Remember the outfit Cher wore to the Oscars when she won an Academy Award for her performance in this 1987 film? Ay-yi-yi. The actress' more retiring character in this infectious comedy leaps several psychological hurdles just giving her hair a permanent. But then the original screenplay by John Patrick Shanley (Read more

Placed an order from your OTC Business (shampoo), never recieved it; however, on the plus side; I was kept informed of the situation.
5-0 out of 5 stars A timeless favorite!
I bought this DVD to replace my aging VHS version. Cher and her family are hilarious in this love story of New York Italians living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The late Vincent Gardenia is perfectly cast with his grim facial expression and his own serious fantasy of a little extramarital fling. Cher as the Cinderella character and a very young Nicolas Cage as her Prince Charming is skinny, has some hair, and waxes poetic on the trials of love. Olympia Dukakis is superb as the wise, yet cynical mother and the whole story will leave your sides aching from laughter and even a few tears.

5-0 out of 5 stars Moonstruck Fan
Moonstruck is without a doubt one of my all-time favorite movies. If you love romantic comedies, they don't get any better than this. Cher does an awsome job in the film, as does Olympia and the rest of the cast. This movie never fails to brighten my day! The humor in the film wonderful... ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Pre-Détente Cold War Tensions Sent Up in a Now-Quaint Period Comedy
Some of the bloom is off this relatively genial 1966 comedy that satirizes Cold War-era attitudes well before détente was established between the two sides. Directed by Norman Jewison, the film now has a relatively prosaic quality that makes the then-alarming situation between a group of Soviet soldiers and the townsfolk on an island off Massachusetts not terribly exciting. Adapted by William Rose from a book by Nathaniel Benchley, the story concerns a Russian submarine that runs aground on a sandbar on U.S. soil. Eight crewman led by Lt. Rozanov are dispatched to find a boat big enough to pull the submarine free. They first encounter a New York family vacationing on the island, a musical comedy playwright named Walt Whittaker with his wife and son. The Whittakers gradually overcome their fears to help the men out but not before the rest of the town is up in arms about a perceived Russian invasion. It all leads to a tense confrontation, but a surprise turn provides all with a greater sense of their brotherhood and the value of peace.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thank the Russians for coming!
This movie is great for anyone with a sense of humor. Everyone in it gave it 110% and made this movie the best it could be. It's the kind of movie you'll watch again and again, just to laugh.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming
We enjoyed this film in the theaters long ago and I found as many laughs watching it again. For the younger viewers (under Bay of Pigs age) it may have lost some of the political nuances. But would still be amusing. ... Read more

Millionaire businessman Thomas Crown (Steve McQueen) is also a high-stakes thief; his latest caper is an elaborate heist at a Boston bank. Why does he do it? For the same reason he flies gliders, bets on golf strokes, and races dune buggies: he needs the thrill to feel alive. Insurance investigator Vicky Anderson (Faye Dunaway) gets her own thrills by busting crooks, and she's got Crown in her cross hairs. 1-0 out of 5 stars As bad as it gets....
If you need a reminder of all that was wrong with the American culture in the 1960's, check out this VERY DULL flick. Ludicrous and demeaning fashions (only for the female, of course), sparse and meaningless dialogue, gimmicky cinematography that dates the film as surely as the old Don't-squeeze-the-Charmincommercials date TV, and shallow-shallow-shallow characters. The over-loud and intrusive music grates on one's nerves. McQueen has the good grace to appear embarrassed in all of his "too cool" scenes, and Dunaway was likely just grateful for a job at that time. This was someone's confused idea of entertainment that wasn't.

