5-0 out of 5 stars A Year After "Rocky" - and almost as good
"One on One" opened in the summer of 1977 and was basically a nice follow up to "Rocky" the year before. An underdog, in this case, a small standout high school basketball player, enters the big time world of college basketball and is ill equipped to deal with the pressures - and the assortment of difficult characters he encounters (an underage and older woman seductress; a coach from hell; a smug intellectual, etc.). Robby Benson was an important film star for several years and made several high quality films. This film, which he co-wrote, is probably his best (with "The Chosen," another little scene film, a very close second). His characters were decent, warm, smarter than they seemed, and brave. The love story with Annette O'Toole, who plays his college tutor, is believably drawn, and is the spine of the story of a young man's growth toward manhood. There is also plenty of humor in the story - and the basketball scenes, whether in practice or the actual games, have the feel of real college basketball, even today.THIS FILM NEEDS TO BE ON DVD!It's the 30th anniversary, so come on!On ESPN classic, they showed this film with some terrific commentary by Robby Benson and others in the cast, reflecting back on the experience of making the film. This should definitely be included in the DVD version. It was just excellent - and brought back all the feelings I had when I first saw the film.I was in high school too.It was the late 1970's and we were hungry for heroes. And life was definitely simpler (though, of course, it didn't seem so at the time). This is a smart, funny, inspiring film - and it deserves a gold star DVD treatment - with the terrific Seals and Crofts songs included as a CD bonus."My Fair Share," the title song is terrific.A five-star treat, by any standards!

5-0 out of 5 stars DVD now, please!
This is a great movie...it has its campy 70's moments, but when you compare it to the other movies made during that time, it far exceeds many of them.
5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, touching, romantic tale
This is a film I first saw the year it was released and almost 30 years later I am still quoting lines from it and humming the theme song.PLEASE release a DVD version of this marvelous film for a new generation to experience and us "older" viewers (mid 40's)to be reunited with old friends.

4-0 out of 5 stars Broken Chain for your Eric Schewig collection is a must
I am a huge fan of Eric Schweig so I may be a little partial to any of his flicks.I did buy this movie from e-bay for my ERIC collection, (13 flicks total) AAH!! It wasn't bad for a TV flick. What can you really show viewers in just aone or two hour movie?I think it showed how supporting the backstabbing British did the 6 nations in. Eric did a great job in his role and he's not too bad to look at either. LUV YA, ERIC! I think more flicks like this need to be made to show the truth in what the white man did to the Native population. From starving them, paying for indian scalps, shipping them to Florida ,to infecting them with smallpox on blankets. You can get farther in this world with peace and compassion than fear and ignorance.PEACE:)

5-0 out of 5 stars Required viewing
This was a required viewing for a class i took at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical College. Very accurate emergency response recreation. If you are into these "Airport" type movies, you'll be on the edge of your seat with this one. I highly recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars unforgetable
i saw this film a long time ago on british television. for years i could not think of the name, but what i could remember was charlton heston starred, along with many other fine actors, and that i had to have the movie. for the last ten or so years i have searched movie books, video shops etc, to see if i could recognise the title, to no avail. then i went onto an actors website, punched in charlton hestons name, and hay presto, there it was. the plot was so unforgetable and i am so pleased i found it, although i have not managed to retrieve a copy of the movie yet. this movie shows that human beings can pull together in times of disaster, and how well firefighters, and medics can do their jobs. how lucky we are

