Predictable, middling "romantic comedy"...
This is a rather bland film.It is the usual boring, insipid romantic comedy that Hollywood should stop making, as they are so silly and unbelievable.Janeane Garofalo, who I consider an immensely intelligent person, is not really right here.She has a disdain throughout the film (except when she turns on the sarcasm, which is the real Janeane), like she doesn't really believe in the material.She's far too smart and cynical to really pull this kind of film off, even though, if they cast another actress, it would still be a middling film.The film is not horrible, but it's nothing really special.The biggest asset it has is that it's filmed in Ireland.The locations are magnificent, and the filmmakers should be commended for shooting there.The film would be absolutely abysmal if it was shot somewhere else.

"The Matchmaker" is a charming comedy set in rural Ireland and starring an unlikely heroine: Janeane Garofalo, better known as a stand-up comedienne who's worked with Ben Stiller, SNL, and Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion. Janeane stars as Marcy Tizard, harried assistant to Senator John McGlory in the middle of his reelection campaign. The campaign isn't going well, and McGlory and his chauvinistic, power-hungry handler Nick (Denis Leary) send Marcy to Ballinagra, Ireland to look up the senator's Irish roots in a bid to connect with Irish-American voters.

How to find a personality by slot car racing
Anthony Hopkins is the efficency expert.In this movie he is to decide if an old shoe factory is to be closed and the staff fired.When he first arrives, he's ready to close the factory, but as the movie progresses he finds that the workers are more useful that he first thought.As the movie progressed he moved from a man who was just as empathetic as the character he portrayed in "Nixon" to someone who actually relates to other human beings...the funny part is that a slot car race at the local club is the act that finally fosters a change in him.The movie drags in spots but I think it was done intentionally to give a laid back contrast to the hard charging but souless expert. INTERESTING LESSON ABOUT BUSINESS, GLOBALIZATION, LIFE.
Flawless production, coupled with sparse (which is unfortunate) musical selections of the Sixties, this unsung but gratifying little film captures beautifully the discovering/rediscovering of true, basic human needs from the vantage point of two separate generations and social classes. Read more

Still a great movie, raw, funny and worth having in your Aussy collection !

By the director of Strictly Ballroom, with the same quirky point of view and more than a whiff of satire - this is genuinely funny, human, and ultimately kind. Unlike the ballroom "types," the folks in this movie are recognizable as real people.

An UnlikelyBut Wonderful Match..Made In Ireland!
Funny and romantic, sweet and charming, an unlikely but brilliantly witty leading lady and the beauty of Ireland combine to make this little film a definite keeper! This one very much reminds me of those wonderful romantic screwball comedies of the 30's and 40's.
Can't Help Falling in Love with the Story
This was a great movie. The ending was totally predictable, especially after you see Sean standing on the car door watching Marcy's plane fly overhead. You just know he's going to come to Boston after her. And Nick sure had it coming throughout the entire movie. It was a beautiful romantic comedy, one you could watch over and over again, and just keep falling in love with the characters.