5-0 out of 5 stars You kids could use a little '60's attitude.
Reading the reviews of others here, I'm beginning to wonder where we children of the 60's went wrong. In the spirit of examining this movie, I ask: Have you kids no sprit of adventure, no instincts to rebellion? Thomas Crown exhibited in spades the exact opposite of the conformity and benign contentment that I sense with some of the reviewers of this flick. In short, this guy was ALIVE!! Sure, some of the dialogue, etc. is dated. So will that of 2005 be in thirty years, I assure you. But Mr. Crown was more alive in his Boston-Brahmin prime than, I suspect, many of the reviewers are in theirs. Or maybe its just the times--we seem to be living in the '50's, redux. Sad. Anyway, buy this movie already and learn. Better yet, make yourselves a nice cold martini [if you know how] and get into the spirit of this. If you have a nice, sexy-icy mistress available [Ms Dunaway, where are you?] then you're ready for the ultimate Tommy Crowne experience. Go for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ice, just like ice!
All the kudos usually goes to Bullit, released the same year, yet with this movie, McQueen, the King of Cool, comes of age as an actor, at the height of his power as the No.1 Box office Hollywood star. Commonly regarded by critics as a triumph of style over substance, Jewison crafted a movie for the age and drew from McQueen the kind of performance of which few thought him capable. True, Dunaway's outfits (and Burke's hats) do cement the movie pretty firmly into its time period but anyone coming new to this movie who wasn't around at the time it was made has ample compensation in the luminosity of the stars, the fabulous jazz inspired Michel Legrand soundtrack, a gem of a performance from Jack Weston, as Erwin, and the famous chess game scene. Through the filter of McQueen's performance in the movie, picturing Brosnan as Crown in the recent remake is even more ludicrous than trying to picture Alec Baldwin as Doc McGraw: watch out for the scene in which Crown sets the 'ball rolling' by phoning up the members of the 'gang' he's hired to carry out the heist and then reflect on the observational skills of his detractors. His acting in this movie was matched only by that of his performances later in Papillon and the Getaway. Ultimately, the movie has stood the test of time and will continue to be watched long after DVDs of the Brosnan remake are gathering dust, deservedly, on the shelves of charity shops up and down the country. ... This 1967 film took home lots of Oscars for its fascinating drama about a Philadelphia detective (Sidney Poitier) who assists a redneck Southern sheriff (Rod Steiger) in solving a murder. A study in racism that ebbs a bit through the collective and shared need between a black man and a white man who don't want to be working together, the film continues to strike a chord today. Steiger is a mass of snarling danger, Poitier a bundle of nerves covered in class. Norman Jewison (Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Still great fun due to the Poitier-Steiger pairing...
The racism in this film may be a bit dated now, even in the deep south, where blacks holding high positions in police work is no longer a novelty. The movie, however, still holds my attention when I find it on television, although I must have seen it 20 times since its first release. I like Steiger's work best, but Sidney is also at a high level here. The supporting cast is uniformly good as well. If you have never seen this, take a rental and enjoy yourself. The film's success eventually led to a multi-season TV series starring Carroll O'Connor, and that had some good moments, too, but never equalled the big screen version.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vintage classic 60's film on racial tensions with superb acting.
In The Heat Of The Night (1967) Rod Steiger and Sydney Poitier team up in study of racial politics in a sleepy Southern town. Steiger won an Oscar as the prejudiced lawman who begins to question his own motives after being outclassed by Poitier during a difficult murder investigation. Watch closely when Steiger evolves from a racist bigot (which he never really was, deep in his heart) to a man who trusts a "colored" enough to pour out his alcoholic-soiled soul to Tibbs, this is the heart-cliching scene which nabbed Steiger the Golden Prize.

This Broadway hit gets a solid film treatment by director Norman Jewison, but that can't make up for the weaknesses of the script (which were as true onstage as they are here). Jane Fonda plays a chain-smoking shrink sent to a convent to do a psychological evaluation of a novice (Meg Tilly) who gave birth to a baby and then killed it in her little room. Was it a virgin birth? A miracle? And what of the bloody stigmata that seem to spontaneously appear on her hands? Fonda also finds herself clashing with the Mother Superior (Anne Bancroft) over the line between faith and science. But writer John Pielmeier can't flesh this out beyond an idea; in the end, the solution is a disappointingly earthbound one that even the strong acting in this film can't elevate. Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars ONE WONDERS...
One wonders why there was a barrage of attacks against Mel Gibson's The Passion supposed "anti-Semitism," and not one peep about this open and vicious attack on Christianity by certain "Hollywood types."
2-0 out of 5 stars A failure in many respects
Jane Fonda, whom I respect highly as an actress, cannot save this dud.Neither the score nor the cinematography is memorable. Many scenes revolve around the fact that Dr. Livingstone is a smoker, which is a very flimsy hook upon which to hang a film. This film did not hold my interest--at several points I was consciously bored and had to exert will-power to finish watching it.Moreover, the views of psychiatric practice and hypnosis are wholly unrealistic. It seems this film could not decide what to be, and certainly lacked the courage to demythologize its subject.