4-0 out of 5 stars The Miracle In Sioux City
The 1992 TV film A THOUSAND HEROES (which first aired as CRASH LANDING: THE RESCUE OF FLIGHT 232) recounts the events of July 19, 1989, when United Airlines Flight 232, enroute from Denver to Chicago, suffered a catastrophic engine explosion in mid-flight, which totally disabled its ability to stay airborne.Captain Al Haynes was forced to bring United 232 in for a very hard landing at Sioux City Airport in Iowa. The plane blew up and came apart on impact. But in one of the most miraculous outcomes ever, of the 289 passengers and crew onboard, more than 180 managed to survive the horrific ordeal.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Slovik faced death with certainty & acceptance
My father was a WW2 Vet. If I was a male, I probably would have been drafted into the Viet Nam war. But I am female, and the conscientious Objectors were part and parcel of my collegiate aged generation. I do not believe Slovik was a 'whiner' or a coward. He faced death with certainty; front lines meant, as the movie portrayed 'uncertainty' of 'not knowing'.. so when he was made such a sick example of, by the military, he accepted being shot by his own American army as his plight, and, he took and accepted this more than anyone in my generation would have, or since.
5-0 out of 5 stars An ageless story of Generals and Grunts.
One and a half million men were rejected for psychological reasons during WWII. Hundreds of thousands suffered combat fatigue during combat.(Depends whose counting.) A confused General slaps soldiers in a field hospital for breaking under the stress of war. (We all learn that it is only a matter of time before all would break.) The medical men say breaking is normal and Generals say it is an act of cowardice. All this sound and fury boils down to this...Private Slovick the only man to be killed by his country for being human and too honest.5-0 out of 5 stars the execution of one miserable man
i'm an entusiast colector of world war II movies and i never see nothing like that before,i was a military at another country and another war{nicaragua}almost 25,000 of many young people die over there, there where many desertion too,but we never put nobody on front of fithing squad,i admire this private, because he prefer to die by his believe, than kill or be killed in action,in honor to the truth i think he was executed no by his desertion, but like he say by his criminal record,i do think ,the sistem was the one guilty because he recruit the man knowing his record. The problem is "the history don't make honor to desertors". ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great historical flick
This is an awesome movie that accurately describes the struggles of the black students that integrated the all white Central High School in Arkansas. It details what they went through every day, not only in school but out of school.this is a movie about courageous kids that fought for an equal education. This is a film for the whole family, for the history lover, or for anyone that wants to see a good movie.I highly recommend this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent film!
This is a wonderful film that was based on the real life journal teacher Elizabeth Huckaby kept during the 1957 integration that took place at a Little Rock high school. This is an intense and gripping drama that stars the talented Joanne Woodward along with Charles Durning, Henderson Forsythe and William Russ. Be sure to see this film!

4-0 out of 5 stars A GLOSSLY TREAT
The late Margaux Hemingway saw her movie career take a nosedive after the release of this film, while her co-star and little sister Mariel became the toast of the town. But to many cinephiles, she'll always be remembered as the woman in red holding one mean rifle. Margaux plays Chris McCormick, a top fashion model (no stretch at all, here, since she really was a top model at the time) who ends up regretting her decision of having innocently invited her sibling's music teacher (Chris Sarandon of "Fright Night" fame) to her apartment. While she cries rape (with the help of Academy award winner Anne Bancroft as her attorney) the judicial system, however, sees it differently. LIPSTICK is the ultimate B-movie extravaganza. Raw to the bone, it is avant-garde cinema with a glossy exterior. David Rayfeil's script spares no details in degrading women via ultra-violent scenes (one a la "The Accused") and a misogynistic message regarding men and feminine beauty. But as a whole--and not too taken seriously--LIPSTICK is 90 minutes of pure fun. The film has a Russ Myer feel to it, a sort of cinema verite of the late 60's (the ones who lured mostly the male clientele). Margaux Hemingway gives all she's got and comes up almost rosy despite her limited range. She may not be Meryl Streep, but, contrary to popular opinion, her performance is believable. Of course, then-12 year old Mariel do steal the show with her quiet but strong delivery. Every nuance of her emotional face shows the making of a great actress, and she did become one for awhile, while her older sister stumbled and stumbled in forgettable Z flicks. LIPSTICK was indeed the apogee of Margaux's career. Far from being Academy award worthy, it is definitely a fave among lovers of cult movies, and with good reasons. Now all it needs is a deluxe DVD edition with all the extra goodies.-----Martin Boucher
5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Acting, Grauitous Sex And A Non Existent Plot!!!
This movie was intended as a "Star Vehicle" for Margaux Hemingway but in reality is a turkey of a movie. In this film Margaux plays Chris, a model who invites her younger sister's teacher to her house. Then the rape scene which follows lasts about 30 minutes. That is about the entire plot for the movie. Chris' rapist gets acquited then he sexually assualts Chris' sister played by Mariel Hemingway. If you like graphic gratuitous scenes of rape then this movie is for you then maybe you should consider some much needed Therapy and Medication. ... Editorial Review

