely escapes alive!
1-0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for young children
After reading another review on this site (gypsy18, 5/31/01), I was shocked to see that the reviewer's child had the exact same reaction, almost word-for-word, as did my son.He was equally upset that such violence could have come from the mind of George Lucas.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Time to revisit this great classic.
Watching Jumanji with kids under the age of 10 will really put this movie into persective for you. I know its Robin Williams and I know its Jumanji, but its good family entertainment, and on that nobody disagrees.
5-0 out of 5 stars Robin Williams At His Best
Just about every film you will ever watch (with a few acceptions) will have been influenced by another film, and may seem very similar to that film in more ways than one. However, Jumanji is a complete acception to this rule. It is a completely original and fantstic idea for a film, which has become unsuprisingly succesful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Aussies show the way with a little help from Indy
A great yarn with a little bit of poetic licence. Although based on a true theatre of operation in the Middle East, Indy gets involved with the Aussie "Diggers" of the Australian Light Horse. He befriends them and become great mates. A ripping yarn with great excitement and well put together. The action could have been a little more intense as it was in the Australian Movie "The Lighthorsemen". Albeit, I enjoyed it and found it pretty accurate for its historical content. The only thing thing it doesn't show is how the British stuffed up, like they did everywhere else during WW1.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning: NOT for children
Although this movie has no rating, (and why is that?) I would say it is the equivalent of a PG-13.The film contains quite a bit of violence and violent themes.War scenes.Guns firing.Man falling off cliff including hitting the ground. And the scene that made me turn it off showed a close up of Young Indiana stabbing a man including close-up of knife going in and out of his stomach.Parents beware."Not rated" does NOT mean it didn't deserve one!

1-0 out of 5 stars bad
they are insulting other nations in this film. As a turkish youth I felt myself very bad. This is a political film it only aims to insult other nations.. Americans and British people are hero in this film of course.. According to them other nations are natural disasters.. Too bad for human beings.. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific entertainment
(4.5/5 stars)This is a fantasy film set during World War II, with the Nazis chasing jet-propelled backpack technology that will enable their airmen to land in enemy territory. There is even a mock Nazi propaganda film to illustrate the awesome power of this new weapon. In fact, the film really blurs fantasy with reality, with appearances by W.C. Fields and Cab Calloway, among others. Timothy Dalton plays Neville Sinclair, an actor whose life bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Errol Flynn's. Fiction mixed with reality can be amusing because it offers an imaginative alternative to straight fiction and non-fiction. On the other hand, "The Da Vinci Code," "JFK" and the current Bush administration have all proven mixing fantasy and reality can produce downright ugly results. There is some very good action as The Rocketeer, played by the dashing and handsome Bill Campbell, eludes the Nazis and attempts to foil their plot. Jennifer Connelly is radiant as his love interest, Jenny Blake. This is the type of movie where gray areas do not exist; everything is either black or white, good or bad. Along with excellent sets, wardrobes, styles, etc., this aids the film in establishing its nostalgic, 1940s feel. This is a very fun movie for most of the family. Even though there is little objectionable material, some themes might be better suited for ages ten and up.

2-0 out of 5 stars Corny, clunky, a deserved turkey of the early 90s.
The Rocketeer is the cinematic version of all the faux-Deco buildings that have been erected in recent years around Los Angeles, particularly the Miracle Mile area. It's wafer-thin nostalgia masks a chintzy story that can't stand on its own two feet.
4-0 out of 5 stars In many ways, what "Raiders" should have been...
There's a great deal more attention to period detail in "The Rocketeer" -- the clothing, hair styles on men, even the language used, all are more reminiscent of 1930's serials than anything Spielberg did. Not an indictment of Spielberg's work, just a partial explanation for why I enjoyed "The Rocketeer" so much. It's a love letter to Hollywood and to early aviation, and if you actually know a little about these two subjects the movie makes a lot more sense.

Editorial Review

A deft balance between special effects, comedy, and family dynamics made this 1989 film a hit for Disney and spawned both a string of video sequels and a subsequent TV series. Moranis is endearing as the bumbling inventor/father of the Szalinski family. He inadvertently shrinks his own children then throws them out with the trash. They, along with the neighbor kids, must journey back across their own backyard, now an enormous, dangerous distance, to get back to the right height. Much is done with the perils of the lawn, from a wild deluge from the sprinklers to a nasty encounter with the lawnmower and numerous encounters with gigantic insects. A generally kid-friendly, inventive (no pun intended), and entertaining outing. Read more

Fun to watch a show I loved as a kid. My daughters love the show too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Cute Movie! What's The Correct Aspect Ratio? Widescreen Or Fullscreen?
I watched the movie Honey I Shrunk the Kids and I really liked it. This is a really cute movie and the special effects are really good and I like the entire cast, Rick Moranis, Marcia Strassman, Kristine Sutherland, etc, and I would like to buy this movie on DVD but I'm hesitent to buy it because of it being fullscreen nad not widescreen. Is fullscreen the correct aspect ratio or is it a pan and scan edit of a widescreen movie? if this movie was filmed in fullsreen that would be acceptable but if the correct ratio is widescreen than that's what I want. I would even be okay with one of those double sided DVD's where widescreen is on one side and fullscreen on the other side.

5-0 out of 5 stars it's better then the second movie

Editorial Review

A blend of live-action and animation, this film centers on a fearful young boy (Macaulay Culkin) afraid to experience life because he's calculated the odds of an accident for every known activity. Chased by bullies, he winds up at the local library, where a bump on the head sends him into an animated universe, where his best friends are walking, talking books voiced by, among others, Patrick Stewart and Whoopi Goldberg. The Pagemaster (Christopher Lloyd) points the way to the exit, but the boy must first traverse the adventures of literary history, encountering everyone from Dr. Jekyll to Captain Ahab to Long John Silver. The animation is middling, but a worthy message makes this better children's entertainment than you'd expect. How can you fault a movie that encourages kids to pick up a book? Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Underrated Genius!
This film is a masterpiece and is well shot, well animated, well casted, and well acted. Macaulay Culkin turns in a wonderful performance which is his best since the first two Home Alone movies. Christopher Lloyd is also great and evertyone else is accurate too. Give this film a try with an open mind and judge for yourself weather it is your kind of film.
4-0 out of 5 stars AN INTRODUCTION TO THE LIBRARY
Hot off the success of the HOME ALONE movies, Macaulay Culkin is cast as a friendless reclusive little boy who wanders into a strange library to get out of a storm and encounters the Pagemaster, who turns him into an illustration/cartoon.There he meets three books:Adventure (the delightful Patrick Stewart); Fantasy (voice vet Whoopi Goldberg); and the hysterical Horror (a funny Frank Welker). In order to get to the exit sign, Culkin must brave all three genres, where he meets Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (Leonard Nimoy); Long John Silver (George Hearn); and a firebreathing dragon.Ed Begley Jr. and Mel Harris have brief roles as Culkin's parents.