4-0 out of 5 stars Surpisingly Good Film
I was not expecting this film to be as good as it was.Fonda is great as the chain smoker who is determined to get to the bottom of the secret of the dead baby.Meg Tilly is truly a great actress and it shows in this film.It brings memories of Name of the Rose with Connery and Slater which deals with Murder in a monestary in the 16th century. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Scenery and Stellar Co-Stars Overshadow Tomei's Intended Audrey Wannabe Vehicle
Poor Marisa Tomei. She made the fastest career beeline from the B-List to the A-List and back to B thanks to this overly formulaic 1994 romantic comedy. Directed by Norman Jewison in a dreamy manner that seems designed to repeat the unexpected success of "Moonstruck", the movie is placed squarely on Tomei's shoulders to carry right after her questionable Oscar win for "My Cousin Vinny", and she is unfortunately given a petulant, irritating character to play here. As Faith Corvatch, she is a Pittsburgh schoolteacher about to get married when destiny seems to interject with the appearance of a man whose name, Damon Bradley, was predestined to be the identity of his soul mate. A chance phone call leads her impulsively to Italy where she leads a bumbling Clouseau-like chase to find him. Accompanied by her sensible but supportive sister Kate, she misses him in Venice but thinks she lands him in Rome. He instead turns out to be a designer show salesman named Peter Wright. Smitten with Faith, Wright decides to help her find Damon but only to make her realize that he is her soul mate.
4-0 out of 5 stars "The truth is, you make your own destiny."
This is the story of a school teacher named Faith (Marisa Tomei) who believes in destiny and true love. When she was a young girl a Ouija board and a fortune teller separately came up with the name of Damon Bradley as her future soul-mate. 14 years later, days before her wedding, she's trying out her wedding gown when she picks up the phone and speaks with an unknown friend of her fiance's - by the name of Damon Bradley. Faith, still in her wedding gown, trails the name all the way to the airport and ends up flying to Italy. And into Robert Downey, Jr's arms.

I'm an avid movie maniac.I have certain films that I can only watch at certain times of the year, and do, every year.Other Peoples Money, starts off my fall movie viewing, after Halloween of course.I love the new England Autumn charm of this film. The story is good, dialogue clever and the chemistry between Miller and DeVito is scary. An unlikely romanic couple if ever there was.A Classic in my book!

5-0 out of 5 stars OPM- Used in my Business Management classes...
There is no nudity in this movie but there are some vaguely sexual discussions.Even some adults might miss the true points being made but you may want to consider that before allowing children to see OPM.
5-0 out of 5 stars New England Wire & Cable
Other People's Money is a wonderful movie, full of smart dialogue, good music, and a terrific Danny DeVito performance. DeVito is his usual funny, and easy-going self, while Gregory Peck is a strong-willed patriarch.Very good stuff there. The weakest performance is from Penelope Ann Miller, who isn't really convincing as the corporate attorney, but the material is so good that it saves the movie. This is a 5 star film, however, it loses a 1/2 star, because of the last scene, which feels a bit tacked on.Otherwise, a smart and funny film from the director of Moonstruck. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Challenge of Eric Stoner
Stud Poker has always been as American as Hot Dogs and Coca-Cola. There is a comfortable, sophisticated and mystical feel to the stories which deal with gamblers. From the cool jazzy world of New Orleans, comes the story of Eric Stoner (Steve McQueen) who believes he has got what it takes to beat "The Man" (Edward G. Robinson, in one of his finest roles) known as Lancy Howard. The stakes are much higher than the poker pots they play to win. For Eric, there is the fame and prestige of being called 'The Man', the very best when it comes to playing cards. Even his girl-friend is second in the ambitious rise of the talented poker player. The 'Man' on the other hand has a formidable reputation to safeguard, whilst the 'Kid" has youth, vitality and considerable skill to possibly unseat the one individual who hold court over the green felt world of cards. In a marathon-like winner-take-all, the two fathom the other's resolve. With the memorable talents of Karl Malden as Shooter, Rip Torn as William Slade, Jack Weston as Pig, Cab Calloway as Yeller, Ann-Margret as Melba and Tuesday Weld as Christian, the film evolves into a classic from sheer star power. ****