McKenzie is a remote, understaffed POW camp in Scotland, where an assortment of German fliers, U-boat men, and soldiers are being held prisoner. The restive POWs stage a well-orchestrated uprising in which they essentially take over the camp. When word of the prisoners' siege gets back to British military higher-ups, they assign rogue Irish officer Captain Connor (Brian Keith) to get to the bottom of things. The Germans have been receiving orders directly from Berlin that call for 28 of the submariners to escape and return to the Deutschland's U-boat fleet. The Germans are led by Schlütter (Helmut Griem), an intelligent, articulate graduate of the Hitler Youth; they have devised an elaborate tunnel and a plot to take them to the Scottish coast, where they will rendezvous with a U-boat to take them back to Germany. The hard-drinking Connor learns of the plan, and stakes his career on letting the Germans escape and tracking them down.Keith is excellent as Connor (though his Irish brogue comes and goes), locked into a three-way battle of wills with the determined Schlütter and the stuffy, by-the-book CO of the camp. The movie's pace and suspense swell as Connor's gambit plays out and the Germans make good their escape plans, all set against the breathtaking scenery of rural Scotland. With intelligent, believable characters and tough direction, this is a sorely neglected World War II POW drama that compares well with better-known filmssuch as Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 'The Mckenzie Break' [1970] DVD is dynamic and well paced...
'The Mckenzie Break' [1970] DVD is dynamic and well paced, and has been digitally transferred in remarkably good condition. Another alternative film in the in the genre of 'The Mckenzie Break,' 'Stalag 17,' 'The Great Escape,' Hart's War,' `Andersonville,' `Empire of the Sun,' `Prisoners of the Sun,' `The Bridge on the River Kwai,' `King Rat,' etc., is 'The Good War' [2004] DVD. Although 'The Good War,' starring Robert Farrior, Roy Scheider & Luca Zingaretti, among others, and written and directed by Giorgio Serafini, pales in comparison, it offers another view of an Axis POW camp in the US [Texas]. Shot in Bulgaria and Utah, 'The Good War' likely will not win the hearts/minds of lovers of the genre; however, based on a true story, it provides an alternatively engaging, if not interesting, perspective that has been somewhat overlooked. Recommended for only the diehard fans of the POW genre and the curious WWII genre viewer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Battle of wits in classic POW drama - recommended
Right from the start you know that THE McKENZIE BREAK will not be like any other POW movie. We see British troops guarding the camp for German POW's. And in the opening minutes the tension is firmly established with the British attempting to shackle 25 officers of the Reich in retaliation for a similar action by Germany - an effort the Germans refuse to cooperate with. It's a clever device and sets the tone perfectly for what director Lamont Johnson sought to do in not glamorizing war "as a game."
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, but who wrote Amazon's plot synopsis??????
A very good and entertaining action movie, with a bit of a twist in that it is taken from a different point of view with German POWS in a British camp.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gore Vidal's "Lincoln"
I am so thankful I ignored the negative reviews!!
4-0 out of 5 stars A more true picture of Lincoln than some would like to see..
But, more historically correct.Lincoln was a politician. He never set out to free the slaves. He actually offered leading free Blacks the opportunity to take the slaves to a new American colony in South America because he never thought ex-slaves would have a chance. There was corruption in his Administration.First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln probably sold the text of the "State of the Union" address to the New York Times. She also kept 'ghost' employees on the White House payroll to pay for her extravagances in remodeling.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Shining Lincoln Shows Tarnish, Too
Though made drearily for television, this film has a number of elements that is ahead of its time. Sam Waterston's savvy, almost hippie-like Lincoln is not at all the "great ape" that many of Lincoln's detractors claimed. He is like the true Abraham Lincoln. With the high-pitched Kentucky squeak in his voice (like Lincoln), Waterston is simply riveting- as Lincoln himself must have been. His terrible screech of pain during the height of the Civil War is something I had always imagined he did several times. Waterston hypnotizes with this Emmy-worthy portrayal. The facts in the film are blurry at times, the direction is plodding, the lighting is too dark- and Mary Tyler Moore as Mary Todd Lincoln must be the casting blunder of the 20th century. Yet all involved give terrific performances. Too bad there wasn't more LINCOLN to this "Lincoln". But all in all, it is the must-see for any interested viewer. ... Read more

The pilot, the last (or one of the last) episode, an episode about Chinese railworkers, and an all together weird episode. I hadn't seen any of these! 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!!
This movie tells the story of a mountain boy who goes from runnin' moonshine to entering local demolition derbies and dirt races to earn money for his family.Eventually, our Hero, Elroy Jackson Jr. makes it to the heights of the sport, although that is not covered in the movie.
5-0 out of 5 stars Last American Hero
This is 5 stars if you are a true race fan. Otherwise, it's still an interesting story. This film is loosely based on Tom Wolfe's essay about the younger days of Junior Johnson, although for some reason they changed his name for the film. (Notice, though, that Junior himself was a paid racing consultant on the film.) The race footage is very well done and there is some good footage from the old Southern 500. Bridges and Busey are a lot of fun to watch together as well.If you like stock car racing and wonder what the old days were like when the sport was still developing, you'll love this film. Only pity is it's not on DVD. 5-0 out of 5 stars the last american hero