4-0 out of 5 stars classic poker film set in New Orleans
OK, first of all, I live in New Orleans and I play poker. This is a movie about playing poker in New Orleans, so naturally, I eventually came across this film.I really enjoyed it, but would agree that it is not the best movie ever. The scenes of New Orleans are great. The poker is so-so.It is all 5 card stud, a game no longer played.A nice treat was the feature commentary by Phil Gordon who has a few insights on "making the fish as uncomfortable as possible".Also there is a featurette about how to cheat at cards and trick shuffling by a pro that is impressive.Every poker player should watch this movie if only to get the references to it that pop up over and over again (see first few pages of Dan Harrington's tournement stategy book (forget which volume)).

Editorial Review

This rousing musical, based on the stories of Shalom Aleichem, takes place in pre-revolutionary Russia and centers on the life of Tevye (Topol), a milkman who is trying to keep his family's traditions in place while marrying off his three older daughters. Yet, times are changing and the daughters want to make their own matches, breaking free of many of the constricting customs required of them by Judaism. In the background of these events, Russia is on the brink of revolution and Jews are feeling increasingly unwelcome in their villages. Tevye--who expresses his desire for sameness in the opening number, "Tradition"--is trying to keep everyone, and everything, together. The movie is strongly allegorical--Tevye represents the common man--but it does it dexterously, and the resulting film is a stunning work of art. The music is excellent (it won Oscars for the scoring and the sound), with plenty of familiar songs such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "If I Were a Rich Man," which you'll be humming long after the movie is over. Isaac Stern's violin--he provides the music for the fiddler on the roof--is hauntingly beautiful. And despite the serious subject matter, the film is quite comedic in parts; it also well deserves the Oscar it won for cinematography. Read more

This entertaining film adaptation of the great musical is a true classic that you can watch with the whole family.Albeit a bit long (about 3 hours), the storyline is excellent, and can be appreciated by ALL cultures and ethnic or religious backrounds.Topol as 'Tevye' is perhaps one of the best all-time perfect character casting fits ever on film! The video and audio quality of this remaster is impressive as well, as are the DVD extras. If you are a classic film buff, and/or just want a great movie to share with your family, this should be in your collection.

Editorial Review

Art imitates life in this romantic comedy, which casts Reynolds and Hawn as a successful Hollywood screenwriting team. Their harmonious working and romantic relationship goes south when they decide to get married after years of living together. Written by and based on the lives of writers Barry Levinson and Valerie Curtin, the film is a decidedly bittersweet affair: after all, Levinson and Curtin got married, then divorced, just like the characters in the movie. Consequently, there's less real humor than kidding as the relationship develops cracks, chinks, and leaks, before foundering altogether. Still, Reynolds and Hawn have a likable chemistry because neither is trying too hard. Watch for a particularly funny and crass cameo by Ron Silver, as a big-shot director they wind up working for. 3-0 out of 5 stars Chop Off the Ends and it's Pretty Good
Based on the real-life experiences of Valerie Curtin and Barry Levinson, this 1982 romantic comedy works best in the middle, when it's on the road. Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn are longtime screenwriting partners and roommates until Burt pushes for marriage. Goldie reluctantly agrees, and immediately after the civil ceremony the couple launches on a lengthy road trip to meet each other's parents. The trip forms the lion's share of the film, and much of it works quite well. Jessica Tandy & Barnard Hughes (as Goldie's parents in Buffalo) and Audra Lindley & Keenan Wynn (as Burt's folks in northern Virginia) absolutely steal the show. Before and after these stayovers, however, the film falls a bit flat, mainly because the Bandit and the Girl In My Soup are never particularly believable as a couple. Nonetheless, the middle of the film provides sufficient laughs to make it worth a rental. Just skip right to the train trip and turn it off when Burt and Goldie get back to L.A.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Friends
This movie is timeless.I thought it was hilarious when it was first released in the theaters, and found it the same all these years later.Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn at their best!I would say, if you enjoyed the movie Grumpy Old Men, you will find this as entertaining.I was so happy to find it on DVD and add it to my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated films.
Most people I know have not seen this movie. In my opinion, it is very underrated.I love it.What's funny is when they visit each other's parents.Jessica Tandy plays Goldie's mom, and she is wonderful.Goldie doesn't want to sleep with Burt in her old room at her childhood home:"This is my teenage room. It's not for sexual relations, it's for slumber parties." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorites
This movie is a must have for your home collection.
5-0 out of 5 stars Our Nation's Story
A Soldier's Story simply has everything working for it, and the result is a frequently overlooked masterpiece that will add depth to any collection of American film.It works as a murder mystery and it works as an astounding inside look into cultural psychology.Certainly the themes of racism - and self-hatred - are universal. But this snapshot of southern race relations in 1944, seen in a military context, is also very specific, and more powerful still because of this specificity.
5-0 out of 5 stars Aphenomenal Cast
This movie will be listed as an all time great.

Editorial Review

James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Non-Stop Fun
I had never seen this film before purchasing it, but took a chance that I would like it as much as everything else I have seen with Doris Day; I wasn't disappointed. Doris Day and James Garner were great together, it left me wishing that they had made more films together. I had expected it to be cute and fun but I didn't think I would be laughing so much! If your a fan of Doris Day or James Garner then you really can't lose with this movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cute Feel Good Comedy Movie!
The Thrill Of It All is one of my favorite movies and at a tie with Pillow Talk as my favorite #1 Doris day movie and I think this is a very charming cute movie and what I think as a great feel good movie to watch when you are sick or feeling a little down in the dumps! Doris Day and James Garner are great and the kids are really cute, especially Kym Kareth who is famous for playing little Gretel Von trapp in the movie The Sound Of Music.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Average Doris Day & James Garner Comedy
"The Thrill of it All" is o.k., but kind of meanders a bit due to a lack of focus in the script. I did enjoy the kids & the soap suds scene, however. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun and Heartwarming
Like the other reviewers, I must say this is one FUN old movie. It is a throw back to the early 60's -Between the Las Vegas setting and Disneyland settings...who could resist. And the cast has so many wonderful character actors. This is a definite win!Where is the DVD????

5-0 out of 5 stars 40 pounds of F U N !!!!!
This film reminds me of my first trip to Disneyland (1963) on my way to Viet-Nam. I'm a retired G.I. and this movie says so much about a time in the past. Tony, Suzanne, Phil, & Larry (Storch) should all have received Oscars for their performance in this hilarious romp thru this most appealing fun center (Disneyland). It's with a very sad feeling of regret that the Casino where this film was shot is now gone. (Stateline) My Wife and I visited the spot a couple of years ago. I have an old VHS copy of this funny, funny film and I watch it with much happiness, but I'm afraid it is getting worn out. They (producers) should make this film available on D V D !!!!! Nuf Said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Delightful
When I saw this movie had not been reviewed I just couldn't resist. This is a wonderful family flick for all ages and boasts a "who's who" list of very funny character actors from the 1960's.Tony Curtis is outrageously funny and charming as Steve McClusky, a Nevada casino manager who winds up caring for Penny, a 5 year old orphan with amusing results.Suzanne Pleshette as a romantic endeavor never looked better. And Phil Silvers' portrayal as the loveable tough guy Uncle Bernie can't be topped. The "chase" scene thru Disneyland is pure fun. This movie truly is a family classic! ...