2-0 out of 5 stars Ehhh...
This video is alright. Eric Roberts is not very believable as a young school aged boy, and his physical acting during the painting and symphony scenes is distracting and overdone. The video has elements not included in the story, perhaps to make Paul seem a more humane character than the cold portyal in print. In the written story, he seems to simply shut out his father and look down on his peers with an aloof disdain. However, the movie shows a boy who tries to please his father; a boy treated cruelly by his classmates. Though nicely filmed and authentic in appearance, the film tries too hard to accomplish what the story did not.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This is film is based on of one of the finest short stories ever written. Eric Roberts is nothing short of brilliant as the young man I always thought had to be the prototype for Holden Caulfield. The sensitivity & simplicity of this film is to be commended because it never would have worked as well as it does otherwise. This movie should definitely be seen by a far wider audience. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely chilling!
YOU'LL LIKE MY MOTHER is actually a quote from an army draftee to his new bride, Francesa Kinsolving (Patty Duke). A premature death prevented him from having the opportunity to actually introduce them. So the expectant widow makes a journey to meet, in many ways, an unknown family. All of this you discover in the first few moments of the movie. What follows is one of the most chilling thrillers I've ever seen.
5-0 out of 5 stars very good thriller
Patty Duke gives a wonderful performance and Richard Thomas is nothing like John Boy Walton! This is a very well made and suspenseful movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not the John-Boy we know and love
Richard Thomas comes out of Duluth's Congdon Mansion woodwork to pester a young Patty Duke in this 1972 pre-slasher thriller. He's more like "The Shining"s Jack Nicholson than John-Boy Walton. "You'll Like My Mother" is a variation on the Captive In A Snow Storm theme that works very, very well. Not a good palliative for cabin fever, as it will induce more anxiety than it cures, but be brave! Turn down the lights, stoke up the fireplace, get some Hot Chocolate, and meet "Mother." Or be really, really brave and make it a Triple Feature: "You'll Like My Mother," "Misery," and Jack's "The Shining."Reviewed by TundraVision ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Patty Duke's best TV movie
I have watched this tape about 5 times and I still enjoy it.BRING IT TO DVD, for goodness sake!My VHS tape won't last much longer.

4-0 out of 5 stars My first understanding of what racism is
This is one of my favorite tv movies of the seventies which is about racism in the south. The performances of the two lead actors are excellent. Patty Duke won a richly deserved Emmy Award for her role showing that her Oscar for the 'Miracle Worker' was not just a fluke. Al Freeman Jr. should of have won as well but that's Hollywood. This film opened my eyes to the real world showing me how ignorant people can really be. Unfortunately, things have not changed much since its release, however, it's still a great film to watch and analyze!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best TV Film of 1970
Granted, I am biased in that I have been a long-time fan of Ms. Duke's, dating back to 1962.But I am objective enough in my observations as a student of film, and a video producer myself, to realize - and highly recommend - the excellence of this splendid television production, adapted from the novel by David Westheimer. 4-0 out of 5 stars not for all taste, but i really liked it
ok,so this isn't the best sci-fi movie ever but it really is fun,if you can get into it. this adventure looks like a cross between "road warrior" and "alien" as it tells the story of a bounty hunter wolfe(peter strauss, tring hard but just not han solo) landing on a planet ravaged by plage to rescue three ladies who crashed there and are being held hostage by the strangest villian ever overdog(michael ironside(looking like a borg and being a grade a ham)! young molly ringwald is on hand as is ernie hudson to help strauss get the girls back.slow in places and some really strange encounters with the planets other citizens make it a mixed bag,but as i said if you can get into the spirit of fun you may find that you like this one also! give it a try!

2-0 out of 5 stars It is pretty bad, even for a B movie
This movie is so bad that it is almost fun, not quite but almost. The movie is about a down on his luck adventurer/bounty hunter named Wolff (Peter Strauss) who must find three beauties who have been stranded on a planet and captured by some weirdo named Overdog (Michael Ironside).Along the way Wolff meets up with Nikki (Molly Ringwald) who is a local urchin who agrees to help him for food.I won't bore you with anymore about the plot, because there isn't any more.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great Sci-fi classic
This is agreat sci-fi movie, anyone who likes the movies more into the "Mad Max" scenerio will love this.Given the year it was made the special effects are not bad, the plot is simple, lots of action, heroics and almost cheesy hero music.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best television detective series ever made!
PETER GUNN remains a television landmark. A half-hour show with enough material for a feature film in every episode. A groundbreaking marriage of narrative and music--many scenes play like Henry Mancini music videos (from the era when Mancini was cutting great jazz tracks with talent like Shelley Manne). The series' low budget is cleverly disguised behind the minimalist film-noir atmosphere. Blake Edwards created the series in response to the poor television handling of his RICHARD DIAMOND radio show--many episodes were actually rewritten from RICHARD DIAMOND radio scripts! Edwards proved he was an authentic successor of Hammett and Chandler (simply working in a different medium). Gunn is sophisticated, amusing, classy, tough, and always likable. His friendly relationship with Police Lt. Jacoby was a welcome change from the hard-boiled stereotype of P. I.'s who hated corrupt and/or stupid cops. The racy (for the 50's) banter with his night club singer/girlfriend and the bizarre, comic-relief contacts round out the format for this great series. The only complaint with this box set is the poor quality of the picture (it helps explain the low price). Collectors take note that three of the ten episodes were previously issued by Rhino Home Video about ten years ago. A must for mystery fans--PETER GUNN was Blake Edwards at his creative pinnacle.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not A Bad Deal!
These are the only videos currently available for the vintage television series, "Peter Gunn", starring Craig Stevens. They are not too easy to find and Amazon.Com is one of the few places I've seen them available. This is a box set of five (5) videotapes with two (2) thirtyminute episodes per tape for a total of ten (10) episodes. To begin, Ibought this set with a little bit of apprehension.First, the price forthe five tapes was very inexpensive ($15.83).Second, they are distributedby a company that I am unfamiliar with, Diamond Entertainment Corporation. However, for the price of $15.83 for ten episodes, I thought I would takemy chances.Well, the episodes themselves were no surprise, your basicclassic late 1950's/early 1960's detective show. The show was filmed inblack and white which adds a film noir effect. This, combined with jazzybackground music by Henry Mancini, are a "cool" combination. This is what "Peter Gunn" is known for.As for the quality ofthe tapes, well, they were okay. These are not digitally remastered copiesby any stretch of the imagination, but the quality was decent. In fact, Iwas expecting a lot worse.Belive me, I've paid a lot more and seen a lotworse. With this in mind, if you like Peter Gunn or vintage detectiveshows, go for it! ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Hardly stellar...
"Groundstar" is a top-secret government space project, whose security has been breached, by Welles, one of its employees (Michael Sarrazin).Escaping the facility with secret information, the man is severely injured, and when captured has no memory of who he is.George Peppard is Tuxan, a hardened, single minded, government investigator in search of answers.Nicole (Christine Belford) is a bystander drawn into the situation, as Tuxan attempts to unlock the secrets within Welles's mind. 3-0 out of 5 stars This one has TV movie stink all over it....
George Peppard plays a character named Tuxan, who is responsible for uncovering the break-in and theft of highly classified information at a government facility called Groundstar. He uses any and all means necessary to do this, including hidden cameras, hidden microphones, and 24 hour surveillance. He has complete control most of the time, and absolute authority to find the information he needs in order to protect the United States against foreign interests that may try to undermine the government by stealing precious secrets.
5-0 out of 5 stars Now there's something you don't see everyday
A good film, Peppard as Tuxan in a role that would resemble 2 of his roles on TV (Thomas Banacek that year, and Hannibal Smith of The A Team, 10 years later). The ending is that of a classic suspense film. The DVD version by the way is cheaper than most stores are offering the VHS copy (if you can find it) so get it while you can. Note Christine Belford, the woman down the road who falls for Sarazin also starred in Banacek, coincidence? ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars not too true
Even though I like Jeff Goldblum he is not Ernie Kovacs. I think they could have found a different and better actor to play him. 2-0 out of 5 stars I'd like to say "Close, but NO cigar"...
...but sadly, it's not even close enough for that.4-0 out of 5 stars A good True story film
Jeff golblum does an excellent job playing the title in the film.the films about a hollywoodlegend whos wife kidnaps his children and he must do whatever it takes to find them. Well acting job by everybody. Cloris Leachman in an emmy winning performance. Also, Soleil Moon Frye who is in the last ten minutes of the film is charming and probably will make you cry. I thin she was only 7 or so, around that young age. Just a great film. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the coolest detective series ever made.
If I had to compare Craig Stevens' suave demeanor as Peter Gunn with any contemporary actor of today that actor would be Pierce Brosnan. Peter Gunn had a style all it's own from the clothes that the character wore to theincidental music and lighting of the show itself. I remember as a youngchild watching this show and thinking how cool this guy really was.Theyjust don't make shows like that anymore. What a shame!!! ... Read more
